Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

Just thought I'd bring this up, since its probably not been mentioned in a while. EVERYONE should watch Yakitate Japan, that show is hilarious

I just finished up Master of Martial Hearts. This is undoubtedly the worst anime I've ever seen. It was basically nothing more than throwing favorite otaku fetishes (school girls, shrine priestess, school teachers, cosplayers, etc.) into battle and have them punch each other's clothes off.

For anyone who reads scanlations you may want to check out the latest version of Canti:
http://www.bitcake.com/?x=entry:entry110408-144404
The main purpose of Canti is to prepare scans for reading on an ereader, but you can also just use its -organize feature to nicely organize your collection of scanlation archives/folders. You currently have to use the CLI version if you want to organize without image processing, I haven't updated the GUI yet to support this new feature.

-Edit-
Updated GUI and improved volume-chapter interpreting: http://www.bitcake.com/?x=entry:entry110414-132735
Pretty sure that's everything I wanted for now, as long as no other bugs to fix this should be the definitive version for a while.

I watched it because it was on Netflix, realized it was horrible the first episode but stuck with it because it was so short and I was curious it would get SO bad that it would circle back to good again (it didn't). Apparently clothes in that universe explode due to blunt force trauma, but not right away - nope. it's always delayed about 3 seconds.

Oh my god.. the final episode took this harsh right turn, and in context of the previous episodes flew in the face of what was observed from all the characters.

"Psych! everyone fucking hates you" was so absurdly out of place, especially since school-girl-fetish-girl was only in the damn contest in order to save shrine-maiden-fetish girl. Geebus, it was a truly, truly horrible series.

... what did you expect?
At least some decent fight scenes, which didn't happen.

Battle Chicken is right, the ending is totally WTF. I didn't think the series could get any worse until I saw the ending.

So I watched Shadow Star Narutaru, and then after that I read the whole Shadow Star manga, since the anime ends about halfway through the manga's story. There's really no point in separating the anime from the manga either, since it's a really faithful adaption. The only major change is that there is a scene missing from the beginning of the anime; all of the other changes are minor.

I really enjoyed Shadow Star. It wasn't as horrifying or gruesome as I was expecting it to be. I think it gets its reputation because most of the characters are children and some really messed up, brutal things happen to them; some of it was pretty shocking, but overall it didn't feel like it was the pinnacle of horror that it's seemingly made out to be.

No, I think what Shadow Star should really be known for is just how utterly depressing it is. Nothing good ever happens to the characters; or if something good does happen, something awful will happen later to counteract that goodness. I was really hoping that Shiina would find some semblance of peace, but everything just falls apart in the end.

However, despite enjoying the experience that is Shadow Star, I have quite a handful of problems with the story. I read that the author, Mohiro Kitoh, had 80% of the story planned before he started writing it. I don't know if that's true or not, but it really doesn't feel like it was well thought-out or planned. The story loses its coherency quite often, deviating to short side stories every so often, or completely ignoring some characters or plot events. Then there are times where it feels like the story is being incredibly depressing for the sake of being incredibly depressing, and I think death starts to lose its meaning — if everyone dies then what's the point? Also, I was hoping that the story would answer the ton of questions I have, but it doesn't; some of my questions could be resolved from a re-read — like I don't even know who some of the characters are — but other questions that pertain to Shadow Star's fiction wouldn't be solved from a re-read — unless I wasn't able to comprehend the meaning of such things, like what exactly are dragons.

Yeah I would expect it to at least have good fight scenes. Isn't there another series like this, Ikki Tousen? If you like the genre maybe you should check that out.

Finished the first season of D.Gray-Man. I'm liking it so far, seems to have high production value. Having Luci Christian voice both Lenalee and Allen Walker as a child is odd. Already have the second season so onwards I go.

Enjoying Umi no Misaki manga (from the creator of Ai Yori Aoshi). The setup is great for this genre, I didn't expect what came at the end of the first volume (which is the basis for the rest of the series).

D. Gray-man was a pretty fun watch for what it is.

I liked Narutaru at first but it just doesn't quite deliver on its awesome promise of excellence for several reasons Raz stated.
Tokyopop's North American publishing division is shutting down?!

What the hell?! God dammit! So I guess this means I'm gonna have a bunch of unfinished manga now? And does this mean I should start making panic orders for all the manga I've been meaning to buy? Ugh, this sucks.
They're closing in NA but UK is still up? So the same amount of work but no distributing in NA... maybe they'll move to a strictly digital market.

My girlfriend and I whittled our collecting to I think 4 series combined through giving up on some and several more ending. I think all of our current series are licensed to Viz or Yen Press, so I'm not too disappointed to see TokyoPop leave the manga business.

I think it is sad that my two lasting memories of the company will be the complete mishandling of Sailormoon when they were Mixx and the annoying-as-hell decision to put the Giant Red Angry Face on their spines halfway through alot of the manga I was collecting at the time.

I think the UK division just distributes whatever the NA division publishes, instead of publishing their own manga like the European division, which would mean that the UK won't be seeing anymore manga as well.

It's sad to see Tokyopop closed there NA branch, but they were one of the weaker manga publisher's and they really haven't brought over any new series in a while so its not a surprise to see this happen.

That's positively false. Tokyopop was the second best selling manga publisher last year. I'm not sure how many new series they released last year, but according to BookScan they had 2399 separate manga volumes available for sale, and the only other publisher that had a comparable amount of volumes for sale is Viz. All of the other publishers had less than 600 separate manga volumes for sale.

You can read an analysis of the 2010 BookScan report here: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=30752

When I meant weak I was talking about there translations and weaker line-up of titles which were shit when compared to other publishers such as Dark Horse or Del Rey,already knew that they were one of the biggest publishers, didn't make them that good though. Also from all the layoffs they did they were down to 6 people left on the publishing staff so it was only a matter of time.

Not that it means anything , especially since Ive only been really buying a lot of manga for like the last 6-8 months (more than Ive bought in the last few years probably) , but I think Tokyopop had the least amount of titles that Ive bought from and the least amount of titles that I was interested in buying.

Tokyopop may have had a large catalog, but it was mostly shit. In the early 2000s, they had a decent catalog of stuff like GTO and a lot of CLAMP manga, but all those licenses had expired years ago.

Looking through my collection I have a few volumes of Lupin the 3rd , GTO and Hyper Police which I got years ago that I'll never be able to finish without hunting down used copies. Not much else from them besides Fruits Basket , Fate/Stay Night , Trinity Blood (novel) and a bunch of .Hack stuff.

I know this is spiteful, but I'm glad Tokyopop's shutting down here. They violated GTO and Initial D, and it always bugged the hell out me that they plastered their logo all over every spine. GTO manga: Errors in every one of the first 8 volumes that should've been picked up in editing. GTO anime: off-putting translations in places, CEO's band's shitty song put on the sound track. Initial D anime: bastardization. Initial D manga: cut out the sugar daddy prostitution thing if I remember right. And to top it off they put out easily the worst racing game I've ever played in my entire life, and I'm being 100% literal when I say that.

Good riddance. Now what's going to be the best way to use this to our advantage, and get their stuff at closeout prices?

Caught up on Umi no Misaki (currently 81 chapters). A great series if you enjoyed Ai Yori Aoshi... actually I think this is better but to be fair I only saw the anime for Ai Yori Aoshi (which was good but usually manga > anime).

I was browsing through netflix and I decided to start Trinity Blood. Saw the first two episodes so far. It feels a lot like Hellsing but with less gore and more story tacked on . I am going to stick with it because it seems like a good watch.

I usually don't say things like this , but your probably gonna end up disappointed , I know others here will back me up on that. The show starts promising enough , but halfway through becomes way too bogged down in story and then it rushes at the end to wrap everything up and feels half baked. That being said , I've heard the original novels the show was based on were good and have recently picked some of them up to find out , haven't read any of them yet though.

Trinity Blood was a pretty boring show if you ask me.The characters were boring and the story never had a hook for me to keep watching it.Now the whole reason why it feels rushed is the author of the novels died before finishing it,so his friend had to finish them.

I watched K-On! episodes 1 - 4 on blu-ray yesterday and today. I really like the anime a lot, looking forward to more (have Vol. 2 preordered). I didn't think I'd like it originally, but I definitely did enjoy it.
I have started Eden of East. Starting to grow on me as I watch it more. Already have King of Eden movie arriving this week.
I really enjoyed this anime. its one of those anime where i sat through beginning to end. Also might order the movie but i think ill wait. might be a possible 1 and 2 movie pack

I just tried the first two episodes and I actually really disliked Eden of East :cold:.

Looks very pretty though.

Kind of dying for something to watch. Comedy/Romance is always good, or an epic action show but I feel I've watched everything good already.

Well, I finished watching the final two episodes of Madoka Magica, and it was okay, I guess? My feelings toward the final two episodes are similar to how I feel about episodes one through nine; it's actually a really great show, but I just don't have an emotional connection with any part of it, so it's as if I don't really care about the story or the characters. I guess episode 10 was the only exception, since it's such a spectacular revelation about the story, and it's executed so very well.

There's no way you've watched everything good already.

For example, have you seen Nodame Cantabile because I'd classify that as comedy/romance and it's fantastic?

I'm really behind the times. I walk into a popular anime/manga store in Tokyo (Animate) and I'm trying to find oldschool stuff like Ranma, Lupin, etc and I'm bombarded with a ton of stuff I've never seen. At least they had One Piece stuff.

A friend shared some of his anime with me recently, and let me loan Lovely Complex.

It's art style is interesting. My wife seems to like it and I see how it could grow on me.

hah new shonen series toriko. much love.

oh also, anyone read jump?
there was a one shot 2 years or so ago about a kid who could shape a special kind of metal into whatever he wanted. he went adventuring with some bimbo to steal a crystal from a dragon and some douche with armor made out of that metal jacked the crystal. then the roof collapsed and there was lava and shit.

anyone know what that was called?

This made me chuckle a bit. Animate definitely isn't the place to go for oldschool merch, as you just found out.

You are worthless. WORTHLESS.

Yeah, I should've known better. I've been there before but never really had the freedom to walk around since it's so narrow and often crowded.

decided to check in with shippuden after a while. watched a few decent eps...then filler started. was ready to skip filler but then i realized they had inserted a couple scenes of current arc stuff into the filler eps. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU
For example, have you seen Nodame Cantabile because I'd classify that as comedy/romance and it's fantastic?
Nodame Cantabile is so very good. It always makes me wish I was musically inclined.

I finished up Taisho Girls Baseball last night, and it's a very good show. Even if you don't enjoy the sport of baseball it's worth watching.

I'd like to get some opinions here. I'm definitely wanting to get into a new anime series and I've narrowed my decision down to two choices: Bleach and Death Note.

I've done a little research on the two and it seems like the general consensus is that Death Note is absolutely wonderful up until the end (or near the end), while Bleach is steady throughout and has good writing and solid characters.

I'm not really interested in the "forget those two, watch ____!" responses, but you can put them anyways - I just wanted some help deciding between the two. My history with anime is short but sweet: Pokémon (all the episodes; from 1998 to present), Outlaw Star (about halfway through, need to finish), and Cowboy Bebop (only a few episodes).

Whoever told you this is wrong and I'm a massive shonen $$$$$$.

Watch Death Note over Bleach.

Also your history with anime is pretty typical except I usually see Trigun mentioned as well so look at a synopsis or whatever and see if that'd be interesting to you.

First half of Death Note is great, I'd go with that.

Go watch Samurai Champloo instead though, it sounds like it'd be your new favorite show based on what you've already enjoyed.
