well, then, if you liked EVA because it was a series about monsters trying to kill the Earth, then you never understood the series from the very beginning. The ending of the anime pretty much tells you what happens to every single character, and Shinji comes full circle even more than he did in the End of Evangelion film.
But seriously, EVA was never about monsters trying to kill the Earth, I realize it's a big part of the "plot", but if you missed every single introspective line, every single character development bit through the first 24 episodes, no wonder you never liked the last two.
I realize, the monsters are scary, the EVA are

ing cool, and giant robot action is SUPER fun, but EVA was never completely about that. I hate Gundam with a passion, but that's like seriously saying Gundam is just about robot pilots, only to a worse degree.
You need to watch EVA, pay attention closely, and actually think about what you just saw in each episode.
i could not disagree more.
the plot
was about monsters and the people fighting them.. that's the bulk of every single episode. you can try to say that everything was a backdrop for shinji's emotional struggles, psychological meanderings and subsequent cathartic release but i'm not buying it.
anyways you liked it, i hated it and this debate has definitely been done before
