Anime and Manga Thread Vol. 1: Visions of a God

Just finished Welcome to the NHK. It was pretty awesome. I definitely got some Genshiken-like vibes from it, but the plot, characters, etc. were totally different. Some parts of the show are pretty absurd, but I guess it works, haha. Being somewhat of an introvert myself helped me to enjoy it even more, I think. It's a great show though... definitely something different.

For those who have seen the show (SPOILERS!):
I have to admit that often I wanted to scream at Satou to freakin' DO SOMETHING instead of just sitting there watching idly though, haha. Other things, such as Satou and Misaki never really hooking up annoyed me as well. Of course, that type of thing seems to happen many anime series, I've noticed. Sometimes I wish there was more payoff for the viewer, heh. I guess not giving in to fan pressures keeps things fresh though, so I can appreciate that.

After seeing this, Genshiken, Beck, etc., I know that I'm definitely a fan of slice-of-life animes. Probably my favorite genre (if it is even considered a genre? I dunno).

I'm looking for something different right now, since Princess Tutu and Kanon are giving me a "cute overload". I'm thinking of trying Now and Then, Here and There, as i've heard some amazing things about it.

I also watched my first ever episode of a long-running series that i plan to watch until the end, and it's called Bleach. Have you heard of it? It's not too bad, but if it turns into Yu Yu Hakusho where there's one fight an episode and the rest of it is "YOU CAN DO IT, FIND HIS WEAK SPOT FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE", i may have to pass. We'll see.

Ugh, if you're going to watch a long-running series, you could do much, much better than Bleach. Every now and then it has a decent episode, but the characters are never really fleshed out and many are painfully obnoxious, the attempts at humor fall completely flat, and most of the music is horrendously bad. Oh, and the filler arcs are simply unwatchable. If you need to subject yourself to this kind of show, go with One Piece or Naruto instead.
 
Oh yeah, the filler in Naruto is much better. :roll: And wow, the music for Bleach is "horrendously bad?" Sure, it's different, but I think it's pretty cool. The latest, latino-inspired soundtrack is actually one of my favorites. (ie. "Get Smart!", "Escalon" and "Clavar La Espada")

Naruto and Bleach are on pretty much the same level in my book. If you're not feeling Bleach, Naruto is pretty awesome too. Just please, make and exception and watch the subbed version of that. Honestly, Naruto's voice is awful/annoying in the dub. And yeah, "Dattebayo" does not mean "Believe it," even if they only did that crap at the beginning.

Also, the_punisher, the fights are almost the point of the series--like what you look forward to. If you don't enjoy the fights (you'll find out soon enough whether you do or not), I don't know that you would find much enjoyment in the show. That goes for pretty much any shounen/fighting series like this.

Wow, i didn't see that one coming. I can never tell whether to trust you or not, since your opinions range from so very right (Princess Tutu) to so very wrong (Elfen Lied). Maybe i'll just watch a couple episodes of each and see how i like it. Judging from your tone, i'd be better off not watch it at all?

That doesn't sound too hopeful, i tend to like things for the plot and the action (especially plot). Idk, i'm starting to think i'd be better off not watching any of the "big three", but it's guna be a pain in college to try and pick-up a series once in awhile (according to most, i won't get much time).

Again, i guess we'll see.

Well, there's no real harm in watching a couple episodes to see if it interests you. Very few things aren't worth watching at all for the sake of sampling them, with the exception of maybe Elfen Lied. ;)

Yeah, I can't rec anything based off that. Just find something random and watch that. :/
 
Marathoned Innocent Venus today (although I should have probably been working on my game project...). It had some nice gun battles and some robot action. The main twist in the plot also kept things interesting. Not too bad of a series.

I've been getting back into anime lately. I go for months without watching any, and then I watch a lot in a short period. It's kind of how I was with MMA before I got into that sport wholeheartedly a few years ago.

I'm about to start Avatar Book 1 right now.
 
Best parts of Naruto are better than the best parts of Bleach. The only good part of Bleach is
when they first go to soul society -- meeting the captains, etc. and ichigo's BANKAI vs byakuya

Naruto has
the chuunin final exams, naruto vs sasuke, sasuke vs itachi, pain vs. jirayia, naruto vs pain.. a lot more epic built up fights

It is the best homage to anime to ever be made though. There is a care and attention to detail and story that only a few other american cartoons have ever had (Justice League Unlimited still being the best american cartoon that isn't Disney or a Fox Sunday comedy).

What?! But it's SO GOOD!! You fool! It's one of those rare, near-perfect shows that manages to find the exact proper balance of plot, character development, action, and comedy.

Normally, I can understand why somebody may not care for a certain show, and everyone's tastes are different, but this falls outside of those rules. Avatar is great. This is an objective fact. It didn't win a whole slew of awards and amass a huge fan following for nothing, after all. Honestly, I cannot think of a single reason why anybody would dislike Avatar. Like I said before, it nears perfection.

You are beyond help. For the life of me, I can't figure out why you liked Azumanga Daioh as it's actually a good show, but I suppose even you have rare moments of good taste. I think it's fair to say that you're not actually an anime fan, but rather, an anime collector. Is that a legal stream? The only place I knew of that streamed Avatar was Netflix, and that was only season 1.

Nope! But it gets the job done, unless you own the DVDs. And speaking of, I saw all of Book 1 and Book 2 available as individual discs at Big Lots the other week...
 
I just finished reading Doujin Work volume two. The anime follows the manga pretty closely, but even though I already know what happens I was still able to enjoy it just as much as the anime. The jokes from the anime are just as funny as they were in the anime as they are in the manga.

I definitely recommend it if you enjoyed the anime.

BTW, I watched Indian Summer.

I bought the DVD from the Best Buy sale in March. I never had heard of it and the only reason I picked it up was the fan service on the cover. I do not recommend the show. While it isn't as bad or as uncomfortable to watch as Eiken, it was tasteless in a bad way, not a funny Goldenboy way.

I think they might be $4 or $5, since they came in an assortment of other Nickelodeon shows with slightly higher prices. I'll check to see if they still have 'em next time I'm there, and get back to you. But in the meantime, you should totally watch it streamed!

Anime is beginning to feel a little stale. I'm starting to burn out on it, haha. Think I need to take a break from it for a little while...

Right after I finish Gunslinger Girl, that is. :p

I think that's pretty common, a great example is that i'm sure there might even be one person in the entire population of the earth that actually likes Utena....

Got my Fullmetal Alchemist Premium OVA dvd today. The "interactive" one really makes me wish I could check out the Fullmetal Alchemist ride over at Universal. Though honestly it seemed like it'd be kinda weak for one of those "shaky theater" rides.
 
Funny thing that Avatar got brought up. I just started watching book 1 just a few days ago and am up to about episode 13. I've seen episodes here and there on Nick but never watched the show consistently when it was originally on. I have to say that while the first few episodes of the show are a bit slow , it picks up quickly and has been very enjoyable so far.

Justice League Unlimited was really good but don't count out the original Batman TAS. Teen Titans IMO was also a decent american homage to anime.

I actually plan on picking up all of Avatar when I get some extra monies. I was very close to buying it all when amazon had it for sale a week or so ago, but I restrained myself. Must wait a bit longer...
 
I just finished watching Interstella 5555. Basically, it is a movie set on top of Daft Punk's album Discovery. There is no dialog in the movie; the only sound are the songs from Discovery and the occasional sound effect. I do not actively listen to Daft Punk; the only song of theirs that I know is Harder Better Faster Stronger.

I thought the movie was fucking awesome. The music fits perfectly with the story and the animation in the movie. Also, I thought the music was excellent. I think I might just buy Discovery off of Amazon.

Razzuel can see the good in pretty much anything. Nothing wrong with that, haha. He probably enjoys crap more because he focuses on what he likes rather than what he doesn't like. That's what I get from talking with him, anyway.

Unfortunately for me, I'm hopelessly pessimistic, so I always seem to pick out crap that annoys me. But whatever, that's just how I am. :p

I have seen Interstella 5555 as well and it is indeed awesome. It's kind of like a futuristic anime version of Fantasia in style. The music worked perfectly with the scenes in the film.

BTW, if anyone knows where I can buy a copy cheap, or has a copy for trade, hit me up. I've had it on my wants in my trade list for a while now. Rightstuf hasn't had it for ages and I don't want to use eBay unless it is an absolute last resort.

To be expected when you watch five or six series' straight in a row ;). I've been playing Godfather II, which is my desperate attempt at waiting for Red Faction to drop in price, but i don't think i can hold out much longer. I need a good fucking game to play.

Yeah, it wasn't that great overall, but worth the watch. If anything, it brought back memories of the best anime ever ;).
