Congratulations to the entire CAG community as we beat our goal of $40,000, raising a whopping $42,810! Thanks to all who participated including our great corporate sponsors Play-Asia, Telltale Games (Tales of Monkey Island), Capcom (Dark Void), and Blueberry Muffin Tops Cereal.

Original post
In 2008, CAGs raised over $32,000 (up from $27K in 2007) for Penny Arcade's Child's Play charity. This year, let's see if we can hit $40,000 before the year is through.

For every $5 donated via PayPal through the CAG ChipIn system, you will receive one entry into a raffle to win a $500 Amazon Gift Certificate or other great prizes! Last year, the CAG Community donated some really cool and generous prizes and I'm sure the tradition will continue this year. I expect the prize list to grow and grow until the very end of the fundraiser.

You must donate through the ChipIn system or your raffle entry will not register. Use any of the ChipIn links in this post or the widget below. Just click the "ChipIn" button to donate. Donations are accepted via PayPal and go directly to Child's Play. ChipIn tracks our donations as a group, but the money is immediately deposited into Child's Play's PayPal account.
Even though it says there are 4 hours left I can't donate through the little applet, guess I'll do it over at PA or something. Yay procrastination.
I noticed that as well. Odd that it says that there's still 3 hours left, though donations are closed.

Nice job on everyone's donations.

three hours left and I wanted to finally donate it but it won't let me :whistle2:(

had to wait for my paycheck to come through yesterday before I could

Yeah, I also had to wait for my paycheck to clear. Says I have two hours left, but won't let me donate. This sucks.

Glad the goal was reached, in any case. If there's any way for me to still get my donation in, please let me know.

I don't think you can donate as part of the CAG Fund, since I had the same situation last year, with it closing right when I wanted to donate.

I think it's set against Cheapy's clock in Tokyo, which is why it might be a little off at the moment.

I think if people still want to donate, they can donate to Child's Play directly on their website, http://www.childsplaycharity.org/, though it won't be part of the CAG Fund.

If your paypal email address is different from your CAG email how do you identify yourself as a contributor from CAG?

I honestly didnt think it would make 40k cause of the economy, but its nice to be positively surprised in the generosity of people now and then

People can still donate to Child's Play - just go to their site. The goal here has been met -- but there's a bigger picture, which is getting games to sick kids.

I believe - CheapyD raffles all the contributors by the paypal email they donated from, not CAGusernames, you don't have to be from cag to chipin to the CAGfund
Wait a minute, are our contributions tax deductible?
In most cases, no. Contributions made in exchange for a contest entry or some other type of reciprocity are usually not tax deductible.

As always, see your accountant for details. :)

Most of them ARE tax deductible. Look at state lotteries

However, if a prize were donated then that should be tax deductible. If an entry were given for the prize then only the $5 for the ticket would not be tax deductible. I'm not an accountant so don't tell the IRS that Clownzilla told you but I'm pretty sure I'm right on this:)
Most of them ARE tax deductible. Look at state lotteries
lol No, you've got the tax code a little mixed up there. State lotteries are not tax deductible as charitable contributions. The deduction that equates with lotteries is gambling, and you can only deduct your losses vs. your winnings. The IRS is extremely clear that purchasing raffle tickets cannot be deducted as a charitable contribution.

However, if you win, you do have to pay taxes based on the value of the items you win :applause: Go IRS!

They are deductible. That's the main reason you print a receipt. BUT, it usually doesn't effect your return unless it was a large amount or you have many deductions.

BTW, Way To Go CAGS!!! I love being part of a community that gives back!

it only matters if you itemize your deductions instead of taking the standard deduction for that anyway.

See a tax advisor or CPA for more info of course.

Actaully, that's not right. As someone else pointed out, it'll only affect those who exceed the standard deduction anyways. Regarding promotions : If, for example, you went to a charity auction and bought a mercedes for $40,000, you could only deduct the portion of your bid ABOVE the MRSP of the car (while the donor of the car may deduct the car's full value). In this case, if you want to be technichal, the recipient of the Amazon GC could only deduct contributions above $300 (yeah like that would ever happen). If that $300 gift card came directly from Cheapy, he could deduct it (at least he could in the US). I'd say in this case, the winner probably shouldn't deduct his contribution, but it might be hard for the IRS to figure that one out anyway.

BTW: Do we know the contest winners yet?
You guys must have donated a fortune if you're wondering about tax deductible on this ;)
If you itemize then you should always include your charitable donations. Every little bit helps, and make sure you have records.

*sigh* I never post anything I can't back up ... check IRS Publication 526 - page two unequivocally states that charitable contributions for raffles are NOT tax deductible - it's illegal to try. Not only that, you cannot deduct the contributions of items because they were given to CAG to hold the raffle, not directly donated to Child's Play. Now, could you get away with it? For a couple hundred, probably - but, if you get audited, you'll lose completely.

In case anyone is interested in the taxes you'll have to pay should you win any prizes, you can find it spelled out plainly here in IRS Notice 1340.

no ones interested in that. Keep that to yourself
:p

My receipt says that my donation was to the Child's Play Charity even though it was through the CAG widget. The "raffle" portion is from a secondary organization (CAG). As you stated you can't deduct any item donated to CAG, but for similar reasons you can deduct the donation (it went directly to Child's Play which was not conducting a raffle).

If you go to the Charity website and look at the FAQ you get this:

Q. Since this is a charity donation I can deduct it from my taxes, right?
A. Each hospital’s charity tax ID number is included in the information section on its wish list. Use your confirmation email as a receipt. If you are making a cash donation, Child’s Play’s own tax ID number is 20-3584556. If you have any questions about how this works, please ask your tax advisor.
When will winners be announced?
They already have been announced... after all it is the children of Child's Play that won... ;)

Way to hit the goal. I'm happy for all those kids who will have something to play with and I'm happy to see so many good people willing to chip in. Excellent.

It isn't hard to contribute considering all the cash saved on games from this site. Just think if everyone kept a record of all they saved from this site in a year and donated half.

yup. i would have probably donated more money than i spent on everyone in my family for christmas gifts in that case.

nice work though guys. it's nice to see some good done from this community.

I wonder at what kind of prices Child's Play orders these games for...I know on this site we can turn $40,00 into well over $80,000 with the deals we find.

By process of intense guesstimation, I figured that I saved/made over $500 last year thanks to CAG. It's all about letting yourself be open to opportunity coming your way, and I think everyone here knows that.

Sorry :whistle2:# forgive me lol

Doesn't change the fact that it's illegal ... you most likely could get away with it, like I said. However, it was for a raffle which isn't tax deductible, regardless of whatever paperwork you may have received. However, just remember, in the 1 in a million chance you get an audit after that, you could cause no end of problems for CAG and Child's Play, as well.

Well I would say this is definitely a gray area. If Child's Play was holding the raffle then I would agree with you, but with CAG holding a raffle I'm not sure a contribution to Child's Play constitutes the purchase of a raffle ticket.

It is definitely an intriguing question for a CPA. Speaking of that isn't CheapyDad one? What does he say, Cheapy?

Congrats to Everyone !

just reading over a few of the last post's
I've been particpated in charity auctions similiar to our "raffle" here and since it is true that all $5 is a donation to Child's Play , but since you do have a possibility of 'winning' a reward greater than your donation the value of the item would cancel that out, so if your not a winner and donate there should be no problem with considering it a donation
and the receipt is Honest

the ticket you get here is not really what your buying its just a 'thank you'
