Blogger says RE5 is racist LOL!!! reported by GameSpot
To be fair, the Japanese are certainly not exempt from racism. Specifically in regards to blacks, they still regard the "sambo" caricature as a humorous icon, they gave MMA fighter Kevin Randleman the nickname "Donkey Kong." Don't even need to get started on Koreans.
Yeah, the story of Hines Ward going back to Korea was enlightening. I guess it is harder for cultures to be sensitive to others when their culture is rather homogenous.

At any rate, the blogger is an idiot.
Who the hell is Maddox?
I'm glad to hear you don't know of him.

He became extremely popular on the internet a bit before the internet blogging boom of the 2000's.

I suppose he's "before your time".

I didn't know that about Ward. He seems like a great role model.

Shame, then, that he's a fucking Steeler.

They're just mad that 50 Cent Bulletproof sucked. But as a caucasion, white, American, whatever you want to call me, I AM DEEPLY OFFENDED by that game (50 Cent Bulletproof), not only does it portray white men as rich businessmen, it makes the black man out to be the ruling race of wherever it took place, able to pistol whip anyone whenever he pleases. Please look at this screenshot as it shows what I am talking about.

Don't judge it yourself as I have just made your opinion, 50 Cent Bulletproof IS FLAT OUT RACIST, and should be banned from all media, all music made by Mr Cent be toned down to remove all racist remarks, and all sponsors drop 50 Cent.

Am I crazy much???

Kind of ironic when you consider that Romero's iconic zombie movies are saturated with social commentary, yet we're now up to 6 pages of discussion on "just-for-thrills" Res Evil.

haha.
this made my day worth living.

This is just the beginning here. I would NOT be surprised if Capcom ultimately pulled an RE4 out of augmenting political pressure and scrapped the game halfway through, rebuilding a new premise with the engine already in place. I can't see how this isn't going to stir outrage. (EDIT: Or at least finds a half-assed narrative reason to shoehorn more 'diversification' of the Redfield-fodder into all of the game.)

From Page 1:

I knew someone was going to bitch when the main enemies of RE5 where going to be blacks... oh come on... Did RE4 cause this type of problem for Hispanics when it was released ??

Well, a.) who didn't see this coming and b.) if you could foresee the imminent bitching, then you have to realize that of all of the Race A-kills-Race B scenarios, this one easily is going to generate the most controversy. Why? Because it always does, and it probably always will.*

If there are other areas to the game that feature lily-white scientist zombies and/or white South Africans that have been zombified, why not allude to at least one portion in the trailer? This is not the best first impression they could have made in terms of the scenario (but from a graphical standpoint, they took it upper deck, admittedly).

*--Hey, Jar Jar got the most flak back in '99, even if the Neimoidians had "Yellow Peril" accents that were five times more indisputable!
While the term "African american" is the dumbest euphemism in the history of the world (along with asian-american, and pretty much any *insert race here*-american thing ever, for many reasons... none of which were mentioned by maddox), Maddox proves he is a complete moron in that post. Why?

Here we see what a complete abject moron Maddox truly is.

Black people only come from Africa, stupid. You know the black people in America? They originally came from AFRICA, not AMERICA. You know the black people in Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad? Guess fucking what, Maddox, THEY CAME FROM AFRICA.

America wasn't the only country enslaving Africans (and guess what else: the hispanic people in latin america? They came from fucking SPAIN, not South/Central America)

Fact: black people only come from Africa.

this actually slightly depends on your definition of "black", most people don't include indians (like, people from India) in their definition of "black", or Aborigines (native australians), mostly because, besides their skin colour, they look nothing like "blacks".

Once again: Maddox is a dumbass.

I am making no generalization about AFRICA by stating that someone is AFRICAN. In case you're too stupid to understand how the english language functions, let's carry out Maddox's logic:

I can easily say someone is African by looking at them. If they are black: then they have ancestry in Africa. Period. I'm not saying anything about egyptians (which are the only people I can think of in Africa who aren't black... unless you count the DUTCH people in south-africa [and, as you might guess, Holland isn't in africa, so the white people maddox is reffering to that LIVE in Africa, are not racially african])

Also, though I'm not sure about the history of the egyptian people, it's VERY VERY VERY likely they didn't originate in Egypt, in fact, they likely didn't originate in Africa at all: probably someone around Meditteranian Europe or the middle east.
Sort of true. I guess his point was is not everyone today came striaght from Africa, they could have came from Cuba via Africa which would make them African-Carribean-American. Either way, I think your reading WAY Too much into his post.

I'm know Spain has many people from the Middle East and Africa - should they have been zombified in RE4 too?

Geez, pretty soon every piece of entertainment is going to look like that ubiquitous "corporate diversity" poster.

What I love is that, as long as you are killing/enslaving/whatever to WHITE MALES, no one screams very loudly. There are only issues when it isn't white guys.

Yet, if you don't have black heroes, etc, people complain.

This is just so stupid. When will we get to a point in society where one race of people can shoot another race of people in a videogame and have no one care about the race (and only complain about the violence being aimed at children).

I have a solution-- in every group of black zombies, there should be a quota of at least 4 other races/ethnicities/nationalities represented. Sure, it'll look a little weird to see a white guy, indian guy, japanese guy, and new zealander running around with a pack of black zombies in a remote African village, but hey, at least Chris will be an equal opportunity killer.

oh, and Chris should undergo a race-change so that he's black and irish.
This is stupid. They're ZOMBIES. Damn it, the black community is always so sensitive to this shit.
Most people are content to simply live their lives and be a productive member of society. And then there are a select few who sit around waiting and watching for something to offend them so that they can holler, "I'm a victim!!" But that isn't just in the black community, that's every-friggen-where.

And sadly, it detracts from when there is a serious issue or racism or sexism.
Nobody's still been able to tell me where the game takes place. I've read Africa, I've read Raccoon City, and some of the screenshots have a Haiti/Caribbean US look to them.
First thing I thought when I saw the movie was Haiti. I'm sticking to that until someone proves otherwise.
...and? Warner Bros no longer plays or releases the "Bugs Bunny versus the Japs" World War II cartoons. White folks don't have such caricatures compared to the slant-eyed "Jap" or the ink-black "Sambo" and "Mammy" images.

It's our history of racism and out ancestor's history of racism. We don't need or want reminders of that.

Games have had changes before: Mega Man: Powered Up featured a boss called "Oil Man," which had those Sambo-like features as well. He was made purple before coming over to the US. Did it ruin the game at all?
But Sugar, these skins and character models are drop-dead gorgeous. Their color, facial structure, it's all absolutely beautiful.

Capcom didn't throw together genera-models and then used a palatte-swap on their skin tones like Mattel still does on some of it's Barbies. In fact that sort of disregard for differences bothers me, where realist representations do not.

And I really would hate for these character models to be scrapped for more bland white-guy molds. Don't we have enough of those in games as it is?

Hey, Norberg went from being a doofy Jewish dude in Police Squad! (original tv series) to OJ Simpson...

Just some random things I want to state:
African descent = black
Indian = brown
even though there are indians darker than a black person
While Egypt is geographically in Africa, it's considered part of the middle east
-I know it's a joke, but how could 50 cent bulletproof count towards the argument when it was a liscenced game?
-GTA San Andreas having a black character is the equvilant of having a black actor as the lead character in a block buster movie.

Regardless of how some people may say the game MAY be racist, they should keep the setting regardless. I think the Zombie Genocide achievment in Dead Rising was more offensive IMO (even thought I have it)

What about just adding a hot interracial love scene. It worked for Chuck Heston in "Omega Man"
http://shoopdawhoop.org/img/Thatsracistshoop.gif

Wow... three pages of posts and I'm the first to shoop? Damn...

The real racist here is the journalist. Black people aren't superior to white people. White people aren't superior to black people. Nobody is fucking superior to anybody. Everyone should be treated with the same amount of respect, no matter who the fuck you are. Unless you're Jack Thompson or some alarmist media $$$$$$ like this bitch.

When you call attention to Resident Evil 5 because it's some American in an African village shooting up people that are trying to kill him, you're keeping racism alive. Honestly, did anyone really think "Wow, that's racist, Chris Redfield is shooting black people" when they saw the trailer? Hell no! We thought, "fuck that game looks fun! I want it now!"
dude, you made my points!

the word racists never occured to me until i read this thread...

seriously, i didn't see it coming (racisim) at all... All i got from the trailer was, "hot damn, that's one scary mother fucker game." The zombies are much quicker, damn!

guinaevere, you words were very soothing, thanks :)

Ooooooh, that's Maddox. I've been to his page before but not recently. He's certainly not "before my time" but other than his hilarious animation of Sony shitting on a crowd of fans, not much there to see.

When I saw the very first trailer, it was only a white guy in the middle of some abandonded desert bazaar with a gun, and I'm thinking hoo boy they're setting it in the Middle East?!?

Little did I know the controversy was about to get even hotter :whistle2:o

As soon as I saw the trailer I thought to myself, some fucking idiot on the interwebs is going to start the racism shit. Low and behold not a week later, some fucking idiot on the interwebs said RE5 was racist. I am so sick of hearing about games being racist, people need to shut the fuck up about it, the game is not being racist so just shut the fuck up about it. Get the fuck over yourself and quit trying to start shit over nothing. If you really think that was Capcom intention was for RE5 to be racist then you really need some help.
