Anime and Manga Thread Vol. 1: Visions of a God

I rewatched a lot of GTO recently. Truly one of the most beautiful things ever as far as I'm concerned. Right up there with Azumanga in my all-time favs.
I have a hard time believing that Viz is going to give up on the DVD release of Monster, since they have already invested so much money into the series, but dammit, they need to hurry their asses up and release the rest of the series on DVD.
Monster wouldn't be the first show Viz bailed on, nor will it be the last. If it's not Naruto or Bleach, Viz really doesn't give a damn. What's really sad here is that Monster is SO fuckING GOOD, and doesn't deserve to be dropped like this.

Man, I have completely forgot about GTO. I remember watching it a few years back on a friends recommendation. I should rewatch it in all its glory.

Finally an opinion of yours I can agree with. GTO is awesome.

i think you and i have eye-to-eyed on several shows in the past. i don't think there's anyone on this entire forum i 100% can't agree on something with. i spent the last year just watching stuff people on cag recommend to me.

anyone know anything about Kino's Journey? that's probably my next show in the string of "short series" i've been trying out.

I know that it's fantastic.
kino's journey was kind of boring since nothing ever happened in 13 episodes. It's the same thing over and over again.
+1

Rewatched the first half of Kaleido Star, and finished watching the second half.

Watched the first half of it On Demand 5 years ago, and bought the boxsets recently because I never finished New Wings.

Definitely recommended if you wanna watch something light-hearted/inspirational anime.

Very true, I definitely agree and disagree with everyone a lot. I can't find someone who always seems to know a good show, and someone who always watches bad shows.

On a side note, and I know Razzuel will disagree, anyone interested in and/or loves Baccano! should watch Durarara!!, it's from the same author of the manga Baccano!, and director of the anime Baccano! (two different people if that made no sense). I'll say it's by far better than Baccano!, and I really enjoyed Baccano! a lot. Durarara!! is streaming on Crunchyroll right now, it doesn't finish airing (24 episodes) until mid-July, so it's a perfect time to start. 10/10 for me right now, and I don't say that about everything. In fact, Baccano! only got a 9/10 according to my MAL that I know all of you check regularly. So....you know....yeah...

Where are you watching all of Monster dubbed? I'm waiting for them to release on DVD, but they released 1 Box Set and then it looks like they just gave up. Looks like a great show.
Cartoon Palace has up to episode 60 up for DL on their site. Their rips are kinda bad, but I'm watching them at work on my PMP that has a 5" screen, so picture quality isn't a huge issue.

I also ripped "Cazador De La Bruja" and "Soul Eater" to my PMP, so along with Kurau & Strike Witches, I got enough anime to last me through the boredom at work.

No idea what Cartoon Palace is, but I can wait for a better quality picture. I have a lot of anime to watch (too much probably).

It's a site that hosts torrents. I'll let you connect the dots.
On a side note, and I know Razzuel will disagree, anyone interested in and/or loves Baccano! should watch Durarara!!...
You're right; I do disagree. The only things that I like about Durarara are Shizuo (though he betrayed me with the lameness of his most recent fight), both opening songs, and both ending songs. I don't care about anything else in the show.

I think The Tatami Galaxy is the best show airing in Japan right now. It's absolutely hilarious, the premise is refreshing and interesting, the characters and the plot are empathetic, and it looks absolutely amazing. Also, I love all of the symbolism in the show.

Oh, and I watched the first episode of Queen's Blade and Kanokon. Kanokon is fucking awful in every aspect of its production; the story and the setting are completely trite and insulting, the English dub is terrible despite some good talent, and I hate its idea of love and the fact that the show loves being nigh pornographic.

Queen's Blade was awful too, but I think I want to watch more of it. It's absolutely weird, and it's amazingly shocking. There's tons of bare breasts; there's an incestuous, lesbian sister; one of the characters shoots acidic milk out of her breasts; and one of the characters pisses herself twice during the first episode. What the hell?

Just that description made me laugh. Seems like one of those shows you have to at least try once.

you haven't finished it yet, so i'd hold off on that 10/10.
so many anime piss me off with bad endings that i tend to withhold recommendations until i've finished it, or at least am a whole arc into it.

i'll probably just juggle other shows until it ends and if you're still totally on about it, i'll 100% give it a shot.

i'm on a slight break from anime for the next week or so, but i'm sure i'll be watching kino's journey soon enough.

For some reason, the fact that punisher felt the need to be absoluely perfect with the spelling of the titles amuses me. There's just sooooo many exclaimation points!

I'll let you know, but there are a lot of anime's with bad endings that I still would recommend, and even if i get criticized for it, Berserk instantly comes to mind.

I love how the titles have exclamation marks, and even better Baccano has one, and then its spiritual sequel has two (coincidence?)

AND, Durarara's nickname? Drrr. Still haven't figured out why you'd want to nickname it that, you can barely even pronounce it.

Kino's Journey is very episodic. I really enjoyed it, personally. It had a similar feel to me as Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, and Jim Henson's Storyteller.

I finished watching Gunbuster and Gunbuster 2.

I thought Gunbuster was phenomenal; it's exactly the type of science fiction that I love. It has light-speed space travel, time dilation, warping, a threat against humanity, sacrifice, perseverance, love, and just a bunch of other stuff that makes it an amazing, serious, science fiction, space drama. I ended up watching it twice within the span of a couple weeks — though that was because I wanted to make sure the discs worked fine, which is another story unto itself — and the story was just as emotional and enjoyable as it was the first time I watched it. Gunbuster is definitely one of my favorite productions by Gainax.

Gunbuster 2 was no where near as good as its predecessor, but it was good nonetheless. Gunbuster 2 has a lot of callbacks to the original Gunbuster, which was amusing, but there was one or two callbacks that felt out of place or overused. The animation in Gunbuster 2 is fantastic, and it's outclasses Gunbuster's animation with ease, though part of that is because Gunbuster 2 has the luxury of being made 15 years after Gunbuster was made. If you have seen FLCL, then you'd be right at home with Gunbuster 2's animation; Gunbuster 2 was directed by the director of FLCL instead of being directed by Hideaki Anno, who directed the original Gunbuster. And that leads me right into why I think Gunbuster 2 isn't as good as the first OVA series; not only is the story completely different in tone and in execution (which wouldn't be a problem if that was the only difference), but the story is also quite confusing. There's a seemingly severe lack of character development with some of the main characters while one of the minor characters got an exorbitant amount of development in comparison — though her development did feel rushed. Also, Gunbuster 2 tries to mimic some of the plot devices that were in the original Gunbuster, but in Gunbuster 2 they come off as unoriginal, lackluster, and a plea for attention. The ending of Gunbuster 2 is fantastic on the other hand, albeit I don't understand how the story arrived at this ending; I really didn't get a complete grasp on what happened in the story; there wasn't enough time spent explaining what was happening, and some of it just seemed nonsensical and out of place. I need to watch it again to get a better understanding of it.

It may seem like I didn't like Gunbuster 2 with my mentioning of its problems, but I'll reiterate that I did enjoy it despite its flaws; it's just a tad disappointing that it didn't reach the same levels of enjoyment that I got from the original Gunbuster.

I highly recommend the original Gunbuster, and if you end up liking Gunbuster, then you'll also find Gunbuster 2 enjoyable.

Addendum: Hmm, I'd watch Gunbuster vs. Diebuster, since I bought that too, but I think I am Gunbuster-ed out right now; I need to wait some time before I basically re-watch both OVAs in a condensed movie form.

Who did the best fansub of that new Inuyasha? Ani-Kraze hasn't done an Inuyasha release in about 6 years.

No new movies/OVA's between that Mystic Island one and this new series, right? I never kept track... This is the first I've heard of it.
This, though if you *need* to archive it, go with the Taka releases.
They're better than Kanketsuhen and whoever else? I'm not real familiar with any of these groups anymore. I'm trying to avoid the quick and dirty people that just try and release first.

Yep. Taka hasn't finished yet, but they're up to 20 or so. You can find the rest, with competent subtitles, on Hulu in the meantime.
They're still collecting those fucking shards? Did the manga ever end?
The manga ended quite a while ago. This second anime series adapted the remaining manga chapters after the first series ended, but a lot of the episodes had extremely rushed pacing to fit everything in.

just something that I found sorta interesting...

saw a couple copies of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood at a FYE today.

Just a week early and totally overpriced.

It is pretty rushed, the way they used to do things it would've been dragged out for 3 seasons and a movie.

So I watched the first episode of Baccano! It was confusing, but I enjoyed it. I guess I need to watch more. Love the music.

The first episode is meant to be confusing ;).

Just watch and enjoy it, and then don't forget to watch Durarara!! after that.

/shameless plug

Soul Eater gets better, and worse. I think it's another of Bones' finest, and it knows when it wants to be serious and playful, but the times when it doesn't know which it wants to be are really pissing me off. There'll be a completely serious part of an episode, only to conclude with something completely ridiculous and annoying (spoiler for episode 15):

Death the Kid fights whoever the fuck that weird ass boy is only to let him get away for some fucking symmetry? That's not funny, it's fucking stupid.

Also decided to give Kurau a second chance, and two episodes in it's not bad at all. A cool mix of an action girl with some drama, look forward to watching more.

Last night I watched The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and while not as good and more confusing than 5 Centimeters per Second, it was still a very good anime movie (especially considering I hate most anime movies), and is very beautiful (to be expected of the same director). I also watched his this work, Voices of a Distant Star, and it seemed very similar to TPPiOED, but at 1/3 of the length, was much more disappointing. I wish it was its own film.

And yes, i realized I watched them in the reverse order they were meant to be watched. Oh well.

Well, I picked up Gankutsuou from the weekly specials since I've seen a lot of positive comments about the show. I went ahead and threw in pumpkin scissors and magikano to make it just above $50 and get free shipping. I realize those are two pretty mediocre shows (at least that is the impression I have of them), but they were cheap enough to get them.

Although it's only another addition to my sizable backlog. I seriously need to get started on it next week since I'll have a lot more time on my hands after finishing a massive application for grad school.

Gankutsuou, or Count of Monte Criston, was really awesome to me. Good stuff.

I'm up to episode 5 of Baccano! and I absolutely love it!
Where's the love for Gunbuster? Or at the very least, has anyone else seen Gunbuster?
I've always wanted to see it, but the company that released it in the US has such unreasonable prices that I never got around to it.

a friend with supremely different taste in anime and i agreed we'd watch one full episode of a series of the other's choosing without saying anything until the episode was over.

i made him watch an episode of cowboy bebop, he picked for me love hina.

jesus christ....
i didn't even know what to say to him afterwards.

Yeah, I didn't consider that; I bet that price tag killed it for a lot of people. Dammit.

Though I still think it was worth every dollar that I spent on it, but I guess not everyone is as crazy as I am, unfortunately. Well, if anyone has 46 dollars laying around doing nothing, then I highly recommend you buy Gunbuster.

I saw the original gunbuster around 2000 or so. I loved it, but yeah, I won't spend $60 on a damn dvd with about 120 minutes of video

the funny thing is love hina looks like it's going to be really great for like 5 minutes until he gets to the house. then it's like...oh...uhhh...it's one of these shows.

Even for "one of those shows" Love Hina is pretty bad.

A GREAT find for me in Greensboro, NC yesterday. Found a legit volume two of the Maison Ikkoku anime for $20. As it is out-of-print that made my day. Also got volume 11, 12, and 13 of Battle Royale manga for $3 each. Nice.

Got to watch Girl's High today. The show follows the shenanigans of a few girls that have just entered high school. This is one raunchy show, with sex being one of the main issues the characters deal with. Also, there is an insane amount of bra and panty shots, along with speedo shots...

It was an alright show, with the main draw being the two goofy teachers (Idol teacher and Macho teacher).

Up next is Giant Robo.

After listening to the most recent ANNcast, I was made aware that Animax has licensed K-On and dubbed it in English. The guest who brought it up was Mike Toole, and he said it had a charming, decent English dub, so I decided to check it out.

So far I have only watched the first episode of K-On in English, but I'm quite enjoying it. It's definitely a charming show; the girls' intentions and actions are earnest, which makes the slice-of-life structure interesting and fun. The English dub is decent, and I don't have any real complaints thus far; the only thing I wish I had was access to better quality audio — the audio in the videos that I found isn't the best. Also, I love the look and feel of the show; Kyoto Animation really knows how to make good looking shows. I really like the character designs and the meticulous attention to detail with the musical instruments.

I'm most likely going to keep watching it, since I enjoyed the first episode, though it would be nice if someone licensed it for a North American release.

So I finished Baccano! and I liked it. Was funny and had great animation. The music and charcters were superb. Now I think I am going to watch some stuff that netflix has on their instant queue like Gilgamesh, maybe catch up on Saiyuki and The Place Promised in Our Early Days.

Netflix doesn't have the best streaming selection. The only things I wanted to watch were Blood+ (which after 3 episodes is only decent) and Saiyuki (which I haven't seen at all yet).

They also have all three seasons of Avatar :)

Any word on if they'll make Kyokai no Rinne into an anime? I know its still a little new...

I'll have finished Inuyasha soon and nothing else seems that interesting right now. I started watching Ranma but its like an entire series of filler episodes, I want to like it and I like the characters but it never goes anywhere.

Ah Avatar, the only animated series to come out of the west that I would consider anime. One of my all-time favorite series. I hope the live action movie compliments it well.

-Edit-
I received "Avatar: The Last Airbender (Art of the Animated Series)" today and just skimming through the book it mentions some of the anime influences. Like the artwork for the demon form of that panda looking spirit (hei-bai) was inspired by Evangelion, and the recurring "my cabbages" guy was inspired by the recurring three old men from Cowboy Bebop. I also remember reading that the Avatar director ordered the entire staff to go out and buy FLCL and watch the entire series before production began.

For anyone interested, here's some comparison pics for hei-bai and Evangelion:
