So I watched Shadow Star Narutaru, and then after that I read the whole Shadow Star manga, since the anime ends about halfway through the manga's story. There's really no point in separating the anime from the manga either, since it's a really faithful adaption. The only major change is that there is a scene missing from the beginning of the anime; all of the other changes are minor.
I really enjoyed Shadow Star. It wasn't as horrifying or gruesome as I was expecting it to be. I think it gets its reputation because most of the characters are children and some really messed up, brutal things happen to them; some of it was pretty shocking, but overall it didn't feel like it was the pinnacle of horror that it's seemingly made out to be.
No, I think what Shadow Star should really be known for is just how utterly depressing it is. Nothing good ever happens to the characters; or if something good does happen, something awful will happen later to counteract that goodness. I was really hoping that Shiina would find some semblance of peace, but everything just falls apart in the end.
However, despite enjoying the experience that is Shadow Star, I have quite a handful of problems with the story. I read that the author, Mohiro Kitoh, had 80% of the story planned before he started writing it. I don't know if that's true or not, but it really doesn't feel like it was well thought-out or planned. The story loses its coherency quite often, deviating to short side stories every so often, or completely ignoring some characters or plot events. Then there are times where it feels like the story is being incredibly depressing for the sake of being incredibly depressing, and I think death starts to lose its meaning — if everyone dies then what's the point? Also, I was hoping that the story would answer the ton of questions I have, but it doesn't; some of my questions could be resolved from a re-read — like I don't even know who some of the characters are — but other questions that pertain to Shadow Star's fiction wouldn't be solved from a re-read — unless I wasn't able to comprehend the meaning of such things, like what exactly are dragons.
