CAG Star Trek Online Fleet/game discussion thread

Finally tried Season 4 out a bit last night. (The test weekend was the incentive I needed.) The shooter mode is pretty cool. It's not quite as fast or responsive as an actual FPS but that's understandable. I was actually so focused on trying out all the weapon updates that I forgot to see how it all feels in standard RPG mode. I'll probably try to do that later tonight.

I think once Season 4 launches, I'll probably play semi-regularly again and finally do some Foundry missions now that ground combat won't be dreadful.

I messed around on tribble early this morning and tried out some borg missions. Honestly, I don't like shooter mode at all. Mainly, concentrating fire is tough. You jump targets all the time. Aiming doesn't matter. You don't hit the target you're aiming at most of the time. Worst of all, it is a separate set of keybinds so you have to redo all your power tray and any other custom ground keybinds manually with /bind. x.x

That be said, the changes have made RPG mode and ground combat in general much smoother. I'll ultimately not use shooter mode but the changes have made ground combat in classic rpg mode more fun.

Well I gave the tribble server a visit. They beefed up the fire cave mission and gave them hoods...ok..........

I couldn't get it into 1st person mode.........how do I get that to work?
press C
C is crouch :D

I remapped it and no matter what I do to set it to FP mode, it always crouches :( *sigh* oh well.

oh I thought you meant what to push for zoomed aiming once in shooter mode. To toggle between shooter and rpg mode, you push B. Once in shooter mode, it's a whole fresh set of keybinds. Press C for the zoomed scope view.

haha... Ok so I waited this long to make a Klingon Character because i wanted to wait out the Kronos update.... wow it took like freaking an hour to run around and do all that BS missions just to get to space! :(

The Fed starter mission was better than this.

I'm going to wait till the next FE to roll my KDF toon. I figure the new FE will also give use more of a reason to play together again. Unless the new borg stuff turns out cool.

If you played the tribble test weekend for S4, the crossfire tribble is available for claiming in the c-store under special unlocks. It either gives 3.3% damage boost (shooter mode) or 3.3% damage resistance (RPG).

Ok so I decided to leave the game again.... gonna wait out til another good update comes out... don't have any desires to play on a spare 17 inch monitor.

Duty officer system is due out soon (september I think). I think most of us are on hiatus until then anyway. It seems like grinding out some emblems is a good idea given some of the devs' long range plans, but I just can't bring myself to grind them out right now.

Whoa..

so all those people who bought life time subscriptions are probably going to get some major free stuff. fuck.

This is going to turn into something expensive though. Wanna gain access to that new sector? it's gonna cost 1200 points (or whatever they call it now). Wanna rank up another few levels? that's another 1000 points you have to buy!

I am going to wait and see how this plays out. Even if free there is going to be a high price to pay later on.

I honestly wish there would have been an expansion disc by now with the new ships and factions...but oh well.

Nice, already had four friends express interest in it after I mentioned F2P. Now if they'd just add some new content for the vets...

Since it's fun to speculate, here's the subscriber vs. F2P feature matrix for Champions Online. A C-Points stipend would be pretty amazing.

Whoa, let's calm down. If STO's F2P model is anything like CO's, most of the limitations will be on customization and community features, so for instance you'll start with fewer costume slots and your chat options. There's nothing like a F2P level gate. Also many restrictions lift after enough play time, or if you buy any C-Points.

The only content unavailable to F2P CO players are the "Adventure Packs," which sound similar to STO's Feature Episodes. Even then, each pack sells for 420 CP, so you could get all three of STO's episodes for just over the cost of a month's subscription.

Anyway, looking forward to eventually seeing more people in-game, and yes... connteeennnttt!

Ent-F hasn't been released yet but if the existing pricing model holds, it'll be 1200 points (3 months' stipend).

This F2P thing annoys me a little. Don't know why, it just ticks me off just a tad... like someone poking me with a pencil.

The only thing I see right now that's annoys me is:

-Priority log in's? So free users get messages saying "Sorry but all avaible free log ins are filled for today..please try again later...and it's on 6am in the morning!!"

-Energy credit limit....this one scares me....yea granted I don't have a billion credits and only use the money for star ships, but seriously?

-Item slot limits....It's gonna be hard with this one.

Sorry I tend to do that. ;)

Also how does that affect Fleet banks? Say the fleet master (or whatever) is a free user, does that mean that the bank gets a nerf too?

Firstly, I don't think free users can be fleet leaders. Secondly, the fleet bank isn't tied to individual users so it'll remain unaffected.

On to some fleet business. With the f2p transition, let's have a membership drive. Recruit friends, family, neighbors, delivery people, your local grocer, hair stylist, and pets to join CAG Fleet when they sign up for STO. I'll be implementing some new fleet features in order to aid potential new free players.

Seeing as free players cannot create fleets (or at least heavily limited in ability to do so), the best thing is to bring them into CAG Fleet. Anyone active in the fleet at this point will be given recruiting rank to make inviting people as easy as possible. Please let me or metaly know if you are currently without recruiting privileges and we'll set you up.

By the time f2p becomes active, I will max out the fleet bank and leave a tab or 2 open for "open storage." These 1 or 2 tabs will give free players some relief with regard to their space limitations. Obviously, the permissions will be set at the lowest level so the honor system will be in effect. i.e. If you didn't put anything in those tabs, don't take anything in there out. Should an option to buy more fleet bank spots become available, I will use some of my monthly stipend to buy some.

I will continue to stock the fleet bank with useful items for various levels.

I am still raising funds for the eventual fleet starbases. Please chip in by depositing credits into the fleet bank. Hopefully there will be additional storage and other features that will be a benefit to f2p players as well.

Just a heads up for folks who are interested in playing when STO goes F2P. The amount of the game they give away to silver accounts is huge. I have a life time sub but if I didn't I would cancel my sub and play for free and then only buy a few things.

Its crazy how little extra they are offering folks who are still shelling out 15 bucks a month.

Also Alienware is running another STO promo, this one only gives you a 10 day trial. But you get to unlock a ship and costume that usually cost money. You can create an account using the 10 day trial, unlock the items. Then when the game goes F2P log back in with your same account and the unlocked stuff should still be yours to keep.

Already ahead of ya ;)

In September's Ask Cryptic, Kingdox had one of his questions answered. Also, the first question referred to the skill tree revamp on ship skills and it looks strangely like my ship skill revamp idea back in March. :) I feel vindicated.

Hey so I loved this game but due to a lack of friends at launch I went back to that OTHER mmo after about 3 months. I played through beta and launch, got to Rear Admiral as an Engineer in an escort. At least I think rear Admiral, I had a dervish, a sovereign, and a science vessel of some sort or another.

Anyway to the meat of the question, other then shooter mode, which I saw and made me want to come back to the game, what else have I missed?
I know they revamped the crafting somehow and added diplomacy missions, but what about ship tiers, were any added?

Hey, are you in CAG Fleet? If not, we should remedy that when you come back. Anyway, the level cap was raised to 51 (Vice Admiral), or 10 levels higher than RA. Tier 5 is still tops in ships but there are quite a few more ships at that top level, some of which are only available as a VA. For the most part, all the VA tier 5 ships have special abilities but are otherwise the same as the RA ones. For example, in exchange for a console slot, the Galaxy class refit can saucer separate. The Multi Vector Assault Prometheus is in the game. There are more ships, some can be had for free, others have to be purchased from the C-Store.

As for game content, they remastered a handful of missions to add in some voice acting and actually refreshed them quite a bit to make them into whole new missions with new rewards and all. There are also "featured episodes" with set story arcs, around 5 episodes per arc, that feature a specific race or 2. There are a lot of team-based accolades in these missions as well, rewarding having a diverse team with you when you do these missions. Since you've been away a while, these missions are likely the biggest change you'll see in terms of new content.

Currently, there's a content draught so a lot of us are on a bit of a break away from the game. There should be plenty for you to do though.

Heads up the FTP closed beta is out for current subs. The rewards to doing the beta test kinda blow now but the devs said more rewards are on their way.

I am really wondering for those who are currently paying for the subscription if they will be getting more inventory slots than the F2P users... I forget what current subscribers have right now..is it the same as what is going to be posted when F2P hits or just be increased as a *bonus*?

I know the f2p details haven't been finalized yet, but is it worth picking up the game cheap somewhere before it launches to qualify for a higher tier after f2p launches?

I'm especially interested in basics like higher limits on character and ship slots and credits. With the LOTRO f2p transition, picking up an old Moria box was a great value (much better than spending points in the store).

Searches turn up a few old sales for $2.50 and $3.75, but it looks like the price is $6.46 +shipping at Amazon now. Anywhere cheaper?

I'm playing the Alienware trial now and having enough fun to spend $5 or $10 for less restrictions on f2p.

From my understanding, the tiers are more based on whether you're subscribed and not whether you have a retail copy. Once the game goes F2P, I assume you'll be able to download the client for free (or continue playing your trial) and then decide whether you want to buy a subscription/gold status after that.

The main reason you might want to buy a copy is to get one of the retailer exclusive items, if those are still available. I know at least the Steam one is, which gets you the automated defense turret and a few other extras, but it's also $15. Some of them (like the Amazon digital copy) also came with C-points and a month of game time.

haha should we all team up and try to cap on tribble to get the bonuses?

@mikon - there's no real reason to buy a retail version right now if you're only concerned about membership tiers for when the game goes free. As metaly said, get one of the retail versions if you want the bonus items that come with them. If you wanted to play now, the free time you'd get with a retail version should last you until ftp. It'll also give you access to the ftp server where you can earn bonuses like others talked about earlier. For a quick primer on what bonuses you get with a particular retailer's version, click on the link in my sig.

there isn't any reason to buy a boxed copy unless it includes a bounus that is more expensive in the c store. Cryptic isn't giving folks anything extra if you own a boxed copy. You'll be fine when the game goes ftp, cryptic is being crazy generous to free players.

Thanks for all the replies!

I guess I'll hold off for now unless I spot it on sale for $2 bucks somewhere. I'm not much interested in the retail extras.

Sounds like Cryptic isn't giving any "VIP" unlocks like Turbine did for past subs.

I'll just finish out my trial and hope I get to keep most of my ships, characters and credits (currently 5 ships on my main and 4 characters: 3 UFP, 1 KDF) .

I've started my re-obsession with STO to gear up before the F2P kicks in. Once I get to VA with my engineer, I'll be hitting up the STFs again for the new borg loot. I never did the Undine STF because I heard it was broken/retarded hard, but I suppose I'll give it a shot.

They desperately need to redo that damn skill tree though. Boy does it suck. I remember I actually wrote out a detailed revamp to the skill tree, but was too disinterested at that point to post it up. I need to try viral matrix again, but my memory was that the nerf to it made it useless.
