I can't recommend the Berserk manga from the Day 8 sale enough.  It is by far my favorite comic and I've been reading comics for 30 + years.

I do wish Kentaro Miura was a bit more consistent with releasing chapters. It's always a damn event whenever they have the new chapter release date.

The whole DVD vs. Blu-Ray debate is mainly a matter of what kind of screen you are using for watching. If you are watching most of your anime on a smaller screen, DVD is going to satisfy. (generally speaking, 32 inches or less) If you're watching it on a larger high-definition screen (think 40 inches or larger) than DVD becomes more and more troublesome the larger you go.

The bigger the screen, the more obvious that pixelization and artifacting are going to be to the viewer. In a situation like that, high-definition Blu-Ray comes to the rescue.

It is true though that anime in particular looks pretty good on DVD, especially when compared to most other genres. The general style of anime lends itself very well to most modern video compression techniques. The large blocks of bright, bold colour work well with DVD video compression. You mainly need to be wary of DVDs with a lot of episodes on each disc. Anime DVD sets that cram as many episodes on each disc as possible suffer the most from degraded video quality. Anime series with only three or four half-hour episodes per disc will look a lot better on high-definition displays.

Still not feeling anything from the previous few days of Rightstuf. That Gatchaman set looks intriguing, but I don't have as much nostalgia for the series.

Gohastings has another 45% off used coupon (here it comes - GREENMONDAY) and I don't think this one will 'magically' end prematurely.

Also of note (since I didn't get it in time) - Bodacious Space Pirates Part 1 is no longer available for purchase.  I swear that went from 100 to 0 in one night.

If it helps anyone with regards to TV, there is a lot of truth to what Richard Kain said.  However, it also depends on how far away you are from the screen when you watch it compared to its size - human eyes from a certain distance cannot detect any visual improvement between 720p and 1080p.

There is a chart I used when buying TVs - http://s3.carltonbale.com/resolution_chart.html   - that might help too. 

 
It's not too easy to tell 720p from 1080p, especially anime, but it's extremely easy to tell 480i DVD from Blu-ray.

I watched Mononoke Hime for the first time in HD and in Japanese yesterday, after having not seen the movie in almost 10 years. The HD was worth the wait. The subs were extremely disappointing though.

Edit: It was also a lot longer than I remembered. For some reason, I thought it was closer to 1.5 hours, not 2.25 hours.

On the DVD/Bluray discussion, I only got a bluray player(PS3) recently. So most of my collection is DVD. But I did buy some blurays even before I had a way to play them. Now that I have a way to actually play them, I think I'll lean towards buying more blurays. But my computer doesn't have a bluray drive so there is still convenience for dvds there. I do like them DVD/Bluray sets that funi releases since it makes the decision that much easier. How long before you guys think bluray will get replaced by the next form of media? Maybe I should just skip the bluray gen and go straight to the 4k media.

Not for at least another 3-4 years at least and that's for live actions stuff. I was researching for my new TV and was looking up information on 4k. Hdmi 2.0 specs was not finalize until late 2013 and I think only ONE 4k TV from 2014 model year, Panny AX800 if I remember correctly, actually has ONE Hdmi port that supports both HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 so that it will be able to play 4k Blurays that's suppose to come out next year. So all those other 4k TV that you buy right now will not be able to play content from your 4k Bluray player when it comes out, except maybe the higher end Samsungs which has a connection box which you can buy for another few hundered dollars. Then there's also the issue of 4:4:4 chroma if you want to use it as a computer monitor. I can go on and on lol. In the end I just bought the LG 1080p Oled. Couldn't be happier with the picture quality.

Both of the DVD sets on sale for under $10 are also sub only, so if that makes a difference to you, you may want to get the newer release of the DVDs, or the blu-rays instead as they are dub/subs.

But they do keep you updated, unlike Funimation. I haven't gotten any notification about my two orders after the confirmations.

Yeah my Funimation order came in yesterday. Kind of pissed that my Tale of Fujiko Mine art-box came in damaged. Tears on the spine and creases on the cover. Don't feel like going through the hassle of exchanging it. I don't understand their use of packing paper either. There was only 1 tiny piece crumbled up, didn't provide any protection/cushion for my order. My Eden of the East had a slip, pleasantly surprised by that because of the age of the release.

yea i got all 3 EOTE and they all had slips, i had the same single piece of paper but i guess i ordered enough for everything to protect each other bc my slips were near mint.

I kind of regret not buying the EOTE movies as well during the sale. Didn't realize they'd come with slips too.

Yea it surprised me as well, but after ordering a few times from them i'm gonna conclude they will always have slips (for stuff that comes with one) even the old and/or oop items.

Not sure how much of a deal that Funimation sale, seeing as they never ship the items. They claim the packing label was created on December 3rd, but there's no record of it actually shipping.

Most people didn't like 2.0. I didn't mind it as much, though the new effects don't blend that well with the old animation. The remastered transfer is less than I expected. It looks like upscaled DVD to me, cause of the graininess.

That being said, I don't know about most of the titles so I can't decide what to get. I'm thinking Dante's Inferno and that Tenchi OVA to go with Battle of Gods, but I'd like to get a complete series set for $20 or less. If there's a one shot movie within the same price range, I'm open to that as well.

I received the second of my funimation cyber monday sale packages today. Both came in a relatively timely manner, though I didn't see much point in the little brown packing paper they included inside the boxes lol. 

 
I've not seen the new remake of GitS, but I far prefer the 2.0 version over anything that was available beforehand. Yeah, the overall tint is different, but it looks so much better that I'm more than happy to let that go.

 
Ah snaps, just got a shipment notification for my funi edition of Cowboy Bebop. Hopefully they pack better than their cyber Monday sales.

If you like 2.0 over the DVD, you probably will still like it more than the 25th anniversary. 2.0 still looks like a remaster, while the 25th looks like a transfer from a low quality source.

Don't get me wrong, I've watched GitS over 20 times, from the VHS to the DVD to 2.0 (once) to 25th (once).

I had basically come to this conclusion, too, so I'm likely not going to get the 25th version.
