The Wii in its first year was more valuable than it is now. There was hope then. The future was bright. We, the lifelong gamers, believed that Nintendo had truly ignited a revolution in gaming, and there would be no going back. Then we found out in the years to come that their definition of revolution in the gaming industry was something wholly different from what we had imagined: they meant to entice the "I've never played video games before" population with applications that didn't fit the mold of traditional game genres. It was a sound business strategy and paid off hugely, but we gamers realized that what we wanted was something that Nintendo either could not or would not give. Perhaps the Nintendo we so nostalgically remembered was a fiction that could not be returned to us. Perhaps it was a mere stepping stone in the company's evolutionary direction away from our childhoods. Either way, our dreams had been shaken, and we were brought back to reality. Now we see the Wii for what it is: a toy of slight build with a transcendent idea but directed far from us.
I think one of my biggest gaming regrets was Seaman. The technology was something to behold, but in the end, you were wasting hours upon hours to feed, clean, and teach something that would only hate you more and more. It was an exhausting lesson of life.
It seems that Nintendo does this with everything, put out a console or peripheral and promise huge things for it. When people realize those huge things Nintendo promised were nothing short of a hoax (ok, its not THAT bad), they have already got your money so they don't care. Why release more games now when American's are happy buying shovelware, why make it good when we can release garbage in the USA and people will buy it?
I bought the original DS on the PROMISE that good games would come out, little did I know how long it would take for those good games to come. Once again I will never buy a system only on a promise again, the goods have to be on the shelf available at the store and I have to see it with my own eyes before I buy it.
I don't know what Nintendo is going to do next generation, the people who bought the Wii (casuals) are satisfied with what came in the box, and are not interested in buying anything other than Wii sports or perhaps Wii fit. They can't sell to the casuals again, simply because they will not buy it again when they already have something that works perfectly. These people will not drop another $200 or more dollars on another console when they already have something and it satisfies their needs, especially in this economy. Nintendo did well with the casual's strategy, but its not something they will be able to repeat.
The iPhone/iPod touch already has the casual market, and kids here are abandoning their DS's in droves for the iPod touch or the iPhone if the parents can afford the phone. At least that is what I can see in my family, every kid has abandoned the DS for the iPod Touch and now the DS's sit idle. With the price on the iPod touch dropping further and further and the majority of games costing less than $6 a pop and some even being free, this is gonna be hard to beat with a new Nintendo handheld system when most of the kids have already migrated over to the cooler and better thing. Note quality of games aside here, I am fully aware that the DS has much better quality games than the iPod touch, but the kids don't seem to care, they have a console at home for the better games and the iPod touch suffices perfectly for portable game play. Kids don't care about the quality of the games, the games on the iPod touch are fine for them.
