Best Buy Employees made penny suggestion...

CAGiversary!
OK, so this was my first venture into my local Best Buy to get some GGC's. Well, a majority of people have stated to put $5 minimum on these cars, so I go in to do just this, and ask the clerk what is the minimum she said you can put a penny on each of them if you want. So I ask, I can buy 10 and put a penny on each? (I told her I was paying back a friend) She said yes, so I bought 10 (.01 each) and walked out with the $50 dollars worth of coupons. THANKS CAG'S AND CHEAPY D MOSTLY!!!

How am I not getting a better deal? I understand that whatever you put on the card, you can use...but what if you don't have a lot of money. 10 cents for $50 worth of coupons, how is that not a good deal? I know other people have done this, but I have heard a lot about BB employees saying you could only put 5 on it, so THE IRONY is that they SUGGESTED I put a penny on there. Not very often you find BB employees wanting to help you out.
Yeah he is. He's getting $50 worth of savings for only 10 cents.
If I understand the GGC right, you use the money that you put on the card towards the purchase of the game. So if he buys a $50 game using the card with a penny on it, the game comes to 45$ and he has to pay 44.99 out of his pocket. If the card has $5 on it, then he has to pay $04 out of his pocket.
Yeah he is. He's getting $50 worth of savings for only 10 cents.
but he keeps the ten cents. even if he put on 100 n each, he still would have the 100. the coupons are free.

Right, I think there's idiocy about here...

You have to spend AT LEAST $20 to even use the coupon. So if you put $5 on each gift card, you'd just end up putting that money towards your purchase...

Any amount of money that you put on a giftcard under $15 is just as smart, fine, etc. What's the deal?

That's not what irony means! Let's check the dictionary:
"incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result."

So, if it turned out you could put $0.01 on the card but not $5, THAT would be irony.

And it really doesn't matter how much you put on the card, except the more people do a stupid 1 cent thing, the more likely it is to be cancelled.

Since the card can't be used with games under $19.99 (or .95) might as well put $14.99 (+tax) on it. You pay the same amount at the end anyway, and this way you don't even have to have any cash on you. 1 card = 1 GH title (or equivalent).

The coupons can only be used on games or accessories that $20 or less, so in doing what I did, I am going to save 25% on 10 games by just putting a penny on each card. I am NOT going to use the gift cards, just the coupons. The point of the GGC is that yes if you put 5 on it, you get a 5 dollar coupon and then you can use the 5 on the card later. But, by putting .01 on it, you get the coupon, and save 4.99 per coupon. It doesn't get any better than that. In summary $.10=$50=CHEAP ASS GAMER!

Can you use teh coupon without the card?

NO! It's $20 or MORE. Also, you have to use the coupon with the gift card...right? And plus, if you're going to be spending the money at BB anyway, it doesn't matter if you put the money on the card and THEN have them scan it to pay for the game, or you just pay for the game. It's the same cash.

yeah, but it only works on $20 or greater. adn not using the card is stupid. you arent a true cheapass if you throw away 10 cents

EDIT: evilmax beat me too it. but you dont need the card. the card and coupon are sperate. ive used them seperately before.

Ok, yeah, now I understand, I had to think about it a little more.

The coupon is valid for games $19.99 or more.

You can use your gift card along with the $5 off. If you're not going to use the gift cards at all then you're actually losing $0.10. The $5 that you put on a gift card can be put towrads your purchase along with the $5 off.

Observe:

$19.99 - $5 off = $14.99 (you can use whatever the value on the GC is on the purchase whether is $0.10 or $5) Unless the coupons are stackable (it's not, unless you found a clueless cashier), then this is not a deal at all.

Edit: beaten my so many before me.

OK...How is it not a deal? I am only going to use it for $20 games...so I am saving $5 per game. The point is that I got the 10 coupons for 10 cents, I understand that whatever I put on the card I can use. BUT I don't have a lot of money to put onto the card, therefore putting the 10 cents was the CHEAPEST way for me to get the coupons. And HOW am I not a CAG if I dont use the 10 cents...I mean, would you wanna sit there as they scan a penny off of each card? I may be cheap, but I am also impatient...

my 2 cents:

1. if people do the 1 cent thing too much, BB will get suspicious (which most likely, they already are) and get rid of the coupons.

2. I understand that if you put 1 cent on the card instead of $5, then that means you're spending less money at that point in time. You WILL end up spending money later in order to utilize the coupons, but at least it won't be all at once in one big lump. This is how a person with not much money would have to do it.

my routine is usually this: go to BB, buy 2 GGC for $5 ea. The I go home. When I want a game, I go back and use a coupon & card. When I buy the game for $20, I also but another $5 card, so: $20 - $5 GC - $5 coupon + new $5 card = $15. Then I just repeat the cycle. That way, I always just pay $15, and I am always prepared for my next trip, and I don't have to bother with the suspicious 1 cent route.

I understand what you guys have said about the penny...BUT the EMPLOYEES suggested to me. I was not planning on dropping just a cent on each one, but they recommended I do it, so I did. SO maybe thats my point of this thread, BB employees made the suggestion, sorry for the confusion.

Heh, it IS kind of ironic...

It's cool, man. Honestly, I've had BB employees on more than one occasion say things like, "I'm surprised corporate hasn't nixed these coupons yet, seeing how everyone abuses them and all." But most register monkeys don't give two runny farts about the company that pays them minimum wage...

Hey, do the 1 cent thing; if you have to pinch pennies and spread your spending out over time, that's the way to go. But, my 2 rules for the GGC are:

1. Don't buy a zillion of them at once, especially if you know that there are other CAGs in your area. I know that I share a BB with a couple of other CAGs, and there have been times when they were sold out of GGCs for a few weeks at a time. that's a bummer!!

2. If you're buying 5 games at once, don't make the register person ring up each one seperately so yu can use 5 coupons. 2 transactions at most. That way, people behind you don't have to wait, you won't be a dick to the cashier, and the store will be less likely to get a bad taste in their mouths about the way we use these coupons.

But other than those two basic concepts, shit, do it how it works for you!!

i only did the one cent thing b/c i lose things easily, so it's for "insurance"...and if i had lost the card w/ 20 bucks or something...well...
LOL you guys are killing me...its NOT IRONIC then it is IRONIC...make up your mind
Is it ironic that this thread is Not ironic??? Hmm....

Or is it Ironic that a thread that claimed to be ironic turns out to really be ironic???

hmm....

Best Buy pays 7.00/hour in my state (compared to 5.15 minimum wage). ;-)

Don't talk semantics with ME, boy!!!
^^gratuitous movie quote...

I went in today, and the clerk pretty much told me the same thing. He said put as much as you want, or put even $2 down. We want you to use it, he said.

So I threw down $1 on four GGC. I can't wait to use them!

Yeah, plus they get to buy some stuff at the price best buy gets it. Pretty good discount.

I thought that there were ridiculous threads, but this one is going to have people shooting themselves in the head. Come on boys, wise up.

pssh, the real cheap ass way to do things is to buy one, puts a penny on it, use that penny to buy another until u have about 4 or 5 coupons, then use the last one to buy a penny guide

get with it n00b

They won't let you buy a gift card with a gift card. I already tried. pwned.

gotta love their GGC's. I don't see my local best buys restocking their GGCs though, as they're running pretty low on them.
Since this thread makes little or no sense I just have one thing to say Organicow man your wife is hot hook a brother up .
Using these things in moderation may help to keep them around . . . at some point Best Buy accounting is likely to notice that people are just getting free coupons.

They hope that people are actually using these as gifts . . .

In other words, "don't kill the goose that laying golden eggs"

I don't understand. Why doesn't everyone just go to BB when they want to buy a game, pick up a GGC, go the register with the GGC and game, put the price of the game + tax - $5 on the card and then trade the card for the game? I don't see the point of ever bringing one of these things outside of the store...

Am I going to Best Buys that are owned by an entirely different corporate entity? I can barely convince the employees at the BBs I go to to let me put "JUST" $5 on the card to get the GGC. They'll run off to the manager, act snotty to me, in general make things really inconvenient. According to this thread, though, everybody elses BB tells them to only put $.01 on it.

Oh well, but do your Best Buy employees tell you that they should come over to your house, or try to sell you mags/GameFly subs, or ask you "whatcha got there, let's see let's see, I wanna see what games you got".

EDIT: Be careful not to pick up the old expired GGCs (I still see plenty of them around), or you'll just be out $.10! :D

the first time i bought a ggc, i bought 2 old ones and they still let me use the coupon even though they expired :) i did bring the receipt just in case they had a problem though...

I dont understand GGC's. I know it stands for gamer gift card but do you pay for it and then its just a gift card? Cuz arent gift cards supposed to be presents?

they're supposed to be presents for other people, but you use it for yourself. Or rather just use the coupon and give the 1 cent card to someone else.
