I just got a Netflix account, and I was overwhelmed on their Foreign selections. They have a good amount. I'm trying to get into Asian Movies, the first movie on my Queue is Shaolin Soccer. I heard a lot of great things about that.

Can anyone recommend any other good movies? Possibly movies that have action? I also have Infernal Affairs, Storm Riders, Tokyo Raiders, and The Duel in my Queue.

Also, does anyone know of any good asian Zombie movies? Anything basically interesting I guess, because the US has not really been releasing extraordinary movies out there.

Thanks

A Better Tomorrow 1 and 2
Bullet in the Head
Hard Boiled
Fulltime Killer
Battle Royale 1 and 2

all I can think of.

My asian friends showed me lots of movies by Steven Chow, which has a lot of nice comedy.....coinceidenty he also did shaolin soccer :), so check out his other movies. Some are hit and miss, but some are very nice works of comedy

Some HK movies I like:

The Killer
Hard Boiled
Swordsman 1 & 2
A Chinese Ghost Story
Once Upon a Time in China
God of Gamblers
Iron Monkey
God of Cookery

I thought you meant porno.
same here
You mean to tell me there are asian movies that aren't porno?

Mmm.. Heroic Trio
Definately Iron Monkey and Battle Royale though.
Shaolin Soccor is funny so I'm sure you could enjoy that.

I'm lacking in watching some asian films I might as well rent some soon now.. x.x

You have some good movies in your queue already. I'd suggest A Man Called Hero (it's along the same lines as Storm Riders and The Duel).

As far as zombies movies go, definitely check out Versus. The director is quality, as is the movie.

For another zombie movie, Wild Zero. Although, don't get it unless you want a crazy, wacky Asian flick.

Additionally, I would recommend Violent Cop and/or Sonatine (or pretty much anything done by Kitano "Beat" Takeshi). Enjoy.

Films by kurosawa

Check out Wai Keung Lau

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0490487/...kcmV3IGxhdXxodG1sPTF8bm09b24_;fc=1;ft=20;fm=1

He is possibly my favorite director. He has a lot of romantic comedy/drama stuff I have not watched but all of his fantasy/action is unbelieveable.

Also Ryuhei Kitamura
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0457565/
More good Action/Zombie

A nother great movie is Natural City (kinda like bladerunner)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0378428...JhbCBDaXR5fGh0bWw9MXxubT1vbg__;fc=1;ft=3;fm=1

Also Shinya Tsukamoto
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0875354/
Japans answer to David Lynch.

Danny & Oxide Pang

Just some random good movies
Jisatsu circle (Suicide Club)
A Tale of Two Sisters

I really liked a Chinese Odyssey, another movie with Stephen Chow in it. And pretty much anything directed by Zhang Yimou tends to be great, though they are mostly dramas rather than action flicks.

Don't for get the sequels! 'Heroic Trio' has 'The Executioners' as its followup. Special weirdness factor: These movies directly copy the arc between the first two Mad Max movies, if Mel Gibson were three Asian uberbabes.

Just like 'The Road Warrior' in the beginning of 'The Executioners' is a quick expository sequence explaining that everything has gone to hell and we're now dealing with a post-apocalyptic setting rather than that of the first movie. This made for some great MST3K moments when I saw this at a midnight screening.

God of Gamblers is great but be sure when you look for the sequel it has Chow Yun Fat. There are no less than 5 movies which carry the title 'God of Gamblers 2' as titles aren't given much protection in the Chinese film market. One of them is an intentional satire and forgiveable but most of the others are wretched knockoff lacking any decent stars.

The true 'God of Gamblers 2' also has both my favorite ridiculous action gag and my favorite bad subtitle. Early in the movie, the title character is being visited at his palatial estate by his pal, God of Guns. (I'm not making this up.) No sooner have they sat down to talk about old time then the estate is swarmed by gamgster commandoes. During the ensuing battle in which our heroes each wipes out about a hundred guys a piece, one of them runs out of rounds in his automatic pistols. The other has a pair of full clips tucked in his belt. So the first one leaps through the air while ejecting the empty clips from his guns. GoGamblers throws the full clips like daggers to slide directly into place in GoGuns weapons. While still airborne he immediately begins firing, killing the villains who had them pinned down.

I swear, the whole theater sat there stunned and said, "Shaq-Fu me!"

After the battle and the discovery of the horrific murder of the Gambler's wife and unborn child, they're interrogating the leader of the gangster commandoes. GoGamblers is serious kicking the shit out of the guy and demanding information. At one one point he demands. "Are you still hungry?"

My friend and I were both perplexed by this until both turned and said, "Have you had enough?"

I recommend,
Hard Boiled
The Killer
Ong Bak (pretty decent action film coming to U.S. theaters soon)

For horror movies I just watch the original Ju-On which was fantastic.

If you like Samurai films, I recommend "Twilight Samurai". This is a fantastic Samurai movie. It not one of those crazy all out fighting movies either but a drama that the lead character is a samurai. It's a period piece that also focus' on the historical accuracy of the time period.

Actuall, much of the porn is quite worthwhile, if you stick to the softcore stuff with stories and humor to enjoy as well as the bodies on display.

'Sex and Zen' is quite good but as with any successful Chinese movie there are a zillion knock-offs of varying quality. But I'll check out anything with Elvis Tsui (among his several stage names) in the cast just because he's fun to watch.
http://imdb.com/name/nm0875275/

There is also the hilarious genre of sex assassin movies. This includes 'Naked Killer' as the best known in the West.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0109412/?fr...QgS2lsbGVyfGh0bWw9MXxubT1vbg__;fc=1;ft=8;fm=1

Despite the Level III rating (equivalent to a hard R in the US) they tend to be lacking in the nudity department but are fun nonetheless.

I loved Battle Royale. A definate must see. I have the directors cut DVD. I do wish they subtitled the extras disc though. I do want to get some more asian films, so this thread is giving me some nice titles to find.

Yea this thread gave me some titles to go see. But I do have a question has anyone seen ShinObi or Princess Blade? I think their the same director otherwise maybe I'd suggest those. Also isn't there like three Once Upon a Time in China?

Oh hells yeah:

Battle Royale
Battle Royale 2 (NOWHERE near as good, but still fun)
Uzumaki (MAJORLY fucked up)
Juon (WAAAAAY better than The Grudge)
Juon 2 (Creepy as fuck)
Brother (Great Gangster movie)
Shaolin Soccer (hilarious)
Returner (cool sci fi, starring the guy from Onimusha ;) )
Gamera 1-3
Any Godzilla movie

And if you're dabbling in Anime:
Akira
Perfect Blue
Millennium Actress
Tokyo Godfathers
End of Evangelion (I'd recommend watching the series first, or at least the other movie, Evangelion: Death and Rebirth, which is a bastardized summary of the 26 episode series)

I've seen Princess Blade and didn't think much of it. Even for an action movie its only so-so.

I own The Princess Blade and I thought it was pretty decent. The action was a little sparse but what was there was good IMO. The story's conclusion surprised me.

I am a huge fan of Jackie Chan and recommend these...

Half a Loaf of Kung-Fu
City Hunter
Gorgeous
Drunken Master
Miracles (aka Black Dragon)
Project A
Project A2
Police Story
Police Story 2
Supercop

Jackie Chan is always good for a laugh. Even some of his worse movies, like The Tuxedo and the Medallion, have some redeeming parts. Another Jackie Chan movie that I would throw up on your list is Twin Dragons.

I disagree with SneakyPenguin, i did not like Ichi the Killer, the story is very hard to follow, but it did have one super funny moment lol. my picks would be

Fist of Legend- Only Jet-Li movie i like
Zatorichi- Takeshi!!!!!
Riki-Oh- If you want to laugh for about 80 minutes straight
Crippled Masters- You will feel very guilty afterwards
Battle Royale
Battle Royale 2- I cant reccomend it, but if you see the first one see the 2nd
Magnificent Butcher

Agreed. I have over 30 of his films and Twin Dragons is pretty fun too.

there are some great suggestions in this list! I'm personally going to second both Returner and Versus both being particularly stylish.

The Godzilla movies are always fun to watch. Sadly some of the best ones aren't easy to get on DVD. Also highly recomended is the new Gamera trilogy (Guardian of the Universe, Attack of Legion, Revenge of Iris).

Battle Royale the movie was a big POS in comparison with Battle Royale the manga, and an even bigger POS in comparison with Battle Royale the novel. The novel was one of the best things I've read in recent years.

like another person mentioned:

wild zero.

i mean, look at how rock the dvd box art is:
WILDZERO_small.jpg

it's a rock and roll zombie movie starring guitar wolf. you get tight shorts, a few short clips of guitar wolf playing songs, exploding heads, and a bunch of surprises. this movie absolutely rules.

on a related note: guitar wolf is touring the states! they'll be in detroit at the magic stick on march 5th, if anyone is interested.

"rock and roll never dies!"
If you want something messed up, go with Takashi Miike films. Ichi the Killer is a superb movie, and the uncut version is on Netflix.
I agree. Ichi the Killer was a pretty good movie. It can be a little hard to follow at times (at least I thought so the first time I watched it). Also, check out another Miike film "Audition". It's pretty disturbing.

I third this. I saw this movie in my Cult Film class last year and I loved it. I know I've mentioned and/or recommended this movie on here at least once if not more.

umm i liked these maybe you might like also:
House of Flying Daggers
The Conman
So Close
Young and Dangerous 1-6
My Father a Hero
Fulltime Killers
Future Cops(Its a corny Street fighter spoof..ITs a must for any SF fan!)
Suicide Club(a little crazy)
Suicide Killers
Running out of Time 1,2
Gen X and Gen Y cops
The New Police Story is pretty good...Def on par with the original....

Hmm IMO I liked anything from Andy Lau and Ekin Cheng....Others include Aaron Kwok, Jacky Cheung, Nick Leung, or Shu Qi.......

Check em out...u might like some u might not...

One of my friends dropped about $1000 on asian dvds last summer all at once. Unfortunately I don't feel like trying to remember all those titles, but a few that stood out were "My Wife Is A Gangster" (1 & 2), Old Boy, and anything by Takashi Miike.

Here are my recommendations:

-- If you like samurai movies, rent Samurai Fiction, funny as hell! The old ninja had me rolling.
-- Any samurai movie by director Akira Kurasawa or starring Toshiro Mifune is worth a rental.
-- Taboo is a good samurai period piece, but it can be just too... queer.
-- Blind Swordman: Zatoichi (2003) with Beat Takeshi is a great sword-fighting movie. It also has great music and dance sequences.
-- Kikujiro is a great dramedy by Beat Takeshi.
-- Pyrokinesis is a good SF movie, about a woman who can start fires with her mind. She winds up becoming a vigilante.
-- Riki-oh: The Story of Ricky is over-the-top-stupid-funny.
-- Princess Blade is a good sword-fighting movie.
-- Cure is creepy, similar horror theme like Ju-on or Ringu.
-- Fudoh: The New Generation is a sick yakuza gangster flick.
-- Vampire Effect is a fun kung-fu modern vampire movie.
-- So Close is a hi-tech thriller, and the chicks are hot.
-- Returner is a so-so SF movie, kind of a poor-man's Terminator.
-- Tokyo Drifter is a classic yakuza gangster film.
-- Fallen Angels is about an assassin trying to get out of the business. Takeshi Kaneshiro's mute character steals the show though.
-- Adrenaline Drive is a hilarious bank caper type movie.
-- Hard Boiled is John Woo's great gun-fu opus.

Some things I didn't like:

-- Shaolin Soccer is just boring and I don't think it is funny.
-- Storm Riders is too long, the FX are poor, and the ending is weak.
-- Golgo 13: Assignment Kowloon is a mix of bad spy movies and soft-core porn. Rent it for a laugh, then forget that you ever saw it.
-- Hero Never Dies is just an absurd assassin flick.
-- Gonin is a sickening heist movie, with just nasty things in it.
-- The Killer is John Woo's stinky assassin crap pile.
-- Suicide Club did not seem to have a point. I just didn't get it.
-- Versus is funny at certain parts, but ultimately lacks cohesion and the ending is disappointing.

Well, just some of my thoughts.

I watched a lot of asian movies but dont remember the titles. The only titles I remember was the Young and Dangerous series which is pretty good. I have to agree with integralsmatic, any movie with Andy Lau, Ekin Cheng, Tony Leung, and Francis Ng is watchable to me. One comedy series I remember watching when I was young was the Aces Go Places series which is pretty funny. I heard Infernal Affairs is a good movie also. I'm checkin out the triology this weekend.
If you want something messed up, go with Takashi Miike films. Ichi the Killer is a superb movie, and the uncut version is on Netflix.
Ah, Miike. He's the only man I know who an make over 100 hundred films in a few years and have a majority of them be good. Ichi is a good one, albiet bizzare(and at one point, kinda lame. Extendo jaw. Sneaky, you know what I'm talkin' bout) but make sure to pick up Dead or Alive by him as well. Total classic, and one of the...most interesting endings to any action movie. Audition is a great movie as is versus. Get them.
As far as zombies movies go, definitely check out Versus. The director is quality, as is the movie
Versus was such crap, it doesn't have anything good in it. I rented it from Blockbuster and I thought it may be decent, but it was god awful. But since your on netflix rent it any way. You'll see how crappy it is. Don't belive the hype about that movie.
