Best Anime of all time?

Cowboy Bebop - Best combination of humor, action, drama, and characters in any anime IMO. The movie is one of my favorites, animated or otherwise.

My favorite three:

Cowboy bebop
Samuria Champloo
Gundam Wing (don't like the other gundam series as much)

I'd say DBZ for its popularity and influence as well as making anime more mainstream in the US. (imo)

naruto
naruto shipuuden
chobits
ninja scroll
spirited away
g gundam
gundam wing
vandread
akira
wicked city

and i just started Tenjou Tenge and im liking it so far. and the little bit i saw of mushishi it looked amazing but i havent made time to sit down and watch the whole series yet. oh yeah and i liked zoids.

My favorite was Macross. Though I watched it as a part of Robotech when I was 8. It was probably the first TV program I wanted to watch religiously. As for movies, I liked Akira very much.
Apossum told me he got Bible Black Only recently. Which he informs me is the most recent. It's cool.
What? How could you tell them? convertible dickgirls are hawt ^_^;; ^_^;;

One a hentai that I saw a few days back (for known reasons???) was one I got a huge kick out of called Foxy Nudes... Basically a news reporter that uses her body to do news stories... >_< it was pretty funny to me, but nobody will belive me probably.

um... nvm

I believe it. Hentai really takes the "story to drive the action" to the most absurd levels. it's hard to take it seriously or find it arousing.
Full Metal Alchemist (in its original Japanese) is hands down the best dramatic animated story ever told. Episode after episode, the story just delivers.

One Piece is tied in my opinion with Full Metal Alchemist because at currently 307 episodes released, the show is only gaining steam with its storytelling. In addition, the characters are amazingly developed and nuanced and only add to the drama and hilarity of the show.
You better not be talking about the dub of one piece...

Top 5 (at the moment):

Berserk
Great Teacher Onizuka
One Piece
Monster
Chobits/Beck/Genshiken (I know, the more I think the more I can't leave them out)

Others worth mentioning:

Evangelion
Fruits Basket
Cowboy Bebop
R.O.D.
Scrapped Princess
Trigun

Probably a bunch I'm forgeting.

I swear, no one liked those episodes, but I loved them , I thought they were an absolute masterpiece...and while I see the movie as an excellent film in its own right, I don't consider it the ending to the series.
I loved it when I saw it years ago. Now I'm motivated to watch it again, maybe this weekend.

I haven't been into Anime much lately. The little that I see seems to be silly and all the same. I was into this stuff over 10 years ago when all you had was a pitiful selection at Suncoast.

Bubblegum Crisis rocks!
So does Neon Genesis, Project A-KO (named my late dog A-KO), Robotech. Those were the shows I was into. I watched about 15 min of Naruto and flipped the channel. DBZ was cool for a while but got repetitive.

I am reading Death Note and it's good.

What would everyone recommend for me to check out based on what I like above? I think I'll try some new stuff again but do what Sarausagi does and watch the first 2 episodes, if it doesn't hook me then it never will.

Looks like you like robots. Try Gundam, Eureka 7, Big O, or Samurai 7.

Big O is probably my second favorite anime, but I wouldn't put in "the best ever territory". If it had a proper ending, then I would reconsider.

Trigun is the series I've watched all the way through the most. I think 4 times.
After that Neon Genesis, Cowboy Bebop, and Scrapped Princess.

It really depends on what kind of mood I'm in. There are many other series I've greatly enjoyed, but haven't watched more than once.
I'm probably the only fan of Texhonlize here too I'm guessing? I still have to finish that...
I've got that show and I recall that I really liked it... it's ultra depressing for some reason though. But still, it's very, very well done and a lot more similar to Gungrave than I expected it would be.

That sounds exactly like the plot of 9 O' Clock Woman.

Not that... y'know....

SithFan: if you are looking for some anime that isn't silly try some of these:

Rahxephon
Noir
Witch Hunter Robin
Samurai Champloo
Fullmetal Alchemist
Last Exile
Wolf's Rain
Berserk
Kiddy Grade
Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars
Kino's Journey (although the talking motorcycle might be a bit much, look past that - if you can - and its a really indepth series)

Those are all action oriented series that seem to have mass appeal and none of them particularly silly. Other than Kino's Journey, which is in a league of its own.

Evangelion for sure! I agree though, you have to see the end of eva for the "proper" ending. I like Hellsing a lot too, so I guess I'll put that up there as well.

the last two eps completely ignore the major plot line: monsters trying to kill the inhabitants of earth for the past 24 eps, and we don't know WTF happened to the characters.

edit: and DBZ is pretty awesome, i was addicted to the manga when i was in elementary school. however the dubbed tv show is pretty um... yeah.
the last two eps completely ignore the major plot line: monsters trying to kill the inhabitants of earth for the past 24 eps, and we don't know WTF happened to the characters.
well, then, if you liked EVA because it was a series about monsters trying to kill the Earth, then you never understood the series from the very beginning. The ending of the anime pretty much tells you what happens to every single character, and Shinji comes full circle even more than he did in the End of Evangelion film.

But seriously, EVA was never about monsters trying to kill the Earth, I realize it's a big part of the "plot", but if you missed every single introspective line, every single character development bit through the first 24 episodes, no wonder you never liked the last two.

I realize, the monsters are scary, the EVA are fucking cool, and giant robot action is SUPER fun, but EVA was never completely about that. I hate Gundam with a passion, but that's like seriously saying Gundam is just about robot pilots, only to a worse degree.

You need to watch EVA, pay attention closely, and actually think about what you just saw in each episode.

i could not disagree more.

the plot was about monsters and the people fighting them.. that's the bulk of every single episode. you can try to say that everything was a backdrop for shinji's emotional struggles, psychological meanderings and subsequent cathartic release but i'm not buying it.

anyways you liked it, i hated it and this debate has definitely been done before

Movie sucks! No, TV series sucks!

I have both.

Oh, and movie is better. I thought the TV series ending was good because it does wrap things up as far as Shinji is concerned, but IIRC, it ignores all the less significant characters like Misato, Shinji's dad, etc. The movie covers all that, and while they don't go as far into Shinji's character as they did in the TV series ending, I thought the movie was a lot more satisfying overall.

But fuck, what do I know? Ultra-violent EVA ftw.

My personal faves:

Trigun (The first anime I ever really watched, still one of my favorites)
Cowboy Bebop (The movie is excellent as well)
Berserk (There's a reason everyone is suggesting this)
Gungrave (The backstory, like eps 2-18 I think, is probably my favorite section in any anime I've watched)
Big O (Roger Smith is definately inspired by Bruce Wayne which is by no means a bad thing)
Samurai Champloo (very action oriented and really well done)

Hajime No Ippo (boxing is kool)
Kaleido Star (circus with heart)
Get Backers (I like the characters' storyline and action)
Love Hina (this is really funny)
That sounds exactly like the plot of 9 O' Clock Woman.

I've seen both of that and Foxy Nudes involves publicized rape at gun point while a sniper doesn't ever take the shot till the end. It also features a ganguro.

oooh, someone mentioned Bubblegum Crisis.

The original series had so much potential, sucks that it got cut off so early.

ok i've seen gungrave mentioned a few times now and i've got to ask: didn't the way the characters say the english names NOT piss you off? i mean come on:

BRrrrANDONNNN HEEEETuh !!!! :D

don't get the love this one gets cuz i thought it was a straight up Berserk ripoff..

Gungrave was very similar to Berserk in some of its key story points, but it was definitely different enough that it stood out. Oh, and I do enjoy the Innguurish names. Brandon Heat, though? Everyone should be proclaiming the name of BOBUU POUNDOMACKASU!!!!!!!

bubble gum crisis was the bomb back in the day. and yeah ti did get kinda hokey after a while. question though does anyone know the name of that anime series where this superhero chick would jump up in the air with her legs spread and shes kinda smother guys with her junk as her finisher. theyd never show her box but itd have rays of sunshine coming from it or a smily face sometimes. funniest stuff ever.

Thats a pretty wide spectrum you've opened up, just stating 'anime' in general.

I haven't seen all there is to see by any means, but I've always really digged fist of the north star.

Well, if we are talking old school, I guess I would have to mention Tranzor/Mazinger Z. That's the first anime I ever watched and I still think it is a very good series, but not the greatest!

If you liked FOTNS, then you need to watch Berserk next. Same good-ol' ultraviolence, but with a ridiculously good storyline. It was one of the first animes I bought and it's still my favorite.

I never saw Bubblegum Crash or the new Bubblegum Crisis 20XX, how are those?

Also, is it Starblasers or something else that has a spaceship named Yamato (or something like it)?

Thanks for the input on what to watch everyone, it'll take a long time, but I'll try out each of those series.

Bubblegum Crisis 2049 (I think that was it), was decent. Stupidest intro song ever though. Anyway, the storyline was decent, the action was decent, the characters were decent... it was decent.

AKA: Not really worth buying. Go watch Berserk instead.

*Berserk = I wish they would find a way to revive this one (horrible ending)
*Bleach
Ghost in the Shell season 1
Gungrave
HeatGuy J
Naurto (its better than I first thought. )
*Samurai 7
*Samurai Champloo

* = Top Picks

Honorable Mention:
Fist of the North Star (The newer one just for mindless violence)
Ghost in the Shell Season 2 (2nd Gig)

Finally someone says Uchu senkan Yamato. Star Blazers was a hack job though.

I already mentioned it...in my post

and yes, you are right, best anime of all time, at least in the past 5 years, only thing I think comes close is Fullmetal Alchemist and even that is a stretch.

Last episode of season two was plain mind blowing, "THE GURU, CROSS ROADS OF DESTINY", I don't think my heart has ever raced as fast during half an hour of ANYTHING..

plus when the guru is talking to Aang, made me cry actually

Guru Pathik: You’ve indeed felt a great loss. But love is a form of energy and it swirls all around us. The Air Nomads’ love for you has not left this world. It is still inside of your heart and is reborn in the form of new love. (Aang sees Katara’s face, as he first saw it) Let the pain flow. (Aang is crying but smiling and wipes away the tears) Very good.

Aang: We're all connected. Everything is connected.
Guru Pathik: That's right. Even the separation of the four elements is an illusion

and then cutting to Toph bending metal...just plain amazing!!! god, I can't wait until season 3. the animation was mind blowingly beautiful as well, for these entire episodes.
