Just got this email:

The game is changing. New benefits. New rewards.
It's a whole new way to play the game.

Reward Zone® Gamers Club is leveling up. On September 12, 2011,
you will begin earning double points on new game software, including
digital content and accessories purchases. Plus, for $14.99 per year,
you can join the optional paid level—Gamers Club Unlocked—where
you'll enjoy access to even greater benefits: REWARD ZONE GAMERS CLUB
• A free subscription to @Gamer, the exclusive gaming magazine

• 10% off all pre-owned software purchases

• 10% bonus credit on trade-in software

• Reward Zone Gamers Club exclusive offers
Between now and September 11, 2011, you will continue to earn 500 bonus points for every $150 you spend on video games, PC games and video game accessories at Best Buy® stores or BestBuy.com®.

Then on September 12, 2011, you'll automatically be part of the new Reward Zone Gamers Club. And you'll have the opportunity to visit a Best Buy store and 'level up' to Reward Zone Gamers Club Unlocked. And because you’ve been a loyal Gamers Club member, we want to give you a preview of the new club. So going back to June 1, 2011, you'll also earn double points on all new software and accessories purchases.

All this plus the Reward Zone points you earn every day for nearly all your Best Buy purchases, including gaming hardware. For the latest Reward Zone Gamers Club information, visit MyRZ.com.

I'm not sure if the doubling points thing actually benefits us. The way it's worded, it sounds like they'll be getting rid of the 500 bonus points for every $150 in game purchases. Which means double point purchases is actually a downgrade since we'll get 300 points instead of 500 points for every $150 spent.

The $15 a year thing is the same price as a @Gamer magazine subscription right now. Not sure if the 10% saved on trade ins and preowned games would be worth it enough.

This is great... i'm sure they will also have more promotions and bonuses to go with this ! $14.99 is cheap for a year of savings !

I just recently got the 500 gamer points but I don't see a gift cert. How do long does it take to process?

Oh snap! This is going to get Enuf into a rage. I am paying for my 5/100 with trade credit so it won't bother me but for those counting on the ~$20 from gamers club will be miffed.

Sounds like crap. 10% off used games is worthless at my Best Buy, seeing as how the used section consists of one rack's worth of overpriced crap.

Guess I need to spend the extra $11 to earn my next $10 cert before September.

And wheeeeee, I get $10 in certificate bonuses for buying $300 worth of games instead of $25. Hooray, progress!
meh I just subscribed to the gamers magazine :|
You get put into the club I would assume then right? If not I will not be happy.

It is still more than Gamestop gives but I am miffed about this.

Hmm...never bothered upgrading from a Rewards Zone membership to a Gamer's Club version in the first place. The coupons might be worth subscribing for the Best Buy's Gamer Magazine, but I barely read the Game Informers I get from Gamestop. At least try Best Buy to 1-up Gamestop by offering 11-15% more/off.

Gamer's Club was always free till now and for every $150 you get 500 bonus points which is $10.

well it was more like 2 weeks ago. but if I knew I def. would have wait. I guess I will call them in a month or 2 to see if they will send me courtesy reward pts :)

Am a power member at gamestop, and looking at this, its alot better, just because GameStop never have any good deals. BB always have great deals, looking forward to this. plus one coupon from @gamer mag pays for the whole thing by itself, so not bad at all. gamestop don't give you shit, but little points.

and cool down on pre-owned games, BB just started this, the selection will get bigger as more ppl find out about the program

Yeah, I remember a Best Buy floor representative told me that it was free to Rewards Zone members. I would forget about it and none of the cashiers would offer it, even when I was buying video games only. Oh well, I never spent $150 or more at Best Buy except once when I bought a computer.

Wonder how this will work with a Best Buy credit card. I've been using it to get double points on all my purchases currently then just paying it off. Are we getting double points of game purchases then double that if we use the credit card, effectively getting 4x points?

Actually,

In the old program:

for every $150 spent, you get 150 base pts + 500 gamer club pts = 650 pts

In the new program:

for every $150 spent, you get 2x 150 base pts = 300 pts

It's a downgrade, screw them.

This is not a deal. Honestly. It's kind of a screwjob is a few different ways. Shit my BB doesn't even have pre-owned games. Not to mention, the one time I attempted to trade in some games they wanted my reciepts.....

Don't get me wrong. I love BB for alot of the sales/promos and shit they have, but messing with the gamers club program kind of blows. They really dont need to try to get in on a cut of the preowned market. I really see this going bad for them in the longrun.

Such a load of crap.....they spin it like they are "increasing" the rewards, but you really are going to get less.....With the current program, you get a bonus $10 for every 150 you spend......and then your 150/250 (under normal rewardzone) toward receiving a $5 certificate.....with this new program you will get 300 points for spending that same 150, which is only a $5 certificate with 50/250 towards another $5....so it is essentially less then half of what it was before.

Although I have to admit, the $14.99 for the gamestop like bonus discounts (10% trade ins/used) will be pretty nice as long as their trade in values don't tank. Also, the bestbuy magazine w/ the coupons is a lot more of an incentive as well.

yeah this is messed up..I would always by my release week games there to reach the $150 for $10 cert..I see no incentive for me to go there anymore now..

weak Best Buy, just when it seemed you were turning a corner and actually pricing games decently lately..

I heard they are opening up new stores call BestStop or Game Buy... I mean Best Buy is using the exact same business model as Gamestop. I went by there today and the used games are priced just like Gamestop but they are "shrinkwrapped" so you can't see what condition the games are in. I guess they want a piece of the pie.

The 500 points for $150 was the only reason to shop BB over amazon because of the tax issue. Now the margin swings back in favor of Amazon in my state.
So this means on Sept 12th I get retroactive points for my purchases since June 1st?
Only if you sign up for Gamers Club Unlocked (which is a really dumb name btw).

We were in BB yesterday and the clerk that was telling us about the new Gamers Club said it's "Best Buy's plan to shut GameStop down". Good luck with that Best Buy, good luck.

He made the point that you could use your trade-in credit to buy anything in the store which would be cool but too bad gamers trade in their games for more games. I can't picture my BF saying "Hmmmm, let me get rid of these games so I can put $20 towards a new fridge".

He also said BB will give better trade-in values for games. That to me just means that they'll have to sell their used games for more than GameStop does. They already do. Most of the used games they have, you can find in the same store brand new but cheaper.

Couldn't agree with you more

Ah, thanks for clarifying.

Well, back to Amazon it is. BB was starting to get competitive, with all of the deals they’ve been offering lately. Wrong move there, BB.

Trade-in credit has always been good on anything in the store. I've traded in around 10 games and didn't use any of that credit towards another game. I'm sure there are other people besides myself that buy more than video games at Best Buy.

MY only incentive to join the program is @Gamer MAG, I payed $20 last year for subscription, and it has saved me almost $100 on games.

I won't be buying in to this plan either. Spending money to earn potential bonus certificates. Not worth it to me. The free certs were the main thing keeping me shopping at Best Buy. I guess I'll save myself some money on every purchase and buy from Amazon from now on.

I'm surprised that nobody has posted their rants and complaints on the BB forums. Or do you get banned for posting constructive criticism that's positive or negative.

This reminds me of how ebay changes stuff for the worse, but tries to spin it like it's a great deal for members. Like reducing listing fees or giving so many listings free, but jacking up final value fees and even taking fees out of shipping amount. They don't tell you all the ways it's worse.....hosers.

Totally expecting them to shorten the name to BB PUR. Ok ok, gotta watch the total copyright infringement, so since GS dropped it, how about The BB Edge? That actually doesn't sound half bad, if only it did give them an edge, which is certainly debatable atm :D

looks like I need to spend $5 at Best Buy to get my last $10 cert.

Glad I didn't take advantage of their pre-order deal, i'd of been pissed with this change.

As a side note, I just don't understand Gamestop. They used to have pretty decent coupons - 30% off, 25% off, B2G1, etc. These were really nice and brought me into the store almost every time. And now as their competition increases, they are pulling back and becoming less competitive.

not worth it. my local bb stores have crap for used games, less than half a rack and it's usually just Wii titles. Also, for the price i'll stick to gamestop. Gs usually has good deals, like buy 2 get 1 free (games and/or accessories). BB is taking the plunge, they're going downhill slowly..

On top of it they now want another $15 from me to "unlock" this "deal". I just got a subscription last month and have not received one magazine yet. So am I going to have to get 2 magazines a month for this? Will they just extend my subscription by a year? It is already a dumb idea and if they make their subscribers pay again for this I might just go with Amazon even if it means spending $30-40 more on my 5 games this fall. I will take my $400 in trade in credit and buy Kindle cards and tell the cashier exactly why I am doing it.
looks like I need to spend $5 at Best Buy to get my last $10 cert.

Unfortunately I am $83 away from my next cert so no last cert for me.

I hate to play devils advocate but if you save 10% on used games (and they actually start having used games in store) then that may be more financially rewarding than getting a RC for every 150 spent. Who knows how this will play out, but I think you guys are condemning it a little prematurely.

Yes this is true. But the $15 upfront cost means your first $150 spent covers that. Then after that you would save $15 on the next $150 spent. I am assuming the 2x point are on used games now? If so then if you spend your money on used games your first $300 would net you a savings of $25 (discount plus $10 RZ cert) and not $20 but only if it is used. New games this won't apply.

Except you have to pay $15 a year for this reward, and you'd have to be buying used games exclusively. Last time I checked, their used games section is pretty bad unless there's some other promos going on.

I'd rather have my $10 for every $150 game purchases. It's easy to rack $150 up between new game purchases and digital cards.
Same here. Like just last week
I subscribed about two weeks ago. We'll see what will happen.

I just recently went over the $150 mark on July 20th. It says congrats! You've recently earned 500 Gamers bonus points when i log on to my account, and i also have a point adjustment in my purchase history for 500 Bonus Points. But i haven't received the cert yet. I hope i don't get screwed and they still issue it to me.

It will be available around Aug 20th; there's the 35 day waiting period.
