▼ Read Me! FAQ ▼ Pre-Order $10 Program
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can I pre-order and purchase multiple copies of a
qualifying game and get multiple awards?
No. There is a limit of one (1) award per My Best Buy
member per game title.
What if I pre-ordered a qualifying game before I
saw this offer?
If you pre-ordered a qualifying game before seeing
this offer, you’ll still qualify for the offer as long as
your member ID is attached to the transaction.
When will I receive my $10 reward certificate?
For each qualified purchase, you will receive 500 My
Best Buy points (worth $10 in reward certificates)
credited to your account approximately 15–20 days
after street date or store pickup.
If I pre-order a game now using my GCU and the
game releases after my membership ends, will
I still get the 20% off discount?
- From BestBuy Support Forums (link):
For in-store pre-orders, I can definitively say that if
your GCU membership is expired when you
complete your pickup, you will not receive the 20%
discount. This is because in-store pre-orders are not
processed until the time of pickup, and we only
collect an up-front deposit.

Pre-orders made on BestBuy.com are not as cut and
dry as in-store, but it is possible to retain your GCU
discount on a title released after your membership
expires for these types of pre-orders. Reason being,
when you place your pre-order the GCU discount is
calculated up front, and we then pre-authorize the
discounted total with your bank. If all goes well, the
discount can be retained upon release, however,
there is no guarantee.

A sure way to lose the discount on BestBuy.com
pre-orders is if any modifications are made to the
order prior to release, but after your membership
has expired. These modifications could be updating
the billing address, changing the form of payment,
and others. This is because when a modification is
made it triggers another authorization on your form of
payment, which should recalculate the price if your
GCU membership is no longer active.

Any upcoming games have this promotion? Anything new announced recently?
For the moment, anyway, just the ones listed in the OP: Deathloop, Halo Infinite, Outriders, and Far Cry 6. Three of those are listed on Best Buy's landing page for this; not sure why Deathloop isn't listed there, but it does have the $10 banner on the actual product listings.

But preorders are still pretty scarce for 2021 titles right now, and I'm sure once more start popping up, there'll be more offers as well.

For those with gcu left, check your emails.  I was just told they were canceling active memberships and refunding the purchase price via physical checks.  Looks like I’m going all digital sooner than later.

It's time to pop in to your local stores for some Spring clearance. A lot of games are going for way lower then their online price.

A few examples:

NBA 2K20 Xbox $8 ($26 online)

Control Xbox $8 ($24)

Assetto Corsa Competizione Xbox/PS4 $11 ($32/$34)

Snack World Switch $13 ($38)

Skully Switch $8 ($21)

Robotics;Notes Double Pack Switch $11 ($34)

Blood & Truth $11 ($26)

Of course, YYMV. These prices are going to vary by store. If the site has something on clearance and your store has it in stock then it's probably going to have a lower price. I actually bought one of the games on the list last week and it was restocked at a lower price so prices are only going to get better.

Someone in another thread said Astral Chain and Daemon X Machina are also on clearance. None around me unfortunately.

I’m tempted by Snack World, but it only seems to be available at a further out Best Buy that isn’t anywhere near errands so I can’t justify wasting the gas.

Here a bunch more I noticed. Obviously not all will be worth the drive.

Switch:

-Moto GP 20 $11

-Rock of Ages III $11

-Railway Empire $11

-Narcos $11

-Escape Game $8

Xbox:

-The Evil Within 2 $11

-Just Dance 2020 $8

-NHL 20 $8

-FIFA 20 $11

-Golf Club 2019 $5.49

-Rocket Arena $3

-Warhammer Vermintide II $13

-Project Highrise $11

PS4:

-FIFA 20 $8

-NHL 20 $8

-Ghost Recon Breakpoint $5.49

-Just Dance 2020 $8

-Samurai Showdown $19

YMMV.

I've never had great luck with clearance games in my area. They keep 99% of the games behind the counter and don't usually update price tags out on the floor, is there a better way to figure out prices other than hassling an employee to look everything up? Might have to go in today, maybe things have changed with how they handle this as I haven't been in a little while.

The app used to tell you the in store price if it knew you were there but not anymore. If your store insists on having all the games locked up and unpriced then I would suggest coming up with a list of skus you know are on clearance and in stock. Then you can have them check the prices first and only have them dig for it if they are low enough.

Got Snack World and Blood and Truth at clearance price, but Railway Empire and Robotic;Notes are not mark down.

Went into today to the closest Best Buy and found Snack World. No other clearances items there. The switch shelves were rather bare. Plus it was kinda depressing in Best Buy, it was the first time I went in since they let all those employees go.

I did see Vitamin Connection, but I’m not sure if it is a game I would enjoy.

Anyone remember if mass effect legendary was part of $10 certificate? If not, I’ll be returning it since I got one cheaper from target

Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream - PS4 and Switch - $10 gift card for preordering, release date is 2/25

And I figured they would eventually do this since they keep pushing their paid Total Tech, but the Best Buy rewards program will only have 1 tier from May 3, 2022 on.

I figured they would try to get the Elite Plus members into that program at a discount or something. Not shocking that they would kill it right after I get Elite Plus for the first time in a many years. Oh, well.

It’s a miscalculation on their part I think. It won’t drive more people to Totaltech. It will drive them away from Best Buy. To Amazon mostly. Or Costco which while it has a membership cost is less than Totaltech and has a better return policy.

I'll never understand why stores kill rewards program, other than banking that their customers will keep shopping there no matter what. Which is a huge mistake in a world where Amazon exists.

When K-Mart killed their game program, I don't think I stepped foot in another one. Every time GS kills part of their rewards, I shop there less & less. I only get something from Amazon if its the only option, and once my S&S items get under 20, I'll probably end my Prime sub due to price increases.

With Best Buy, if all things were equal between them & other retailers, I'd at least shop there to get my Elite Plus level. Now, there's no incentive to shop there, other than the rare $10 rewards. And for all the boasting of Total Tech exclusive sales... yeah they haven't done anything meaningful there since the holidays. Buying something with an AMEX card is a better warranty than anything they can offer.

Completely forgot in my rant that I'd rather pay for a Costco membership than TotalTech which is, what, almost 4x the price? Best Buy doesn't offer anything unique other than being a B&M electronic store that has more stuff than a Walmart/Target electronic department.

At least with Costco you also get discounted gas.

Yeah, there are clear unique services that you get at Costco that are different than most stores other than BJs/Sams Club, which are both subscription based anyways.

Best Buy is really leveraging that you want to go there for their... services? I've heard good things about their install service, and I guess Geek Squad is a good substitute if you don't have a local electronics guru. Also I didn't even realize they still offered video game trade-ins, although it looks like the site hasn't been updated in a long time.

When multiple stores offered the same price or could be price matched, I would choose Best Buy to earn elite status and get free shipping for the next year. Poor move for them to remove this incentive.

It's not just to drive people to TotalTech, but also to their credit cards.  The email says you only get point banking if you have a credit account, otherwise you get issued certs and have to use them right away.  They are doing this completely the wrong way, they are trimming benefits to try to force people to pricey upgrade.

Amazon, the gold standard on this, did it the opposite.  They made it relatively cheap when it came out, then added benefits to sweeten the deal.  First it was only free shipping for $60 (?) a year.  Then they added video and later made that better by a lot.  Now they have other various perks.  Then the price went up, but after people were hooked.

My Best Buy will be fine if you have a credit card with them and pay it off every month you use it religiously.  If you don't have one and don't want the lackluster TotalTech, there are only downsides and it will cost them customers.

This announcement comes right before the end of the quarter. I’m betting they didn’t make the Totaltech numbers they promised and will use this as what they are doing to ‘fix’ that. Of course I don’t foresee this translating to many conversions of elite/elite plus to Totaltech.

I personally went to Best Buy first because I had elite, but now for appliances it’ll probably be Home Depot or Lowe’s. Small electronics Target or Costco. I already buy most of my video games from Target.

Despite being Elite, I didn’t know too much about Total Tech until I looked it up. They’re out of their minds if they think they’re getting $200 out of me to replace what I had with Elite before. Like, straight looney bin crazy.

I really thought Best Buy had figured it out for a bit there but this makes no sense at all. Between the dramatic scale down of their store sales floors to effectively being warehouses first and now the gutting of their loyalty program, I don’t think they have a coherent vision of what they want to be. Like, I get that online shopping is becoming prevalent but they’re at a point where they’re paying retail rents for what’s effectively a warehouse. At least with Target diving into store pickup, they’re still maintaining their in store experience and they still get some foot traffic. There’s just no reason to step foot into Best Buy anymore.

As somebody else mentioned, they skipped the "offer lots of services for a low cost" model and went right to charging out the ass for services that a small fraction of their customers use.

I asked a friend who actually buys a ton from there, and they mentioned that BB hasn't come out with a TotalTech Business product yet, meaning that for their needs, it doesn't make much sense because all of the services would be tied to 1 person vs a business.

I think the move to kill a program that was dated and old tells us their telemetry was reporting only a very small portion of customers were achieving elite plus anymore. That speaks volumes in terms of business health and how I think big box stores are feeling the pinch of online shopping trends. I no longer shop there as I shift to digital and tech purchases have slowed down considerably for myself at least. I don't think they fully understood that games, music, and movies were their "loss-leaders" to get people in the door and it's costing them now.

Go with Lowes and get one of their cards and pay it off every month. It gives you a straight up 5% off, like RedCard at Target. And unlike BestBuy, that 5% doesn't count towards a future purchase, it comes off the current one. The real key for ALL of them is to pay it off every month, because the interest rate is stupid high as are fees.

BestBuy seems to not understand how easily they lift right out of this equation without those additional Elite perks. Lowe's has equal or better for appliances and installation, Target covers the rest. Sure, an occasional prepurchase two weeks ahead for a $10 reward will still be in the cards, but they are getting rid of everything that made them desirable over the others.

Best Buy still has zero interest cc which I use often. As long as it stays that way they still have my business. Just bought a fridge n they installed it free, delivered it. Took 5 mins. Very professional.

depends, don’t go there for pc service, as someone who has shifted to cyber, they once offer me a salaried role for a geek squad lead role, I’ll say it was decent, but wayyyyy less than most companies pay for entry level help desk. I wouldn’t trust their pc advice.

I have to say that I was relatively unfazed by the GCU changes when they were made. I shop(ped) at Best Buy enough otherwise that it still made sense for me to keep doing so. I was basically printing rewards bucks.

But they just keep making it worse/smaller and smaller. They were really establishing themselves as a successful B&M revival it seemed, so I just don't get it now. I'm trying to think about it from their perspective, too. Did they effectively peak in our current online-dominated market, and the only way now to continue to expand profit is to pull back on programs?

At least with GCU they let everyone keep their benefits.

Don’t worry I’m sure next earnings call, they will have record profits.

I have something I bought impulsively at best buy recently. Was leaning towards keeping it to keep my Best Buy status. No worries about that now, I'll return it and use my amazon credit!

Ever since my GCU ended a few years ago, my shopping at Best Buy dropped dramatically.

I was an elite member every year when I had GCU. And never got back to that level once I didnt.

Because I wasnt an elite member, my shopping dropped even more because no free shipping.

I just had my first trip to Best Buy this year because of the random $10 cert they sent to me. And before that, my last purchase at Best Buy was when they sent me my birthday cert.

So yeah Best Buy has fallen off a cliff for me and doesn't look like its getting any better. They have even been lacking in sales for me

People always mentioned free shipping and shipping in general but I rarely ever have the option for shipping in my area. It's almost always store pickup only.mystery cert was the first time in a while shipping was available. But I don't have a best buy near me and the closest one is about 17-20 minutes away.

I don't know what management changed, but Best Buy has made some very poor decisions over the past 4 years or so.  Getting rid of GCU, the Total Tech paywall, nixing elite tiers.  The store is straight garbage now, where's Circuit City when you need them?
