Black Sigil: Blade of the Exile (Out Now!)
well i've given it about an hour and so far, i definitely don't have a negative impression of it. My initial impression upon playing it was, "wtf? The battles are similar to lunar?"
sold.

Damn need more impressions badly... been waiting for this game a long time myself to but I am so backlogged beyond belief that I've pretty much stopped buying PSP and DS games. I still have yet to get back into Suikoden DS.
I won't get this till late... FFS sucks... should have ordered it on my wife's Prime account.
Totally unrelated, but, you should be able to share the Prime membership with your wife so you can use it, too. My husband shares mine.

So I put another two hours into it on the side today (up to 3 now). I'll go over my impressions so far and improve on them now that I have a little better grasp of things. The instruction booklet is pretty useless for the most part too. Which isn't the end of the world, especially when most others are pretty useless as well. However I felt like I was missing something so I skimmed through it looking to see if it was possible to run from battle and it's not as far as I can tell. I didn't gain any other insight towards the game and the screenshots in the manual are horrendous... lol

The battle system seems like a mix of Lunar and Chrono Trigger. Each area will have random 'battle maps' that you will enter like your typical turn-based rpg battle. The difference between this and lunar is that you'll have obstacles around the map that will prevent you from attacking enemies with certain characters and what not. Each character will have up to eight skills that have various abilities that range from small AoE to large AoE to just single target. The Chrono Trigger part comes in with combos. Now that I've gotten a second character, we learned a new skill after a few battles where the second character will enchant my weapon for a large AoE fire attack. It's pretty nice and will of course need both characters turns available and use both characters SP. In this game SP seems a little more leniant so far as it recovers a little bit after every battle and you don't need to go spamming it all the time.

The world map itself is your standard ugly ass FFV standard fair. You can't run across it, but it looks like at some point you will get a boat and an airship based on the map legend that you see the very first moment you step outside of town. Inside areas such as forests, dungeons, towns, etc you will be able to run by holding the A button like many RPGs. It doesn't seem to effect your battle rate when you use it, but I really don't feel like walking around everywhere to compare either. Especially with the high battle rate the game has already.

Story wise, the game has been proceeding really smoothly so far. I have some theories on what I might see ahead, but it's not black and white predictable like some other games. I really didn't see a recent event coming and now I'm left wondering how the game is going to play out from here. Of course it could still turn out to be an easy read, but it's honestly still too early to tell. Regardless, so far it's going pretty decent like I stated earlier.

The characters I've met so far are pretty unique. Their dialogue seems fairly well thought out and well written so far. Their personalities are going to be cliche since we've probably seen everything in the book and then some by this point, but I think I'll still enjoy them based on the dialogue I've seen so far. Character reactions are done pretty well considering the age of the sprites they're using. No, there's not really eye-popping reactions, but they're pretty close and it's pretty funny to see some of the weird reactions they've thought up.

As for backstories on characters, there isn't much outside of your main character which the game is being pretty cryptic about. It throws a lot of hints your way and random NPCs do possess a little bit of background knowledge on characters if you're someone who enjoys talking to every single living and non-living sprite that you come across.

Speaking of every single living sprite you come across... There are a lot of hidden passages and weird difficult-to-see chests all around. The second to last dungeon I ran had a lot of skeletons laying all around and some of them had items in them. The dungeon before that had some ivy covered chests and normal chests. Then towns have your standard fancy chests and i-like-to-blend-in type chests. So it's nice that so far they don't seem to be overusing sprites all the time. Granted an enemy or two so far has been reused from previously fought sprites. Not a big deal, but I hope there's not a whole lot of recycling.

Oh and remember that armor story where that old bitch fucked me over? Yeah, I got the good shit this time. It's significantly better than store bought for some time so far and costs less since you find all of the materials but one which needs to be bought. However the second time you go to get the armor made, it looks like it's timed to completion via story events rather than sleeping at the inn like the first one was.

I do have one negative thing to say so far about the game besides the frequent battling and not being able to run from battle (items may let me) is that the game froze on me once during a transition screen when I was leaving town. I believe I hit a couple buttons during it, which may of triggered it. Although I really hope it was just a unique occurance that won't happen again, but time will tell. So make sure to save often. (Possible at save points or while on the overworld)

From my experiences so far, I think that anyone who enjoys older generation RPGs should enjoy this one. I'll be going through this slowly at the moment, so don't expect me to write out a full review any time soon. It may be a couple weeks if not longer before I complete this game. Hopefully enough will be produced for people to purchase that far down the road considering nobody will really know about this game and will likely just become a cult classic.

How's the music? Back when this was revealed as a GBA game then-known as Project Exile, it had a really great track playing. It was haunting and epic and massive, and swelled into overtures and gave way to quiet whispers. I still hum it here and there, so I'm anxious about that particular area of the game design.
You remember music from trailers?
I think the correct question is, "You remember music from trailers over a YEAR ago?"

That said the music has been great. I'm not really a music fanatic like most people are, but I think the tracks so far have gone with the setting at the time pretty well so far.

EDIT: That Play Mag Review pretty much spoils the entire first two hours of the game and then the last paragraph (that isn't spoiling the first two hours) seems pretty thrown together. Although I do agree with them on their last paragraph that they wrote.
I cant find this game anywhere (Target, Walmart, Best buy, gamestop) not even that little birdie that has a file on the internet
Amazon has it in-stock.

gamefly keeps pushing the game back.. Now it wont ship till friday..

its just too bad i did not order it off amazon when it was still 22.99 : (

dont think its worth 28

I finally found out how to run from battle. To let you all know should you get the game, you have to hold down B while you're on a characters turn.

It's helping a lot in this one dungeon because I am not loaded with healing items and I can't use any healing magic. Shit fucking hurts sometimes and without healing magic... healing is a bitch.

Can't say for sure whether it's that good or not as the game does have a couple problems (pretty much what I mentioned a page ago). However it did become my primary game I'm playing now and Crimson Gem Saga will be my game on the side.

So I'm definitely liking it at least. Have put in about eight hours so far.

Oh and beware the sand worms when the game warns you about them. Mother fuckers shoot some epic apocalyptic ass kicking lasers of immenent doom out of their cyclopsian eye.
Anyone know how long this game is? It'll be nice to play a traditional RPG again.
read somewhere 30 to 50 hours not sure if that is right though

for those who missed it

AMAZON has it for 22.99 once again

looks like its FINALLY getting released tomorrow via gamefly and can have it to keep for little over 24 bucks... i will have around a week to play it to figure out if i want to keep it ornot

overon gamefaqs a lot of people are talking about the game freezing.... might just keep it as a rental and buy class of heroes instead

Yeah unfortunately there is freezing but based on what I've gathered so far, it doesn't seem to happen more than once in a blue moon. The people with a lot of crashing seem to be using the ROM/Flash Cart version. Time will tell on the retail copy ultimately. Regardless it seems to happen with the overworld. So as long as you're saving when you enter and are about to exit the overworld on top of save points, it shouldn't be an issue.

The game is getting more difficult as I go along. I'm pretty sure my parties levels are fine as the new guy who joined me is one to two levels below everyone else. Either that or he was ment to be two levels below the heroes level.

well i did all that talk about how I'd buy it.. guess it's time to call my bluff. Soon as I get cash this may be top of the purchase queue.

Well, I'm 15 hours in and it's only getting better. The game is a little slow to start but so long as the battle frequency doesn't drive you crazy and you don't hate old-school goodness, then you should find it good. Just make sure to save every chance you get on the rare chance the game locks up on you. I only had it that one time, but you can never be too cautious about things like that.

I put in about three hours this morning, and I have no real complaints. If you're a fan of old-school JRPGs, I don't see any reason not to pick this up. The dialogue is great, it's well-paced, and it's filled with SNES nostalgia. The encounter rate is a bit high, but the battles are involved enough to keep things interesting (think Dragon Quest meets Chrono Trigger).

I've had it freeze once on the cart for me in the first hour when I went to go use my bed in the castle. I had rested there before no problem, but this one time it did it. Just figured I'd that out to re-enforce the constant saves.

got it today off gamefly. lost about 30 mins of gameplay as the game went into a glitch and loaded up an old save file (from 30 mins ago) though WTF.....

if you like old style enemy attacks every 5 to 10 steps you will probally like it.... Could see this falling to 19.99 or under Very quickly.

okay game but after playing Gem saga for the psp , it just leaves a lot of stuff lacking

BUY and AMAZON has both pushed to almost 30 each..... gamefly still has it for 22.49 at least with the 10% off coupon for being there a year.....

abouit to send all of my stuff back tomorrow since i downgraded to one at a time...

NOT REALY Sure if this game is worth 24.00.... Could see it falling sub 20 soon enough
Could see it falling sub 20 soon enough
You say that about almost every DS game that comes out.
You say that about almost every DS game that comes out.
and most of them do.. dark spire fell to 20 very quickly.. few others ones i was thinking about buying as well.

V.profile for the ds fell to 19.99 deal of day on amazon. ect...

just way too many random encounters for me to really enjoy the game (that and i think im rpg tired after playing so many back to back to back)

Got my copy today, probably pop it in and check it out this weekend. I'm in the middle of Phantom Hourglass though and don't really want to start another RPG, but I'm going to at least check it out.

I've been hearing about a bug involving changing message speed that may prevent you from advancing further in the game. I've heard a small handful of people talk about it with a couple of them getting around it by changing the speed but it apparently doesn't work for some people. So I'll give the possible warning now since it's a game breaking bug.

I'm nearing the end I think, but I'm going to try and gather up a bunch of data before I finish as well as do all the side quests I can. Once that's done and I beat it, I'll probably write a review. It's a good game, but falls short of being a great game for various reasons.

There are definitely a ton of side quests and secret stuff all over the place. One in particular opened up a new town and changed another towns NPCs completely. I don't think it's possible to do everything in the game without a guide and there won't be one outside of usermade guides, but even then they'll be prone to missing information for some time.

As for length, my game clock says 34 hours but I think I have at least another five hours left not counting my data collecting. Since closing the DS and hitting pause during battles stops the clock, it's probably fairly accurate. I've also run from a majority of battles since they're pretty frequent too, so that also cut down my time.

Well it's not without its problems for sure. If you don't mind a heightened encounter rate and the possibility of the game freezing on you (Which shouldn't be an issue if you save every chance you get), then I'd definitely recommend it to those who enjoy the older style RPGs such as Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 5/6.

The beginning is slow and takes a couple hours to pick up story wise, but it gets better and the dialogue/characters are great in my opinion. I've probably put in another five hours since my last post since I couldn't sleep and still I still have yet to put a foot in the final dungeon. Although I did get the two secret characters and completed a couple more side quests. I'm also stuck on a side quest now and I still want to complete the arena... So yeah, the game is lengthy.

EDIT: Nevermind, Amazon bumped the price back up to $27~

so was the game breaking speed chat bug a rumor or is it true.... i have till monday to figure out to keep it for 24 or send it back to gamefly... need to send it back my monday to get Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor shipped weds

game length of what i heard was 30 to 60 hours (to do most to all of the side quest)

I've heard some people having an issue with it, but most seem to be able to change the speed back and then pass the part without a problem. Honestly text isn't really slow to begin with in this game in comparison to others, so changing the speed isn't really necessary.

Of course I'm getting this information from GameFAQs, so take it as you will. I'm pretty sure at least one was using a legit retail copy, but there's no way for me to confirm it.

Okay misunderstood..I dont mess with the message speed anyways...

what sucks though is now im 99.999999% sure that the game will be going back to gamefly monday..... Just got a phone call my mother lost her job after 35 years... with GM going bankrupt they do not have to pay for the parts that they owed and Dropped all of the contract of the place they were working at..

so now i probally going to dump off some of my video game collection to help them make ends meet and have to put a 100% stop to any buying ... Lucky i got my gamefly Paid to April 2010 with trade ins

Damn bugs! I've only put in a couple of hours on it and already had the game freeze on me! I had just got back to the starting castle, and unfortunately I lost about an hour's worth of playtime! I really want to like this game--it's definitely got that old-school vibe, but after freezing up and losing an hour's worth of levelling I felt like tossing my DS across the room--arrrgh!!
I'd definitely recommend it to those who enjoy the older style RPGs such as Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 5/6
I'd disagree. My favorite RPG's are of the SNES era, and I hated this game to death. It feels like Chrono Trigger's retarded step brother. The active time bar for fighting moves super slow that it made every fight feel like I was watching a loading bar, choose an option, and get to watch a loading bar some more.

Obviously since I had a problem with how they made the combat work in this game, the high encounter rate just made that even worse. Add on some other game bugs and I'm glad I only rented this.

Hmm, I'm not finding the ATB to be much of a problem. The high encounter rate is mildly annoying, but I'll reserve judgment on that until I've got more of the game played. Other than that first freeze up I'm enjoying it so far. The dialogue is great!

Oh god, THANK YOU! The manual sucks ass, and I couldn't figure that out for the life of me. I've got about 6 hours on it, and other than the one lock-up I'm liking it, and agree completely with your first assessment a couple pages back. The encounter rate is bugging me a little more, but only 'cos I'm in a dungeon cave and don't have any healing items left. Also, I missed the quest you were talking about to get some guy to make armor for you, darn!

I don't really think I like this game. About 6 hours in. It just seems like a chore to play thus far. The non-dungeon stuff is fine, if derivative, but the battle system really kind of drags it down when coupled with the high encounter rate. Games with high encounter rates simply shouldn't have random battles that take a relatively long time to complete and are slower than molasses. Compare how long this game's random encounters last compared to other games with high encounter rates to see what I mean. I'll try to stomach it at least until I get Devil Survivor in the mail in the hopes that I like it better.

I was waiting for the DOK impressions after the Suikoden flaws. I've had black sigil and devil survivor in my Amazon cart today and I think I'm going to go with devil survivor. Maybe I'll goozex Black Sigil eventually...
