BEST BUY'S VIDEO GAMES TRADE-IN PAGE

Check most up-to-date TIV using BB's Video Games Value Estimator.

Check which BB stores do trade-ins here.
In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

:bomb: The values in the Lists do not match the values in the Estimator. What's up with that?
I don't know. It seems the Lists are usually updated on Sundays, and the TIVs are adjusted to reflect the List in a few days. But as trades are made, the TIVs may change and the Lists are not updated frequently. Again, check the Estimator for latest TIV.

The promo says "Trade 2..." or "Trade 3..." but I only want to trade 1 game, will I still get $x amount?
You will get whatever TIV is offered according to the Estimator for each game. The promo is titled "Trade 2" etc to make the giftcards sound more lucrative.

The 2 games I want to trade are worth more than $60 combined according to the Estimator. Does that mean I will only get $60 for the 2 games?
No. You will get whatever TIV is offered according to the Estimator for each game. For example, if your total according to the Estimator is $70, you will get a $70 giftcard.

:bomb: If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as you ship it before the "Ship by" date "Your item(s) must be received within 14 days to get the quoted value" (as of 5/2), and your games are received in the condition you declared.

How long do I have after I lock in a trade online before I have to ship it?
30 days. Has been recently changed to "Your item(s) must be received within 14 days to get the quoted value".

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
According to BB: "We will not accept more than 3 games of the same title and platform from a customer (or address) in a year. Please do not submit more than the limit as excess submissions WILL NOT BE RETURNED." Example, you can trade 3 copies of Portal 2 for PS3 and 3 copies of Portal 2 for x360 without problems. Some people have been banned from trade-ins at BB due to the violation of this policy. If you plan on trading more than 3 copies of a game per platform by doing it through various stores, you do so at your own risk and discretion.

:bomb: Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
BB used to be strict about complete copies, but this has changed, and ppl are trading games in store without manuals or cover sleeve for full TIV. If you trade online it's sometimes YMMV. I would advise you to send in complete games (case, disc, manual) since some ppl are reporting only getting 50% of the locked TIV.

I see people talking about getting Amazon giftcards by trading at Best Buy. How are they doing that?
Some Best Buys sell Kindle giftcards which can be used on Amazon.com like regular Amazon giftcards. You will not get the Kindle card with your trade, but you can buy them with your BB giftcard.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
According to BB's own FAQ:
Q: Is trade-in limited to items I bought at Best Buy?
A: No.

I don't know why this happens, but apparently some stores do not have their system setup to take non-BB purchased items at this time. Check the link above regarding stores that do video games trade-ins first.

I've got a source who works with gamestop corporate who's told me they've been getting bestbuy's memos about the Used game program, and most of the stuff is basically insulting gamestop.

Anyway's GS is gonna be upgrading there values by a lot. Shifting into "Kill bestbuy" mode.
we'll see how bestbuy reacts.
Awesome sauce. Competition is always best for us, the consumer.
Insulting GS? GS is insulting me with their stupid trade in value system, and giving us crap worth for what we trade them for :D

If GS really want to step up it's game, then they better implement most of what BB is offering. First, include COUPONS inside the magazines. Idk about you guys, but the GS magazine has no value to me.

Second, show the stupid game value online!!!! The last thing I'd want to do is drive all the way out to GS where a massive BO is trap inside the store only to find out the games I'm trading in are worth 50 cents, etc.

I don't know how they can possibly compete with the prepaid visa, or kindle gift card. Those are the main reason I love flipping games at BB. I've been saving mine to buy a new TV. What do you guys do with your credit besides buying upcoming games?
GS used to have coupons in their email, and in their mags, but that was a long time ago. If you want to know GS trade in values there is the GS TIV thread that is updated by people who go in (or call in) for trades. The more people who report values the more up to date the list is.

Thanks to BB, lots of people have been able to transfer GS to BB to AMZ to ?? and repeat at increased values. If GS brings their A game we could see some interesting and profitable opportunities.

Even if the BB memos insult GS, it doesn't mean any thing really. They probably know BB is lowering its trade in values too. What do you do? Up your values a little bit to swing some trades your way? Doesn't quite sound like GS's style. However I think they could maybe do that on some popular games. And do stuff like the bonus 50% near Best Buys. However I would love to see GS compete more, everyone benefits if they do.

The one GS manager I'm friends with around here made a comment something to the effect of 'that explains the memos we received about raising trade values'. I'm paraphrasing, but yeah, it does seem to be a possibility that GS will actually be stepping up their game to try and actively compete with BB's trade program.
What do you guys do with your credit besides buying upcoming games?
I've used some of my Amazon credit I bought with BB credit to buy a used-like new PS3 from Amazon's Warehouse Deals site, a ton of games I wanted to play(or at least try out) and other various items that I've been wanting.

The only thing GS would have for me to convert my credit into is games to trade to BB to convert to AMZ credit.:booty: Either that or buying consoles/games new and sealed and selling those on Craigslist to convert into cash.

By the way, I noticed that there was a 'check' value in the system for each of the games I traded into BB the other day on their in store trade kiosk.

So they may be able to do trades that allow a check to be mailed to you for those values, just like the online trade estimator once allowed. Not sure if any promos would apply to those check values, but I sincerely doubt it.

i use my credit on everything. mainly i tell my wife diapers and wipes tho ;) amazon credit makes flipping super lucrative and able to buy anything practically. i just need petty cash for day to day and bills/groceries, but all my products come from amazon delivered to my door pretty much.
my grrl found that myhabit.com site to, so ugh, they take amazon credit so that's good for her i guess. now she just wants me to flip more = more spending money for her.

They keep sending me emails for that myhabit site and I keep deleting them. Only site besides Amazon proper(and Warehouse Deals) that I'd consider buying anything from is Woot.com, which Amazon owns now.;)

neat stories but is it wise to flaunt the unintended use over and over?
what good comes from this? but a potential change in rules.

frickin amazing:roll:

*sigh* I keep on hearing everyone saying they buy Amazon gift cards with their BB credit. Well, I live in IL so that's not an option for me. But on the other hand, I've been buying a lot of stuff from BB which frequently has better prices than Amazon. The BB blu-ray sales are much better than Amazon's lately. I've been sitting on $600 in Amazon credit for awhile now.

After what I went through at Best Buy getting this promo, I doubt I will be buying anything there again, I was ready to kill the lame ass manager, when he tried to screw me out of the promo because he did not know about nor care. I HATE BEST BUY, after picking up my GEARS 3 I'm done, I would rather get less value for trades and at least be treated like a human at Gamestop. Best Buy is the absolute worst store I have ever dealt with in my life.
Best Buy is the absolute worst store I have ever dealt with in my life.
Store.
So you're saying the enitire chain is shitty and treats you like less than a human, or are you basing that off of what happened to you at THAT store?
Just don't go there.
Even though there's a separate thread for 5 for $100, but hey what do I know.

Thats exactly what I'm saying, if it was just this one time or this one store. Hey anyone can have a bad day, but no its the entire history of bad treatment at many stores, over many years. I hope Best Buy goes away, even though I know it won't it's a wish.

You never know...their most recent financial report was bad. It's suspicious to me when one of your positives is a supposed increase in the share of tablet sales. Can anyone say touchpad? These post promo tivs aren't helping either. So much more labor is involved with each game taken in, as compared to GS. The time lost between sending games to be refurbed/process and getting them into stores only risks increased depreciation during that time. I don't see how they can win...We'll see I guess.

p.s. I LOVE these tivs+promos - the cool guy helping me whipped out his phone to take a picture of my trade total today lol

How many games and how much you got?

Another BB only except 1 copy, last week trade 3x no problem. This make it 3 BB with this policy for me. This would really suck donkey ass if all the other BB adopt the same policy.

I just visa'd out the rest of my BB credit today after cancelling my preorders, mainly cuz I live in an area with a Microsoft store and plan to attend their midnight event. Also, i didn't want to rely too much on being able to price match later on :/ hope all your guys' transactions work out though!

BB is a great converter store though :D

Brother asked me this, so i figured I'd ask here.

Do you need to show ID to trade games in and do you need to show ID to preorder Gears 3? I'm sure you do to buy it, but wasn't sure about just preordering

Yes and no.
Yes and no.
Thanks for the reply. One last question. Do they scan it or anything or just look to see you're over 18? My brother has let his ID expire lol. I'd like to avoid going and doing this all for him.

YMMV. most BB people prolly dont care, but I can see someone may deny your bro because of the expired license. Tell him to handle it himself

I agree with most of what you're saying except the value of Game Informer. I think it's the best video game magazine on the market. There are those people that...you know...get magazines to read them, too. I would subscribe to Game Informer for $15 a year even if PUR didn't come with it.

Got the new guy in the gaming section last night when I went to do the trade in. I honestly kind of walked him through the process but he forgot to add the GCU 10% so we ended up having to re-do the whole trade in. Best part, he's trying to run the gift card like it has a magnetic strip and after a couple of tries I point out to him that he has to use the scanner and scan the UPC. He laughed and said he was glad that his I was his first trade in since I helped him do it.

After all that, we actually forgot to pre-order GOW3. lol Happy with my $200 credit though, last of the Blockbuster flips.

I couldn't believe it when they told me they send the games to a warehouse and they're dispersed through there. I know not everyone is a CAG, but people buying used games I imagine would be price-checking with at least Gamestop, another brick and mortar store. Best Buy's used prices are awful, I think I bought 1 used game there when they had the 50% off coupon, and that was it.

Like you said, risking depreciation of a game over even a week or two is crazy. They're still half-assing this whole thing. You can't dip your feet into used game sales, you need to just jump in the pool. They should have just as much space for used games as they do for new games, or at least half the space...not half a shelf. And they need to lower their prices and keep up on market changes in prices daily.

I like their trade-in values when they have the bumps just like everyone else. And I've done a bit of flipping to convert Gamestop credit to BB credit, but it baffles me how they can still be so behind the curve on this...especially competing on trades with Gamestop, Amazon, eBay, Toys R Us, etc...
As I said the other day, I would not be surprised at all if they had some kind of representative monitoring this thread.

If they have a Top 20 searched, I guess we'll just have to look up the value of Madden '06 five times for every one time we look up the value of an actual flip...throw 'em off the scent!
If they did, a lot of members might have been banned by now. If they do, I'm sure the loopholes like the AMZ GC's would be closed up by now too. If anything it might be SD that they track. At some point somebody will notice this place. Out of that fear alone, I'm maintaining my BB trade-in spreadsheet to make sure I'm under the trade-in limit. Unlike GS, you can't create another trade-in account once your banned since they document it by driver's license.

It's a big corporation. It takes 3 months to do anything.
Cases are NOT required, right? I have a few PS2 games without the cases.
Its ymmv. U could try and see what they say. I think the BB website hs a list of stores that take games without receipt, but not sure if the same store would taksw disc only or not. Try to call one of those listed stores.
Seriously?
Some people don't frequent this thread. I wasn't even aware that there was a FAQ in the main post of this thread until you were a jackass with your reply.

Thats why i wasnt hard on u. There are so many threads here and your question wasnt dumb, u just didnt know.

Most BB stores want the case, but the stores listed on the BB webite had no problem taking my games disc only. Its YMMV and u should call the store first to confirm.

Don't bother calling the store. My BB tells you that you get 50% less credit if you trade in games without the case, but when you actually go trade them in, you get full value. You can't trust the Best Buy Customer Service.

I finished Resistance 3 this morning, so I went ahead and traded it in. Couldn't pass up getting $42 for it after Gears pre-order bonus ($28 base).

So let's say that I make a trade for the 50% bonus plus 10% gamer club member and they give me the 10% on the spot.

How quickly can I cancel my gears of war pre-order?
Can I just walk into best buy the next day and cancel my pre-order?

I would go to a different clerk of course so they don't get suspicious.

You can even cancel same day, or at a different BB.

Okay that is exactly what I want to know too, if I do the 40% preorder thing can I get that bonus for a trade in and then cancel my preorder and get that $5 in credit back?

Yes but if you're going to just return the pre order, do it with Gears so you get the extra 50%
Okay one more dumb question, I see Trance says you can cancel the preorder at a different BB is that 100% certain?
None of the BB around here will let you. It may be a YMMV thing though.

I did the same thing with Deus Ex on Thursday. Got $36 and promptly canceled my pre-order.

A much easier way to cancel your preorder is to just preorder GoW 3 online. Bring your email receipt whenever you trade in and then cancel it online yourself. No return hassle.

Just lame rolling charge.

Food for thought.

KNowing members here should really rethink answering the same frickin lazy members questions over and over, highlighting aspects available now.
Your just setting up a change in policies to happen sooner than later.

Every single question in the last few days has been asked repeatedly and was already available info in the op ...

and keep up the bragging posts...they are just brilliant  for the same reasons.

yeah but it sure beats waiting in line doing a return. plus anybody that's $60 away from maxing out their cc should worry about more pressing things.

this. i'm at a point where i hate having to keep up with this thread looking for anythign useful only to waste the time reading an annoying question that's been asked 1,000 times over. seriously, how many members need to ask "can I cancel my preorder after I get my TIV bonus?"

maybe we shouldn't bother answering these questions and let them figure it out themselves.

Agreed. It's also fantastic how anyone, like myself, says "Search the thread" or "First page FAQ use it"

Is suddenly an asshole. Because they're too lazy to use these features.

yep. also finished resistance 3 with all but archivist(all collectibles) and brutal (superhard difficulty) fun game. 44.80 tiv after 60% bump. woot.
also yeah, let's keep the list of flipping games to ourselves or private messages or private groups until the tiv drops and we can all complain :)
im not that paranoid, but bestbuy has been on the up n up lately and it wouldnt take much for them to monitor a thread here...
im just hoping my games don't drop in tiv for the next few days...damn you duke/madden11/etc!
A much easier way to cancel your preorder is to just preorder GoW 3 online. Bring your email receipt whenever you trade in and then cancel it online yourself. No return hassle.
Some stores will make you preorder right then and there. You won't get the 50% bonus if you have a previous preorder.

I didn't know about the +10% if you become the new member for $15 and get the mag sub, so went in today to do the Gears 3 50% and ended up getting another 10% for doing that. Nearly paid off the subscription entirely. So 60% on my trade ins today. Wish I would have known about the 50% earlier, I've traded in about 8 games since last Saturday, I'm sure I could have gotten a pretty penny in return with the extra 20%.

It is really unlikely they are monitoring threads. Its so much easier to just look at your own data and spot the real problems. The most likeliest scenario is that they have software in place that helps identify the problems. I have data analysts at my workplace doing similar things on a daily basis. They wouldn't waste time in forum threads looking for these kind of issues.

If there is something wrong with the system then it probably won't be acted on immediately...like PS2 flips or bans. People have to get together and review these kind of things.

Good flips are taken care of automatically.
Broken flips (ps2 games) will need to be taken care of manually.
