Anime & Manga Thread Vol. 2: Za Warudo!!!

After watching those two episodes of RE: Zero, I do wonder why...

Subaru didn't just jump out of the window or kill himself at the end. I would've taken a reset after that fail.

Decent episode of DB Super. Lots of little things, like Trunks' Buu Saga and Whis & Beerus' reactions to the events going on, were great, even if the visuals sucked yet again.

My Hero Academia had a great season finale, even if it was mostly wrap-up. Given the Season 2 teaser, it looks like they will include not just the School Festival but the Hero Killer arc as well.
That episode of DBS felt like a tease. I do wonder if Beerus will step in and do something at some point.

im thinking.

his actions at the end were a new side effect of the curse and he very well might off himself early next episode upon realizing this.

I'm fairly confident those were the actions of a young kid that doesn't know wtf to do or say in the retarded situation he's in. He remembers everything that happened in past lives, but no one else does. Either way, I'm curious to see where they go with this.

I'm a little behind so I have to avoid spoilers. I did watch DB Super and really liked it. Funny how Trunks managed Buu all by himself while Goku and friends went through so much shit. There's a bunch of DB capsule machines here In Japan. I'm going try and get a Black for myself.

I have a lot to watch tonight. Re: Zero, Flying Witch, and Tanaka kun. Gonna head on over to 7 Eleven, pick up some snacks and booze and finally relax tonight. I've been so busy and when I get free time I'm so damn tired I just sleep. But tonight is anime in Japan drunk night.

As many people in other places have stated, that's because Trunks doesn't waste time with other shit. He goes in to get the kill, not to fight. He's not aching for a good fight like Vegeta and Goku are, he's not a reckless idiot like Gotenks, and he doesn't waste time like Gohan. There were dozens of opportunities for the mainline universe to kill Buu, but the characters' selfishness and pride prevented them from going through with it.

My own obvious theory on Black...

Given that he has the earring from the God's on his ear, he's clearly some combination of two people. Perhaps Goku from the spirit world and some evil bastard? Best theory I have.

Well, he referred to Trunks as a Saiyan, implying he is not a natural Saiyan. Probably some other lifeform (perhaps a Kai of some kind?) that took on Goku's form somehow.

The Summer Season is upon us.

Looking forward to more Shokugeki no Soma.

Actually, Subaru forgets to reset a few times in the LN.

Yes, I'm totally looking forward to more Food Wars!! Going to be awesome. So in the light novels, does he actually realize that he could've done it and admonishes himself or is it just swept under the rug?

Finished Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! last night. Enjoyed it. It was cute, though some moments were a bit cringe-worthy. Unfortunately the reviews for season 2 are not good at all. I'll probably pass on that for now.

Moving on, I'm thinking about starting Flying Witch, it looks great and I'm hearing great things. But I kind of want to stick with ENG dubbed anime for a little bit. I find I'm more engaged during my commutes when it's English. Does anyone know if anything on my "Plan to Watch" list is dubbed and worth watching?

Yes to both.
He decides to live with the consequences for some things since the distance of time between them were too long and he didn't want to go do it again and/or he actually forgot about it

I would watch GTO. The English dub is what I consider the usual sub-par garbage for English dubs, but the show is so good it doesn't matter.

Also I would throw Kiznaiver off your list. It's meh. If you want another English dub that's entertaining to watch, do Air Gear. Hell it's on Netflix.

I binged on RELife since Crunchyroll had them all in one go. Show was good, really enjoyed it. I hope there's another season. Tried Days, story is disjointed and whack, might be ok? Similarly Rewrite seemed broken plot-wise. I'll give them up to 3 episodes to draw me in. Food Wars was it's usual greatness. Made me lol a lot. Love the over the top stuff. Orange has some potential. Will see how the next few episodes play out.

I'm kinda bummed Berserk didn't start with the Lost Children arc, but I can kinda see why since that story maybe a bit much for Japanese television. But they seem to be steam rolling the fuck forward in wanting Guts to get with his new crew. Though now we don't get the small character beats that kinda bring Guts and Puck together. Regardless, from the previews it looks like at least the next episode seems to go on track with where the manga goes so I'm still interested.

I highly recommend any RE:Zero watchers to hold off on watching this episode until the next is ready. The title is surprisingly apt for this week's episode.

I've tried, but the dub just hurts to listen to. I think I'm just going to put that one on the backburner for now. I've loaded Flying Witch and ReLIFE on my phone, going to try them out tomorrow.

I usually wait a few weeks for shows like this that tend to flow into the next.

I still have some shows to catch up on but i did finish AssClass. Pretty much what i expected but still a great show. Sad to see it go. I tried watching the live action on the flight over but it was terrible. Anime into live action is never a good thing.

I finally did a little otaku shopping today but all i got was a Gintama keychain and some Pretty Cure stuff for mini me. But i did eat some damn good ramen.

Enjoy. I really wish there was more Flying Witch. Its such a chill show.

Yeah...the dub is trash :( Older anime usually have the people trying to pretend it's a saturday kid's cartoon as VA's instead of realizing it's more like an adult show that should have real voices (for the most part).

Yeah the ramen there is fantastic. Hard to find an equivalent in the States. Also love their sushi. Top quality and cheap (assuming you don't visit the expensive places) compared to here. Lots of other goodies too. I avoid the pickled vegetables though....completely different , unfamiliar and strong flavor.

To be fair, the concept of adults liking cartoons hadn't been a thing for about 40 years before that point. This was before Adult Swim, when The Simpsons was controversial for being too adult, and South Park was still brand new. Nobody was interested in advertising anything animated to older teens and adults.

Hell, voice actors in general were never taught to act "adult" in animated works, hence why stuff like Batman: The Animated Series and Gargoyles went after live-action veterans to play the roles instead of veteran voice-over artists. In addition, anime companies had less funding than Discotek has now, so most of their actors were whoever was cheapest and was readily available. It wasn't anywhere near as big an industry as it is today.

To be fair, the concept of cartoons hadn't been a huge thing in that same time frame. South Park was mid-90s, Simpsons 1989. Forty years before that is 1950, more than a decade before animated TV shows were even a thing.

TV shows, yes, but there were hundreds of theatrical animated shorts at the time, such as Merry Melodies, Tom & Jerry, and Looney Tunes. And unlike today, those were considered aimed at adults.

Go to the robot bar, I forget what it's called. It's hilarious.

Anything surprisingly good this season? I'm kinda holding off till next week to start up the summer season. But Food Porn and Berserk are at the top of my must watch list.

Nothing has stood out as "must watch" after the first episode, but I'm keeping my eye on:

- Taboo Tattoo

- Orange

I'm of course watching all the sequel seasons, so unless you're keen on the series in general, probably not worth calling out. Also, I highly recommend ReLIFE, which you can watch in its entirety already. I thought it was good and fun.

ReLife was freaking great. Great humor, memorable characters. I watched it in 2 sittings.  I hope it gets a season 2 someday. I wonder why they decided to release it all at once though?

Not sure what else I'm going to watch this season. Maybe Orange. I'll definitely catch up on Food Wars after it finishes. I'll probably watch Mob Psycho since One Punch Man was so awesome. Besides those I'll wait and see how some of the other shows turn out.

relife might get another season but I would recommend just picking up the manga. The stuff I checked out was fully in color and really aside from needing to read it felt a lot like the anime.

the anime ended up adapting like 100 of the 135 chapters lol. Thus even if they do do another season it likely won't be for 2 years or so to get up past 200 and some chapters.

Man I just watched the next episode of RE: Zero....the end kind of blew my mind along with other interesting plot developments. It's constantly peeling the onion back in ridiculous ways. I'm really not sure where the plot is going given what happened at the end lol. Getting complex! It's giving me a lot to speculate on though. I think I understand where things are going, so let's see if my guesses play out.

Lot's of "Re" shows this season. ReZero, ReLife, Rewrite. Is "Re" the new "Full"? Everything used to be Full but now it's Re. We're done being Full, now we want to Re everything.

Caught up with Re Zero. The writer must be a sadist or something. They sure love torturing lil' ol' Subaru. The end gave me chills. Really creepy shit going on now. It's really gone beyond the "trapped in a fantasy world" and become just how is this dude going to keep his sanity.

Caught up with my Food Porn, Berserk & Jojo. Now I guess I'll finish up ReLife.

I know right? Completely whack. It's never been tame before, but the insanity is just hitting new levels lol. 26 episode show, so a lot more to explore...

ReLife was good, but was there a reason why all 13 episodes were dropped on CR at once? Not that I'm complaining, I actually liked it and wish more shows would do this.

But yeah, it was good. Easy going slice of life rom/com. I like these "fish out of the water" stories.

So now what to watch? I'll probably check out sweetnes & light & Orange later tonight. This season is pretty good.

I'm sure someone who's more in-the-know like Zulu can answer the question RE: all 13 episodes. I haven't bothered to research, was just happy they were done like that a la Netflix. I forgot to watch Taboo Tattoo last night, but Orange episode 2 was fine. It's kind of got a bizarre twist to it and I guess the manga is a big hit since I saw a lot of chatter about Orange on CR. This season is very good though with all the sequels too!

if you felt like it relife covered chapters 1-108 or 109 of the manga, you could catch up on that with like 30 chapters as it will likely be a while if it ever gets another season. sweetness and orange are fine so far. of course with me saying sweetness is fine it's actually a pretty good recommend if you like that thing because typically I want to burn stuff like that with fire :p

I don't know the exact reason why but I did hear that the entire series was released on an APP in japan shortly before it was added to crunchy.

only thing that bothered me with orange is the audio mix was bad for me, the background music was way to loud.

I thought sweetness & lightning was charming as hell. Being a dad myself I'm a sucker for shows about father's and their daughters. It's good to have another easy going light show. It makes me think how useless a cook I would be without my wife. I will defiantly keep watching.

And Orange is going to be another tear-jerker like Your Lie in April. It was good but I can kinda see where it's headed already. I hope it throws in a few surprises.

Really enjoying Flying Witch so far. Just so damn cute and innocent (so far?). Just past half way and should be finishing it up by Friday.

Don't worry, it doesn't throw you any curve balls but it remains charming all the way through.

At this point I think I'm pretty much caught up with last season and the current season. Still waiting for more Mob Psycho 100, Hanada-Kun & Saiki Kusou to get another episode in.

So I just finished Yowamushi Pedal (Grand Road) and I swear it felt like watching the original DBZ Cell Saga. Every episode was unnecessarily drawn out, but the finish was awesome (just like DBZ!). I kind of want the version with a lot of the unnecessary repetition of backstory removed. The Kai version of it. Anyways, good show, but Haikyu is better. Speaking of which, I hope we get another season of that this year....

Things are going to get crazier since it's entering/starting a certain arc.

Woah woah woah....I read an article for RE: Zero on Crunchyroll that said that

The giant furry monster at the end of the last RE: Zero episode was Puck?!?! Did anyone else figure that out or did I just miss it because the scene was so WTF?
