BIOSHOCK - Gen. Discussion & Info

is anyone else having massive freezing issues since the update? I'm not sure if it was a dash update or a bioshock update but I had to download something a few days back when I popped bioshock in and now the game freezes for like 3-6 seconds in every 10-30 second interval. It's making the game unplayable and I'm getting really pissed off. It's not the game disc, I checked it and its pristine, and I don't think its my machine because I have been playing a lot of eternal sonata and skate lately with no problems what so ever.

Clear your Bioshock cache. As soon as you start the game from the dashboard hold down RB+LB. Keep them held down until at least after the red 2K logo.

dude, I love you. thank you so much for the tip everything is working just fine now.

I just beat the game for the second time (this time on Hard, saving all Sisters). I feel pretty much the same as I did before. That it's a near great game plagued by an unsatisfying conclusion (no matter what ending you get) and horribly unbalanced weapons.

I mean there's a shitload of tonics that bulk up your wrench, but none that make your guns anymore powerful, making them all but useless for most of the game (except in Big Daddy battles). While there's a lot of room for creativity in the game's combat, the most effective solution was usually the simplest. In this case, shock and whack. It's a shame too as I really liked the idea of having to scurry around looking for ammo. Perhaps one day I'll replay the game for a third time and will myself not to use the wrench.

i still liked the game overall. The atmosphere, visuals, music, and the fact that the combat never plays out the same way twice made it all a pretty great experience. But with just a slight bit of tweaking it really could have been something amazing. sigh

Even though I realize the shock/wrench is the most effective tactic, I never use it because I'd get bored. The game is easy enough with the death penalty so I like being creative with the weapons still, since that's about the only thing to make the game challenging.

Yeah. I used the wrench a lot. But I probably used the Machine Gun the most, shotgun 2nd, and wrench 3rd. I think I used the chemical thrower like twice. I only used the pistol in the beginning of the game, and occasionally used the anti-personnel bullets. The crossbow and grenade launcher I only used against Big Daddies.

I used the Chemical thrower a lot, it was just a lot of fun. I used the liquid nitrogen on the Big Daddys all the time.

Well, I have beat the game.

I got the good ending, and I looked up the other 2 on youtube. The bad ending is more impressive in its graphical presentation but definitely not as good as the "good" ending. The 3 endings are all too short though. 2 minute clips? Bullshit!

I am happy I am done with this game. It has gotten FAR too much praise. 10/10's Are you fucking kidding me!? I could make a repetitive as shit game too! Overall the game was alright, and had there not been such a dry spell of games this summer, and the need for some game to tide us over until Halo, this game wouldn't have gotten those 10's. This game is more of a high 8 or a low 9. I can't believe people want to run back and play this game again. I was literally crying of boredom when the game glitched and made me have to follow the little sister to Fontaine again. SO BORING!

Generally speaking I enjoyed it but it did fissle out a bit at the end, seemed like they ran out of ideas and the whole "becoming a big daddy" thing really seemed like a pointless fetch quest.

I mean one of the little sisters helped you earlier and you didn't need to be a big daddy then, unless I missed something.

Great game and great atmosphere. I personally think it was much better than Half-Life 2.

I agree that the end went out with a whimper though.

I'll be replaying it again just to try different options.

Man, I ended up selling the game before I even finished with it.

I suppose had Prime 3 not hit I'd have beat it, but it felt like, as others have said, things just fizzled. I kinda felt like through the whole game that it would've been so much better as a different genre. That whole atmosphere would've been great for more along the lines of an adventure game or more legit survival-horror, but the FPS stuff slapped on that great world never felt right to me.

Maybe a focus on more strategy with the Big Daddies and fewer or no splicer guys? I dunno. Something just never clicked with me, despite production values being through the roof.
Im sick of the stupid spoilers...You guys obviously dont read. Im answering the question about how the airplane got where it was. Look if your reading this thread and havent beaten the game at this point thats your fault. What good would come out of reading this thread?
This is cheapassgamer.com. Some people might be waiting for a price drop or will buy the game used at a later date. Others might be trying to trade for it as we speak. Have a little empathy with your fellow CAGs. Not everybody here has the means to get every great title on release, nor do all CAGs have the time to play through a game as quickly as others. Pushing the "spoiler" tag buttons will take an extra second. Hopefully others will be kind enough to do the same for you in case you would like to discuss a game you have not passed yet.

Agreed. I liked the FPS part, but there were only 4 plasmids that were good in the game, and towards the end I just used my guns. Splicers were often too annoying, not because they were hard but just repetitive. The big daddies were never really strong, and made collecting sisters too easy.

I have heard rumors of them making a sequel... how will that work with this 2 ending system?

Hey well MGS had sequels so why not...although the ending is perhaps not as majorly different as the one in Bioshock

So, I'm a little short on research points for Bouncers and Houdini Splicers. Anyone know of good places to find those two enemies for some photos?
So, I'm a little short on research points for Bouncers and Houdini Splicers. Anyone know of good places to find those two enemies for some photos?
Arcadia, probably. That's where Houdinis are first introduced. I think Rosies were introduced there too but I recall plenty of Bouncers. It didn't get Rosie heavy until late game.

Really? I found the opposite. Bouncers all through the beginning, Rosies for like 3 levels in the middle, then tons of bouncers again for the end. Arcadia is definitely all Rosies, though.

It's definitely interesting hearing where people ran into what Big daddies. Levine always said they have no set path so the game will play different everytime for everyone.

I saw one Rosie throughout the first 75% of the game, and then the last two levels were all Rosies.

They have set patrol paths, however, which type spawns is probably random. Atleast, the initial. Any replacements for a killed Daddy seem to be of the same type.

They're pretty much all you see in the last 1-2 levels; besides being stronger, they're nothing special.
No one mentioned Elites. They're not rare or something, are they?
Reminds me of Metroid Prime 3 where the last part of a game goes out on a sizzle, as you are on a boring fetch quest.

I became too strong early on in the game with an upgraded crossbow, or did everyone become that way? I could easily kill any Big Daddy in 3 hits. And my wallet kept exploding from all the monies--I couldn't spend it fast enough. The boss was dissapointing, because he was sooo easy to beat with an upgraded shotgun. I only had to use 1 heath kit.

just finished the game tonight and I got to say it was awesome, I didn't get the good ending because I did do some harvesting. Definitely one of my favorites for the next gen games.
I'm about to officailly start my game soon, I haven't really had much time.

So... tips/tricks, will be appreciated.
Rescuing pays off in the end with 100 GS and the same amount of ADAM.

I can agree halfway. I wish the game had more adventure elements (like puzzles) and as I mentioned in a previous post, the weapon balance was rather uneven making the core non-Big Daddy combat a bit repetitive towards the end. I'd also agree that the game contains too much ammo and money (even on hard).

HOWEVER, one of my favorite things about the game was how it handled enemy placement and respawning. I liked how enemies respawn, but only irregularly and in random locations, so even when you go through cleared areas you have to stay on guard. This was something that bothered me in games like RE4 where it's scary, until you clear an area, then you're all safe and secure. Bioshock and the Fatal Frame games are the only survival horror games I've played where you're never safe. The excellent sound design helped keep things relatively creepy throughout as well.

Just finished the game today and I thought the game was slightly overrated in terms of its review scores, but in general the atmosphere remained great throughout the game.

As for the ending ... what can I say that people here haven't said. I agree:

Booooooo ....

Playing it right now...

The sound isnt loud since everyone is asleep, but this isnt the greatest game ever...its good so far but meh, glad i got it for free :)

Final post-mortem: Really, if they were trying for "NO GAMER WILL PLAY ANY ENCOUNTER THE SAME WAY TWICE", they needed to play a LOT more Psi-Ops. That is the standard for multi-approach combat that all others must be compared against.

That said, on Hard, endgame combat got iffy due to insane HP amounts on your foes, but, on the whole, there was enough meat there to last until the end. Woulda been nice to have a few more enemy types, (Endgame spoilers)
a story with fewer issues (Analyses can keep ignoring weak bits all they want.) and plotholes. (I spoilered this because the game should be enjoyed without foreknowledge of a weak story.)
, but, in the end, Bioshock is a solid game, good atmosphere, good gunplay, good scrounging for supplies, definitely GotY material, but please keep it away from Ebert.

Stinger quote for the game: (Spoilers for anyone who hasn't cleared the surgery wing, but nothing beyond that.)
"What can I do with this one Aphrodite? She WON'T. STAY. STILL."

Which is better,
the good ending or bad ending?

Don't tell me what it is just tell me if its worth getting it. (call me old fashioned but I like happy endings.)

I personally likef the good ending, but they're both so short that i don't really think it should make that much of a difference to you. I wouldn't play a certain way for 10-15 hours for a 60 seconds clip at the end :p

That makes sense, thanks for your input.

I had the same issue with MP3 corruption which i just beat two nights ago. I only scanned 73% of the items, then i went on you tube and watched the other endings. It was a piece of cake and not worth taking longer to beat the game with 100% since i got it from gamefly.

I thought both endings kind of sucked. Great gameplay, but I don't know why people love the story so much. I will say there are some bonuses to playing the Good way though.

this game isn't about the ending though, the entire story and experience is everything before and during your visit to rapture. the ending is pretty much meaningless compared to everything else going on.

Last night i got to the part where I just left the docks area and entered an area wtih a lot of green vegetation with splicers that disappear and reappear. This was right after whats his name's family was in that pod that Ryan blew up. Did they die? How far into it am I (25%)?

Ah, yes, Atlas' family... hehe... I'm resisting the urge to put a spoiler here. ;)

Ah, yeah, about 25%. You've got 5 "chapters" left after that, and they gradually get a bit longer, so 25% sounds good.

Thanks for resisting the urge. Im def. a spoiler-hater.

PPl on cag are better about it though than on IGN. Here they have the spoiler button which is cool.

I finished the game a few days ago and I'm running through it again to get the Historian achievement and to just run through it again because it was fun. I gotta say...

Though the ending was a bit short and the boss battle wasn't the most complicated process (circle and shoot...circle and shoot...etc.), I love this game. The atmosphere, the array of powers you can use, the ominous voice acting/big daddy stomping on my surround sound, they all just made it a really fun experience.

You can detract from it in some spots, sure, but I didn't feel that the run-and-fetch missions were overly long and I didn't feel the plotholes (though they exist) detracted too much from the overall experience. Excellent game, here's to Bioshock II topping it somehow.

I have a few questions about big daddies.

(1) Once you hypnotize them, do they stay that way forever?
(2) Are there big daddies that are not protecting a little sister?
(3) If the answer to 2 is yes, why kill them?
(4) If a hypnotized big daddy is killled by a splicer or something (seems unlikely), can you then harvest/rescue a little sister?

I basically dont quite get how the whole ADAM gathering fits in with a hypnotized big daddy that is protecting you.

1) No. It's only for a limited time and if you accidently hit/shoot it while it's protecting you, it will turn on you.
2) Yes, they're the only ones that can be hypnotized.
3) There isn't a reason, unless you need cash or are just in the mood for a fight. If you haven't found all Little Sisters in a level, though, you can follow a Big Daddy and he'll eventually meet up with one.
4) You'll never have Big Daddy that's protecting both you and a Little Sister.

1. No, it's temporary but pretty lengthy.
2. Yes, once you've dealt with all the Little Sisters on a level, Big Daddies will continue to spawn, they simply won't be accompanied by anyone.
3. You probably shouldn't unless you want to.
4. I'm not sure. Everytime I hypnotized a Big Daddy, it seemed to lose it's little sister. I don't know if she climbed back into the wall or what but I don't recall seeing them running around while me and my big friend are tearing things apart.
2) Yes, they're the only ones that can be hypnotized.
You can hypnotize the ones guarding a Little Sister, but she immediately runs away into one of the wall openings and you can't rescue/harvest her.

Thanks for the great responses max, halo and damian.

But she is not gone for good right? She will just regroup with another/respawned big daddie right?

Do little sisters respawn?
But she is not gone for good right? She will just regroup with another/respawned big daddie right?

Right, she's not gone for good. If there are Little Sisters left unharvested/rescued in a level they will eventually come out when a Big Daddy pounds by their vents. They don't respawn in the sense that there will always be more though, there is only a fixed number of Little Sisters per level that "respawn" if needed until you resolve them all.

okay i get it. So if i hypnotize a big daddie, the sister will run and hide in some crack in some wall until the next respawned big daddie stomps by.

If i rescue or harvest a little sister she is gone for good. The big daddie will just keep stompin around and not find a girl to hook up with.
