Blu-ray Discussion Thread - The One and Only
http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=4881

Quite possibly some of the greatest bluray news ever, short of complete Halloween and Friday the 13th boxsets (which will never happen). I mean, we all knew it was coming, but now there's a solid release date with complete features. $97 preorder on amazon, don't shit your pants just yet, I'm sure it will come down before release, my guess is $60-75.

http://www.amazon.com/Alien-Anthology-Blu-ray/dp/B001AQO3QA
Wow. I'm impressed that they're doing pretty much the complete contents of the Quadriology with the theatrical cut / directors or special cut of the movies. Points for them.

Another one that I would pre-order right now, though I'd have to wait and see if they have the PQ and AQ to back it up for a BR release. I can only hope so.
Yes, Incredibles was merchandised quite a bit when it was released.

BUT

It didn't 'take', so to speak.

Cars is an evergreen and gender neutral franchise, and still moves A LOT of merchandise.
This is it in a nutshell. The merchandising for Cars is still going strong to this day. Hell, there was a Cars videogame across all systems that came out last year.

Personally, I thought Cars was overlong and slow, while The Incredibles is my favorite Pixar movie. What can ya' do?

"Criterion will release Wes Anderson's "The Darjeeling Limited", Stanley Kubrick's "Paths Of Glory", Ingmar Bergman's "The Magician", Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" and Nobuhiko Obayashi's "House" on Blu-ray this October…"

Don't know if everyone knew all these... I had read here about "Seven Samurai", but I'm really looking forward to "Darjeeling Limited"... I thought that movie was great.
Finding Nemo, not The Incredibles?

#-o
Well, in Nemo's defense, it should look out-fucking-standing with it's color palette.

But yes. Incredibles on Blu is sorely needed.

I didn't want to bump my Grindhouse thread but the Amazon page for it was updated.

Together for the first time the Rodriguez/Tarantino Double Feature GRINDHOUSE is back and better than ever! These rip-roaring and adrenaline-pumping films are now featured in the original theatrical exhibition format. Loaded with over 2 hours of bonus content, including the fan favorite "Rodriguez's 10 Minute Cooking School", this 2-disc Blu-Ray will deliver a new experience like never before!

fucking awesome.

Can't believe I'm going to get it for $13.99

^This package was a promo item Panasonic mailed to folks who filled out the rebate form when they purchased a Viera 3D plasma...

Why is it $400 bones with over 30 bids? = You got me, I have no idea.
What the-? Does it come with a BR player? I ordered Coraline 3D off Amazon for $12. :p
No you didn't.

You are getting the 'fake' 3D version that we have been watching on DVD/Blu-ray/VHS etc. for the past 25 years. The one above is REAL 3D that requires REAL 3D glasses (not cardboard ones), a 3D TV and a 3D BD Player. The above two discs are exclusive to Panasonic BD players, much like Monsters vs. Aliens is exclusive to Samsung. You can't buy them individually (yet).

(You may know the above, but a lot of other people still don't get it. I've never seen so much confusion on 'fake' 3D and 'real' 3D)

Don't worry...soon the normal editions will be discontinued and if you want to buy Coraline or any of the above films, the 3D version will be the only one available at retail - for an inflated cost. Just wait to you guys hear what they are doing to one of the Top Box office movies of all time...
Avatar?
Sorry, Catalog release.

Avatar will get a 3D BD release as well. Likely around the same time as the catalog title.

I tend to think older catalog titles are going to go the 'theater re-release' route long before they come to Blu. Like Star Wars or Beauty and the Beast are.
Talk about random things showing up in one's Amazon Gold Box:

Rocky Horror Picture Show on BluRay. :whistle2:s

No release date listed, and the only thing I can find on quick Google searching doesn't show any release date either.

Same situation for Romeo + Juliet:

http://www.amazon.com/Romeo-and-Juliet-Blu-ray/dp/B001AQT0ZO/
Yup, mine had Rocky Horror too. On the plus side, it has Psycho for 18.99 so I snagged that.

Oct/Nov. Oct for Rocky for sure, unsure about Romeo or Moulan.

Romeo popped up in my Goldbox today so I nabbed it (for the GF).
Titanic?
I think I did hear that about Titanic going 3D in some fashion. Since it's a James Cameron movie, it wouldn't surprise me about that being true.

That would be it. The 2D BD has been delayed several times now, and a release with Avatar 3D is very likely. It will be one of the first 3D BD Catalog titles released on the format, and likely the only way to buy it (but you can still play the 2D version of it).

I think Christmas Carol is doing the right thing, having a 4-disc combo pack with DVD / 2D BR / Special Features BR / 3D BR, that way you're not "stuck" with buying it twice to get 2D and 3D.

can anyone suggest where i can find strict rules/compatability for NTSC-U/USA PS3 and playing certain bluray packs from amazon.uk?

thanks so much!
some of those packs are crazy $!

You will be forced. Word around the water cooler is that it will be a 3D/2D release and that's it. So you can watch it in 2D, you just gotta pay a higher price for it.

From what someone else said that is heavily involved in 3D, the 4 disc set will have 2, 2D discs. The first being 2D only, and the second a 3D/2D disc. Why? Who know. Disney wants the 'value' to be there since the MSRP is $49.99.

PS3 can't play 1050i content. Sometimes the discs force 1050i trailers which will lock up your PS3 (or any Sony BD player). There is a list floating out on the internet about what discs do work...
 @ studio greed getting more people to sit out :br: and towards streaming content.
It is what it is. Studios will feel the pain when they turn off all these young people from buying who will suddenly find out what Torrent means.

Not what I meant.

I meant that with more expensive 3D/2D :br:, more people will find that discs aren't important and go towards streaming content.

But since the studios are lazy and stupid, they'll get there too slowly(already might be too late) to monetize it.

Apparently Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is being rereleased on Tuesday. Fry's has it in their add today. No price given, just "low price guaranteed".
Whoa, that screenshot is like night and day difference.
How could a studio fuck up a transfer that bad for this big a title? it makes absolutely no sense and worries me that tons of Blu-Rays could look much better.

I'm pumped for October. Some decent horror movies coming out. Blair Witch (handicams in HD...guessing that won't be a demo disc), High Tension (finally!), and both Open Water movies.

Only thing is the latter three are not exactly prime material for Halloween movie marathons. Like Jaws, Open Water are summer movies. Even Texas Chainsaw Massacre I would only watch in summertime.
And you'd kick yourself if you did get it for $10 and they never did a replacement plan.

The price sometimes for the early adopter.
Eh, I got it for $10, and I wasn't kicking myself.

I wonder what the one scene that it seemed like people had the biggest problem with looks like in the new BluRay of Gladiator. I wonder if you will be able to see the arrows flying through the sky or if they have been DNRed out like the last one.

Another one in the "let's hope they don't fuck up the transfer" department, Space: 1999 - Season 1:

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=4910

One of my favorite scifi TV series over the years and the DVDs have been ridiculously expensive, except if you import them from the UK.

Supposedly, it's a complete restoration, though as it was shot on 35mm, it should be clean and nice. Assuming it doesn't get run over by the DNR bus.

Also, ran across this on The Digital Bits for today:
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents

Shows a pic of the "CE" version of the Alien BR set, and it looks pretty  worthy. Not available for pre-order anywhere else except from Fox, and it gives a link for the pre-order. Also talks about the PQ on the Alien movies, and they look great. Further talk about the Gladiator re-do, and that it looks amazing.

I recieved The Fall today from Blockbuster Online.

Even though the movie isn't quite the visual masterpiece hype may want you to think it is (The Cell is better), it does look great in motion and is a good movie.
