CAG Beer Drinkers Unite! Beer Snobs and Cheap Ass Drunks Welcome!

Anyone else stuck inside because of the blizzard? At least my wife can't complain because I'm drinking beer and watching college ball all day.

Not in Florida my friend. Great weather and looking forward to having a few beers for tomarrows SuperBowl. Heck, I might be bad and have a couple tonight.

So I got out of the house as soon as the roads cleared and headed to my favorite bar for some hoops and beer. Tried that Dogfish IBA that's been vexing me so and I have to agree with dmaul. It's more of a Newcastle on steroids. The hops bite but it definately has more caramel overtones now that I tasted it with a clean palate.

Picked up a sixer of New Belgium's Mighty Arrow on the way home. It's a pale ale that's VERY similar to Sierra Nevada It tastes like it has less hops and maybe a hint of apricot. Definately clean but I'm not sure if it's worth $10 a sixer compared to $14 for a 12 pack of Sierra Nevada.

I like alot of New Belgium's beers but I agree with dmaul's earlier statement that there are many other beers (like Sierra Nevada, Blue Moon, and Sam Adams) that are cheaper and easier to find locally.

I saw that Mighty Arrow at Publix and almost grabbed it--but they didn't have any cold. Moot since I've been home a few hours and haven't opened a beer yet anyway.

Picked up a sixer of Terrapin Rye Pale Ale. I'm skeptical as I've not really dug any of their beers yet, but like to try all the offerings from the local breweries. It was either that or Sweetwater 420 which is just ok--and I had one on tap with dinner last night or Sam Adams Noble Pils which I was more skeptical of.

Pretty crummy beer selection--was hoping they'd have some of the Sweetwater Happy Ending as I just finished my 2nd sixer of that (and had bought it at another Publix) but no go.

Yeah, the oaked Bastard is great.

The Terrapin Rye Pale Ale was dissapointing as expected. Pretty bland. Would be an ok beer for a hot summer day I guess as it's pretty crisp/refreshing. Shitty beer to buy in the winter though.

Had an Anderson Valley Hop Ottin' IPA last night. Really neat beer. West coast - very different from all these sweeter and uh citrus-ier IPAs I've been drinking lately. Had two - 7% ABV - nice, pleasant buzz.

Also picked up some Bell's Sparkling Ale - their tripel - can't seem to find it on their website anymore though!?! Wondering how it'll compare to La Fin Du Monde.

Finally made another trip to the beer store.

Grabbed:

Scaldis Noel--one of the Belgian winter/x-mas beers I haven't tried. Having it currently. Very good, nice and spicy up front, but sweet in the finish.

Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel! Corne Du Diable--their IPA. Looking forward to it (will probably have it next tonight). All of Dieu Du Ciel's stuff I've had has been pretty interesting.

6 Pack of Founder's Centennial IPA
4 Pack of Founder's Imperial Stout (loved it when I had it the first time a couple weeks ago, couldn't pass it up).

Has anyone had a bourbon barrel beer yet? O'Dell's makes a fantastic one called Bourbon Barrel Stout. Best beer i've had in a while.

Yeah, Imperial Stouts are easily my favorite type of beer. I love IPAs as well, especially a good double IPA. Probably my 2nd favorite type of beer.

Those are mostly all I drink, along with the occasional barleywine. I always want full flavor so I stay away from most lagers, pilsners and porters.

I just had some beer last night I thought was quite tasty. Old Speckled Hen, I had never had it, as I mostly just buy Stouts, Trippels and other dark "heavy" beers.

I was actually really pleased with it, it reminded me of an ESB I had a while back, anyone else ever had it?

It was tasty, I definitely intend to pick up some more. I wish I could remember the name of the ESB it reminded me of, but I can't. It's a shame liqour stores here are closed on Sunday, now I want some good beer, my some left hand milk stout.

The Founder's Centennial IPA is pretty dissappointing. I've liked all their other stuff I've tried, but this is pretty lacking for an IPA.

Not very hoppy, pretty bland but with a funky bitter in the aftertaste. Not the citrusy bitter of an East Coast style IPA nor the Piney bitter of a west coast. Just odd.

just saw this on digg. some of the things are al ittle odd. old english 800 has 6 medals? wtf.

Had my second beer from The Duck-Rabbit Brewery up in NC. It was their milk stout. Wasn't real impressed. Seemed like way too much carbonation. Smelled real nice with caramel and coffee. Taste wasn't so great though - too carbonated and was a bit thin/watery. Just didn't do much for me.

Going to bust open a bottle of the Westmalle Trappist Dubbel tonight. Can't wait.

I think I'm going to get a bomber of Avery's Maharaja, a 10.25% Double IPA, for this weekend.

Clipper City has several really good beers at the moment. Might be regional (based out of Baltimore, MD)... but if you can get your hands on some, I can assure you that you won't be disappointed.

That's very good. It's really, really hoppy though, so be ware if you're not a hop head.

They distribute pretty widely. I drank a good bit of their stuff while in the DC Baltimore area, and still find a lot of it down here in Atlanta.

Especially their Mutiny Fleet, the new bomber series of 22oz beers they've had out for a while. I've never been super impressed with any of their stuff though. It's not bad at all, but just always fell in the not great, but decent category for me. I drank a good bit of it before moving as there stuff was one of the better offerings the liquor store down the street from my place would carry, so I'd pick some up when I didn't feel like driving 20-30 minutes to a good beer store.

I will say the Mutiny Fleet stuff is much better than their standard offerings. The Big DIPA double IPA was solid, as was the Prosit! Imperial Octoberfest. I didn't care for the pumkin ale they put out much though.

Of their regular line up, the Heavy Seas Hang Ten is quite good, and the Peg Leg is ok for a cheaper imperial stout. I don't care for any of the beers under the Clipper City name really, just those couple of Heavy Seas offerings (the others are all ok as well) and the Mutiny Fleet.
That's very good. It's really, really hoppy though, so be ware if you're not a hop head.
That's why I'm getting it (and because BA reviews have said that it's a citrusy IPA, which I tend to like--especially since Spring's here). :)

Hmm, I was recalling it as being a more piney IPA. Though it's been about a year since I had it, so I'm probably just mis-remembering.

Well, reading down a few more reviews, a few say only citrus, some talk only about the hoppy bitterness, and two say piney and citrusy.

Guess I'll see when I get it--I think I'll be happy either way.

Made a beer run on my way home.

Picked up:

6 pack of Terrapin Hopesecutioner
4 pack Founder's Old Curmudgean Ale
22oz Moylan's Old Blarney Barley Wine
22oz Heavy Seas Mutiny Fleet Holy Sheet Belgian Abbey Style Ale (odd they made this a Mutiny Fleet one, pretty sure it was in 12 oz bottles in year's past while the other MF limited runs have been new brews for clipper city.

Had a Hopsecutioner while grading some exams earlier. It's an alright IPA. Probably the best Terrapin brew I've had yet, which isn't saying much. The hops are a little odd being neither citrusy or piney, just kind of a non-descript type of bitter.

Having a Founders' Old Curmudgean ale now. It's damn good. Very similar to the North Coast Old Stock Ale. Just under 10% alc. and lots of sweet caramel malt flavor.

In addition to the Maharaja I'll be drinking tomorrow night, I have a 1.5 L bottle of St Paul's Double.

The liquor store had an outrageous sale where they were selling it for like $6.

last night i had ranger ipa from new belgium. quite good, not too hoppy, but hoppy enough. buffalo bills blueberry oatmeal stout. a classic stout with a hint of blueberries, it was good, but not my favorite stout. my gf really liked it, and she isnt big on stouts. and then finally i had 2008 alaskan smoked porter. this stuff was very good, smooth and rich, but it had a flavor i could just not put my finger on. very familiar. either way, i liked it a lot, too bad its $6 for a 22oz bottle or i would have bought more than one.

The Moylan's Barleywine was decent. Not great, but worth a go since it was only $3 something for the bomber.

The Holy Sheet is just ok--kind of odd for the Mutiny Fleet series as I'm pretty sure Clipper City put it out in 6 packs (or 4 packs) before, and the 22oz Mutiny Fleet series had been new brews up to this point.

I tried Three Floyds (Munster, IN) Alpha King on Saturday. It's a good western style IPA from a local brewery so I look forward to adding to my regular staples. It has good bite but doesn't overpower with hops like some other IPAs.

Haven't had a lot new lately.

Had a couple beers for the firs time last week or a bit more ago--the Rogue Santa's Private Reserve, which was ok. Bell's Porter which was decent as well. Otherwise, just some stuff I've had and posted about before.

I liked Bell's Porter.

I'm really looking forward to the spring ales that should be coming out in the next few weeks.

On a sidenote, anyone been to Octoberfest in Germany? I went when I lived there as a kid but, obviously it wouldn't measure up to a trip as an adult.

I'd love to go but most of my friends don't truly appreciate beer. To top it off, my girl doesn't even like beer.

Yeah I haven't had much new either. Same stuff lately - still really enjoying my Hopslam! I do have a founder red's rye pa in the fridge - looking forward to trying it as it gets good reviews on BA.

Our state/free the hops organization is pursuing a couple new things this year - the brewery modernization act to bring us into the 21st c. regarding breweries has passed the house and there is a separate group of homebrewers who just helped to pass a homebrew legalization in the senate. It was decided not to tackle container size (although EVERYONE wanted to) because it is an election year and their research showed there would be zero chance of it passing this year. Apparently there is a good chance for both of these bills this year.

I'm not too interested in homebrewing though - I had a friend who did it for 7-8 years up in TN and I just don't think I want to invest in it - and don't really have much space for it either. It would be great if it were legalized. The brewery bill would allow for breweries to have tasting rooms and restaurants and sell growlers (as of right now we can get what we call "ghetto growlers" which are half-gallon plastic jugs but only at a few package stores.) It would also make it MUCH easier to open a brewery - right now there are tons of crazy limitations for opening one.

It blows my mind every time I hear about it being illegal to homebrew in some states.

I can't think of even one reason why a law like that makes sense.

We still have dry counties in parts of the South. Not that big of a stretch to ban homebrewing considering the South's past with moonshine.

Two weeks ago, stopped by BEVMO in Torrance, CA and picked up 3 six packs of Christmas Beers and a German Christmas Beer bottle. Last week, stopped by BEVMO in Burbank and was told of NEW company-wide policy, for all stores: All Christmas Beers must be destroyed immediately and not sold at a discounted rate, in order to preserve shelf space for the new, spring seasonal beers that have been in storage until the Christmas Beers are sold.

I was dumbstruck. What chain, in their right mind, would turn down paying customers and make a little money instead of making ZERO profit and losing money? Guess it's all about overall profit and we, the customers who enjoy discounted seasonal beers lose out. This, I type, after getting discounted Christmas Beers ever since New Year's Day. :)

Picked up some Bell's IPA while I was out and about. It's not as hoppy as I'd like but it's still very good.

I might be coming around to eastern IPAs with this one. They're more complex than I give them credit for. The hops is there but it doesn't slam you like a western IPA.

I had a bottle of Dogfish Head's Midas Touch. Really, really tasty. It's rather surprising how strong the grape flavor comes through.

I just wish it weren't so damn expensive (my friend dropped almost $20 on a 4 pack).
I tried La Fin du Monde last Thursday. Unique apple sauce flavor was delicious.
If you like tripels, you should try Allagash's. I think it's my favorite of the style that I've had.

It's been on my short list for some time, I just can't seem to find a place that sells Allagash.
