Bruno Sammartino's wrestling topic
Nah the main event was good I've seen way worse this year.
Didn't stick around for the ME

From what a gathered, it was Hardy & someone vs Orton & someone else, with Hardy scoring the pinfall on Orton. That sounds pretty awesome, but doesn't make up for the rest of a really shitty night.

It was certainly the worst Raw I've see all year and I would have been absolutely livid if I had paid good money to see it Live (not to mention braving the elements just to make it to the arena).
Well, I guess I was right. Tazz is most likely taking over JBL position as SD commentator, since JBL is start wrestling again on Raw.

As for Raw, holy crap that was a boring show. Even the main event(which they overhyped) was mediocre at best. The JBL/Y2J promo was the best thing last night.
Indeed. I played UT3 for a minute, turned on Raw, was revising a paper, and looked up at one point to see Hardy pinning whoever he pinned last night. I looked at the clock and said to myself "11:05, huh? I guess it's over."

That's what I remember from Raw last night.

I really, really enjoyed JBL's promo. And that's saying a lot, because I hate JBL. I thought Vince's angle was a fresh change, I was entertained for a little while.

I was a bit shocked at how much they didn't talk about the PPV, though. They even opened the show with clips from the 15th anniversary show, rather than PPV highlights.

Well, next week's show isn't about angles (save one, I suppose), and I don't know if the new year's eve Raw will be pretaped also.

Regardless, ratings will be in the shitter for the next two Mondays, so I can see why they held off pushing the Royal Rumble. They won't have much time to prepare after that, though. Maybe use the internet/wwe.com to buildup the PPV in the interim?
What's the deal, is it part of the news or is MCW getting a local time slot?
Oh sorry about that.. It's not an actual MCW show, just the cover story on the news... doh. :wall:
The follow-up is key here - I hope WWE does a better job with this than TNA did with Lethal going over Angle, which led to Lethal losing to Daniels immediately, then looking like a jobber against Team 3D. The win over Angle ended up only meaning something that night, as TNA botched everything else after it.
You were right...even though lethal winning over angle was a bigger shock it proved to be no match for hardy over hhh as it led to hardy over orton last night...(which shouldn't of happened imo)

I had a feeling hardy would become wwe champ at the ppv..not a long term one, but a champ nonetheless - don't really know about that now as he already defeated orton

before i forget about last night...they give kelly kelly the nickname "wood giver"

Raw got a 3.48 cable rating, which is about what was expected.

Here's a funny blurb about Kennedy trying to explain his usage of steroids -
- Mr. Kennedy continues to look dismissal in the media regarding steroid use in pro wrestling. In an interview with the Charleston Post-Courier, Kennedy admitted to being linked the Signature Pharmacy investigation, and recently being suspended by WWE. Kennedy used the excuse of “I had a legitimate medical reason to have it (steroids).” In the interview, the legitimate excuse Kennedy refers to is his 2005 torn lat injury. The problem for Kennedy is that he was still receiving packages as of February 2007, the month the pharmacy was raided.
Kennedy really just needs to shut up and stop doing interviews, as he just sounds worse and worse with each passing one.

It's still a bit too early to tell what WWE's doing with Hardy, as his win last night would seem to indicate that he'll be losing at the PPV (in keeping with tradition that if a champion is pinned before his title match, he'll win the title match), but I could see WWE giving the belt to Hardy very briefly just to get it away from Orton and possibly just cut their losses with his title reign, as it's been a disaster from the beginning.

MVP vs. Punk... YES! This should be quite a good match IF it's given time and they don't do a fuck finish for it, which they could be tempted to do with it being a champion vs. champion match (with 1 day of build, oy). I'm hoping this match leads to either MVP going after the ECW (world) title, or Punk going after the U.S. belt at some point (hopefully not until after Matt wins it), or at least results in Punk getting more appearances on SD.

wow.. my wwe shopzone order arrived.. i wasnt expecting any of this till after xmas.. i thought most of this stuff hadnt been released either

ofcourse they include two autographs on a generic raw printout.. i cant even tell who they are from

So I caved in and bought the WCCW DVD set. It's really, really depressing. I mean, the Hart family has had some hard times (cue Big Boss Man) but holy crap did the Von Erichs get it worse.

Possibly the most talented son dies unexpectedly, the good-looking one gets a pity 2 week NWA title reign, Mike Von Erich almost dies as a result of routine surgery because of a separated shoulder and then kills himself because he can't live up to the other brothers and so on. It's tough to watch.

That being said, there's a hilarious anecdote by Kevin Von Erich about wrestling in Japan with a concussion. Overall a good look at a part of wrestling history that I personally knew very little about having grown up in San Diego and being a WWF kid.
That sure looks like the pictures of him, although missing his cute lil' wristbands and bows in his hair.
I know, I saw him and thought NOOO! Busta must have the wristbands.
Actually, on second thought, that guy didn't look like Busta at all. I don't think that was him.
You don't say.. Are you sure?
Holy shit, Busta Uppa is about to job to Shelton.
... WHAT????? I had this guy on my friend list for awhile on Xbox Live, I forget when we met. Seriously?
You don't say.. Are you sure?
90% sure. Busta doesn't have red chops to the best of my knowledge.

Go check out the CAG Family Album thread, and you'll see lotsa pics of him. I can almost guarantee it wasn't.

To be fair, he probably doesn't deserve to beat Shelton yet ;) .

I caught the end of ECW. I was enjoying the Punk/MVP match until it ended in DQ. An ECW main event ended in a DQ and it wasn't because they had a heel referee. My fuzzy WWE glow from last weeks RAW has been extinguished.

Punk/MVP was great until the crap finish, and then Chavo attacking Punk added just a bit more WTF to the crappy end of an actually good match.

so far so good on the raw 35th an. dvd

Chavo did a run-in on ECW to start a feud with Punk? Christ a'mighty, I sure am glad my tivo picked up new episodes of "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares."

Chavo/Punk feud? Who was it a few weeks back claiming WWE thought highly enough of him such that he was actually giving a "rub" to Miz/BDV/Morrison?
To be fair, he probably doesn't deserve to beat Shelton yet ;) .

Why Vince or perhaps Dusty, wants to continue pissing on ECW is beyond me. I wish they'd change the damn name. Call it Sci-Fi Championship Wrestling or something equally as cookie-cutter. No ECW match should ever end in a DQ. Let alone the number of title matches and main events that have. Why hasn't Cody been dumped on ECW yet?

Overall, that was a good show. The opener had a lot more action than I expected and they did a fine job of building up Yang and Moore as tag title contenders. MVP-Punk had more mat wrestling than I expected, it looked good, and I dug the ending with MVP being DQed for kicking too much ass in the corner. They did a good enough job with the match that not only didn't I feel cheated, but I was still left wanting to see them have a match. Dykstra dominating the elfen Nunzio was a blast, and I'm glad they're back to doing something with Dykstra after having him tread water forever on SD.

Chavo's return did nothing for me. The crowd reacted with apathy, and his attack looked less like "THE MOST DELIBERATE THREE AMIGOS EVER" and more like a guy doing three suplexes very slowly. At least the frog splash looked decent.

Shelton continues to rule on ECW, and I love that they're now giving him guys to destroy as opposed to having him be the guy being destroyed. They've gotten a number of new moves over for him (running flatliner, turnbuckle powerbomb, running boot to the head), which is good, and I think a slow build for Shelton might work as they do have to shake off years of him being used as a low-mid level guy.

Halo05, have you seen Heroes of World Class? If so, how does WWE's WCCW effort compared to Brian Harrison's? I've read complaints about the WWE version of the story (or rather, the Kevin Von Erich version) being told, thus taking out much of the drama, which was told quite thoroughly in the Heroes documentary, which covered the non-Von Erich deaths of "The Gentleman" Chris Adams, "The Handsome Half-Breed" Gino Hernandez, and Bruiser Brody in grizzly detail (especially Brody's, which inspired a great deal of rage in Gary Hart when he told how Brody was killed).

WWE legally cannot change the name of "ECW" - they've committed to producing an ECW-named wrestling show for Sci-Fi, and the original ECW had DQs, just not many... ever. That isn't just what ECW was all about though, as the 'new' ECW keeps the original ECW's spirit of giving older wrestlers and newer ones chances, while also showcasing great wrestling on a fairly regular basis alive.

I haven't seen the "Heroes of World Class" documentary so I can't really compare it to the "Triumph and Tragedy" one I just watched.

The WWE one does touch on Gino Hernandez' death in a fair amount of detail. Gary Hart in particular talks for awhile about how Gino had personal demons that he (Gary Hart) tried to exorcise but was ultimately unsuccessful. He still blames himself for Gino Hernandez' death.

Nothing about the deaths of Chris Adams or Brody was mentioned in the documentary although to be fair, neither death had much to do with WCCW.

True, but Adams was a major player in WCCW at one point, while Brody was a major 'guest star'-type draw for them, like Flair, but not QUITE at that level. I'm glad Gino got some play in a WWE DVD release - his act was basically the same one Tully used as a Horseman, which is pretty fitting since they were partners as the Dynamic Duo in Joe Blanchard's Southwest Championship Wrestling group, formed a great team, lost the belts to Lem Denton and Tony Anthony (the Grapplers), then split up after the match when Tully turned on Gino and Gino whooped his ass, leading to a Hemisphere Arena match where Gino beat Tully after Ernie Shavers KOed Tully, and Gino beat him with a splash off the top because he couldn't hit his backwards elbow due to Tully's body positioning.

eroes of World Class is an incredible documentary, and the two-disc version that got a national release is a must-buy - without it, WWE definitely wouldn't have put this DVD out, which is one reason I love the tag line for the ad stating that the story of te company has NEVER BEEN TOLD, when it's been told in documentaries numerous times both via Heroes of World Class and in Of Birth and Blood, which I'm pretty sure I have on DVD via its creator putting on rapidshare and letting DVDVR posters download it. I'll look for it tomorrow and post it if I find it the disc with it on there.

LOL... I can officially verify that I did not wrestle Shelton Benjamin :p

What was the guy billed as? I'm curious to see this ECW guy that I supposedly resemble. I just moved into an apartment and I got no cable connection yet, so I'm a bit out of the loop with TV wrestling other than what I read online.

The Heroes video was pretty good in terms of its honesty, which I don't think any of us would expect from the WWE version of the story. They're more than happy to point out each and every fault of the wrestling industry, save one - the consistent and uninterrupted role drugs have played in wrestling.

From what I gleaned from the Michael Hayes promo on Smackdown the other week (a VASTLY overrated segment, as I'd seen better acting and banter on "Saved By the Bell" - their attempts at verbal comebacks were fucking EXCRUCIATING to watch; surprising, given how awesome Hayes was on the mic), though, the WWE video does tell the story of drug abuse in WCCW. Then again, since Halo mentions how David Von Erich's death was "mysterious," perhaps they did candycoat a good portion of the drug aspect of WCCW.

Heroes was good for honesty, but the production/direction was abhorrent. There's a certain finesse for putting together a story where the players tell it themselves (I thought Steven Blush's book "American Hardcore" did so amazingly well). Set up the scenes, and get out of the way - the people who were there to see it are talkin'.

But Heroes never set up the scene for you. The problem with the Heroes video is that is was produced in a way that it knew it would only sell to the hardcore fan who knew everything about WCCW already - so you could follow along. As someone who did watch WCCW on ESPN years and years ago, I knew a little bit about it, but not enough to really follow along. The "price of entry" for this video is too steep, and it gets lost that way. It's put together such that it admits it only intends to preach to the choir, and not seek new converts.

Seeing the sportatorium being torn down was some pretty monumental footage, though. That, and Gary Hart's one remaining tooth was particularly annoying. Yuck. But that's just being petty on my part.

I'm looking forward to seeing the WWE video, primarily for the fact that it will have matches on it, I'm sure. Heroes is a "2-disc" set, but that second disc is as useless as a fart from Aunt Milly. A bunch of self-aggrandizing internet motherfuckers in an audio circle jerk. What a fuckin' waste.

I ain't shavin' my head though! Obscure imaginary championship fantasy booking's loss, I suppose.
Compared with who? Tazz?

Well yeah. And if the guy in the middle ain't a dead ringer for Shelton, then I don't know who is.

How tall are you, Busta? You're slouching a bit (and reppin', too, apparently), but appear to be eye level with the second row of locks - meaning you're a good 5 inches taller than Tazz.

EDIT: On a serious note, though I despise black jeans (my black utilikilt doesn't count), those give you a far better look than the bike shorts.

Heroes' production definitely could have used some improvements (there is NO reason the typos in it couldn't have been fixed up), it has a lot of heart behind it, and the passion involved in creating it is clear when you listen to the audio interviews on the second disc, which were fine, but I wish the F4W interview with him was used as well, and more WCCW match footage would have helped the second disc, as opposed to just having the alternate intro to the documentary.

Perhaps WWE buying the rights to the footage nixed the ability to put any full matches on there, but it definitely hurts the set a bit - especially since Kerry Von Erich-Flair where Kerry won the belt isn't shown in full on either set (at least I don't recall seeing it on the WWE WCCW match listing).

Edit - According to some DVDVR folks, Shelton's opponent was Collin Olsen from Chikara. Also, I found the disc with Of Birth and Blood, which I'm uploading now to sendspace. It should all be up within a couple of hours.

I haven't watched any of disc 2 yet but here's the match listing according to the paper inside the case. Any typos are WWE's, not mine.

Two-out-of-Three Falls

Bruiser Brody vs. Abdullah the Butcher

------------------------------------------

So yup, no Kerry Von Erich NWA World Title win. Very odd omission.

Thanks for that match lineup, while it confirms that KVE-Flair with the Kerry title win isn't on there, it also shows Brody vs. Abby on a WWE DVD, something I never thought I'd see, although it seems quite wrong to have Abby vs. Brody in a cage in DVD quality and NOT one of the most historic matches in WCCW history. I guess it leaves room for a second, match-only WCCW set, but I doubt WWE will ever actually make one - they haven't even made a second set for Flair yet.

So I'm under that 6' mark, but I don't stick out like a sore thumb in a tag match or anything like that.

Heh I switched to black pants and braids when I turned heel. As a face I was kickin' a gimmick that was part "fun-loving DJ" and part "regular guy," so I was told to stick with the normal shorts. It was a convenient gimmick, to say the least.

Despite what little I know, "do as your told" seems to be rule #1 in pro wrestling, until you're at a point where you can ignore it - which is admittedly very few.

5'9" is probably average - Jericho is 5'10", and I don't know Guerrero and Benoit's heights, but they were notably shorter than myself - and if I say I'm 5'11", I'm stretching the truth (or rounding up).

I saw the JBL/Y2J promo on youtube. It was pretty good. You guys are right though. Jericho needs to drop the 7th grade jokes and become somewhat serious.

--We're sad to report the death of Karen Helms, the mother of WWE star Gregory Shane Helms, who passed away over the weekend. I think he'd chalk this up as a horrible year for him. If you would like to send a sympathy card you can to Gregory Shane Helms, P.O. Box 746, Wendell, NC 27591 Please at this time in particular, don't give wrestling fans a bad name by abusing this address being out there.
I might send him a card, or at least post some condolences on his Myspace. Hopefully '08 treats him better than '07 did, as he seems like a genuinely good human being.
