Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).
You can go over 3 I've done it by accident & haven't had an issue. But I think the # of games that go over 3 will do it.

There was a survey sent out a few months ago regarding the remodel it'll be a area for all ?'s & stuff. I see several stores are moving their door security people since all 4 stores I went to since sat. had the monitors removed altogether.
I think there's some sort of labor budget squeeze company wide. Security is out at all the stores I go to. One store I went to had no registers opened on 2 different days. It was roped off and all transactions were routed through customer service. The last time I was there I waited 20 minutes just to get someone to process my 3 game trade.

Just finished my first BB trade-in:
Call of Duty 2 [360]: $3
Darkness II [360]: $6
Dead Rising 2 [360]: $5
Saints Row 2 [360]: $5
Saints Row 3 [360]: $12
----------------------
Total: $31
+ 100% trade-in promotion: $31
+ GCU 10%: $3.10
= $65.10
PS2 and PSP games are all the same for trade in at Best Buy
My mistake. I had forgotten that Rock Band Unplugged is screwed up in their system and that's why it trades in for $8 at the moment.

Best Buy Claims that they did not reduce any loss prevention positions - but it seems that nationwide they are being sent onto the floor instead of standing at the doorway as a change made in order to keep people happy and less annoyed when you enter and leave the store.

Best Buys says "As you know, we have rolled out a new U.S. operating model, which includes restructuring teams within the stores – but we did not reduce our overall number of loss prevention positions. I cannot speak to any changes made by local management at a particular store."

According to one best buy employee they are "still part of the store, but their role is now to walk around the store looking out for stolen merch, quizzing the staff on important store numbers, and occasionally helping out customers as well. Honestly, it's more of an afterthought, as the main focus of our store is selling the products and attaching all the plans and so forth. No more receipt checking, no putting little stickers on products being returned, and no one at the front to direct customers to certain departments."

I am almost completely sure that Best Buy only accepts console trade-ins online. (If I am wrong, feel free to correct me.)

I am trying to take advantage of the 100% trade in bonus. GS only has 50% bonus. I want to upgrade to a 3DS XL, but GS will give me $100 for my 3ds. Can I buy a Visa Gift Card from best buy with a best buy gift card?

Did a trade in today using my passport. Worked, but the combined effect of a brainless employee and the oddity of using my passport meant a 3 game trade took forever. First we argued over it being ok to trade without a case (I won that after pointing to the pre-owned shelf full of games without cases - something he initially tried to explain was the result of being sent games in the wrong cases so they had to repackage them...). He then questioned whether or not a passport was a valid form of ID. Took a fair amount of prodding to just type in my passport ID number where the license number would go. They kept saying an invalid license number would cause it to fail. Sure enough went though. Then they said that they could type any number in there and it would work cause it doesn't check. Some blue shirts man... I tell ya. Luckily that wasn't my normal store, where I imagine the process would be much smoother.

Come on, I need to know if next week will still have 100% bonus so I know how long I'm going to keep Madden... The DVD/Blu ad is up, so hopefully we know the gaming side soon!

Midnight Metal goes out of his way to PM me a lot of the times as soon as he knows. So soon as he knows, CAG/I will know and I will update the OP so that you know.

My gut says that 10/6 is really going to happen. Get people to build up credit and build up their used game selection right before the holiday shopping season.
So is it fraud/illegal if I buy lollipop chainsaw and prototype 2 with my coupons then trade them in right when I buy them?
Am I missing something here? If I'm reading this accurately, you would be buying Prototype 2 for $20 with the coupon and LC for $30 with coupon ... and then trading them in for $18 and $28 in store credit?

Yeah for some reason I thought they were both $40. I swear I saw somebody say that they bought lollipop and prototype for $10 after coupon lol

I traded in a couple games tonight and the guy had never done it before which proved a royal pain, but it did have one benefit. In the process he read out from the screen that the 100% promo ends on the 6th. He read that out because apparently a colleague had told him it was already over, so he was surprised. So I guess take that with a grain of salt, but if it were me I wouldn't chance it past the 6th.

Edit: unless he said 10/6??? Ok, now I'm unsure. :)

Oh, and can verify that you can buy Kindle gift cards with Best Buy gift cards, and that Kindle cards are good on anything at amazon. Woohoo! :)

Did your GCU account have your drivers license on record before the edits were made?

Those folks may have had stores which had the games on manual store markdowns/clearance though. That's one of the YMMV aspects of the coupon deals, in that if your local store has a lower price than the MSRP for some reason the coupon SHOULD work with that price.

The usual gaming rep was working yesterday when I went to trade in what I did and he said it is supposed to go till 10/6.

I certainly hope he's right as that gives me a month rather than a day to try finishing these three titles. If not though, then I just won't worry about trading anything in, since there's nothing on the horizon that I really want anyway. The only title I'm kinda hyped for next is GTA V and that doesn't even have a solid/verifiable release date yet. Although if the report from a while ago of a Rockstar rep letting October sometime slip on his Facebook or Twitter account was right I'm gonna be scrounging around for the cash to buy it for sure.:whistle2:#

No idea. I've used my GCU account with three other people doing a trade in for me in the past, so I just assumed that the information was more or less separate.
100% is going until 10/6. There are pieces of paper up in the gaming department at my Best Buy that state when it ends.
Saw the same thing at my local BB.
I think there's some sort of labor budget squeeze company wide. Security is out at all the stores I go to. One store I went to had no registers opened on 2 different days. It was roped off and all transactions were routed through customer service. The last time I was there I waited 20 minutes just to get someone to process my 3 game trade.
dude im seeing the same at all my local bbs, yellow shirt guys are gone, i guess bb got smart and found out guys who mark receipts were useless lol. i remember i did the same job when i was in high school..it was awesome, didnt do sheet. i used to work at circuit city, guess this is karmic justice for bb, although i love their game deals and dont wanna see them go out of business.

I'm starting to think I should transfer another $50 to amazon via Kindle gift cards. That would leave me with only $10.06 credit at BB. Spend that on an MS points card or something.

Anyone know what the actual ID requirement is? I'd like to be able to do some trades, but my license is on the ban list. What about Firearms license? I don't have a passport since I have never left the country so I'm not going to pay $50 or whatever it costs for a passport.

Thoughts?

Best Buy has restructured a lot of their employee roles from what I've been told chatting with my usual gaming reps. Like they're not just gaming reps anymore, and have to be cross trained to handle like 3 or 4 different departments. Most of the other positions are the same way. Sounds like it is pretty similar for LP too. I thought this was a pretty good post about it a few pages back.

A couple stories about it here:

Their first attempt at trying to stop the money loss, and I honestly think that is one of the bigger issues with them. An employee walking around that you stop to ask a question has NO clue because it isn't their department, and I didn't ask any mind blowing questions. Just if they knew where a certain item might be.

that makes sense. saw the usual LP walking around yesterday and communicating with employees and customers. they don't even tag my video game trade ins anymore. last time they just pointed me to the back where the video game kiosk is.

question, if I trade in the same game (3 copies) at once, do the employees call their manager or say anything to discourage the trade in, I know it's 3 per year of the same game but?
edit: of all this employee talk, many of them are still clueless. I saw a girl at customer service for returns, etc. She is now a geek squad agent...

Their jobs are so easy and they still can't do them, If I was to work there, I can easily handle, TV's, Computers, Games, cell phones, just the training for their internal systems is all I would need.

I have never traded 3 copies in at one time. You better have a good story to tell if they ask unless the gaming rep is cool. They might not deny you but it is a big risk doing that. I have done 2 before and I was asked about it every time.

what if I do this, I trade in DJ hero for the PS3, and Wii, and Rock band unplugged for the PSP. They are all similar games, I can I say I love music on all platforms?

When I was trading in dupes before my trade ban, I would always tell them that the three copies were from my system and my friends systems as we always seem to buy the same games to play co-op/multiplayer over PSN and that my friends aren't very savvy about doing trades and would likely let the games rot on their shelves till they trade them into GS for next to nothing.

Usually I'd just get a smirk and a nod from some of the employees, as if to say that their friends do the same stupid shit.;) Only once did I have employees asking me about games I was trading in, but that was when I did the :ps2: sports title trade from GS to there. I left most of the stickers on the games from GS.#-o

I think you are fine honestly. If they ever asked me about the same game on different platform I usually just said one was my brothers. Different platforms are going to get less of a look than 3 PS3 copies of Bulletstorm. :)

alright man, thanks a lot! :applause: Going to trade in some games at Gamestop and buy those games and head out to Best Buy tomorrow for the trade in  to buy ME 3.
Edit: I'm in process of diversifying my trade in portfolio to maintain stealth.

I've yet to have them ask me about the games I am trading in, even when I bring in two of the same title at a time (sometimes I'll have three different sets of two games.) Making small talk keeps em occupied. Ask em what games they are most excited for this fall and if they're reading for the onslaught of customers buying masses of new games :p

So i traded in a good chunk of my games yesterday for a very satisfying $300. A strange thing I noticed was that he didn't check any of the games. Just scanned the barcode and piled them up. Could've traded 40 empty game boxes for all he knew. Didn't even care that some of the games didn't have a barcode at all. Just put it through as "disc only".
A painless trade in for me, which is a plus, but very careless if I must say.

It is working right now for me, I just checked it and am surprised at some of the trade in values for some games as they are better than gamestop. you can trade in battlefield 3 for about $24 @ bb while gs gives you only $17
Darksiders 2 is listed as a hot title for 20, but the tradein on the estimator still says 16, has anyone traded it in today?
Yeah I went and trade in today. The trade system has not update, so Darksiders 2 is $16. I had to get a manager to give me back the rest that I was suppose to get.
I had to show the hot title page to get the extra.
If it was working I would have got 20*2= 40 + 2(10%) = $42.

I got $43.60 because of 16*2= 32 + 1.6 = $33.6. I was given $10 off my purchase, so that gave me $43.6. It should of been only $8.40 off my purchase.
