BEST BUY'S VIDEO GAMES TRADE-IN PAGE

Check most up-to-date TIV using BB's Video Games Value Estimator.

Check which BB stores do trade-ins here.
In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

:bomb: The values in the Lists do not match the values in the Estimator. What's up with that?
I don't know. It seems the Lists are usually updated on Sundays, and the TIVs are adjusted to reflect the List in a few days. But as trades are made, the TIVs may change and the Lists are not updated frequently. Again, check the Estimator for latest TIV.

The promo says "Trade 2..." or "Trade 3..." but I only want to trade 1 game, will I still get $x amount?
You will get whatever TIV is offered according to the Estimator for each game. The promo is titled "Trade 2" etc to make the giftcards sound more lucrative.

The 2 games I want to trade are worth more than $60 combined according to the Estimator. Does that mean I will only get $60 for the 2 games?
No. You will get whatever TIV is offered according to the Estimator for each game. For example, if your total according to the Estimator is $70, you will get a $70 giftcard.

:bomb: If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as you ship it before the "Ship by" date "Your item(s) must be received within 14 days to get the quoted value" (as of 5/2), and your games are received in the condition you declared.

How long do I have after I lock in a trade online before I have to ship it?
30 days. Has been recently changed to "Your item(s) must be received within 14 days to get the quoted value".

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
According to BB: "We will not accept more than 3 games of the same title and platform from a customer (or address) in a year. Please do not submit more than the limit as excess submissions WILL NOT BE RETURNED." Example, you can trade 3 copies of Portal 2 for PS3 and 3 copies of Portal 2 for x360 without problems. Some people have been banned from trade-ins at BB due to the violation of this policy. If you plan on trading more than 3 copies of a game per platform by doing it through various stores, you do so at your own risk and discretion.

:bomb: Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
BB used to be strict about complete copies, but this has changed, and ppl are trading games in store without manuals or cover sleeve for full TIV. If you trade online it's sometimes YMMV. I would advise you to send in complete games (case, disc, manual) since some ppl are reporting only getting 50% of the locked TIV.

I see people talking about getting Amazon giftcards by trading at Best Buy. How are they doing that?
Some Best Buys sell Kindle giftcards which can be used on Amazon.com like regular Amazon giftcards. You will not get the Kindle card with your trade, but you can buy them with your BB giftcard.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
According to BB's own FAQ:
Q: Is trade-in limited to items I bought at Best Buy?
A: No.

I don't know why this happens, but apparently some stores do not have their system setup to take non-BB purchased items at this time. Check the link above regarding stores that do video games trade-ins first.
Gonna take a stack of games to trade in tomorrow and hopefully use that credit to pick up Ico/SoTC + GoW; Origins. If nothing drops, I should be getting around $140.. Probably use the rest to get some of those prepaid Visa and head over to Target for the B1G1. Hopefully I don't encounter any problems :x

See I never can find these in my BestBuy. Where are they usually located? The Amazon cards in the PCHO I found those.

You know, I've actually never seen them myself. I just remember reading on here about people getting them haha. Then again I hardly step foot in Best Buy. Hopefully I can find em..

Mine are located in the same area where the kindle (behind the PC's and tablets) is on a shelf underneath the display models. The kindle gift cards are also sometimes hanging on the gift card displays/endcaps near the tablets.

Edit: nevermind I can't read apparently

They are kinda hard to spot. Mine are thrown in with the other BB cards. The visa ones says "it's your call" or "for your birthday".

The Visa cards at my store are near the CS / Checkout area next to all the other BB GCs.
They're in a envelope thats says "It's Your Call" / "For Your Birthday" / "Just for You". I think all of them are blue except the birthday one is yellow (the packaging).

The pre-paid Visas are usually up on a rack up by the registers with a bunch of different themed Best Buy gift cards(Happy Birthday, etc).

Anyone remember when BB used to include a coupon with the one 'gamer' gift card? I only got to use 1-2 of those before they stopped putting them in the package, but I think it was like $5 off any gaming purchase or something.

Got the Rage promo today for my trade ins. Guy behind the counter didn't even take the deposit on the game, just straight up gave me the 50% extra.

Grabbed a bunch of Amazon gift cards and checked out. The girl behind the counter sees me at the store a lot and just says, "You sure like to read, huh?"

If only they knew.

Just scored Crysis 2, black ops, and MK 9 for $35. Will bring them in tonight with 36 of my ps2 games for ICO (PM Fry's) and God of War origins (hopefully $20 off combo) + Pre-order Rage (5/5). :D My final flip at BB for this deal.
I'll ask this again: does anyone know if you can preorder PC games with their kiosk? Will the preorder bonus work with a PC preorder?
Yes and yes. Done it tons of times.

Only thing currently where PC games will not work is the Preorder 5/$100 cert deal.
I'll ask this again: does anyone know if you can preorder PC games with their kiosk? Will the preorder bonus work with a PC preorder?
Yes, you can pre-order games. I have pre-ordered Batman before and they gave me the extra discount. As far as DLC goes. It will tell you on the kiosk if it's included.

Yes, $5.95 which it states on the actual packaging (albeit small) but the first thing you see is FREE on the price tag.

For those that don't know about the Visa cards:

$5.95 each to activate
Limited to $200.00
Can't be used until 30 minutes after activation (although I have used sooner)
Can be (or sometimes MUST be) registered online with name, address, etc so that you can use them for online purchases

Won't know until the new ad drops. YMMV but in most cases probably not. The whole point of the trade-in/preorder is an incentive to pre-order but also get more money in your pocket. If you trade-in 5-6 times and use the same pre-order kind of defeats the purpose.

Never hurts to ask though. :D

I bought Driver (coupon working fine now as others have said) and a $200 Visa on the same receipt and used $30 in RZ certs and the rest in gift cards to pay for it all - fast and painless... So I guess as long as you don't get clerks going all junior detective on you there aren't any problems buying the visa cards with trade-in credit.

I didn't realize how hosed I was getting on the RZ and silver status purchases until I looked at my RZ account a few days ago and nothing has been getting me points (or even credit towards my silver status) for over a month!

It's not beeping at them telling them they can't use a gift card to purchase pre-paid cards? I thought that was the original problem and people had to know to hit a different key. If any thing special has to be done, it's not going to happen at my store.

Only reason I want to get one is so I can get points on purchases and the ocassional sale at Gamefly and BBV. Might try it tomorrow. I did a $300 trade in this weekend and love to move some of that over to a visa.

Dance Paradise has been at $15 since the day of the gamefly sale that I assume is the reason you were looking. Dance Central was $17 that day, and still is for that matter.

Im not sure you can hit Silver status or earn RZ bonus points from doing a Gift Card to Visa Card transfer. If you are buying Visa cards just for the RZ points then better make sure its worth it. Right now i don't think it is...

It costs $6 to buy a Visa Card. The most you can put on that card is $200 so it is essentially a 3% fee. You earn a $5 RZ certificate at 250 points. 1 RZ point = $1 dollar spent...as an RZ member you are essentially getting 2% back. It doesn't make sense to spend 3% only to get 2% back. If you kept it strictly to games and double points were possible with this method then it could result in a minor positive (im not going to do the math on this :)). Whatever you spend on tax is not included in RZ point calculation.

Final Edit: This is the first time I'm saying this....but tax kills the Gift Card to Visa Card deal. I'm at a 9% tax rate. RZ points are not earned on tax so my cost is actually the 3% visa fee plus 9% tax I spend on a bestbuy purchase.

It is simpler than that - $200 in purchases gets you $4 in RZ (not directly, but that's how the $5 for 250 points works out). So, yeah, it's a loss there. But then don't forget we also get double points on game purchases. So that makes it a little worth it. And then there's the Silver status thing - I assume purchases made with the Visa will count, while ones with gift card credit don't (though I am not 100% sure about that - just seen it mentioned here). Plus I was really close to a $5 cert (about $40 away) so I wanted to be able to spend at least some non-GC credit at Best Buy. Having said that, I did use my Visa just after purchasing it for some stuff at Petsmart. GS credit -> cat food - priceless ;).

Yeah im still trying to figure out the system. I thought it was $250 in purchases gets you a $5 certificate. Its late and my math is off lol
Yeah im still trying to figure out the system. I thought it was $250 in purchases gets you a $5 certificate. Its late and my math is off lol
It is, so you get $4 from the $200 worth of Visa purchases (but $8 if that is all game purchases).

By the way, anyone else having trouble with the RZ site? For the last few days, when I go look at my purchase history, it shows nothing. I mean, I can show 180 days of purchases and nothing. Before, even if they resulted in 0 points (bought with gift cards for example) they at least showed up there. I've had nothing for the last few days.

It is also not showing my Rage preorder as 1 of the 5. I'm not doing that promo anyway so it doesn't matter. But, looking at my receipt, it seems the overly chatty game trade-in guy screwed up and didn't apply my RZ to that preorder :bomb:. He only asked for my phone number number to look up my RZ (like 3 times) and talked about it constantly (about the promo, about the game, etc). I guess he didn't actually apply it.

That's what I was trying to hint at. Regardless, way too many Dance games. But they do provide a nice little flip. I wonder if people who hate flippers hate when shitty games get flipped...:whistle2:k

The good news is that you can go ahead and manually report that Rage pre-order through the RZ site...although that may screw with the 5/100 if you ever decide to do it.

LOL, my RZ site is so screwy so i decided to mess around with it further. Last week I took my most recent receipts and added them to the site even though they already appeared. I'm showing a lot of valid dollar amounts for purchases i made with gift cards. It says my current points are 116. I only had 5 points just before the gamers unlocked thing happened. I didn't even make any cash purchases since I got gamers unlocked on 9/13. I bet my points disappear :applause:

If you do in fact get RZ points for VISA GC purchases, all you need to spend to earn $5.95 back in RZ certs is $148.75, assuming it's all towards video games. I know you can only earn at $5 (250 pts.) increments, but that is not the point. If you plan to continuously practice exchanging BB GCs for VISA GCs and spend the VISA GCs at BB, it is beneficial to you. Of course, the certs cover tax too, so...

If you want to know how much you can spend before tax, take $200/(1+tax %). E.g. if tax is 10%, then $200/1.1 = $181.82. And if you spend that all toward video games, that will net you 363 RZ points, or $5*(363/250) = $7.27 in RZ certs. So, in this ex. a $200 VISA GC will earn you $7.27 in RZ certs. While not great, if you spend a lot at BB, it's probably worth it. And it should help you achieve Silver status sooner/easier.

Werd but i still don't think it makes sense. If i buy a $200 Visa Gift Card I can only earn 182 points due to my tax rate. If double points then i will earn 364 points.

My real cost is 12% ($24) if i'm buying $200 Visa Gift Cards...what will i get back that can match that 12%?

$6 Visa GC Fee
$18 tax on purchases made with my Visa GC (my tax rate)

^^ See, I don't have to worry about that sales tax BS. That sure makes things confusing. It's nice and simple here ;).

And I guess I'll try entering some receipts on there. Like I said, right now it shows no history whatsoever for me for 180 days, a year, whatever I put in. It was showing them a week ago or so.

Sorry, missed this earlier. No, it did not do anything, though at first it wasn't working for him. Then he asked another clerk how to ring it up and she told him and it worked - but this was all before I even applied my gift cards. This was just when he was scanning the Visa card to activate it.

But once that part went through, the payment was no issue - even when using RZ certs and gift cards, which I thought might have caused problems if anything would.

Interesting. I may have to try entering in the order #'s from my BLOPS bundles to see if I can get credited for them since I paid cash.;)

:bomb: Apparently I'm using ONE email address for when I'm buying from BB.com and another one is linked to my RZ account. Unfortunately there's about $300 in purchases on the one I use to buy on BB's site. That's a whole $5 or so in RZ certs I'm missing out on.

Yeah its messed up. I think i know whats wrong in my case. When i got Gamers Unlocked i checked the RZ website to make sure it was added. It said i was an Unlocked member since 12/2010. So i think it retroactively gave me points from purchases all the way back to that date. This bumped me from 5 points up to 116 now.

Its funny because in my RZ site I have a $54 purchase in July and it was giving me 98 points for it. I thought double points didn't go into effect until Gamers Unlocked started on 9/13. I did return that purchase so i have another transaction showing -98 points.
Is there a fee every time you use the Visa GC? Or is it just the $5.99 Activation fee? Thanks.
just the activation fee.

For everyone that is manually entering your receipts on the RZ site, apparently there is a limit to how many times you can do it. Once you hit that mark it will tell you to call RZ CS. CS did not give me a definite answer on what the limit was and whether it was monthly, annually, etc. I don't know if it always works this way, but I got an instant point adjustment instead of having to wait the normal 30 days.

haha, thanx guys for the dance tivs info. i need to start writing this stuff down or i get confused what the tivs were for what. yeah i think i got dance central mixed with dance paradise. peace all and thanx.

Homefront is $12.99 on Amazon's Warehouse Deals, flips for $24 when you trade it towards a pre-order of Rage or NBA 2k12. You only have to put $5 down and you can cancel that pre-order later if you want.

I don't follow your logic that the $18 is a cost associated with the Visa Gift Card. You will pay tax on your purchases whether you use a BB credit or a Visa Gift card.

So doesn't it work out as follows (assuming 9% tax rate and $206 in credit):

Option 1: No Visa exchange: for $206 dollars in BB credit you can buy $189 in games and get no RZ points.
Option 2: exchange BB credit for Visa card: $206 becomes $200 in Visa gift Card due to $6 fee, you can now buy $183.50 in games (before tax). You earn 367 RZ points (assuming double points for games) which translates to $7.34 in credit.

The difference in the value of the games purchased = $5.50 less with option 2 but you earned $7.34 in credit
