Big Daddy Cool's wrestling topic

Say hello to "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash.

Though questionable as a booker, and certainly not the best wrestler these days, Kevin Nash of the 90s was just too sweeeeeeeeeeeet!

Wiki
OWW

I can recall Nash breaking into the WWF as Shawn Michaels silent bodyguard. He was called Big Daddy Cool Diesel, and it wouldn't take too long before he finally stepped in the ring. Diesel then began a Hogan-like reign of domination through the WWF. Within a year he had won the IC Title (beating good friend Scott Hall), the Tag Titles (with good friend Shawn Michaels) and in November of 94, he won the World title, beating Bob Backlund in a mere 8 seconds. A record that still stands to this day as the shortest WWE World Championship match ever.

Nash would hold that belt until November '95, when he dropped it to Bret Hart. Nash remained in the title picture until his WWE departure in May of '96 for WCW.

Nash's time in WCW is well documented. From the most successful angle in wrestling history, teaming with Hall & Hogan to form the NWO, to some of the worst angles in WCW history, such as the "finger poke of doom", booked by Nash himself. During that time Nash held the WCW Tag titles 7 times, and the WCW World Championship on 4 separate occasions.

Nash's return to the WWE, was far less successful. He immediately injured himself, and although he would return to headline a few ppvs with good friend HHH, he never returned to his Diesel form. Today, Nash is in TNA, where he acts primarily as a manager in the X-Division.

So, how will Kevin Nash be remembered when his career is all said and done? A promising career, marred by chronic injuries to his knees, that prevented him from ever having another extended title reign. His notorious backstage politics, and involvement with The Kliq have left many with a lower opinion of Kevin Nash. Still you can't take away how great the NWO angle was, and how dominating Nash was during his first WWE title run as Diesel. His title reign remains the most recent title reign longer than John Cena's current title reign.

I like Nash, I liked Diesel, but good god almighty, I hated the "Big Daddy Cool" moniker. I don't know why, but it came off as corny as all fuck to me (even as a kid).

Anyone else ever noticed that in the Firepro games that include Nash that he's a total monster? Seriously, do an 8 man Battle Royal in Firepro D and include Nash as one of the 8 men in a group of all prowrestlers. If you let the computer sim the whole match I bet you Nash will be one of the last two guys in the match.

Someone at Spike/Human was a huge Nash mark back in the day.

See, I felt that way too. Also see Waltman, Sean: 1-2-3 Kid? X-Pac?

I liked it when he was Six (or whichever variant spelling), though that didn't really help him get over with me, either.

The Angle stuff is goofy. It makes him look like a bad actor and not a good heel, IMO.

The Motor City Machine Guns and Triple X match, when it happens, has the potential to be fucking awesome.

Jesus Christ this show has been horrible so far. Angle being a bastard is funny, but this is not the time to be doing "husband abuses wife and child" storylines.

Is it ever really a good time to run those storylines.

Wait until Marvel complains of a trademark/copyright violation.

Marvel makes TNA's figures - I doubt they'll go after TNA. Good God that was a horrid show, but at least it was full of unintentional comedy.

Yeah TNA wasn't that good tonight. I agree Angle being a dick to his wife and child is not in good taste... Even more so than usual. The Triple X vs Dutt and Lethal match needed a little more time.... say 5 more min. The Triple X vs the Machine Guns match has good potential, but I hate the way the confrontation between the two teams was not mentioned as they went to commercial and not when they came back. At least I can look forward to Matt Hardy on Smackdown tomorrow night.

TNA's plan to have Dustin being "Platinum", who instead of quoting movies like the Oscar-based Goldust, would reference platinum-selling songs, has gone out the window, as an indy wrestler has the "Platinum" name trademarked. Impact tonight had about 18 minutes of wrestling tonight, and sure didn't seem like it given how none of it meant anything, and everything on the show was rushed. They found time to have Roode tar and feather Young but couldn't squeeze in anything for the Steiners, or anything for the compelling Storm-Rhino feud that is one of the few things in the company rooted in reality.

I thought impact! was pretty good, but definitely not as good as it has been the past few weeks.

Andrew "Test" Martin's debut was pretty cool, but I don't like how it felt like... too much of a debut. Like, I was half-expecting him to yell, 'roided out, "THIS IS MY DEBUT!!!!!!!"

I think all unexpected debuts should be handles like Scott Hall's WCW debut. (Not exactly, but similar.)

Not including the main event, I'd wager Raw had right around 18 their damn selves, and they have 2 hours and 5-10 minutes to play with.

Raw has had shows with that little wrestling on it, but this past week's wasn't one of them (it had about 40 minutes). I don't usually pay attention to how much time is spent with matches on a show as long as what was presented was either good or felt satisfactory, but that wasn't the case with Impact tonight. The wrestling was completely secondary to the storylines, which isn't a good thing for a company that says "WE ARE WRESTLING" and has featured long, eventful matches on a regular basis on TV before.

You've been shitting on TNA a lot lately.

The past few weeks have been sole wrestling -- one of those nights being one, entire match.

They only have one hour to work with - which is difficult in developing stories and spreading time for them - and they tape four impacts! in one night, so you have to take those things into consideration.

Lets loose, to say the least. The following recap of The Iron Sheik on Howard Stern this morning comes from Mark's Friggin' Website and is heavily edited from the original. It's safe to say, this recap makes Sheik seem somewhat normal. The WWE Hall of Famer also participated in a game of Anal Ring Toss, which can't be posted on this particular site because its too explicit. But business as usual, The Iron Sheik was just up to his usual stuff. Anyway, here's the recap:

- The Iron Sheik Visits. 08/02/07. 8:25am
Howard came back a short time later and said that it was time to bring in the Iron Sheik whose clips they have been listening to quite a bit lately. He said that Sheik has been waiting for over an hour out in the green room. He then had the guys bring in The Iron Sheik. Sheik came in and said it was a pleasure to be there today. He thanked Howard for inviting him in. Howard had him put on his headphones so he could hear what was going on and then told him how his grandfather worshiped the Iron Sheik. He said he'd be so proud of him if he knew he got to meet him. Howard said that this is two legends meeting this morning. Sheik told Howard about this medal he brought in with him. He wanted him to read it so Howard read it and it was something from 1971. He said that he came over to this country back then after being the Shah of Iran's body guard.

Howard asked Sheik who discovered him here in the States. He said it was Vince McMahon. Howard said he thinks that Vince McMahon has forgotten about Sheik and wondered if he's still on the payroll. Sheik told him that's a great question. He then started getting worked up and telling Howard that he sold out shows in Pontiac, Michigan and things like that. Then Howard asked him about Hulk Hogan and why he's still involved with wrestling. Sheik said he should be there right along with Hulk. He said that Hulk was a weight lifter and he told people not to use drugs so he wondered what the heck he was doing. Sheik was all over the place talking about the wrestling stuff and calling people homosexuals. He said that Hulk is a one, to him. He said that someone asked him to break Hulk's legs one time but he didn't do it because he's twice the man that he is. He said that he's not jealous of Hulk's money but he does get mad when he thinks back to the days when he was acting like a phony. He said that hulk told him he ''owed him one'' one time but never did anything for him. Howard was trying to get Sheik all worked up asking him why he's not part of the wrestling scene now. He used to be huge in the wrestling scene and now he's been forgotten. Sheik said that's true and went off on Hulk again. He said that he's a gold digger. He explained how he had left the WWE and went to other wrestling leagues.

Howard told Sheik that they found this new guy Iron Sheik Jr. (Artie) so he put him on the mic and let Artie try to get Sheik worked up. Artie did his impression of Sheik and went off on him as if he were the real Sheik. Sheik started to go off on him like battling Sheiks. Artie was talking over him and not letting him get a word in. Howard told Sheik that Sheik Jr. was getting $2 million from Vince McMahon to do his thing. Sheik told Artie to come in and show himself if he's man enough. He told him he was going to break his back to make him humble. Sheik told Sheik Jr. that talk is cheap and he should show himself. Howard had to get rid of Artie to calm everyone down. Sheik was out of breath from yelling. He said he was all excited over that and that's why he was all out of breath. Howard told Sheik that Sheik Jr. had been signed on for $2 million and that was just wrong. Sheik asked for a cold beer and said that the guy got him all excited and if he was there, he'd put him in the camel clutch. Howard told Sheik that he had Ultimate Warrior live via satellite for him. It was actually Richard Christy doing an impression of Ultimate Warrior. He told Sheik that he'd beat his butt. That got Sheik all worked up again and he was telling Warrior that he was a homosexual for shaving his chest. He was ready to wrestle the guy but Howard got rid of him and said ''screw that guy'' and moved on to the next guy. Howard said they had Randy ''Macho Man'' Savage live via satellite as well. Sheik went off on him before they even put him up. Sheik called him a cheap, SOB.. Sal was playing the part of Randy and called Sheik some names and told him he was ready to wrestle him. Sheik told him he was a SOB a few times and yelled at him for a couple of minutes. Sal was throwing out as many racist comments as he could. Howard let ''Randy'' go and talked to Sheik about what a great performer he is. Sheik told him he's right and he should have been treated that way. He's broke now though. Howard asked him about Andre the Giant. Sheik said he was a piece of crap too. He went off on him for a short time calling him names and goofing on him.

Oh that crazy Sheik, pity WWE didn't give him his segment.

Yes, I've shit on TNA a lot lately, but I've also given them credit when I felt it's been due. Since May, they've usually been a reliable source of weekly wrestling, with one Impact broadcast having three matches on it that I considered to be either good or really good - it was a show that played to TNA's strengths, and made great use of their roster.

I don't think tonight was one of those shows, and I wasn't all that happy about the show-long title match because of how disjointed it became due to the run-ins and cuts backstage that took up the whole screen and made it impossible to follow the match all that well - a feeling that I've seen echoed by folks at the tapings, who said the match was far better live than it was on TV due to those problems. It was still a very good match, but not one that made me say "WOW, that was incredible!" after a show, like say... the Joe-Daniels TNA Special match that opened joined in progress, or the Storm-Harris Impact bloodbath, or the Rhino-Christian steel cage match, or even the AJ Styles-Kid Kash match from an FSN Impact.

TNA usually tapes two Impacts, not four, in one taping night, and plenty of companies have made due with only one hour of TV a week - that alone isn't a valid excuse for a sub-par one hour show.

I'd have to say this was a below average Impact this week myself. The wrestling was okayish - nothing to write home about but nothing bad either. I could of done without the whole Jerry Springer-esque stuff between Kurt Angle, his wife, and Samoa Joe. Talk about yet another way TNA is going to kill and bury their fued.

And sadly from the spoilers it continues into next week too....

Some potentially great news - Shelly Martinez is in talks to do some solo porn shoots with Jewel De'Nyle's company. Apparently, they'll be themed, like her past nude video shoots, but more explicit.

Raw's revised rating is a 2.9 - not as bad as the original, but still quite below WWE's average for the year.

I'm interested to see if she still has those dinnerplate nipples or if they got fixed.

Nice pix JJSP! Thanks!

Apparently Vince may be making a return to try and do a turnaround on those ratings.

Indeed; that picture of Necro Butcher is excellent.

Rumors swirl that Vince is encouraging "outside the box" thinking in order to boost ratings; that's rather fascinating, since one would expect that he would ride out the low ratings until Triple H and Rey Mysterio return, hoping they would boost ratings.

Personally, I don't expect anything really notable changing. Cena will still be the champ, muscleheads will still be pushed, and wrestling matches will still, by and large, be 3-5 minutes of overcooked nonsense. I often wonder if WWE really needs to do what the IWC says (go back to wrestling, let wrestlers shine on their own, push smaller guys, and ditch scriptwriting for promos) in order to thrive again, or if it's something else (I often think the three shows need substantial format changes - the backstage segments, in-ring rambling promos, and hyper-fast 4-week title feuds).

In the end, I think, anyone expecting dramatic changes for the better on WWE programming is a goddamned fool, myself included. Take a look at how Vince reacted to the fans' reaction to ECW. He ditched Hammerstein ballroom and ECW Arena as shows, put them touring with Smackdown in order to make it a more mainstream crowd, and essentially took away everything "ECW" except the name. The crowd didn't react the way he wanted them too, so he acted like a petulant child, grabbing up his toys and yelling "MINE! MINE! MINE!" before running home sobbing.

ECW is the perfect reminder that none of us will see anything groundbreaking happen on WWE programming. Instead, we'll see pseudo-controversial angles and bullshit ex-celebrities. Instead of letting Paul London wrestle like he can, and amaze the crowd, we'll have Mario Batali and Bob Barker in a tag match against Umaga and Stephanie McMahon.

EDIT: One crucial change is to keep title-feuding guys away from each other, at least in matches. So, guess what? CM Punk is wrestling Johnny Nitro at SummerSlam for the ECW title! Whoopee Doo! Hasn't CM Punk already lost 2 or more times (on television, no less) to Nitro in the past month? Why would I want to pay to see him in a title match that's no been rendered meaningless by the number of times they've fought in 2 months? There's no mystique to that match, because it's already happened too many times recently; nobody will pay money to watch that (and even if Punk wins, it's meaningless because Nitro would then have 3 or 4 wins over Punk to Punk's 1). It's a recipe for failure, yet many, many feuds are just like this (see also Angle/Joe).

The idea is to have the face keep losing until he can finally rise up.

Oh, and as far as ECW goes, you can never completely please a smark crowd. I don't even know why they tried. Mcmahon realized this, picked up his ball, and took it elsewhere. To a crowd who doesn't complain about everything. This helps especially on the tapings or the ppvs. *ahem* Fire Russo *ahem*
The idea is to have the face keep losing until he can finally rise up.
That's working for Stevie Richards right now. NOT for a main eventer; while feuds can go on for several matches (esp. given a cheating heel retaining), to do it in such rapid succession is absurd. 4 matches+ in 2 months? So what if he wins a title now - probability means it was bound to happen.

One person's "finally rise up" is another's "this sucker gets ANOTHER shot!?!?! jeez!"

I see your point to a degree, but not entirely. Look at it this way: will it matter if Kevin Thorn beats Stevie Richards in 2-3 weeks? Stevie will surely pin him again, and then, finally, Thorn will get his "reciept" in the form of a single pin. It will mean nothing. Like playing SFII online, I will eventually beat someone else - but if it takes me 15+ matches to finally score a win, so fuckin' what? I'm knee deep in losses by then, so it's a Pyrrhic victory at best.

Oh, and as far as ECW goes, you can never completely please a smark crowd. I don't even know why they tried. Mcmahon realized this, picked up his ball, and took it elsewhere. Yes, but smarks (1) spend LOTS of money on wrestling and (2) will never stop watching wrestling. You're right, they are thankless bastards who are always demanding and rarely appreciative. But, the difference is, McMahon took his show to a crowd that's stopped coming, to a large degree. ECW's ratings will probably continue to fall at this rate, and bottom out around 0.8 - which Sci Fi won't be happy about. So, the question is, do you intentionally let a program stagnate to the point where it gets cancelled, or do you let the smart marks have one hour of programming per week, and let the show thrive around 1.0-1.5 every week?

As a means on comparison, IIRC, Raw's ratings right now (mid-high 2's) are *precisely* where WCW Nitro was when it was canned. ECW is right where Thunder was when it was canned. Now, I'm no fool; I don't think WWE programming is going anywhere. But, they're knee deep in shit right now, and if they continue to run away from the one fan base that will never leave them, sooner or later they'll find that's all they have left.

Supposedly McMahon is trying to make things change. Word backstage is that he found out that writers were just writing to please him. Also, supposedly the wirters are stressed out. I'm not one to say that they should get fired, but we need new writers.

Also, you guys should hope TNA doens't start ****ing up, seeing as WWE is getting closer to their ball park.

Oh, and that was a lowest raw rating since October 97 supposedly, but there's no WCW. Which is sad.

Maybe he might call up Paul E. ?
Apparently Vince may be making a return to try and do a turnaround on those ratings.
Wonder how they'll explain his return. I can just hear J.R. now, "uh, I guess he didn't die when the limo exploded".

Something I didn't catch until reading the wrestling news. I guess the reason Ashley was "suspended" was to go off and do a Survivor show. But she's already been booted off the show.

I don't think they'll address Vince's exploding limo. That got kind of buried after the whole Benoit thing.

And "Boo!" at the Survivor spoiler! It's my TV guilty pleasure thanks to my fiancee's relentless watching of the show.
Damn I see why Angle's wife was a stripper! Karen is hot :) I love the new ego driven Angle!
Googling Karen Angle now...

The show has finished filming, so everyone has been booted off. So, you can *look forward* to seeing Ashley again soon. Probably on Raw too, for no reason other than it's WWE. Hell, she'll probably bring the diva search back with her too... just pile it on!

Word around the office is that they (they being whoever does Survivor) didn't want Ashley to be back on TV until Survivor was done airing early next year.

Thanks Zen and Myke. I had a bunch of better shots from the Necro/Dragon match, but some fat dude who was acting as ring security kept getting in my way. Not too shabby for a little Sony digital. I've got a few videos I've taken from past shows as well as this one I'm in the process of uploading to YouTube.

I'm headed to BOLA, so I'll definitely have more from PWG. If I can figure out how to rip things from DVD's, I'll try and post up some matches from the little indie fed that could.

JJSP - is that Roderick Strong in top picture? Who is he facing?

Apparently Jimmy Rave asked for his release from his Ring of Honor contract last Friday and got it granted. I expect he will show up in TNA or WWE very soon.
