Apple WWDC 2008 - 3G iPhones - 8GB = $199 16GB = $299 (AKA iPhone Thread)
Nah, just the 10 digit phone number.
AIM has done this for years but I'm now learning that most people didn't know about it.

I have a separate friends group that's just cell numbers.
Oh nice, that's cool. Too bad we still have to pay for incoming messages (assuming our recipients don't use the AIM app.)

If they message you back, it sends it to the AIM box. So you wouldn't have to pay.

Unless they changed how people can respond, I haven't used it in a while.

Oh whoops, forgot the important part.

Add "+1" and then the number.

So like: +12145551234

That tells it's it's not a screenname.
It should, but instead of +1, use, +countrycode.
Crap. Just tried sending one to my wife (she's in Indonesia at the moment) and it didn't work. Oh well.

yea ive used the aim texting for years now.. been useful in the past..

my search for the phone continues.. unfortunately douchebags around here still ask for 300+ for 1st gen iphone..

any word if att stores are stocking up on more phones or are the 3g phones pretty much all sold out right now?

and lastly what are the best accssories for the 3g? any recommendations for case or silicon skin? which is preferred?

AT&T stores are supposed to be getting near daily shipments for at least the next week or so. However, they don't seem to get that many at a time. Your best bet might be an Apple store - they get way more stock.

Awesome...I hope that they have phones this weekend, hopefully I'll get mine then.

Question to those who already got one, do you have to pay for the phone upfront, or can they bill the phone to your phone bill?

Upfront

Only payment deferred is the activation/upgrade fee

Edit:

Battery impression: Good. I spent the better part of the weekend using the thing, switching from 3G to wifi, playing with apps, listening to music, kinda heavy web browsing to test Safari, and it lasted the whole day
When you miss a call, does it tell you who called, or does it just say "Call Failure" on the splash?
Depends on whether the sender has caller ID blocked on their number. So far, I've been able to see the number of every person who has called me.

The competitor is Best Skins Ever. I've used BSE many times and I love it. I just ordered 2 skins for me and my sister's iphones. Not sure we'll use the screen piece, since the glass is fairly scratch proof and I like the smoothness of it, but it's definitely going on the back.

It's 25% off until tomorrow, making it $5.99 plus shipping. Great deal, the BSE doesn't come with the little squeegee and bottle of solution. I just use a credit card and mix my own.

Either one works well.

for texting uses aim on the iphone, is there a way to change the user id of the person you are texting to there name, rather then the number...I have tried a variety of things but it hasn't worked for me yet

Try with AIM on your computer.

I had a group with cells, but it has their names.
I think it's $600 without a contract.
umm..i was told it was 600 w/ a 2 year contract if your new to ATT.

Someone lied to you then. It's $199 with a 2 year contract.
Supposedly, the first 2.0 unlock/activate tools are coming out tomorrow around noon (EST). I hope so.
Sweet, where'd you read that?
Dev blog?

question.. you guys said you saw people turning in their old iphones toward the new ones? how did that work price wise?

i am curious because im currently out of my contact terms and assuming i get the 3g, i will be locked in for 2 more years.. ofcourse next year the 3rd gen will come out so im wondering what my options will be then..

The people who were turning old Iphones were people who had purchased New EDGE Iphone on or after May 27th of this year. Their upgrade to a 3G Iphone 3G was free of charge

People who bought an Iphone BEFORE May 27th were offered no trade-in incentive. They paid either $399[8 GB] or $499[16 GB].

BUT they were allowed to keep the old Iphone and do whatever they chose to do with it.

i see.. thanks

I am guessing that those prices do not include a contract extension?

i guess it comes out to the same since the old phone will easily fetch around 200.
Getting a new Iphone automatically nets you a new 2 year agreement w/ AT&T regardless of when/if you had an Iphone prior
right but lets say I buy 3g now and next year i want to upgrade.. will they add 2 more years on to my remaining year?

I believe the correct answer is, no, your contract will only be extended to two years. Eligibility for such an extension however will vary based on AT&T's criteria.
Sweet, where'd you read that?

It isn't out yet, though. :(

thanks worked out for me

as for coming to cag...anyone else having issues with the typing and how long it takes on this site? Is there something I can do, or is it related to cag itself. Every time I type a letter, it take awhile to pop up on my screen as well as I get a bunch of differnet fonts popping up over the letter I typed.

You can still send and receive picture messages (or other MMS) through e-mail. I'm not sure why they don't offer native MMS though.
was reading a review.. does this thing actually lack mms? you must be kidding me
that's what is so curious to me as well. I love the phone, but for all the technology that it has (have you seen Super Monkey Ball?), the fact that it can't do MMS is really bizarre.

At least Apple isn't pulling a Sony and saying that the feature is sooo last gen.

alright, the more I use my new iphone the more ?'s I have...

any help would be appreciated...

2. any cool apps that you would recommend. Are there any apps that let you use excel and change the data on it, rather then just view it?

yea lack of mms is huge since i tend to use it a lot.. its like how can you have a modern phone NOT support mms.

how does the unofficial app work? (im guessing it wont work on 2.0)

I think the problem is CAG related. The site simply isn't optimized for mobile devices (i've tried my HTC TyTN, PSP, Blackberry, and iPhone). Hell, the new site even takes longer to load on a regular PC than the old one did. There are still a lot of optimizations that need to occur around here. Question is, will that actualy happen.

I haven't seen any apps that would allow such editing. Although, I can't say I would actually want to do that anyway. Especially since the iPhone doesn't have a copy/paste feature.

thanks for the info daphatty.

Up untill recently, all my cag viewing has been from my pc. I have view signatures turned on. Will turning that off dramatically improve cag loading? I have been using the iphone to view cag, but not that often and I do like seeing other members sig on my pc.

I knew there was no copy/paste feature going into getting an iPhone. Has apple commented on it? that feature even possible? I have had issues with using the zoom to go back and edit text?

Are there any decent quicken like apps? I use quicken daily to keep track of my spending. I saw the salesforce app that helps keep track of expense acct spending with the abilityul to photo the receipt. While it sounds decent, I really was looking for something like quiken.

While turning of signatures will net you some performance increases, I don't think you'll see that much of an increase. Even the front page is extremely slow on mobile devices. Not much you can do to speed that up, ya know?

Apple has commented on copy/paste. Their statement was, "it's low on our list of priorities." Weak sauce.

As for fully fledged Quicken type apps, well, I think the salesforce app is the only player. I don't think anyone else has been able to flesh out their products. It'll be a while before we start seeing some deeper apps from the App store.

anyone heard anything more on tomtom developing an app for the iphone? i dig the tele atlas maps on google maps mobile, i'd love to get some solid navigation to go with it

as far as I know, tom tom had said they had a rather complete build running a couple weeks back. Then there was some talk about them stopping production on the app. It was believed that it was due to apples service agreement when making apps for the store. There was a rule saying you can't make voice directions as an app. Tom Tom has squashed that belief by saying that it isn't a problem and they have a good relationship with apple or something to that affect....No word on if they are still doing it or not, or if other gps companies are. Considering how poor some of these early apps work, I would prefer that they do it right the first time and come out closer to the holidays.

I think this should be my last iphone question for awhile. The phone is bluetooth cabable. Could I synch/pair a camera with my iphone and send all the photos from my camera to my iphone? If this is doable, will the picture quality be reduced? I usually shoot with a high dpi setting on my digital slr.

Bluetooth in the Iphone is only for voice calls I believe

Not music nor file transfer

Apple's gotta keep that healthy accessory income coming in to keep Jobs in black mock turtlenecks!

k im planning on heading out tomm to finally get my phone.. question is that using the store locator.. there doesnt seem to be 8gb at my closest store..

is the 16gb worth it? or should i hold out for thr 8gb? these things seem to hold their value so id imagine i could always get close or more than what i pay for it a year from now
