CAG Socom Thread-SONY SHUTTING DOWN SERVERS AUGUST 31 for S1-CA Tue&Sun10pmEST

If it's that easy to join games now, I might be coming back. Especially since my friend also recently got the game. I'm just too lazy to pop the disc in, wish I could trade the game in for the PSN version.

Can't wait for that patch. Sounds like they're finally adding some useful stuff.

I just got my 600 kills with the AR, so I'm switching to the SMG. The P90 definitely helps my horrid aim with the 50 rounds it has. If only there was a commando equivalent.
Yeah the HK7 doesnt have much range on it.

Anyways I had a blast yesterday. Back on my game thanks to those Elim matches.
The way you were rockin' it last night I thought you were going to need a name change to mvp.

Does it cost them actual money to make those patches (besides Slant Six's salary)?

I wish more games would be updated as often as Socom has been these past few days.

*Cough*, looking at you Capcom, *cough*.

I'll be on after Phillies-Braves tonight. Why does it seem like be get better turnout on random nights than the actual game nights? Oh and I generally hate playing big maps.

Yeah its starting to seem like Thursday and Friday have become our most popular nights. We can just do CAG vs CAG tonight if yall want. I wont be on until ~11 so im down with anything

Good games last night, I'll probably try and get on around 10 tonight. Looking forward to the 1.50 update, always get a bit annoyed with how the channel names are sorted right now.

this thread has tons of life in it. the thread thats dead is the Official Socom one. We took shiit over :)
good games last night

I realized the other day that you can sort the list alphabetically if you move up to the list header and press X. Can't believe I've been scrolling through and trying to pick out names for the last few months. I'm still looking forward to friends list joining, though.

I think the official CAG nights are best when we do the CAG vs CAG stuff. The other 5 nights a week are swell for playing ranked games with CAGs as a team.

The friends list joining will be great, especially since I've had to quit the game 5 times in the last two days due to no in-game sound. If that bug doesn't get fixed it may cut my time in this game down (most likely from 5-6 hours a night to 4-5). You don't realize how huge the sound is in this game until it's gone. Not being able to hear shots in the distance, grenades hitting the ground or anything else really hurts.

I think I'll be on for a few hours tonight. Hopefully with sound.

Yea, I can't wait for that friendlist joining thing. I always see you guys online but don't want to bother you to invite me or whatnot. So I always end up playing a round or two and quitting.

After a long hiatus... man this game still gets my heart going. I hope that 1.50 patch comes out soon though because the game still has its quirks, although one-shot kills with the DE sounds a little unbalanced. Actually, it sounds really unbalanced.

Don't ever worry about playing a round or two and quitting. The more CAGs the better no matter what. If we're in a quick match we always quit out after the game to send invites to any CAGs that have jumped on.

I was truly disappointed with all of the one shot kills that they are adding into the game. As the game plays right now it seems like I have a magnetic plate in my head that sucks bullets to my temple. Having more one shot kills, especially with all the sniper rifles is going to be that much more frustrating. Most times when I get sniped, unless the guy is pretty skilled with the head shot, it takes a couple shots if I still have full health.

Right now I really need them to fix the sound glitch. Since the 1.4 patch my sound has been cutting in and out at the load screen. Then with the 1.42 patch the sound has been randomly dropping out in the game screen. It's happened 6 times in the last two days and requires to quit and rejoin. That's not possible in a quick match. Playing with no sound is next to impossible. The last game I played last night md was chasing me down with a silenced auto-shotgun. Not fun.

It would be even more awesome if you could organize friends by what game they are playing. Or better yet, some sort of custom grouping feature.

Yeah It will for sure change the gameplay a bit. Its hard to hit someone with it if they arent right next to you though. Nice to see you gettin back into it.
Ill be on after 10 gotta take care of my Draft
Can you write down some of your picks, I'm interested in hearing who you draft.

Stupid sound bug, happened twice last night and twice tonight. I really don't want to drop down to stereo just to be able to play my game, 5.1 is extremely valuable in this game.

Here is the players in the room for the 5 seconds before Lethal left:

Sorry for the terrible cell phone quality picture, but its readable.

I hope you guys owned those famas noobs that entered the room when I left.

I got the sound bug too during the Frostfire elimination. Those were some great games the whole night, though. It's way more fun playing against you guys than random people. Everyone seems to group up and communicate more.

Wow, looks like I missed out on one of the biggest CAG nights...

Good games last night guys, lots of fun.

I've only gotten the sound issue once, I'm glad its a game issue though. When it happened to me, I was afraid my ps3 or tv was broken.

fun games last night sorry i had to dip out during the last one i was passing out damned me for having to be at work by 630

Yes, great games last night guys and I finally ranked up to level 3. When I checked my awards it looks like I just need to get my 15 kills with one more shotgun to get my first SOCOM trophy (yeah, I know it's pretty lame).

With respect to the sound issue. I lost my sound for the first time last night and have to say it leaves you at a huge disadvantage. This was the first time it happened to me since I just started using the DD5.1 surround on the optical output (I use my X4 headset and my Sony bluetooth headset in speaker mode). I have to say that the game sounds so much better in DD over stereo and it helps a lot.
I need a sweet sound setup.
I have a sweet sound set up and I'm totally bumming. My game has locked up twice in the last day causing me to totally reset the ps3. The sound has been dropping out constantly so I took the 5.1 off and hooked up the old red and white. The 5.1 is so huge in this game. With the red and white cable you aren't able to tell where the shots are coming from as far as behind you or in front of you. I guess having just stereo sound is better than the silence I've been living in for the last week. I did get a VIP extract tonight in large map with no sound which made me feel pretty good.

Yeah I live off the Red indicator on screen. I cant even hear someone going up a ladder unless I am facing it. Im gonna step it up this summer I think. Need to go CAG style and get a 5.1 with optical in for less than $100.

PM me when you find that! I want one, too.

Dolby Headphones are awesome. I should put up a review of the Astro Mixamp I got a little while ago. Though my skills are still sucky, I'm able to hear distinctly where people are coming from. Especially since footsteps in this game sound like there are candy wrappers in people's pockets.

Though it's not true 5.1, it's perfect for those who are tied down to headphones. The Dolby Headphone logarithm is pretty darn realistic.

To attest to how good Dolby Headphone is, one game a while ago I could tell someone was looking right above me and to the right a little. This was confirmed by a teammate from a better vantage point saying there was someone directly above me. It's definitely not perfect, or that I'm not fully accustomed to it. I still have some trouble differentiating between sound coming from the front and back.

Will do! Although I have been saying this for almost a year now, and still havent found anything suitable. So it may be awhile....

Your skills arent that bad. Your kdr is over 1. Thats all that matters :)

How much does a good pair of headphones run?

It depends on what you're looking for. There's a bunch of factors to take into consideration.

- mic
- stereo/dolby/5.1
- wired/wireless
- sound isolation
- sound quality
- resistance/impedance (ohms)

The best sound you can get whilst still having 5.1 sound is to go with wired stereo low impedance headphones running through a dolby headphone adapter. There are only two such Dolby Headphone adapters out there. The JVC (Victor) SU-DH1 and the Astro A40 Mixamp. Both of those take a Dolby signal and convert it to something stereo headphones can use to emulate 5.1 sound.

I believe you have the Sony BT headset already, so that takes care of the mic. It really is good on speaker mode, picks up a lot of things. However, the inability to change volume in HQ mode still hasn't been addressed.

Stereo, Dolby and 5.1. Stereo is the best in quality, no doubt about it. Most 5.1 cans are basically small 5.1 speakers condensed into headphone compartments. This results in a great loss in quality (plus they look ridiculously big. Dolby enabled headphones are great, but they either require a reciever or an adapter.

Wired signals versus wireless signals. You just have to balance quality with functionality. In terms of quality, nothing beats a wired pair of cans.

Sound isolation is just how well the headphones isolate the media sound from outside noise. Depends on the construction mostly.

Sound quality is really subjective, but you can get the jist of this from many online reviews and resources.

Resistance, the lower the better. If there is higher resistance or impedance, then you'd need a larger signal which goes into amplifiers. But if the headphones are low impedance, than something as small as an ipod can drive them.

If you really want to invest in a good pair of headphones, I would suggest looking through avsforum and especially head-fi.org.

The usually top stereo headphones are Sennheisers, from what I recall. As for gaming sets, it seems like X4s are very well recieved. I rarely hear anything about other gaming headsets.

Personally I went with the Astro A40 Mixamp and Sony MDR-7506 (super comfortable and sound is top notch, plus a little cheaper than all the other "high" grade cans). The Sony headphones (even used in Studio monitoring, look at the music guy in Socom) don't look ridiculous, so I can use them for other applications. And of course, I have the Sony BT mic, which I hope Sony will eventually fix, though I doubt it.

Put me on that mailing list for the cheap 5.1 hookup. I'd like to put together a new rig soon.

Also I finally got to hear the L96A and was disappointed! (Also it got me killed many times.) Here's how it sounded in BF2... beautiful! It's more the thunderous echo I enjoyed than the actual gunshot, but oh well. It was like headshotting people with a lightning bolt.

See option, you forgot the most important thing in that whole tech post - price! We just like it broken down really simple to - "how much does it cost?"

I guess I was lucky, got my cheapo Sony HTIB from Sears on Black Friday for $130 I think. Its not the greatest but it works for my small gaming setup. I wasn't on because I needed this remedy for being tired called sleep. Sorry, metaly forgot about GTA, I would have played that since it doesn't last until 1AM or later like socom lol.

I got my Onkyo 5.1 surround set for $120 at the www.shoponkyo.com website. It's refurbished, but it came looking like new and it included all the hookup cables. Original price was around $250-$300 at the time. I'll keep an eye out and post here when another one comes around.

 well at least I think I finally got up to a 1:1 KDR Tuesday night according to my main screen.

Hey it took me like 2000 kills to get up to a 1:1 kdr. Im still only like 500 kills over deaths. 4900-4400 around there. So its rough.

Yeah Condor shoponkyo always have great deals on their refurb sets. Seems like most the ones lately have been 7.1 which is too rich for my blood :(

Edit- Apparently they have changed the round time to 5 minutes down from 6. If true then I think its a good move. Less camping!

Oh sorry about that. Totally forgot about that.

If anyone is into the best bang for their buck in terms of stereo headphones, get the Sony MDR-V6. They are exactly the same as my MDR-7506s except for nickel connectors, different frequency range, and price at $70 ($30 cheaper).

They are essentially the same. One was just geared towards "consumers" the other towards "professionals."

Again, the instrumentalist in the Socom Movies -> Music video used the same MDR-V6s I am talking about. They are good enough to be used in studios.

Then you could pair this with a Dolby Headphone adapter. Mine went for $150 after tax and shipping. Definitely worth it for all the features (i.e. optical in, Dolby Headphone 2 processor, mp3 play 3.5mm input).

So MDR-V6s + Astro Mixamp + Monoprice optical cable is around $230 alltogether after tax and shipping.

This is if you go the headphone route.

If you're curious about the Dolby Headphone and how it sounds, you can go to the Dolby website and test out the DH technology on your computer with normal stereoheadphones.

www.dolby.com/consumer/technology/headphone.html

As for speakers, the cheapest I could find was a logitech z-5500 set for around $250. $100 is already 2/5 of that. Or you can hunt for a refurb/used deal, but most of them still remain well above the $100 mark.

In my opinion, optical sees to be reserved for the bring out the best in audio. So it would be an oxymoron asing for a sub-$100 set with an optical in.

I played one of the worst camping games ever last night. It was a quick match with some guys that were okay. The second game was large quarantine demo. The score was 2-1 in their favor then they started having a guy run and grab the satchel right away. From there he'd run out the side and jump in the water. He'd camp in the water for the full round time drawing it out. We'd kill everyone else on their team, but were never able to find him. After three rounds of that crap the next game was elimination which I elected to quit for the night. It was incredibly lame.

If I have a Yamaha 5.1 DTS/Dolby Digital receiver will some 5.1 headphones work out of the headphone jack or would I still need the headphone adapter? It would be really nice to have a set for these 1am socom sessions when the bride is sleeping.

If it's a plain 3.5mm jack and the reciever doesn't output Dolby Headphone, then yes, you would need an adapter. But if your headphones are 5.1, there should be some sort of adapter (most like built in or came with the headphones) so you can hook those headphones straight into the ps3 or whatever sound source you have, eliminating need for a DH adapter (those things are $100+).

By 5.1 do you mean the headphones have multiple speakers within the cans? If so, then yeah, you should be able to connect those headphones straight to the audio source. That way it's actual Dolby Digital 5.1 (compressed to the 8 small speakers within the headphone) instead of Dolby Headphone which is artificial 5.1 across stereo (two speakers).
