Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

Turn A has two movies that condenses the entire series. That's how I watched it. It does feel a bit rushed but I liked it.

Build Fighters is another good choice. It's strait up Tourney anime meets Gundam. Like Nukem said, it a lot of fun. And I'm pretty sure everything is officially up on Youtube.

And if you didn't see the recent Iron Blood Orphans that was pretty good too.

As for the main story if you really want just go in raw and watch from the first Gundam series which I they made into movies. But I think I remember the dub on those being really bad.
Yeah I caught IBO. That one is solid. Can't wait for S2. BTW - I think I get what you're saying about Flying Witch. Was watching Kiznaiver today and was thinking "After all this crap I just want to relax and watch Flying Witch" lol. It's like a soothing balm I tell ya, the OP is perfect for the show too. Has a bit of a country feel to it.

finished Bakuman series and Kyoukai no Kanata/ Beyond the Boundary. now i started Psycho Pass

Bakuman was funny not pure comedy, didnt like the repetitiveness on somethings, the romance was there even though the romance between two characters is what drives them but its not overwhelming.

kyoukai - good short series, the fight scenes were nice. nice comedy. only thing i didnt get was that MAL put SOL in description i didnt see the SOL part maybe i missed it idk.

Just watched the latest DB Super and all I can say is go Veg-igo/Ich-eta! :D Loving it. The preview had hints of Reborn with that pacifier...lol. Also, this is probably the first Academia episode that was really interesting. Yay!

Trunks with blue hair annoys me greatly. I know Toriyama probably wanted to keep the manga parallels (since manga Bulma has purple hair instead of blue), but it still looks off. Also brings a lot of annoyed people who think he's got Super Saiyan God powers.

Nice to see someone else in this thread enjoying Flying Witch. It's got a simple charm to it. If you like Flying Witch I would also suggest Non Non Biyori, Barakamon & Silver Spoon. All are set in the country and have that low-key, easy going feel.

Last few episodes of DB Super were lame. Gotenks finally shows up but does jack shit as usual. A big cock tease for another Goku vs Vegeta fight only to have Monoka doing his thing and just being worthless Monoaka. But the return of Future Trunks has me hyped.

My Hero Academia is finally getting into the rest of the cast. I like frog-girl. I don't know why, maybe her bluntness. Iida becoming class prez was a no brainer.

Tsuyu is best girl. She doesn't get much focus in future episodes in favor of Todoroki, but she is still by far the most popular of the female students.

Yeah I've watched Barakamon and Silver Spoon. Really liked Silver Spoon a lot, wish there was a third season. I think I'm one episode behind on DB Super since you're talking about shit that hasn't happened yet lol. That being said, I expected Gotenks to be a flop given how powered up Veggie is. I just like that the clone is voiced by Ichigo from Bleach haha. I expect the Goku vs Vegeta battle to be a fun one and will make Vegeta upset as usual.

Sorry for the spoilers in Super. I'm not a100% sure but I'm pretty sure this 3 epsiode arc was filler. Nothing really happens and the fights were boring. If anything some of Vegeta's reactions were funny.

It's an OK fight. Not terrible, but nothing we haven't seen before. Though there is a certain image that trumps anything else in the episode, but by the end it's obvious this arc was just killing time until Future Trunks came back.

Ok, I just watched Hundred and they ruin what's an average show with their ecchi antics. They did this before when  Sakura sang, but this time it's with the other girl. First camera shot? Crotch. Next shot? Tits. When she's singing, her mouth doesn't move. Next time camera pans over her? Starts from crotch and moves its way up. REALLY?! The last time I was this irritated was Vividred Operation where the camera is focused on this little girl's crotch right at the opening. Didn't even bother with that one because they set the tone quite clearly there. I hate this pandering to the lowest common denominator. It's crap. It's why I like Asterisk War much more than Hundred. All that kind of stuff is done faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more tastefully and better.

I only got 2 episodes into Hundred. It really is a tasteless grab to give middle school boys boners. Astrisk War is far from perfect but it's not as insulting. It does nothing new or original but that's not always bad. But seriously I'd love to see a show where main character is self-aware and takes advantage of his harem. I'm just a little tired of the perfect, innocent nature MC.

I noticed fairy tail collection 3 on the bluray shelf at the library, so I just watched that. It took me a little while to remember the characters. Now that I've watched brotherhood, I recognize the guy from Shin's voice on Natsu. The other voice actors do not stand out too much where it is distracting.

The second season of Asterisk War is better than the first. Mostly action, less awkward harem crap, and more plot depth. Also agree about MC being self-aware, but then we may end up with School Days :wall:

While writing that I was afraid you would mention School Days.

In anime if the MC is eager to do the nasty with any cute chick he never gets laid. But if ladies are throwing their bodies at him he's a clueless dipshit that's allergic to vagina. It's like sex is so taboo that it's always skirted around. I don't need to see the act, but at least have it implied or even discussed in an adult fashion without everyone getting red in the face. Then again most the shows I watch are geared towards middle schoolers, so there ya go.

I even find it amazing that Goku has spawned two children.

there is a short anime series you should watch called Rec

9 eps at 12 minutes a piece.

Alright, I'm finally caught up. I'm looking forward to that new arc...curious what the plot will be about. Also agree with Duke on the blue-haired trunks. WTF? They ran out of pink-3 to color his hair?

I took you up on that recommendation and watched 4 episodes last night. A little different from most rom/com anime. I will finish it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Almost caught up with Gintama. At episode #300 finally. It's going to suck once I finish it. This was my go-to anime for a long time.

It's not amazing but it at least does one thing very differently than other shows :p

Finish Ore Mono and it was charming as balls. Seriously, just a fun (mostly light) anime that I would love to see a second season for. Really enjoyed the characters and stories. 9/10.

Now what...

Ah the forums are finally back to life. I finally watched Kids on the Slope. So good. Can totally relate to a lot of what went on in that show because I dealt with similar issues (though not as dramatic lol). I didn't quite understand what they tried to do at the end there, but I guess that's one path you can take with the plot. Ending worked out I guess, but I dislike open-ended endings like that. I like closure.

Glad you liked it. Even though it's fairly new it's one of my favorite rom/coms. Here's a couple recommendations on similar anime

Working - It's pretty light. Great cast of characters. It's a working environment romance, but it takes a little while for the romance to build. One of the few rom/coms with closure too.

Nogizaka Haruka - Everyday joe gets the involved with super pretty, rich girl. The ending is a a little over-the-top but fun. It's cliched but that's not always bad. Sometimes you need those guilty pleasures.

Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun - Another light rom/com. Great characters. While it's a great show it's one of those you wish there was more of.

There was more content in the manga but they had to pack it all into 12 episodes. While it was rushed it still had one of my favorite endings to an anime. The princes come home

I'll just say that there's more drama and tension in this one episode than there has been in the entire series so far (and either movie, too).

I've tried but I just can't get into it! I don't know what it is, but I just lose interest :(

Always in the mood for a good Rom-Com (would love a season 3 of SNAFU).

i would add also

Kimi ni Todoke

Toradora

Yamada-kun and the 7 Witches

Akagami no Shirayuki-hime

Sankarea

I posted a long list of 20 or so you can go back to and ponder. Of the ones Rodimus mentioned, they all have flaws after the first season, so be prepared to be like, "hey, wtf happened to this series?". Nozaki only has the one season though, I thought it was entertaining but nothing special. Clearly he felt differently :) Worth a watch though if you want something very light. Oh and while not rom-com, I recommend Binbougamiga! Very, very funny and fun to watch.

So is there any romance-type series that are more middle-of-the-road and not one extreme or another? More of a romance-drama, but not necessarily something where someone dies and all of that kind of extreme tear-inducing story line? My issue is, I don't care for much of any cutesy or comedy at all, so in general I can't watch rom-coms - I'm just looking for more of a serious romance story without all the sillyness, or all the grief.  Emma was great, Nana was one I liked, Golden Time was OK but still a bit too much comedy in it for my tastes. Say I Love You was decent, but a lot of angst to wade through at the beginning.  A Lull in the Sea was really good, but a bit on the cutesy and soap-opera-ish Love-Polygon side.  I couldn't watch Kimi ni Todoka, way too much comedy and chibi in that. Toradora I liked the overall story, but had to grit my teeth through all the comedy in that one to even finish it. It's a challenge to find something that's not either full-on comedy or a tragic drama.

It sounds like you don't like the "com" part of "rom-com". Serious romance without grief is hard to come by in anime I find. Serious romance with no comedy is also hard to come by. Quality stuff I'm saying, you can find it, but it's usually not the best. Nodame Cantabile is probably one of the few serious ones that you might like.

@Girls with Guns - How about "5 Centimeters per Second" It's a short movie, but it seems to fit your tastes.  And probably my 100th time to recommend this in this thread but Kid's on the Slope may fit the bill for you too.

I couldn't stand Kimi ni Todoka near the end. The show was just dumb misunderstanding after misunderstanding. The boy MC had that "oh I'm so fucking cool" attitude, I wanted to DDT him into fat old ladies butthole. I just skipped to the last episode just to see what happens. It's a show that starts off fun but doesn't go anywhere. Kinda like My Little Monster. I hate those kinda rom/coms.

@starkillr - Working! was stagnant in season 2. It kept recycling old gags and started to get stale. But it redeemed itself in the final season. Also you mentioned you where enjoying Flying Witch. Have you seen Tanaka-kun is Listless? It's another easy going chill show this season. Seriously it's an anime about napping and I love naps,

Yeah, that is pretty much it, I don't like the com part. Some humor here and there is fine, and a small amount comedy I can stomach, but a full-on comedy series is just not my cup of tea. I do like the tear-jerker dramas, but you have to be in the proper mood to really appreciate those.

And yes, I really like Nodame Cantabile - there is some comedy in that, but it's not overly done - and I also love classical music anime, so that's another big plus for that one. La Corda d'Oro was a decent reverse harem, but didn't go anywhere with any romance, and Your Lie in April was awesome, but oh so sad.

One I am enjoying but haven't finished yet is Natsuyuki Rendezvous, just some very mild humor here and there in that, but not comedy - but of course I don't know how it ends yet...

Yes, I've seen all the Shinkai Movies, and enjoy them all. I really got to get started on Kids on the Slope, I bought that 6 months ago and haven't opened it yet.

I've seen and own My Little Monster, but yeah, doesn't really go anywhere.

Been meaning to watch Voices of a Distant Star. But defiantly get on watching Kids on the Slope. I promise you wont be disappointed.

Re:Zero ep 10-11 - This Arc finally ended. So now we can move on to some other sadist material and torture Subaru in some other way.

Gintama FIN - Finished all 316 episodes. What a fucking ride. The last 2 arcs were amazing. Please let there be more Gintama. It's sad that I'm caught up. This was my binge go-to anime for a while. Now I need to find a new one. Maybe Fairy Tail?

Re:Zero ep 10-11 - This Arc finally ended. So now we can move on to some other sadist material and torture Subaru in some other way.
RE: Zero is great, best show this season I think. The relationship the pink-haired maid has with that one guy is creepy as hell though. Really those two twins have a bizarre past. Still don't explain why they hate the Jealous Witch. Either way, lots of plot depth to look forward to in this show. It will be a good ride through the next 15 or so episodes.

Gundam is doing quite well though, I'm pretty excited to see how it all turns out. Lost Village and Kiznaiver are ending soon. A little more interesting now that we're at the end, but the ride has been blah. Hundred and Cerberus should also be ending soon. Twin Star Exorcists has made a turn for the worst in the last episode or two. Macross Delta had a "dramatic" episode that didn't impact me in the slightest. The two love interests were obvious a while back and this just feels like a lame attempt at integrating the idol group concept into a Macross show. So bummed. Some good songs though in the show, just not meaningful in the context of anything that's happening in the show, not like Macross F.

My Hero Academia is getting much better each episode though. This last one was great. Glad to see this get out of its slow start and kick into gear. High School Fleet and Black Relic are both still doing well. Solid shows this season. Kabaneri is also still doing well. Sad it's only 12 episodes as it feels like it could have another 12.

Have there been any sneak peaks at the summer season? Anything good?

I am sure it will. There's more than enough for another season. You might even be able to get another season out of the current arc if you give more attention to the training stuff.

Ok I went and took a look at what is coming down the pipe for Summer. A lot of sequels! New properties I didn't really look into since I'll just try and judge them as they come. We get:

  • Food Wars Season 2 on July 2/3!
  • Legend of Arslan Season 2 on July 3!
  • D.Gray-man Hallow coming back after many years on hiatus on July 4th
Bummed that D.Gray-man is only 13 episodes, but it's better than nothing!

Agreed, Re:Zero is very enjoyable. Maybe not my favorite this season but it's in the top 3. Count Creepy and Pink Maid got something weird going on. And I want to see more Subaru and Emillia screen time. Haven't had that for the last few episodes.

As for this summer there's a bunch I'm looking forward to:

Berserk - Been waiting for this for years. Really hyped for this

Shokugeki no Souma Season 2 - I like my food porn

Arslen Season 2 - Need to finish season 1 but something I want to watch

Hanada-Kun - Prequel to Barakamon so I'm down

Saiki Kusuo - The manga seemed popular enough to have him in J-Stars Victory vs. It looks intresting so I will check it out

I'm sure there's at least 2-3 sleeper hits I'm unaware of.

So D. Grey-Man is something I should watch. Could it replace my Gintama itch?

Orange (this one will catch a lot of people by surprise, but it should be easy to adapt given the manga is finished, and is one of the highest rated manga of the last 5 years.)

Rewrite (from Key who made shows like angel beats and clannad)

Mob Psycho 100 (from the creator of one punch man)

are some of the more likely ones to be sleeper hits.

91 days and battery have a decent shot as well.

I'm definitely watching Berserk. I'll take a look at Saiki Kusuo as well. D.Gray-man is pure shounen with some laughs here and there, but mostly butt kicking. I think with these new episodes it will be close to 150 total. So I don't think it would replace your Gintama itch :( The license was a complete cluster and Funi only did two seasons worth and like...a handful blu-ray. Arguing and shenanigans doomed this to never get a full, proper release for what I thought was a good show. I believe the manga was on hiatus for a long time, hence the sudden cut-off of the anime. That or the production committee were a bunch of ass-hats.

Yep, Berserk is happening. And it picks up after the Golden Age Arc. So whether you've seen the series or the movies (or both) we're getting new Beserk.

Hehe, there's a lot of "you go on ahead!!" and then the person never does. Feels a bit like drummed up drama. Anyways, I'm excited to see how this all develops.

I need something new. Now that I'm done with Gintama I need a anime to binge on. I'm thinking either Clannad or Fairy Tail. Any suggestions?

I tried getting back into Ace of Dimoand last night and got bored. That show always had pacing issues.
