General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

In all fairness, Obsidian also has some of the best writing and plot development in the gaming industry .. but yes, buggy as hell. Speaking of Obsidian, I wish we would get a port of Fallout 1, 2 and/or Tactics. I believe Interplay still holds the classic licenses, but Bethesda or Interplay should really give someone the go ahead to create a port for iOS. Heck, just let Obsidian make a new Fallout for iPad using the classic isometric view and I'd be ecstatic.

I'm so bored of the whole physics where's my water / angry birds type games. Can anyone recommend any games you're addicted to right now? I've got iTunes credit to burn.

Puzzle and Dragons, Badland, and Hero Academy are the only iOS games that are seeing much play from me lately.

King Cashing 2 has eat up a lot of my free time. A mix of slot and RPG elements, very addicting. A great deal at $2.99 although it was a on sale a while back for $1.99. Also, the new Kingdom Rush: Frontiers is coming out June 6, which is a follow-up to one of the best tower defense games available on iOS.

Kinda unfair assessment, in my opinion. Bioware created the engine and had a long time to make the first KOTOR - which is an all-time classic. Then Obsidian had to come in and take an unfamiliar engine, have a much smaller budget and schedule, and craft a worthy sequel. That's unenviable for even the best developers; I think they did a pretty good job.

New kingdom rush out June 6th!? I'm buying that day one.

Thanks for the other suggestions folks. I'll check them out till KR is released.

I'm glad to see KOTOR doing so well (top paid). Here's to more console level games, though I'd like to see some new IPs. I imagine those will only work if there's a big developer behind them (like Bioware). Otherwise everybody waits for 99c, unfortunately, and so they don't get made. I haven't bought KOTOR (yet?) as I'm not sure it's my cup of tea. I usually get bored by RPGs. I did clear out space for it, though. Mulling it over.

I can't wait for XCOM!

King Cashing 2 didn't give me as much playtime as the first one, it's good but if you're already going to spend $3 I'd say buy Warhammer Quest instead for $5, I've spend 12+ hours on it and loving it. Going to buy the expansion soon and I read there's an additional expansion on the way. A slots-style game I like better than King Cashing is Dungeon Plunder.

I've put in about 15-20 hrs into Warhammer so far. My most recent was 7 hours in to have my party completely faceplant. (8 failed heal rolls + 3 spawns of 10+ = too much for my worthy heros)

I like the Skaven area.. it mixes things up. As far as the 3 persons... my slayer is constantly missing his swings, the WP is awesome, and the arch mage is only barely usable with his offense/defense. But those are personal opinions.

I don't really feel the need or temptation to buy the additional characters, I would probably give it some thought if they were cheaper. At this point I won't hesitate to buy that expansion though, you get a lot for your $5 in terms of content and quality.

They still need to iron out some bugs tho cause it crashes now and then, but saves so frequently that I haven't lost any progress.

I don't keep up with iOS game news, but I was totally surprised when I went to the App Store and noticed KOTOR! Bought it in a heartbeat considering I only played KOTOR 2 and never the original one. I've heard from many that the original was the best one, so here's to it!

If only SEGA would port PSO for iOS, wouldn't even care if they turned it into SP only. Yeah I know, keep dreaming.. but damn

Yes you get case 1 of the original game for free, then it's an IAP for the full games either seperately or a bundle for $17.

Considering its that much to buy 1 of the games on DS that's a steal IMO.

Here's the problem I'm having...when I can get KOTOR on the iPad for $10, it's hard to justify $18 for Phoenix Wright even though I had fun with the first few chapters.

Paying $10 for an old xbox game vs. $7 more for three DS games that were $30 each are probably out of print and hard to find ...

jk ... I probably won't buy Phoenix Wright until there's a deep price drop ... KOTOR on the other hand is tempting me more each day.

IGN's free game of the month is Minigore 2: Zombies. Supposedly a pretty good game, but I don't know much about it:

http://www.ign.com/prime/promo/minigore2-free
Did you click on the Get my code link? Clicking on it yields a "Sorry, this promotion has ended"message.
Ah, my bad. I got it like 48 hours ago, but couldn't post here due to the server stuff. Didn't realize it had expired now.

Edit: Oh, it looks like it was last month's free game. Expired two days ago. Thought it was for this month. Perhaps they'll have another one this month.

Apparently the latest update did a world of good.
New reviews look pretty promising . I'm gonna download.
So many wonderful memories of that game.

FFT has been updated and is apparently 50% off according to TouchArcade.

FFT for iPhone

FFT for iPad

Is there any difference between the iPhone and iPad version with the new update? Initially I remember reading that there was no difference besides the game taking up full screen when the iPad version first released. I already have the iPhone version, but if the iPad version looks a lot better I may upgrade at 50% off.

This is the way I felt, but I just went ahead and bought the iPad version...glad I did. It looks MUCH better, IMO.

Feel free to PM me to request the following free codes: Book: The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving by Johnathan Evison (Qty8) or Despair by the Yeah Yeah Yeah's (Qty3).

Here are a couple 4.5 star games that have gone free:

Rocket Riot by Chillingo is a super addicting side-view shooter. Had this watchlisted just because I loved its Metal Slug feel, but it is so much more fun. The movement is a lot more dynamic, and I love the aiming system. (4.5 stars, 2 days on sale at current price)

Jump and Fly by Diesel Puppet is a vertical jump game with adorable paper graphics. Simple gameplay exactly like Doodle Jump but with a ninja. (4.5 stars. 7 days on sale)

Angry Zombies !! by Si-Yeon Kim is one of my personal favorites. You get to take over the world by infecting humanity with 5 different types of zombies (Teleporter available in this new version). Nom nomming brains everywhere on your way to undead domination. (4.5 stars, 12 days on sale)

Really dug Rocket Riot on XBLA; intrigued how it controls on iOS.
KOTOR is dope; played it on a long flight yesterday. Funny his much it's like Mass Effect.

Are we only allowed to link to price history on appshopper and no where else? I'm biased so I would like to ask your opinions. Take Asaphalt 7 sale as example. AppSnatcher shows "Current price is the lowest price. Total 10+ days at current price, no current IAP sales."

It seems better than having to read lists of price/date changes,
You don't have to read the price history, but of course it's very helpful if you want to know whether it's worth buying something.

Appshopper is well laid out and helpful. Appsnatcher seems unusable to me.

@ryanflucas: I do not know if it is a byproduct of the forum changes currently been made or something else but it seems the OP is no longer a wiki unless if course I am blind and am missing something that's right in front of me.

iTunes purchases work like any other online service right? Once I download it (even if it was free that day) it becomes part of my library and I can redownload it if I need to, right?

Sorry, I'm brand new to actually having to buy this stuff, getting an ipad on Tuesday.

So I've been re-playing FFT: WotL on the iPad, and while they improved the graphics a great deal, why couldn't they fix some of the stupid menu issues? Having to confirm every darn thing you touch, and why can't they include the option for a virtual d-pad? That would be easier than having to touch the menu item and hit OK every darn time. Frustrating. Just a lazy port, and it took them what, a year, to fix the graphics? I guess it will be another couple of years to get the menus fixed. Square Enix has to be one of the laziest companies around, and they just keep milking their customers for all their worth. Grrr.
