BEST BUY'S VIDEO GAMES TRADE-IN PAGE

Check most up-to-date TIV using BB's Video Games Value Estimator.

Check which BB stores do trade-ins here.
In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

:bomb: The values in the Lists do not match the values in the Estimator. What's up with that?
I don't know. It seems the Lists are usually updated on Sundays, and the TIVs are adjusted to reflect the List in a few days. But as trades are made, the TIVs may change and the Lists are not updated frequently. Again, check the Estimator for latest TIV.

The promo says "Trade 2..." or "Trade 3..." but I only want to trade 1 game, will I still get $x amount?
You will get whatever TIV is offered according to the Estimator for each game. The promo is titled "Trade 2" etc to make the giftcards sound more lucrative.

The 2 games I want to trade are worth more than $60 combined according to the Estimator. Does that mean I will only get $60 for the 2 games?
No. You will get whatever TIV is offered according to the Estimator for each game. For example, if your total according to the Estimator is $70, you will get a $70 giftcard.

:bomb: If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as you ship it before the "Ship by" date "Your item(s) must be received within 14 days to get the quoted value" (as of 5/2), and your games are received in the condition you declared.

How long do I have after I lock in a trade online before I have to ship it?
30 days. Has been recently changed to "Your item(s) must be received within 14 days to get the quoted value".

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
According to BB: "We will not accept more than 3 games of the same title and platform from a customer (or address) in a year. Please do not submit more than the limit as excess submissions WILL NOT BE RETURNED." Example, you can trade 3 copies of Portal 2 for PS3 and 3 copies of Portal 2 for x360 without problems. Some people have been banned from trade-ins at BB due to the violation of this policy. If you plan on trading more than 3 copies of a game per platform by doing it through various stores, you do so at your own risk and discretion.

:bomb: Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
BB used to be strict about complete copies, but this has changed, and ppl are trading games in store without manuals or cover sleeve for full TIV. If you trade online it's sometimes YMMV. I would advise you to send in complete games (case, disc, manual) since some ppl are reporting only getting 50% of the locked TIV.

I see people talking about getting Amazon giftcards by trading at Best Buy. How are they doing that?
Some Best Buys sell Kindle giftcards which can be used on Amazon.com like regular Amazon giftcards. You will not get the Kindle card with your trade, but you can buy them with your BB giftcard.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
According to BB's own FAQ:
Q: Is trade-in limited to items I bought at Best Buy?
A: No.

I don't know why this happens, but apparently some stores do not have their system setup to take non-BB purchased items at this time. Check the link above regarding stores that do video games trade-ins first.
Really serious. Dont know if it is national or local, but Im thinking local since they had a note from a detective to call if I came in, and they routed the call to dispatch since he was off today.

I only had about twelve games, and that only included two DKC returns and 2 AC Brotherhood. The rest were single copies of a few games. Ive never traded more than 3 of the same in a transaction.
National, I'm in SoCal/OC and they have a policy of if you trade more than 3 of the same the PD will call you.
Hasn't happened to me, but it's crazy hearing about it.
Did you trade in hundreds of games or something?
No I dont think the "too many games" thing was anything in the system, just what some blue shirt said. Im sure I have traded in excess of a hundred games though; at least 40 of those were ps2 games from a yard sale. I didnt participate in the b2g2 gamestop ps2 flip since I deemed it would be more trouble than it was worth. Im sure it was just some high trade activity redflag and some employee called a detective to investigate and no one took the time to call me and ask.

Dude, this is a crazy. I am glad you just pulled off.

Then I'm glad I've always kept track of how many copies of each game I've dumped on BB.;)

I can understand why they'd red flag you for such activity, but in the case of the $.99 PS2 games, who the fuck(besides a flipper) is gonna go through the hassle of trading in so many dupes?

I plan on stopping by Best Buy tomorrow to get the new gamer's club thing taken care of, and sometimes this week I'll for sure be doing a trade in of whatever I can play before Friday (drops tend to come on Saturday and Sunday so just trying to cover my ass). Perhaps even one more B2G2 PS2 game swap (considering I only traded in about 30 over two visits anyway). That 60% bonus is just too good to pass up. Hmm, after reading the last few post... maybe not... lol

I've actually got a legit reason to cancel my Batman Arkham City pre-order, well two of them. One, I won the pre-order in a contest here on CAG so I don't need it, and two, the store I pre-ordered from really pissed me off the other day so I refuse to give them even $5 of my money from here on out.

I think you ran into a blue shirt somewhere in that store that decided to go all 'junior detective' on you. Hopefully the cop at least gave him one of the toy badges that kids get, so he could feel big.
Went in today to do the Gamers club unlocked coupon and got the police called on me for trading in so many games (something in their system, not too many games at one time).
Just have a question about the Gamer Club unlocked. Is it starting only from 9/12/2011? I got a letter saying it's unlocked on 9/12/2011. Today is only 9/11. Can u unlock it today?

This is most likely the case, deciding to simply flag anyone with lots of trade activity (and going so far as to involve the police) as a company policy is a good way to turn good customers into past customers. Especially when no rules of the program seem to be broken, there is just a lot of activity.

It may not hurt to mention your experience on the Best Buy customer service forums, phrase as a sort of "Am I going to have to be questioned by the police every couple of months for actively using your trade in program?" and odds are it won't happen again.

Are you just..? wow. seriously?

You got a letter saying it starts tomorrow. With a coupon saying you can redeem it tomorrow, and you think that means you can get it today?

WHAT THE fuck.

EDIT:
Also i'd want the cop thing to happen too me.
Mainly because i can prove i owned them all and they wouldn't hassle me in the future.

I can't believe that the police even wasted their time to get involved in something like that. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? Was there a large theft of video games somewhere in your area recently, a reason why they would be looking for someone to unload a large amount of games?

Otherwise, it just seems that they were responding to the base-less accusations of a curious employee, with no actual proof of anything illegal going on. Seems to be verging on slandering your character if you ask me, as you were subjected to questioning by police in front of a bunch of strangers, in public, for nothing more than a bunch of unfounded accusations in from an employee (well, not in public, but in a store that any person is free to walk in to, and that is where they would probably have a loophole indemnifying themselves from anything)...the more I think about it, I would probably seriously consider contacting the corporate office in some manner. At the very least, I say there is a good chance that you could come away with some kind of conciliatory gift card as an "I'm sorry for the inconvenience", especially seeing that you're a valued RZ Silver member.

Of course, this is assuming you haven't broken their stated limits over time, ie no more than 3 copies per game per platform traded in total at that store, etc...I know you said you had two copies of a few games, but that is well within their stated and allowed rules.

3/?? limit is up to interpretation.
Some stores say it's 3/year some say it's 3/transaction.

Mine thankfully is a 3/transaction, and everyone seems to think what im doing is pretty cool. I'm also their most frequent person.

i've been over that limit for a LONG time.

Same here. The two associates that I've encountered thought it was cool/interesting how I was trading in all those games. The other day I asked whether it would be fine if I brought in more disc only games to trade and they said it would be more than okay.

Wow! I would be pissed if I'm in your shoes killercrane.
2 of the 11 BB in my state have a 1 per 6 months, and 1 took a copy of their game and compare the artwork to mine, look up and down the discs. Ask why, said other BB had incidents with burn copies. This 1 ended up taking my 3 copies after a GM override. Won't be trading there again though.
Went in today to do the Gamers club unlocked coupon and got the police called on me for trading in so many games (something in their system, not too many games at one time). After advising that I had receipts (these were BBV flips), everyone agreed that it was ridiculous and the BB manager advised that there were no issues with banning or anything. The moral of the story is do not lose your cool in situations like that and probably keep some receipts with you in the car or something.

I do not know if this is local or a national thing tied to the new gamers club unlocked. It may just be an isolated incident. Once they realized I was gonna return a boatload of preorders and I have spent 4k plus at BB this year they were pretty understanding.
My uncle had something similar happen to him, and he came out with a $500 gift card, so I'd definitely contact corporate best buy.

Here's how it goes down.

1)Receives $500GC from BB
2)Spends it all on Kindle Cards.

Yeah i'll be keeping my reciepts with me whenever i go into best buy from now on. Don't want the hassle of junior detective Best Buy managers.

Although the customer service "sorry we fucked up" gift card for being harassed by law enforcement because of best buy would be sweet.

nice, it looks like money laundering :D

I just went through amazon and picked everything im gonna preorder up too december 31st.

Roughly $800 and there are still about 5 games missing off the list.
Not too mention im building a computer that's another oh $600-$1100
depending what parts i pick.

#firstworldproblems

Man I don't know about you guys but getting humiliated in a BB store by cop questioning you is definitely not worth $500. I think I'm done trading stuff in to BB until atleast the end of the year.

can I sign up for the magazine online today and then get extra 10% trade-in tomorrow in store? I'm gonna trade in Madden for extra 50% for pre-ordering Gears but extra 60% is even better. If not I hope getting the magazine and paid membership is a quick process or at least the same as GS.

edit: damn tiv for Madden 12 (360 and PS3) dropped to $28 from $30...

well you encounter the problem of not getting the magazine for 6-8 weeks which would probably contain the membership letter thing that states yours is free.

Why wouldn't you just go into tomorrow sign up for it and be done?

I am seriously impressed at the prices I got today.

$32- Gran Turismo 5
$28- Shadows of the Damned PS3

Paid off Saints Row 3 for me. Although the cashieer this time was a fucking idiot. The last two people who I traded in stuff was like hey we can put all your credit onto a preorder. This guy was like no I can't do that, only $5. So I have a giftcard for the balance which will be used to pay it off when it comes in.

So that makes Skyrim (PC), Zelda and Saints Row 3 for me so far.

Unfortunately PC games are not part of the 5/$100 promotion.

Humiliated? The $500 is the equivalent of a settlement before going to a court. Pretty sure you can sue for defamation of character if it hurts your feelings that much. You'd lose but hey. IANAL. (I am not a lawyer)

They were hassling me the other day. I was dumb and spent a ton of money on amazon kindle cards, and one of the card wasn't activated. so i went and told them and they made a huge deal like i stole it and im like dude, i wouldnt walk back in here if i stole it trying to get my $50 i spent on it. they tried to call amazon and etc, eventually they just took petty cash out and bought me another card, but it was messed up that i was getting hassled even tho im a paying customer and they made the mistake.
wow, that cop thing is crazy. my dad's a cop and i would love it if they sent a cop in to talk to me. i have reciepts of everything and would love to make fools of them and hopefully quit any hassle in the future. like someone said earlier, bestbuy is doing great on deals etc but the customer service is gonna turn good heavy gamer customers into past customers.

I think the fact that he was inside a store (private property) and that he possibly went past their stated limits would be enough for them to push aside any kind of lawsuit. I would just contact CS and see what a well-stated letter will get for you. I really do think you could probably come away with a pretty significant GC. It is potentially pretty embarrassing and damaging for someone to have to go through something like that in a crowded BB store, and after all, he may have surpassed some kind of store limit they have for trading, but he definitely didn't do anything illegal.

Traded Killzone 3 that I bought yesterday with Resistance 3... paid $21.40, received $30 (after Gow3 pre-order). Beat the game on recruit level and got 60% of trophies.

Also, traded in 32 PS2 sports games.

Yeah I decided I'm getting Gears from BB because of the deal. I scrounged up some old 360 and Wii games from my basement that will get me almost 75 bucks after the 50% bonus. Now to decide if I want the standard or LE version.

cheapfrag, i did the same thing. didnt get the gow bump, but got 28 for the $20 kz3 i bought with resistance 3. knocked it down a bit, not as good as a pm but oh well.

Just got back from BB with over $100 traded in but didn't realize I could buy a amazon gift card. I've heard people talk about kindle cards but I thought it was something to do with the actual kindle reader. Dohh!

Someone stated yesterday that they had trouble purchasing pre paid visa cards at BB, or something had come down from corporate to no longer carry the cards. Was this an isolated incident or is this a nationwide thing ? Anyone have info this?

Yeah, they're sold by the eBooks and whatnot, and I'd assume most customers (and employees) assume they're just for books. But, if you read the back, you'll see they work on "millions of other products" on Amazon.com. I can vouch and say I applied a $50 Kindle card to my Amazon account the other day and purchased Deus Ex.

Someone said that they're store didn't have any, and that an employee said that corporate is no longer going to be sending them to stores. That employee could have been just blowing smoke out of his ass, so we can't be really sure. That said, if you have the credit and your store has the Visa cards, it'd be best to buy them up now "just in case."

I bought a pre-paid visa a week ago. They had a bunch of them.
So I'll be heading over there today to buy 2x $200 visa and $100 kindle GCs

Have you bought them before so you know where they should be and what they look like? The packaging is slightly different from normal gift cards.

Just traded in Black Ops, Killzone 3 and NBA 2K11 for $77. Pretty satisfied. If anyone still has 2K11, I suggest trading it in soon and getting your money's worth for it before they release 2K12 next month.

Of course it is humiliation. It's not like I'm alone in a BB store. What if some friends/relatives are around? Besides he said he was surrounded by a ton of blue shirts too. I mean look if you've been questioned by cops pretty regularly then it may not be a big deal to you but it is a big deal for me. I mean I'm all for good deals and stuff but hoping that cops question me in a crowded BB store so that I get a $500 GC after complaining to BB corporate is pretty fucked up.

Crowded. That's where im pretty sure you wrong.
No I'm not questioned by cops regularly.
You're taking this to a whole other level.
Oh no, the people working at best buy saw the cops ask me a question.
So fucking what.

Are you guilty? No.
Stop acting like you are.
I don't freak out if a cop asks me a question.
Nor do I start crying and turning red of embarrassment.
I answer the questions because i haven't committed a crime.
Don't be a fucking drama queen.

hmm, the last few pages have been an interesting read. No more Vanilla cards, Limit on returning items was news to me, and thats a real problem if it includes preorder tickets. I also live in the OC, so I'm really curious about the PD. I never trade in Costa Mesa, because I think the store is crap, and I have a suspicion, thats were the trouble most likely occurs, but like most of you I will upgrade my trade account on Monday, and probably flip a game or two. Do we know for sure that they can stop you returning items ?

Stop getting at petty stuff like BB not being crowded and whether I'm guilty or not. Dude whether that crazy head of yours gets it or not it is an embarrassing situation and one that me and a majority of people would love to avoid. You on the other hand are looking for cops to question you so that you get a $500 GC after bitching to BB corporate. That is completely fucked up behavior. Am I exaggerating? Of course. This isn't your regular BB manager talking to you. BB corporate obviously suspects you of theft or wrongdoing. The fact they put a note in the system and alerted the cops should be a matter of concern but you are brushing it off like a regular experience at your grocery store.
