Anime and Manga Thread Vol. 1: Visions of a God

To answer everyone's questions regarding the ending of School Days, the anime is based off of a visual novel game released for the PC and PS2. The game featured several endings that resulted in the death of one of the main characters, along with many more normal endings where nobody died. For the anime, thankfully, they opted for one of the violent endings. Let's face it, it's the only thing that could make such an awful show stand out.

I was going to mention that School Days was based off of a visual novel, but I figured that nobody would care, or nobody would understand what that meant.

If you didn't realize this earlier, then I guess I should say I also play visual novels.:D

More remastered stuff, this time from some japanese source or something. I couldn't care less about all of this if they keep on cropping it. Should this new super duper boxset but uncropped i'm sold

Don't know much about EotE, but another DBZ? WOW, WHAT A SHOCKER!
(I guess that's how they make money though, so they can do whatever they want if it keeps them in business ;).)

I'm pretty excited, but pissed at the same time. I just watched Eureka Seven a little more (for those keeping track at home, episodes 35-48), but i have to stop two episodes shy of the end to go out to dinner and pretend to be social for a little while ;).

I'll save my final impressions for the end, but for now, i'll finish with this:

:?:

It's apparently the same version that was released in Japan not too long ago. I don't think it's going to be cropped.

Hmmm? What's a visual novel?

Sounds like Higurashi.. after watching the first arc I stopped. Why are you alive? You died, I saw you :whistle2:s

I watched the new season of Haruhi to see what all the complaining was about. I understand they want the viewers to feel the same frustration as the characters and this is all setting up a major plot point for a certain character later on. I'm not sure if this is such a good idea when it comes to the eventual DVD sales though. I was expecting this arc to last 2-3 episodes but it's looking like half the season will be just the one day. I guess season 1 was popular enough that the studio felt they could get away with this. Or maybe the season will be 24 episodes.

Eureka Seven was truly amazing, so good in fact, i want to see every single Bones anime out there, so i made a blank checklist for people to use. Mine isn't hard to fill out, since all i've seen is FMA + Movie, and now E7.

RahXephon is very Eureka Seven like, in a way. I big mecha philosophical hubbabaloo.
Angelic Layer was originally a manga by CLAMP. Still good, but kinda different.

I'm glad Eureka Seven is finally getting the attention it deserves lately.

I watched Shuffle!... in 2 days, haha. Not that it was amazing or anything, but I was addicted... or something. Plenty of fanservice, and it definitely picks up in the later part of the series.

The Japanese versions are called Dragon Boxes, released around 2003, and they contain half the series across the two box sets. They also retail for around $500-$600! They were limited edition, pre-order only sets. They also released all the episodes across several single DVDs. It was a big deal, because prior to this release in Japan, there was no official Japanese release.

Apparently, the American release will have similar boxart compared to the Japanese versions. I can't wait to get them. Until then, I've got to sell my season sets.

Yeah, I'm a huge Dragon Ball fan. We all have our quirks.

The American Dragon Boxes are apparently MSRP of $80, seven in total, ~42 episodes a box.

Also, not that i'm trying to give everyone a news release, but the first box sets of Honey and Clover & Nanan have been set too. HONEY AND CLOVER Box Set Volume 1 (Epi 1-13) will be $60 9/22, Nana Epi 1-11.5? for $60, 9/8.

I've heard some amazing things about Honey and Clover, so i'm looking forward to that. Kinda sucks that it looks like it's getting a thinpak-only release, but i'll live.

This one is in my top five of all time (actually top two). For me, I have yet to see a show that matches this one for emotional intensity. I could gush about it for hours :whistle2:#

It's not perfect by any means, but its got it where it counts.

Oh fuck...

I had been meaning to get the rest of Maison Ikkoku (DVDs) from Rightstuf a while back and forgot. I just checked the site and all I see listed now is the manga.

Now I'll probably have to pay out the ass on eBay.

Now, lets just see how many more series Viz will license and announce boxsets for before we hear anything more about Monster...

Save us Dr. Tenma!

So.. I went to Texas last weekand I packed up some anime to watch during down time. Gantz, Blue Seed, and Devil Hunter Yohko. And I had that free episode of Honey and Clover from iTunes on my iPod. And I spent all my downtime watching.... Burn Notice.

I did reread the first issue of the Full Metal Panic manga since I've been trying to finally get rid of my manga backlog and FMPs 2 and 3 are next on my log. They've been sitting around for literally years now, so I had to read 1 to remember what's going on. The rest of my backlog is going to suck though. I have Chrono Crusade (the reason I got into manga in the first place.... I thought it was part of the Chrono Trigger series, hehe), Hellsing, Get Backers, and Samurai Deeper Kyo still left, but I was a handful of issues deep on each of them before they sgtarted sitting in my backlog.

Started watching R.O.D. TV today. So far, it's pretty awesome. The detail in the animation is impressive, although I hear the quality takes a dip after volume 2 (I've seen the first 4 episodes). The soundtrack isn't half bad either. Also, does anyone know if KickAssAnime uses the official DVD subtitles, or do they use their own translations?

I've still been watching Azumanga here and there too. Episode 16 was probably the best so far, haha.
The one where Chiyo-chan dresses up as a penguin for the cafe. My favorite part was Tomo making fun of Chiyo at the beginning though. Hadn't laughed that hard at an anime show before, I don't think.

I don't do it often, but i'll make KL's day:

I had just finished Eureka Seven as hopefully you guys know, and as i looked around, something caught my eye and i couldn't turn it down: Princess Tutu.

I finished the first disk, and i would love to give you guys my impressions of it, but i can honestly say i wouldn't know how even if i tried. I know that made KL smile, but it's seriously true. It's a storybook come to life, except there's some reality in there, but there's also weird magician people, some sorcerer later, and
THERE'S A TALKING CAT TEACHING THE CLASS
. WHAT THE fuck IS GOING ON?!

The story surprisingly makes sense, and strikes a fairly-shocking balance of chilidish and very mature. The openings and closing fit the show so well, and yet still question why i'm watching the show. There's a princess. In a tutu. Dancing. And it's f**king awesome.

I hear the Hellsing manga is amazing, wouldn't know myself, but i've been watching the Hellsing OVA's, and since they closely follow the manga, my guess is it's awesome ;).

^^From what I remember, yeah it was awesome. Though theer are some panels that are so dark and confusing that I don't know what's going on. But mostly they are just when Alucard does his thing.

Well that was fun, Otakon is over. Funimation marketing guy mentioned they were trying to move away from single volume releases and go for sets from the start, I fully support that move and hope it pans out. ADV didn't have a panel this year so I guess things aren't going so hot, friend tells me they had a booth in the dealers room selling stuff but it didn't have a logo on it.

Run into Crispin Freeman?

Yeah, I have already begun to notice that they are moving to thinpak sets for their initial releases. It sucks for a singles lover like me, but if this is what they need to do to make a profit, then that's what they need to do. It's a shame.

Good to know, maybe you should write a blog on it ;).

I don't remember this being announced, but it just so happened to be in my Amazon Gold Box, Death Note Relight Volume 2:
Did Viz have a panel? I haven't really heard anything from them.
NO, Manga and Viz were both no shows. It was a really noticeable what the hell moment looking at the schedule before going. Normally even if they have no panel they still throw something in the dealer room to sell but this time nothing. Heck Manga gave out a ton of free stuff last year. Media Blasters also had nothing panel wise but sold the usual pile of hentai in the dealers room.

No but then I couldn't make the first funimation panel, it was full by the 9 am start time and the fire code doesn't allow people to stand anymore so they just shut the door. As much as I love the art on single releases I got sick of them a few years ago when I started looking at the massive amount of wasted space it really causes , the new thinpack or sticking multiple discs in one case scheme works fine for me.

 I have nothing else to say, I spent most of the day taking pictures. Alas I didn't get around to taking a picture of the ice cream lady out at 3 am

I'm a little surprised Media Blasters is still around. What have they really done lately?

Of course, they did released Gao-Gai-Gar, the greatest mecha series ever.

Good question, going over the wikepdia page shows a lot of titles that are older then dirt. Guess hentai is keeping them from sinking for now. I'm more out of the loop then I thought though, wasn't aware CPM went out like that. Not shocking mind you since they never released anything anymore but still.
I'm a little surprised Media Blasters is still around. What have they really done lately?
They recently released Doujin Work. I picked up all three volumes from Best Buy on Friday. I was thinking about watching that after I finish Eureka Seven.

Oh, keep going, it gets *far* more awesome than that. The first disc is nothing compared to the rest of the show. Happy to hear you're enjoying it, though!

So I went to Big Lots today to see if I could put the Family & Friends coupon to good use. And I saw Eureka 7 vols 4, 5, and 8. And with all the banter about the show going on here, I thought about buying them. And then I didn't cuz Renton is annoying. I wasn't much a fan of it when it was airing. Hell, I even missed a good 10 or so episodes towards the beginning. Maybe that's the reason i didn't get burned out of it by the end but.... yeah.

Nice. I'll have to check out the Big Lots near me. Last time I went they only had a Fullmetal Alchemist vol that I already had, DBGT Lost Eps vol 1, DBZ movie 6, and the Cutie Honey live action movie, but this was a while back.

I fucking hate you!

Just kidding. Renton is not annoying at all if you watch the Japanese version though. He's one of my favorite anime characters actually. Just sayin'.

Speaking of which, do most people here watch their anime dubbed or subbed? I feel like I'm probably in the minority here, but I watch most of it subbed, unless there is an amazing dub (ie. Beck). I prefer to watch the show as the original director intended. Also:

  • I don't mind reading; I've seen so much subbed anime that it's completely second-nature to me now.
  • I also like the references to Japanese culture that you don't usually get in most dubs.
  • One bad voice actor can bring down an entire dub (IMO). Don't get me wrong, there are some annoying Japanese voices as well, but I find many more English dubs to be annoying.
  • A lot of dubs seem a bit "flat" to me. Even though I don't understand it, Japanese voice acting often feels more genuine and emotive to me. Some would say this is because I don't understand it, but I don't think that's the case at all (And even if that does have something to do with it, ignorance is bliss. xP).
I'm not saying one way is right or wrong, or whatever. I'm just stating what I prefer. When it all comes down to it, anime is anime. Whatever you like is fine. :)

^^^I'm sure most anime fans watch the subs anyway. Which is one of the reasons why I'm not at all like most anime fans. I need to watch my stuff in English (or I guess Italian and Spanish for those Excel Saga and Shin Chan videos I posted way back when...). In fact, the one reason why i haven't been on top of Valkyria Chronicles and the new Eva series is because they aren't dubbed. Though I'll probably end up watching VC soon anyway.

Really? Well, you're the third person I've met on CAG who only watches dubbed anime, haha. I'm curious to know what's really more common...

I do subbed. Mostly force of habit from fansub days, but I also can't stand most dubs so I just don't bother with any dubs.
Really? Well, you're the third person I've met on CAG who only watches dubbed anime, haha. I'm curious to know what's really more common...
Well, I think you'd need to take into account how long a person has been fan and/or how old that person is. The lower the number, the higher the chance the person would like dubs. And so on.

I always watch the English dub, unless the show/movie does not have an English dub. If there is no English dub, then I will watch it subbed.

That's a good point. Two of the guys I met that watch dubs just got into anime a few months ago, hehe. I started watching around 2004 (although I stopped for a while sometime in high school). I think fansubs may have also played a role in why I watch subs as well because I started out watching them along with whatever was on adult swim.

Also, does anyone else prefer fansub translations to the official DVD ones? It always annoys me when they leave off honorifics and stuff on the DVDs; not to mention the fonts are often butt-ugly on the DVD subs, haha. Translation notes to explain cultural references in fansubs are very helpful too.

I started out watching anime dubbed back around middle school (around 10 years ago), since my first anime purchases (Akira and Project A-Ko) were dubbed VHS tapes from Columbia House. Stopped watching anime around the beginning of college since I didn't have enough money for both games and anime.

I got back into anime a year and a half ago and now I watch anime subbed. I prefer watching shows/movies in their original languages over dubbing, also just sounds better to me. I think an anthropology class I took in college partially influenced my switch to subs.

I watch subbed but that was born more out of necessity then preference. Back when I first started watching anime dubs would wildly change the script a lot, Rurouni Kenshin movie is a great example. Or like in the Manga hayday just add a lot of profanity to sound cool.

  • I don't mind reading; I've seen so much subbed anime that it's completely second-nature to me now.

I don't mind it, but why read when there's a dub available? I'm lazy ;).

  • I also like the references to Japanese culture that you don't usually get in most dubs.

Guess i wouldn't know, although there seemed to be a lot of them in School Rumble, even in the dub.

  • One bad voice actor can bring down an entire dub (IMO). Don't get me wrong, there are some annoying Japanese voices as well, but I find many more English dubs to be annoying.

It depends on who the character is. If it's a major character, ie Renton, then yes it would be annoying, but after watching a couple of episodes, you get used to it. The kids' voices really bothered me, but thankfully they don't talk too much, although they do whine a lot....

  • A lot of dubs seem a bit "flat" to me. Even though I don't understand it, Japanese voice acting often feels more genuine and emotive to me. Some would say this is because I don't understand it, but I don't think that's the case at all (And even if that does have something to do with it, ignorance is bliss. xP).

The "flat" feeling is probably because most dub actors just aren't that great at what they do. They're reading a script and so i guess it's harder for them to get into it than someone like Jack Bauer who's just awesome :D.

I'd rather the dub since it feels more natural to me, and i don't like constantly reading all the time. It's also the only thing making me feel semi-normal xD.

I'll watch a sub if i have to, but so far i haven't. However, as Chronis said, Valkyria Chronicles may finally break me down and get me to read one. I really want to watch it.

Clannad i'll probably have to do the same, and it's fine with me, i just prefer the dub.

sometimes I find dubbed to be close to the original, outside of language pronounciation barriers.

Sometimes it's funny when normal english words are in the original since it feels so forced like Quincy in Japanese.

I don't mind all the reading, but it makes me pay attention a bit more, which is more work :p usually surfing and stuff with an englished dub.

I watch the dub whenever I can. Unless the voice acting is horrible, in which case I switch to subs. Personally, I don't feel like reading when watching a show. It was acceptable back in the old vhs days and the subs was the only thing available, but not anymore.
