CAG Star Trek Online Fleet/game discussion thread
Science here. And Itdefx, you should join the fleet. :)

The OP has been updated at long last!
Opinions and suggestions are welcome.
I'm kinda with a fleet right now, but thinking of quitting. We have done NOTHING as a fleet/group. Only the fleet master has helped me out on a few bugged missions and let me test drive some weapons. I usually collect what ever anomalies and give it to them , along with food for their tribbles as I have no interest in crafting or tribble breeding.

I will send you a message later this week.

Our Steam voice chat test was a success. Everyone please try to use voice chat while playing - especially when teamed up with fleet members. To use Steam voice chat, first go to the Steam group page, join group chat, and from there join voice chat. This means you need to run Steam while playing Star Trek Online. Thanks to Manlai, Metaly, Dwapook, and Tarpan for their help. It was a blast!

Itdefx that sounds great. You'll enjoy our fleet; we have several friendly members, especially late at night.

I admit that I haven't been on as much the last couple weeks, but neither fleet I'm in seems to have done much as a group yet. Is there anything that has to be done as a group that will work much better as a fleet than just the random groups you end up with? I'm thinking everybody is all over the place in rank and ship levels to have much organization now, but maybe I'm wrong about that.

The chat is a great step. When I was beta testing and the first couple nights the other fleet I was in chatted a lot and that helped.

A bunch of us did a fleet action a while back as a group and it was pretty fun. There's some screenshots a little ways back in this thread. I'm the guy in the yellow-gold spandex armor. ;)

A lot of times if you just ask to group with someone for missions/fleet actions/whatever, you'll find someone in your level range willing to group with you or help you out. Seems like that's been the case when I've been on.

My T2 and T3 ships :p

God I love taking screenshots of this game. The backgrounds are truly amazing and I am very sure when they patch it for DX10 or higher it's going to be even more realistic.

Damn, those are nice. I finally got my next ship, so I picked a cruiser although I really wanted an escort, but I think I'll wait a bit for that. Cruiser is a beast, except that it takes forever to make a turn.

Really nice shots. I've always really liked Star Trek's ship design and so far have taken way too many screens when I'm just flying around. The best part is they aren't just of the Enterprise or the usual series ships--they're mine! :)

They need to add a screenshot camera mode with panning options to let people take some truly exceptional shots.

It's really a beautiful-looking game, especially when you're exploring different sectors or worlds. They did a good job of making the different alien environments, IMO. I'm so far behind in this game. Hopefully I will get my T3 ship tonight. :p

More ship porn because you know you love it.

Beta ships:
USS Minsk NCC-93132 (I think this is the default registry. Had I known, I would have changed it.)

USS Verdun NCC-95941 does a DS9 flyby
screenshot_2010-01-22-23-39-38.jpg

USS Shuhia Taiba NCC-102670 after an encounter. Those T2 escorts are all so ugly.
screenshot_2010-01-23-18-01-01.jpg

Release ships:
USS Minsk NCC-93132-A and some huge rock.
screenshot_2010-02-07-06-32-38.jpg

USS Verdun NCC-95941-A is mostly the same as the original, but I went with the round saucer because it looks great.
screenshot_2010-02-17-03-49-34.jpg

USS Volare NCC-102563 leaves spacedock on its inaugural cruise. Science ship!!
screenshot_2010-02-19-01-38-38.jpg

Bonus!
The Minsk makes a rare planetary touchdown.

The loneliest planet. For some reason I just love this shot.

NIIICCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

Strange...I have yet to see ONE lens flare in space :(

I have mixed feelings about the impulse trails. In some shots its great, in others it's meh. Wish there was a way to turn it off.

FYI, it looks like Cryptic is doing a player survey that if completed nets you 240 cryptic points. Good enough to buy the Fed Klingon. The Survey is short and its kinda nice the company wants our input already.

Check your email that is linked with your account.

Saw that when I checked my mail this morning. Simple little survey. Part of me wants to get the Klingon, but the other part wants to wait for inevitable uniform pack.

Have some more del taco codes, asking for $2 per code towards acquisition costs (lunch). If this is against forum rules please let me know.

Yeah, are the Klingon or Ferengi even that much better then any other toon you can generate? Besides you can always add a Klingon or Ferengi as a bridge officer. Or build a Knockoff character with an alien character.

I'm holding on to my points till something better comes along.

This!

I really can't wait til they allow for in bridge combat views.

So what did people put down for the survey?

I said that I enjoyed the space combat the most and would like to see ship interiors and diplomatic missions, the latter mainly because it sounds like a completely different game element. I think I also said I'd like to see persistent PvE areas, which hopefully would make the game feel a little more like traditional MMOs instead of everything being instanced.

For least favorite I said Memory Alpha, because from my experience with crafting it seems tedious and unintuitive and I'm not sure if it's worth my time. I'd really like to see it overhauled to be more appealing.

Stuff like this makes me pretty hopeful for the future of STO, because a lot of the ideas sounded pretty novel and I know Cryptic has a history of adding significant new features to their games, at least from what I know of City of Heroes.

Also for the C-Store comments, I'd love to get some new uniforms or ship parts, but I'd also like more costume slots. I would definitely pay real money (or at least my accumulated CP) for more slots.

I think for the most part, I put that ground missions needed work. I also said more recognizable in-game references would add interest. This is my first MMO and even though I can see it being repetitive for non-fans, the ST theme is win all the way. I just wish I had more time to play. I'm still stuck as a lowly LT Commander.

Ditto on the ship interiors and diplomatic missions. I kinda wish the game had more depth then go there shoot the bad guys then scan stuff. I know I'm still early in the game but that seems to be like 90% of the missions I've done.

Diplomatic missions or episodes that took place just on ship with your Bridge crew would be awesome. I also wish there was at least some speech from the Bridge officers or dialog trees that could let me inject at least a bit of my personality into the game.

I really think they should fix the loot drops when your fighting a ship more powerful then yours... For example, I spent almost an hour along with 3 other people trying to take out a Romulan Schmitar Warbird Dreadnough (sp?)... This thing was just as strong as the movie version from Nemesis..and I am not talking about the Reman ones out there. We finally kill it and what do we get? A battery... a freaking battery! :( Big ships like that should drop either there weapons or shields or some engine part! and of course the devs can make an excuse, oh the warp core destroyed everything except the battery :\

What are the requirements? I didn't have an issue. I'll go look at them.

Minimum 6 characters with a mixture of letters/numbers? I don't see that being all that hard.

That shouldn't be a requirement. Mine isn't set to follow that, and I created mine before I was named an admin. Let me create a test user, might have to change that if possible on the board. Okay it says it needs to be mixed case, but it doesn't. I'll work on fixing that. Something to do with the style sheet.

I can only make the Saturday fleet events, so we'd better do something good. :) Are there any ground fleet actions besides Breaking the Planet?

Also that's very weird if the stylesheet is affecting passwords.

It's not affecting the password itself, it is affecting the prompting off to the side as far as I can tell. I could be using the wrong terminology for style sheet as well. My web design skills are extremely base. It says what you need to do to set a proper password and it's picking up incorrect information.

i sent you a pm :D

So I finally get to the DS9 Missions...guess what? You have to go running around back and forth between DS9 and the starting sector for commodities (sp?)..so basically UPSing in space :( I am kinda getting bored of doing space encounter missions at 4xx xp each. I am at Commander 9 atm.

I think I just got some of the DS9 missions so if we're on at the same time we should have someone at DS9 and the other at Sol and see if we can just mail stuff back and forth. :)

I'm Commander 9 as well and once I hit Captain this weekend (hopefully) I'll probably start focusing more on refining my ship/officers than doing missions.

I think I might let me sub run out in March. This game doesnt seem to do it for me. I love Start Trek to death, but there's just something missing :(

I was fortunate to have someone camping out at Sol and mailing me that materials for that idiotic UPS mission on DS9. You should've checked to see if anyone in the fleet was on who could help ya out.

Added four Star Trek Online reviews to the OP:

1up.com
IGN
Kotaku
Ten Ton Hammer

Obviously I tend to agree much more with Ten Ton Hammer and Kotaku. But most of us will admit that people who are into Star Trek (as the IGN writer obviously isn't) will like the game a lot more than people who know little or nothing about it.

Also, everyone needs to read this article about getting the developers to add the ability for fleets to enter fleet actions:
http://www.tentonhammer.com/sto/features/editorials/fleetactions
And then go to the official forum thread and voice your support for this important feature.

I think that like many MMORPGs, it came out maybe not as polished as it possibly could have. I didn't buy it after spending 3 months in the beta because I just couldn't justify the cost and I think the reviews from IGN/etc reflect that.

I tend to agree with Kotaku, but my experiences were almost solely through the first set of missions (since at the time in the beta the servers were only up once or twice a week for a few hours).

As a big Star Trek fan, I hope that the devs do develop this game a lot more and solve a lot of the issues such as the grouping and the relative easiness of the game and maybe I'd consider buying it. Also I have to admit it seems the Klingon side was an afterthought. I do however agree that the game is beautiful and I love seeing everyone's ships in the thread.

Ok, I'm lost now on how I get to be in the CAG fleet. I send the questionaire in right after it was initially posted. Did I get kicked out or was I never in?

EDIT: Never mind, I'm in the fleet (in game) as I have been for a while, but I'm not listed on the new web site yet. I assume that if I follow the rules on the new web site I will be eligible for the fleet events and will be listed there as well. I'll try to get that done soon.

Turls it would also be a good idea to actually play the game sometimes. :p

Yes, we'll add you to the site's member list when I get around to updating it (soon).

I have had a crazy 2 weeks at work including 2 all nighters, and besides that I have two characters I'm playing, but no excuse, I plan on getting back into things this week!

Lame patch last night/this morning:

Tonight’s update contains setup files needed to allow players to copy their characters from Holodeck to the new Test Server “Tribble”. Once we can confirm that character copy is functioning as expected, we will turn on access to the Test Server. Players will then be able to copy over their existing Holodeck characters and test new updates before they go Holodeck (including the first of the new Borg Special Task Force Missions). Your Holodeck characters will remain intact on Holodeck and unaffected by anything that happens on Tribble. More details and instructions to follow once we turn on access to the Test Server.

I hope the respec option isn't too far off, because after getting to the later levels and reading more about skills and systems, there are definitely some points I'd like to put elsewhere.

I second that. I desperately want to revamp my skills. However, I hope when they release the new skill tree they give us a free respec at that time.

Good time last night at the first official (?) fleet gathering. Hope to make many more. Just hope some of you either work on your mics or setup push-to-talk before then ;) . . .I don't know if it is Steam chat or what since I've never used it before last night, but never had that many issues with the Ventrilo server I've used recently in STO.

Hopefully I'll be able to make it to the Saturday event, I don't have a headset though. I can borrow the one from work over the weekend though I guess.

Edit:
Played a mission with some peeps last night, pretty fun! Hope to see you guys again on Saturday!

Nobody joined me for voice chat during fleet time last night. I'm not coordinated enough to do justice to text chat and take on Gorns at the same time. If I'm not asleep I will try to be there Saturday.
