biggest buyer's remorse?
The Wii in its first year was more valuable than it is now. There was hope then. The future was bright. We, the lifelong gamers, believed that Nintendo had truly ignited a revolution in gaming, and there would be no going back. Then we found out in the years to come that their definition of revolution in the gaming industry was something wholly different from what we had imagined: they meant to entice the "I've never played video games before" population with applications that didn't fit the mold of traditional game genres. It was a sound business strategy and paid off hugely, but we gamers realized that what we wanted was something that Nintendo either could not or would not give. Perhaps the Nintendo we so nostalgically remembered was a fiction that could not be returned to us. Perhaps it was a mere stepping stone in the company's evolutionary direction away from our childhoods. Either way, our dreams had been shaken, and we were brought back to reality. Now we see the Wii for what it is: a toy of slight build with a transcendent idea but directed far from us.

I think one of my biggest gaming regrets was Seaman. The technology was something to behold, but in the end, you were wasting hours upon hours to feed, clean, and teach something that would only hate you more and more. It was an exhausting lesson of life.
It seems that Nintendo does this with everything, put out a console or peripheral and promise huge things for it. When people realize those huge things Nintendo promised were nothing short of a hoax (ok, its not THAT bad), they have already got your money so they don't care. Why release more games now when American's are happy buying shovelware, why make it good when we can release garbage in the USA and people will buy it?

I bought the original DS on the PROMISE that good games would come out, little did I know how long it would take for those good games to come. Once again I will never buy a system only on a promise again, the goods have to be on the shelf available at the store and I have to see it with my own eyes before I buy it.

I don't know what Nintendo is going to do next generation, the people who bought the Wii (casuals) are satisfied with what came in the box, and are not interested in buying anything other than Wii sports or perhaps Wii fit. They can't sell to the casuals again, simply because they will not buy it again when they already have something that works perfectly. These people will not drop another $200 or more dollars on another console when they already have something and it satisfies their needs, especially in this economy. Nintendo did well with the casual's strategy, but its not something they will be able to repeat.

The iPhone/iPod touch already has the casual market, and kids here are abandoning their DS's in droves for the iPod touch or the iPhone if the parents can afford the phone. At least that is what I can see in my family, every kid has abandoned the DS for the iPod Touch and now the DS's sit idle. With the price on the iPod touch dropping further and further and the majority of games costing less than $6 a pop and some even being free, this is gonna be hard to beat with a new Nintendo handheld system when most of the kids have already migrated over to the cooler and better thing. Note quality of games aside here, I am fully aware that the DS has much better quality games than the iPod touch, but the kids don't seem to care, they have a console at home for the better games and the iPod touch suffices perfectly for portable game play. Kids don't care about the quality of the games, the games on the iPod touch are fine for them.

I haven't really had any buyer's remorse. Mainly because I like to research things before I buy them. I guess the biggest thing would be baseball cards. I bought close to 2000 baseball cards in junior high. However, at the time, I enjoyed them. I still have them in binders and shoe boxes in a closet somewhere.

I also bought a sega genesis and some games for the same price of a PlayStation. I don't regret it too much, because I played the heck out of the genesis and I picked up a PlayStation a year later.

Now that I think about it, my biggest regret was buying a xbox 360. I purchased it when Halo 3 was released because I got caught up in the hype. At the time, I was pretty heavily invested in World of Warcraft, so I barely played the 360. I probably spent maybe 20 hours or so on the system for the two years I had it. I think I spent more time watching dvd's on it, than actually playing games.

Comic books, sports cards, spawn figures, biggest ever... Atari Jaguar for $300 (back in 96) and games at $50 (to add insult to injury, I traded all of my SNES and GEN games/system for cash to pay towards the atari... around 40 games combined for a measely $150 and $250 cash from birthdays and xmas'). Boy was I naive when I was a kid.

WOW, Where to start.... I am usualy smart when it comes to buying things, I think my biggest remorse is trading in my PS1 collection(mostly Rare RPGs) for my GAmecube because Starfox adventures looked amazing...lol. I traded in what is now worth over $500 for what is now worth about $30.....sad.

Hard for me to think of gaming related stuff, but if I had to pick it would probably have been buying Doom 3 on launch day for full price. That hurt, as I disliked the game and had cut out some living stuff to get it as I was working a job that didn't pay well.

For non-game-related things, it would have to be when I bought my 2004 Saturn Ion. The car was pretty crappy, and the novelty of having a manual transmission wore of really fast when having to travel 30+ miles one way to my job in rush-hour traffic.

Seems to me you liked it enough to make it part of your username.

Definitely my Wii in the past year and a half. Only game I've played has been Super Mario Galaxy, and that's a 2 and a half year old game.

i would have to agree with the baseball cards and comics and action figures years ago. too many games to count from day one purchase over the many years.
Seems to me you liked it enough to make it part of your username.
That's been my user ID on other forums and eBay since 2000, when I owned an SL2, the car I shouldn't have gotten rid of when I bought the Ion.

oh dont get me started about cars. I drive a 1993 mercury tracer and its literally held together with duct tape. :/
Anyway... my most regretted purchase is the PS3. Never have I owned a system that gets in the way of enjoying my games as much as the PS3. Honestly, I have spent more time installing, updating, troubleshooting... than I have spent playing. Switching over to the wii feels like a relaxing break after trying to enjoy something on the PS.
I do hate that about my PS3- turn on system. Get told to update. Download update part 1. Download update part 2. Install update. Restart. Initalize update. Get to menu and pick game. Get told game needs to update- just let me play already! Geez!

The Nintendo Wii I had. I never got rid of a system so fast before. I just didn't like it. Motion controls felt broke. (If anyone says the new motion plus bullshit, I AM NOT fuckING PAYING MORE BECAUSE NINTENDO DIDN'T DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!)

i had considered getting the Wii because of the Wii shop channel. that was the hook for getting the system(i thought?). earthbound?

All I ever used the Wii for was VC games. I have Zelda, NiGHTS, SMG and SSBB, but the only game I've actually played from beginning to end was NiGHTS. Had I not bought my Wii the day it came out, I would've bought it just for that game. I don't exactly regret buying it, though.
Sports cards/comics/pogs from when I was a kid. I also went through about 400 bucks a few years back playing Sangokushi Taisen. It was a Japanese arcade game my local Gameworks got in. It was a strategy game where you moved player cards across a board and every game you play you get a free card. Of course I had to get a gold card my first game and got hooked. Now I'm left with a shitton on gold cards for a game that is now obsolete.
Oh man... I remember those days. I've probably got 200+ comics and 500+ cards (Marvel, Pokemon, and basketball). Those are just all taking up space now. I remember buying a ton of price guides too... thinking those things were worth more than they actually were.

About the only things worth anything from my childhood are my Transformers.

It's not that they didn't do it right the first time, they made it separate to keep the price cheap in the beginning and to have time to refine it. I don't get why people constantly complain about the price. A Wiimote with Motion Plus is no more expensive than a 360 or PS3 controller. It's also optional and has been bundled with games that use it.

Besides, you're on CAG. You should know how to get it for cheap. I got Wii Sports Resort for $30 a few weeks after it came out.

there are few games that use it though.

I'm sick of all the peripherals for the Wii. Having a set of 4 wii controllers + CC's + nunchucks + gamecube controllers = complete mess in my apartment.

Wow, you all suck. The Wii is great. Granted it took a little time for Nin to get all their biggest titles on shelves but it was totally worth it. And while I disapprove of all the updating Sony does with the PS3 I don't regret my 60gb either, BC is useful unlike the rest of the non-gaming fluff on there. (Who wants a damn BR player? Yuck.)

Honestly I can't think of any. Never bought an HDTV so I can't complain like the OP. I did buy Blitz 2 for $15, but only because it was that cheap and I hoped it was like the older versions. That's the last bad game I bought for either console. That kind of crap belongs on the 360 or something, lol.

Biggest gaming purchase regret is the wii as well. GF wanted it, bought it for her, bought a bunch of games, only really played wii play and that was it. Damn girls, lol.

WTF? When I update my ps3 its easy as pie. Would you like to update? OK. Wait a few minutes, turn back to the PS3 and I'm ready to go.

I don't understand the part 1, part 2, initialize? My ps3 just downloads everything then restarts itself. Is this for a certain game or something?

There isn't too much I have buyer's remorse from. About the only things I can think of:

Pokemon TCG: I spent a ton of my money on these. Though, I also made a ton off them. I started selling them off and made a big chunk of money right before they quite being "the in thing". Dunno if I made all my money back, but, I had fun.

Pogs: Got into this for one year when a cousin showed me them. I was pretty young, so, I spent my parent's money to buy them (from allowance and such). Not a big deal, since I didn't go overboard...but I probably could've spent the money on something better.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (import): Everyone said this would *never* be available here in the US; that it was too hard to get the license for all the characters here. So when Play-Asia had it on "sale" (a mere $5 off whatever they were charging), I finally caved and bought it. Played it a total of two times...before hearing it was gonna get a US release! :bomb: Again, that's actually not even that big a deal, since I prolly spent less than $50 total...but it's definitely annoying.

Updating on the PS3 is definitely longer than on the 360. A lot longer. So I get where they are going with that. But I don't know if I would have buyer's regret over it or consider it something that ruins the experience for me. A few extra minutes are not that big of a deal.

I see a lot of people mention cards, and even though I have too have some regret over them, I also think they teach a lot of valuable lessons as a young kid, like organization skills, doing math on the fly, and learning to take care of one's valuables.

Wow, seriously? I'm glad it has a Blu-Ray player.

bought my ps3 at blockbuster cause it came with a movie and was clearanced down to like 350, fifty bucks off at the time. 2 days later best buy had it on sale with guitar hero 3 and a 50 dollar gift card. the thing that kills me is that it was probably posted on here somewhere, but i never checked.

Probably Japanese Pokemon TCG cards. I had a flea market in my town when I was a kid and bought a shit ton of them over the course of two years and when I finally found a tournament and people to play against they told me I wasn't allowed to play because Foreign decks were against regulations. My little ten year old soul shattered, I shelved them and never went back. Probably spent close to 300 dollars on that crap. Pretty cool looking art on them at least.

Got to go with my Kindle. Loved it for four months, then when I finally finished everything on it I started looking for something new. When I couldn't find what I wanted on Amazon, I drove down the street and got a library card.

Wish I had done that four months earlier.

This thread was good until it started into a PS2 vs 360 vs Wii debate.

Seriously you people have nothing better to do than argue about this? I own all 3, problem solved.

PS3.

I bought one of the "older" versions (brand new!) the week before the new (slim) versions came out.

I don't regret it though...have used it a lot more than my 360 ever since :)

Same here, I love video games too much to limit myself to one console.

Fanboyism is an immature way of saying, "this is the only system my parents would buy me, so it's the best" The mature way of dealing with this is to say "All 3 consoles have their pros and cons, I am happy with one the console I have."

im slightly remorsefully i got a 10 game backlog from the holidays but im glad i got those deals because id be paying more now. :)

recently i got a nice pair of usb headphones for like everything, tv, ps3, xbox so i can play late at night without waking anyone up. well then i find out the headphones wont play game sound at all through the usb ports for teh consoles, jsut mic stuff.

i then went out of my way to hook it up optically to my pc but the sound would jsut go to my speakers, not my usb headphones.

then mykeyboard broke, went to newegg to get a new one and seen a nice dj set of headphones for sell for 20$ that uses one of them 2mm plugs. got that with my keyboard and problem solved. have to say the new set of headphones just blow me away with how good teh sound is. no mic but i didn't get it for the mic. whast sucks i now i got a clear chat usb headset i dont use now hehe.:)

But, but, but... you are asserting that 'mature' might have a meaning other than "guns and tits".

My biggest buyer's remorse could have been Super Monkey Ball Adventure, but somehow it came up as free when my wife bought it for me. What a terrible game. I don't regret getting it for free. I am really not sure what my biggest regret is.

Mine would be Street Fighter IV for full retail + tax. Not that it's not a great game, but it was one of the extremely rare times when I felt I needed to play a game today instead of finding a better online deal. In retrospect, I should have been patient and saved $20 or so.

The only other recent game I've paid full price in a store for was Borderlands, and that one was worth every penny.

Since everyone is bringing up consoles, I regret buying a 360 now that I have a PS3. One of the main reasons I bought a 360 was in anticipation of the Banjo Kazooie sequel. That turned out to be building game with horrible physics and hideous character design. I have no interest in owning it. The 360 has a piss poor selection of exclusives. Halo 3 doesn't do anything for me anymore. Neither does Gears. I do love Crackdown though. Outside of those, I can't think of any 360 exclusives besides racing games (zzz....) and games that are also on PC (where they're always better). If it wasn't for all my Rock Band equipment and the songs I've downloaded, I would get rid of it.
Wow, seriously? I'm glad it has a Blu-Ray player.

Really?
Yeah, I've absolutely zero interest in movies. They've sucked for ages. My last two were the Matrix, and the Simpsons movie on DVD. My PS3 is for games alone and having BC is a far better feature than movie and music playback, Home, web browsing, and all the other fluff. Don't we all have PC's for that? I don't regret the purchase though since I'm not paying for the gimmicks I don't use. Thankfully the Wii stays pretty focused on games and doesn't update nearly as often.

While the topic gets a little old I must say I feel sorry for you. You only needed 2 to experience everything worthwhile from thie generation. That's why I got the Wii first and then chose a PS3. The money I saved means I can add more games to my backlog instead of being nickel and dimed all the time.

I would have to say my entire backlog (40+ sealed games going right now!). I want to play them because they are damn good games but something even newer comes out and I get to playing that one and forget about the 'log. Damn!

I REGRET NOTHING, AND ALL ARE FOOLISH FOOLISH CONSUMERS TO REGRET PURCHASES. ok, just kidding, but the time value of money states that value goes down with time so considering all the factors, its best not to think about losing money like that. If you regret paying what you did, why did you spend it in the first place, right? Probably not the answer you all were looking for.

I'm pushing 50 (16 Wii, 34 PS3) not including the DS. I may not play the latest releases (like Bayonetta, F3 GOTY, or Uncharted 2) until later this year if not next, but at least I got a significant discount on them and don't have to worry about buying a grimy used copy for the same price. I think I caught up by 12-14 games this winter break.

You regret your backlog? I have over 500 games still sealed, (and no, I am not joking) that I have yet to get to. To put it in perspective, I have close to 6000 games over 20+ systems and dont regret having this collection at all There are some of my games shown in the classic thread. It may take my whole life to try to play all of it, but I dont care. I collect (and play) games just like others collect cards, stamps, etc.

lol and I thought I had a lot with 400+ physical titles. True to your name, true to your name.

Oh, if you're going to include classic stuff then my backlog shoots through the roof. I've 30+ consoles and no I haven't played or completed all of those games. I got some extras when I bought games in lots on Ebay or when buying unused consoles from friends. Maybe not quite 500 (and none are sealed, I buy games to play them), but there are a lot. I easily own 500-1000 games, going for quality over numbers. No sports, barely any console FPS's or fighters.

One that comes to mind right away is the Rock Band 1 drum set. I traded in $60 in games plus $20 cash for it and used it twice. Right now it has laundry piled on top of it. Later on I got the better made RB2 drum set that came in the RB2 bundle, but I barely use that either.

Other than that I'd say I regret spending the few hundred dollars on clothes (coats, shirts, pants - you name it) in the past couple years that either don't fit (I got thinner I guess) or I just don't like the style anymore.

\joke
Will we end up seeing some of these CAGs on the next episode of "hoarders", where people collect stuff because its cheap or what not? Not implying hoarding for resale but hoarding as in accumulating stuff...
/joke

As investments go these days, videogames are just another avenue to storing value, just like some stocks, baseball cards, etc. But as investments go, it is all about what the next person will pay you for your item (wishing more, dreading less, happy to break even over time?).

Next up: will I regret buying the TE fight stick for $100 if I only use it for a few months?
