CAG Star Trek Online Fleet/game discussion thread

I did the firecave mission a while ago. Asides from my BOffs being completely confused with pathing, it wasn't tough to complete. What's bugged about it now?

I had the same problem of BOFFs not understand the paths. I ended up having to do the last half of it by myself.

Well we rescued 4 out of the 5 hostages , with the last one being held on the upper left hand corner of the map, which of course was BLOCKED by a firewall . Behind that firewall was a group of cardies which of course we could not attack because of the firewall.

If any member of the group died (as in fell into the fire pits) they would be forced to respawn to the first beam in location, which would cause the game to respawn new cardies in that area and or reblock that section of the cave making them trapped on that side. Only way around it was to beam back up to the ship then beam back down.

We tried this for awhile with no luck :(

I posted this in the fleet forums too...

Michael A. Martin has written a novel based on Star Trek Online which comes out on March 30.

You can sample an excerpt from it here.

I think it's great for Star Trek Online to get its own novel. The game's story is pretty deep (especially the backstory), and a novel can flesh it out in ways that a videogame can't. Martin is a pretty good author who knows his Trek, so my hopes are up for this. We'll publish a review on the fleet site shortly after the book is available.

Also, remember that the major Season One update comes out this Thursday! We'll have special Fleet Events Thursday and Saturday night to break in the new fleet actions. :)

Eastx, I haven't been able to do many fleet actions so far, but have time coming up for the next week and half. I'm still pretty far behind as ranks and ship quality go. Would I have a hard time to keep up with the fleet?

That's no problem, Boneless. Whenever we do fleet stuff, some people are Admirals and others are Lieutenant Commanders. The point is more to talk and do stuff together than for everybody to excel in battle or something. The actual raidisodes are the only time everyone needs to be an admiral and playing like an expert, but we don't do those as a fleet yet since not enough active players are Admirals.

As long as you're still with us, we'd love to have you, and you also need to sign up for the fleet forums, please. Look forward to seeing you!

Garden gnome + dwarf mixed together. At least their personality description seems to fit that of a dorf. Too bad mine is like, over 6 feet tall. Ugly woman though!

Thanks for the heads up, KingDox. To be honest, the super-buggy weekend last week has made me really upset. It's nice that they're doing something to make it up to us though.

Anyone have/had trouble with that Cave of Fire mission (the one where you beam down to the fire caves to rescue hostages)? I've ran several times and keep on getting bugged if I die or my team members die when I have 4 out of 5 rescued. Kyra and another CAG helped out but we got the same bug (Firewall won't drop). It's a know bugged mission that still isn't fixed.

Also my Assault Cruiser has a crazy ass slide that if I do it right can strafe the hell out of enemy ships.
Interesting interview with Jack Emmert here http://thebigfreaks.com/?p=263 "well over 100,000 subscribers" At launch they boasted about 1 million+ pre-orders. An ~85% drop in player base in 2 months doesn't bode well. Hopefully it rebounds for them.
Yea I was scratching my head on this one. I do recall seeing 1 million+pre orders or members at launch brag...but then reading "over 100,000 subscribers.." was like ok........900k some quit after the first month? Why? Cause they got bored once they got to RA5, which A LOT of people made in the first week alone. I'm only in RA2 right now. Took my time to get to it so I could enjoy the experience. The mission stories are pretty good, but a lot of them are bugged to hell so I can't complete them :( I am pretty sure they are going to reduce xp rewards in the coming weeks and making more powerful weapons rarer.

The crafting and Marketplace need major overall and some of the ships need some tweeking on the models.

But overall I like it and it's a very visually pleasing game.

So are Thursdays dead too? No fleet stuff last 2 Thursdays. Or maybe 2 out of the last 3, I can't remember. I am way behind in my leveling anyway, real life has intruded again, but I thought I'd post here at least. EDIT: There were 2 of us last night.

I was on last night.

It really bothers me that I can't complete that fire cave mission to continue story mode quests, which leaves me to grind patrol missions :(

Ehhh....next time I'm on, I'll run Fire Caves and complete it for you dude. I just ran it on my tac on the way to RA5 and it was no problem. I thought I ran into the problem you described, but then realized there was still a hostage I hadn't freed (or I freed him and he re-appeared un-freed). Either way, once I freed him, fire wall dropped. I'll be on tonight and this weekend (EST), so look me up. Hopefully I'm not doing an STF. Check my status and if it shows me in Sibiran or Starbase #82, I won't be able to help.

I might be on tonight as well, assuming I can finish getting my laptop back in fighting order. After I was on earlier this week or last week it decided to give me fits.

I don't know if it's me or something I did wrong in the first part of the mission (the space mission), but other cags tried to help and they got bugged too. So I might have to drop the mission (again), and redo it completely with you.

See ya on line

Where is everyone? I sent out a fleet chat hello yesterday and none of the 3 people that were on answered. Anyways I am going to grind out admiral 3 tonight and then take a break...well because I go on vacation on sat til next sat.

I think the launch comment was 1 million "accounts" which to them just meant people across the Cryptic forum, Champions, etc., whether they paid or not. And who knows how many of those were duplicates, with people trying to up their odds to make it into the beta.

100,000+ subscribers isn't too shabby for a MMO. Wonder how many of them are lifetime, though, and how many of them actually translate into monthly revenue for them.

Between the BioWare Bazaar thing, and DA: Origins I've been a little predisposed the last week and a half or so. I had planned on last Saturday, but fell asleep watching the Rockies in the 14th inning. I will definitely be there Saturday night, if not Thursday as well.

I'm only on from around 6:30 to 10pm and then I'm not around. Weekends you can find me on at 11am/12pm and then until maybe 6pm. That's all EST. If you aren't on at those times, you won't find me on. Also if I'm in an STF, there will be a lot of spam and I will probably not even notice guild chat. Easier to spam me with tells.

I bought the Nimbus ship pack that came out today and here's what I put together with it:

screenshot_2010-04-15-18-01-49.jpg

This uses the Destiny saucer and Trident nacelles. It's still not as pretty as a cruiser, but this is the first time I've been really happy with how my deep space science vessel looks. :)

That would make a neat escort ship... it should be what 20 or 25% off in the C-store today or the next few days.

Decided to grab the advanced escort skin and Ferengi skin today before the discount ran out. I've always thought I had the lobes to be a Ferengi captain.:)

Ok, I'm back from vacation... logged in and no one was about... see no real updates. :( I did get that Nimbus class and Ferengi skin during the discount days. :)

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!

General Updates
 • Your starship will now look for a clear path and adjust heading prior to warping out so that it doesn't warp through the center of a planet
I loved warping through planets because it was so silly.

I'd love to get on tonight to check out the 1.1 update (full release notes, there's a lot of cool stuff), but I've got company. I'll be on this weekend for sure though.

R.I.P. Viral Matrix.

Sounds great...but a few things worry me..

1. Veteran rewards are being offered way too soon. Why are they offering this when the game is only 3 months old? Why not wait a year?

2. Free trial weekend for those who "took a break" from the game. That means a lot of people quit after the first month :(

3. Free respect, character slots and so on...when a lot of other people may have paid for these slots. So far I only have two characters, my main...Retro Freed and my new character Marauder Mo ;)

Here's the rewards:

100 Days

 • Stalwart Title.
 • FREE Full Respec.
 • FREE Costume Piece – A special uniform Veteran badge.
 • A 2% Captain and Officer Skill Point Boost up to Lieutenant Commander 6.
200 Days

 • Redoubtable Title.
 • FREE Extra Ship Slot.
 • FREE Costume Piece – Special Veteran Uniform Option.
 • A 3% Captain and Officer Skill Point Boost up to Lieutenant Commander 6.
300 Days

 • Dauntless Title.
 • FREE Character Slot.
 • FREE Ship "Firework" emote.
 • A 4% Captain and Officer Skill Point Boost up to Lieutenant Commander 6.
400 Days

 • Valiant Title.
 • FREE Full Respec.
 • FREE Access to The Captain’s Table.
 • FREE Vanity Ship – Captain’s Yacht.
 • A 5% Captain and Officer Skill Point Boost up to Lieutenant Commander 6.
One free respec and a costume piece is pretty trivial for a reward, although it is only the 100-day one. The skill point boost is nice though, let the vets breeze through the lower levels a little easier.

The vanity ship sounds interesting though. Wonder what that will be like?

As much as I love Star Trek and this game...for some reason I just don't have the urge to log in anymore. I will every other day, but lately it's been log in, do a mission, log out. I am already at RA3 and don't feel like grinding out to Admiral 5. That firecave mission is still borked, so continuing story based missions are impossible because of this...maybe that's why I have lost interest.
Yes, Itdefx, this is all good news. You have an odd way of expressing it, but whateva.
It's not ALL good news. It's good news taken item by item. Taken as a whole, it is bad news for the lifespan of this title, and it's bad news in that it's evidence that the developer is missing the point in general. The people who abandoned the game didn't do it because they were disappointed in the amount of free stuff or vanity ships. They did it (in part) because the quests are repetitive and the writing is so very, very lame.

What specifically do you dislike about the writing? I think it's generally good.

There definitely do need to be more quests (and a greater variety in them), but those take time, so I'm not expecting anything new there until Season 2.
What specifically do you dislike about the writing?
Instead of using ST as a basis for "strange new" worlds, characters, stories, technology, etc., they took the easy, boring route. Everybody gets a ship, and it's us vs. the Borg.

Plus, the dropping of names from the source material occurs at an alarming rate: In a starfleet so big that every Joe Subscriber has a ship of his own to captain, it's amazing that starfleet affairs refer back to the same friggin' TV characters almost every time.

Yeah, it's cool to say "Make it so" to yourself and zoom around in a ship, but the overarching story isn't engaging at all. They took a bland sci-fi MMO and branded it ST via name dropping and sprites. Good writing could have made all the difference, but the material is just flat. What writing there is only exists to remind the gamer, "This is definitely not a bland sci-fi MMO, THIS IS STAR TREK! We just mentioned Data! Like the TV shows!"

I dunno, I guess you're not trolling, but all that reminds me of what a troll would say.

The references to other Star Trek series are part of what makes any Star Trek fiction what it is. Enterprise is filled with references to TOS and TNG, TNG is filled with references to TOS, DS9 connects with TNG and has references to TOS, etc. Star Trek fans like when they come across a character they've seen before (or one of their descendants, as is usually the case in STO). I think you're in an extreme minority wishing for less Trek references in this (Trek) game.

As for the Borg, they're a big part of the Admiral level stuff, but the Undine infiltration and Klingon war are the actual overarching storylines.

I don't think that is what he is saying. I think he means, that beside the TV show there are characters from the novels, comics and other media that they can use in a more effective way instead of just name dropping the TV show only.

I agree what you said here. Some of these story missions were nice but yes a lot of mention to past characters or you will encounter someone related to one of the shows character. A few things that bother me right now about the game out side of the bugs

-Ship designs...holy shit it's like after you hit captain, all the ships look like crap.

-Borg/Undline (sp?) they should not be in the game as they are too powerful and usually end game type enemies, yet in this game you can take on an entire borg fleet :(

-Ship upgrade slots (consoles) are confusing as hell and for some reason don't work right for me :(

-Missing class ships that should be early starter ships...come on a lot of people want the excelsor class to be an early class ship, yet we get reliant class ships instead.

-PVP space maps have stupid designs. ...the worse I have seen.

enough for now.

Hmm , so I decided to finish up my last explore mission (the one I set up 3 weeks ago) and holy shit they upped the difficulty. Either that or all my cannons are nerfed.
Anyways

Guess I got dumped from the Steam group (would have been nice to get official notice, but I realize technically I wasn't participating enough, even though it seems like Thursday was always dead when I checked so that really left only one scheduled time a week) . If there's a "2nd phase" to the CAG group with rookies after they get the bugs worked out, I'll probably take it up again then if somebody wants to PM me. I really got sick of the major issues stopping me from advancing in that early Gorn mission. Thanks for the hard work EastX and the rest.
