Anime and Manga Thread Vol. 1: Visions of a God
I see that Funimation's doing the quick sub stream thing, like Viz before it, for One Piece, but isn't that way ahead of fansubbers like K-F (I forget their full name)?
Yes, way way ahead. In The case of One Piece, Funimation has it online an hour after the episode airs in Japan.
So apparently ADV Films is shutting down, as reported here:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...huts-down-transfers-assets-to-other-companies

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/pre...lms-assets-anime-network-amusement-park-media

Granted, the writing was on the wall for the last year or two now, but it's still sad news. Definitely the end of an era, and a continued reminder of the ailing North American anime market.

Also, for the love of god, buy Princess Tutu *NOW*, before it disappears forever! Of all the shows in ADV's catalog, I can't imagine another company picking that one up. Sadness.
Update 4: According to Anime Corner Store owner Robert Brown, former ADV Films Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Mike Bailiff will now head up Sales and Marketing at SXION 23 (Section 23). Brown reports that SXION 23 has all of ADV's former licenses and most of its staff, but not ADV's former owner John Ledford. SXION 23 will continue to distribute the current orders and future pre-orders that ADV used to fulfill, without changing their schedules.

I guess Princess Tutu is being picked up after all :).

I'm still crossing my fingers in the hopes that things work out for this "new" company, but details are scant at the moment. Will they continue forward with new licenses, or are they only going to distribute what already exists? My voice actor friends who have been affected by this have not had favorable responses so far.

Also, the old six-disc Gankutsuou box set is on sale for $24.98 today at RightStuf.com, as the number five "Deal of the Day"! If you don't own it yet, and you pass it up at this price, you're absolutely nuts.

Whoa, I've missed quite a bit since I was without Internet for a few days (moved). Sucks to see ADV go down, but at least another company has picked up some of its stuff.

A quick update from my botched DVDs. A replacement for ROD TV finally came in, and it's in WAY better shape than the first one. So I'm happy with that. I also got a refund for Initial D since I put in a complaint through my credit card because the store I bought it from was taking way too long, and not even responding to my e-mails anymore.

I'm also a bit sad since I won't be able to watch much anime anymore. I got an internship in another state, and I'll have to share an apartment as well as a room. So I won't be able to bring much of anything with me. The worst part is that I'm going to be missing out on moribito, but I'll just buy it on DVD when I get back home in December. I'm going to try and binge on some anime over the next few days before I leave on Monday.

For someone like me who hasn't patronized an American anime company in over a decade, the ADV closing isn't sad news at all. Honestly all American anime companies can BURN and then there won't be any cease and desist letters anymore. HO-RAY!

Wow, i agree with KL twice in a row. That's gotta be a new record.

I was bored, so i just made a HUGE list of Plan to Watch anime on MAL, you can check it out if you're as bored as me.

I'm also thinking of joining the anime club here, and they tend to watch anime not yet (if at all) released in NA, so if anyone has any recommendations, shoot. There are some things that instantly come to mind (Valkyria Chronicles), but if it's very good, i'd rather wait for the dub release (Soul Eater comes to mind).

That's exactly why I don't want to join my college's anime club. All they ever watch are shows that are currently airing in Japan or shows that have aired very recently. If the creators aren't generating revenue from it, then I don't want any part of it.

I haven't watched Bleach in a while, but if I remember correctly, he just speaks like a stereotypical Japanese ruffian or gangster.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sentai Filmworks has acquired Tears to Tiara and Section23 is going to release it in November. I have been waiting for this to be licensed ever since I finished the Utawarerumono visual novel. The developer of Utawarerumono, Leaf, also created Tears to Tiara. Then it was adapted into an anime by the same people who adapted Utawarerumono into an anime. Woo hoo!!!!!!!!!!!

Source: awesome news, yes?

Aww. I had a feeling you were going to say that again.

Uh, in other news: I watched Batman: Gotham Knight earlier tonight. It is six animated shorts done in collaboration with four Japanese animation studios and some American writers, and what not. It was nice to see Batman in six different art styles; plus the content of the shorts themselves was pretty awesome.

My only problem with Batman: Gotham Knight is that it's six animated shorts. I would like to see one of these shorts or a totally new story done as a feature length film using the same creative minds that were a part of these shorts.

Oh, I watched the penultimate episode of Aoi Hana. The ending of the episode was fucking fantastic. It's a shame that there is only one more episode left.

Our lineup for the anime club is Eden of the East, Kuroshitsuji, and then the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Seasons 1 & 2. Overall, I'm happy with it.

There's a free episode of Gunslinger Girl available for download on PSN (not sure about XBL), though it's the first episode of the second season. I don't know if the show's any good or not, but free's not a bad price.

Yeah, you can actually watch the full 2nd season of Gunslinger Girl on the Funimation website free, streaming. http://www4.funimation.com/video/?page=show&b=222
They have only have the first 2 eps dubbed though.

I hear it's not as good as the first season. I'll still probably watch it sometime, or at least try it out.

Also, unrelated, but I feel like bragging because I'm a loser. =P I got all the Azumanga singles + artbox for $31 shipped on eBay. Pretty good deal. Link.

OMG, that means you're actually watching stuff subbed?! What is this world coming to? Just messing with ya man. XD
Haha, we're watching Cowboy Bebop, Nodame Cantabile, and Kuroshitsuji. I dunno if I'll actually go to any of the "showings" though, which are separate from the meetings.

Wow, the anime club at my college is different by comparison to you guys's. They do it up legit. There was even a Funimation guy there last year for something. Though there really isn't a lot of anime watching in the club as much as doing random crap. Which is why I tend to find out what's going to happen in advance before I commit to going.

i don't get why anyone would buy a dvd of anything ever. i don't own a single movie dvd, music cd, or anime dvd bought in the last 15 years.

Alright, I just got finished watching Resident Evil: Degeneration. It was decent. It was cool to see Leon and Claire in action; most of the time when there was action on screen the movie was interesting, but all of the other stuff basically fell flat—most of which had to deal with the animation and the story itself.

Now, about the animation: the environments and the special effects looked great—the movie looked its best during the first person scenes. The biggest problem with the animation in the movie by far are the characters. Their faces are so damn stiff; they needed to emote more when they were speaking. Oh, and the lip syncing—holy mother of god, the lip syncing—was driving me fucking insane. Fortunately, for me sanity's sake, my brain eventually got used to those god awful lips.

The movie makes sense with computer generated animation since it fits with the games, but they really needed to do a better job animating the characters and developing a more interesting story.

I absolutely agree with everything you just said, *but* think of it this way in regards to the story - it played out *exactly* like a Resident Evil game would, silly story and all! They could take that plot, plop it right into a game, and we would actually enjoy it. That's not to say that they should improve on their standard storytelling techniques when making a movie, of course, but for a Resident Evil plot, it was exactly what I expected.

Oh, and the lips were animated to synch with the original Japanese dialogue, but it's true that the rest of the animation was pretty poor by today's standards.

Hmm, I guess you are right; it just seemed like the games' stories held my interest more, but maybe that's because we are in control of one of the characters.

Really? It seemed like there was some semblance of the lips being animated for the English voices, but the timing was always atrocious and the lips didn't accurately represent how a human's lips move.

Yeah, I just watched the scene where Leon shows up in the tent with Angela and Greg, and I am confident that those lips are moving with respect to the English voices—the only problem is that it looks way too inhuman.

Speaking of the Japanese audio track, where the hell was it on the North American release? I found it incredibly odd that the North American release had English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Thai, but not a Japanese audio track.

lol @ being a douchebag for not giving american companies money.
i refuse to support them or their products.

if calling me that makes you feel better about not having the thousands of dollars back, more power to you.

i don't like to watch anything more than once ever. owning movies and such holds no interest to me.

See, and that's fine if that's your prerogative, and I can understand where you're coming from now. But some of us *like* re-watching and owning physical copies of things, so it's not exactly surprising that your initial arrogant remark spawned negative replies.

Unless you meant that you rent all your DVDs and buy all your music digitally, your post was basically "I love stealing." What did you expect?

originally i had a post here that explained my netflix, hd on demand, hbo/cinemax, etc...stuff but it's kinda weak so i deleted it.

anyway sufficed to say, i'm a digital guy. in this day and age "collections" just don't make sense to me. i still have a "manga collection" from back in the day that I couldn't get anyone to buy any of. it sure was a pain to move it from the midwest to the west coast.

See, and that's fine. It's here that you sounded like a pirating douchebag:

"lol @ being a douchebag for not giving american companies money.

Now that that's settled, onto more interesting things. You guys convinced me to watch Interstella 5555, and it was.....strange. I wouldn't consider it a movie, more like an hour-long music video spanning an album. I'm still not sure how to react to it.

I'm also getting into Pumpkin Scissors and Pani Poni Dash. The former is somewhat generic, and deals with the terrors of post-war life. It's not bad, but it could be better Pani Poni Dash, on the other hand, is one of the funniest shows, regular or animated, that i've ever seen, so anyone that didn't like it can fuck off :p. I like stupid humor, and PPD delivers it one after another. :applause:

As if making up for my lack of watching anime recently, i also started Time of Eve, but considering 3 episodes only amounts to 45 minutes, i'm still not sure how to react. I'll keep you updated, still trying to space it out as the finale airs next week.

I'm kind of sad Aoihana was only 11 eps long. At least they left it open in the event they want to continue it. Until then I guess I'll just read the manga.

Hey! I just finished Aoi Hana as well; I am glad I am not the only person here that watched it. Yeah, it is a damn shame that it is so short, but I surmise that it is because the manga is only three volumes long right now—also, more volumes are currently being produced. As far as I remember the anime covers the majority of all three volumes. I prefer this format much much much much better than the path that some other anime take that are based off a manga. Take Kare Kano: that turned into a clusterfuck near the end, completely souring some of my feelings.

Anyway, the finale: I loved it. It has the same slice of life drama that the rest of the show had, which I really enjoy. I loved the way they did the ending; and like you said: it leaves room for the possibility of a second season.

Spoilery stuff:
That was awesome that Miwa gave A-chan's brother that letter! That was pretty courageous of her to do that in front of everyone. It brought a smile to my face; very cute.

The ending was great because it tied everything back together: it ended with Fumi remembering her love for A-chan. The show started with a flashback of Fumi and A-chan. That ties their relationship together, but that wasn't all. The closing of the show started by Fumi seeing that preserved blue flower in that book, which reminded her of the school. Once she got back to the school and saw that spot where the blue flowers grew, she was reminded of the time when A-chan consoled her.

I love how the name of the show now has importance within the show itself; it's the spark for those memories that Fumi holds so dear. I thought it was sweet and touching. Beautiful.

For you non-spoiler readers: if I had one word to describe the show, then I would pick beautiful. It's quite beautiful.

Saw the Letter Bee anime being advertised on a train today, and a vomic of it on the Jump! show. Never heard of the series before now. I didn't know what it was about then but I liked the character design. After looking up some information about it, it seems like something to look forward to.

I was walking through the room when my sister was watching "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant," and I thought the narrator sounded familiar. Turns out it was Dave Wittenberg.
Ok, I'm late, but I just saw where ADV sold all its assets to five different companies. Are they gone for good?
As a brand, yes, ADV Films is gone. They live on in Section23 Films, which has taken over distribution.

I thought something looked weird when I saw the new Rightstuf sale had ADV titles, but no mention of ADV. ADV lasted longer than I thought it would after the mess from last year. I kind of had the feeling when the Anime Network started, that they bit off more than they could/should chew. Now companies are uploading shows to Hulu and Youtube for free.

I really miss Newtype though. I actually bought those at newsstand prices. I have a nice big stack of them. Even with print media dying, there is nothing like having a magazine in your hands. I don't even remember the last anime mag I saw in magazine racks in stores.

This.

In unrelated news, New York Comic Con and New York Anime Con are going to share the same date next year. To me, this is fucking great news, i'll have to find my way back there to see it. I've never been to an anime con, and went to my first comic con (NYCC) this year :).

I forgot to say that I really liked the ending to Aoihana. It was nice a sweet and I wouldn't have a problem if that turned out to be the end of the series(Although I do hope they decide to make a 2nd season).

I think I'm reading for the Digital Age... I'm running out of places to put figures/manga/games/DVDs. I need to start thinking of how I'd like to get rid of them.

Haha. You know, when your only response to my post was that you knew that the Aoi Hana manga was still being produced, I felt a little let down. My mentioning of the state of the manga's production was just an aside, so I was disappointed that you only reacted to that.

Glad to hear though that you actually did mean to respond with your feelings of the ending. Yeah, I wouldn't have a problem if they didn't make a second season; the ending to Aoi Hana was sweet and touching like you said. You know, Aoi Hana is one of the best anime at conveying emotion through the way the characters express themselves, such as subtle facial expressions.

I'm most of the way through Hajime No Ippo and I think I saw my favorite two eps last night. They were the history of Aoki and Kimura's introduction to boxing and such. It was awesome.

Went to my university's anime club last night (3rd meeting) and got Gurren Lagann spoiled for me. One of my most anticipated shows that I haven't seen. Yay. Still debating whether I'm going back or not...

Yeah i almost got it spoiled for me, it's all they talk about there like it's some godly anime. I haven't seen it, but it can't be that good.

They also managed to sum up Haruhi in one or two sentences, meaning i have no respect for them :).

I was interested in GL until product descriptions somewhere ruined it for me. Pretty sure Haruhi has been ruined for me, but I still have to watch it.

Gurren Lagaan was mindless fun. My only problem with the 2nd half is a certain character didn't get beaten to a pulp for being a major dick.... Also Yoko
