CAGbag: Get your questions answered on CAGcast

Do you think Wombat's new job is hurting his gig on the cagcast?
I mean, he doesn't really seem to play anything, has no time to do anything other than talk on Tuesday nights (unless his boss makes him stay) and he's coming up with some horrible business related thoughts. Wombat, do us a favor and find a part time gig.

Since Wombat is a self-confessed Oblivion-whore, I'd like to get his take on the downloadable content available on XBL.

So how about it, Wombat?

Yay or nay on the following:

  • Horse Armor
    [*]Knights of the Nine Quest
    [*]Mehrune's Razor Quest
    [*]Orrery Quest
    [*]Shivering Isles
    [*]Spell Tomes
    [*]Wizard's Tower
    [*]Thieves Den
    [*]Vile Lair

Hey Cheapy, do you or Wombat know of anyway to play Japanese 360 titles on an American 360? I'm dying to play a bunch Japan only titles (like Id@lMaster), but I'd prefer to not have to buy a whole new Japanese Xbox in order to do that!

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

Just finished listening to CAGcast #70, excellent show, very entertaining as ever, good job.

The question I have is do you think there's too much Fanboy flaming going on in the format specific forums on CAG these days? There's been a lot of inflamatory topics posted on the 360 and PS3 forums recently and I've seen a couple get shut down by the Mods.

I kinda got caught up in it a bit but have seen the error of my ways and was glad to see the threads get shut, but do you guys think there's a place for it in the forums or not ?

Maybe we could have a general "The 360/PS3/Wii/PSP/DS is teh suxxx because........." thread.

Thanks Guys.

Cheapy - What ever happened to your appearance on the Joystiq podcast? Lost to the ages? To be re-released decades from now in the Joystiq Podcast box set?

Hey guys, what is your take on videogame journalism? Can it really be considered journalism if the industry is full of NDAs and PR people dictating what information is released about a game?

First off, let me say that you guys are the best thing to listen to after coming home each week after a bender at the bar. While the girlfriend thinks that I am looking up porn all buzzed up at three in the morning, I find it ironic that its you two guys that is grabbing my attention till the wee hours of the morning.

Anyway, an issue that has bugged me in these morning sessions......is there anyway that you can disclose what game the opening blip comes from every week? Every week its on the tip of the tongue, but my clouded state causes me to fail to call it 9 times out of ten.

Is the demise of the Gamer Gift Card at Best Buy the last really good, reliable all the time B&M game deal? I can't think of any other alternatives, but no GGC is going to really reduce my impulse $20-30 budget purchases from now on. (perhaps a good thing for my budget overall) I'm sure other CAGs are lamenting this long running deal disappearing.

Ideally, they'll resurrect the card someday, as has happened before, but it's looking rather grim.

Further suggestion, since so many people are interested in the intro music, why not try having a game music trivia contest one week? That could be good fun, and not too easily ruined by wikipedia.

Sup Cheap,

Your mom sounds hot.

Um, is this GTA going to have enjoyable cut scenes, or is rockstar still not giving 2 shits about stories and cut scenes?

Guess I should have waited a day to ask...

You guys have recently mentioned a lack of interesting games coming for the Wii. You aren't playing it because the games are kinda boring. Well, being a fan boy, I first rejected the idea. However, I have come to realize that I myself haven't been playing mine either. I get games that are fun for a bit, then grow old. Then I realized that my "non-gamer" friends play the crap out of it. Every game gets played and played. Wii Sports is the most popular game amongst my friends ever, and I haven't played it in months. Could this be a sign of Nintendo's success? They are targeting "non-gamers". Cheapy, you played Wii Sports with the Family and they loved it. I think it shows the difference in target audiences between the Wii and the other 2 next gen systems. I just hope the more serious gamers don't get lost on the Wii. The potential is there.

In one of your CAGcasts, you both mentioned how Microsoft is forcing game developers to distribute downloadable content for a price instead of just giving it away for free. Then you both said that it makes sense because they need to pay for server upkeep costs. Did you two forget about the $50 a year that Xbox Live Gold members have to pay? It just seems to me that Microsoft just wants more money. The subscription costs are more than enough to cover the costs for the servers and such.

Buying stuff off the marketplace is free, playing online isn't.

Why are company website stores so awful? Tons of game publishers have a chance to cut out the middle man and supply their product directly to the consumer. Why don't they just give us the savings the middle man adds in order to make a profit?

Hello Cheapy and Wombat,

I've been enjoying the podcasts for a long time now and finally decided to join the CAG community.

What do each of you think about the drip feeding of screens and little vids that are released to create hype for titles, do you think it's a good thing or a bad thing?

It really annoys me when we're given screens and clips of pre-alpha build gameplay when the game is months away from being released. The most recent example of this is the clip of Fable 2 where a game that isn't going to be released THIS YEAR is shown off. The game is so early in development there's no telling if anything that was shown will be in the final game.

So, is it good or bad?

Hey Cheapy and Wombat.

In reference Wombat's advertising idea, there's an easier alternative that could be used in games that regular in game advertsising wouldn't fit ( ex Tony Hawk's Project 8 in comparison to Gears of War). They could just put the advertisements in places that aren't during the gameplay. If it's at the " press start " screen or the opening of the game, or even at some of the menus, then it wouldn't be too intrusive to the fantasy feel of the game.

For Example: You're in a multiplayer match on Gears Of War where the map is Old Bones. If you saw something that said " Sponsored by ( discovery channel logo) would it really even affect you? I think not. Plus advertisers get what they want, too. Although a person does spend more time in the gameplay that in the menus/ press start screen/ opening, at those points seeing it is inevitable.

Commercials in games would be too far through. A " Sponsored By ______" is enough in games where real world advertisements owuldn't see fit.

Hey cheapy and wombat, i just noticed that the new intern over at 1up calls himself rocksolidaudio, is he the cag of the same name?

Cheapy,

Heard you on the Joystiq podcast...Good stuff. The podtoid appearance was better imo. Don't know what to think about the British sounding dude from the Motherland. He seems kind of lame.

Have you, or know anyone, that has used the PS3's remote function? Don't know what exactly it is called, but it is the function that let's you use your PSP to view content stored on your PS3 via wifi. 1up talked about it last week. Supposedly Tmobile is the only hotspots you can use. 1up mentioned that the first 6 months are free, then you pay an unknown amount after that.

Hello!
You guys mentioned the newly announced game, "Rock Band," last CAGcast and I was wondering why the game has gotten so much buzz. Emphasis on announced. There are almost no details about the game, except for how the game obviously works and record labels involved, and yet the hype wagon is all revved up and all ready to go:

Joystiq: USA Today Announcement

Kotaku: Announcement

Kotaku: Date & Details

Kotaku: Rock Band Possibly on Wii

Kotaku: Gamestop Rock Band Accessories Listed

Kotaku: Rock Band to Support GH Guitars

Joystiq: Rock Band to Support GH Guitars

Kotaku: Harmonix Debunks Pricing Rumors

Penny Arcade: A Comic about Rock Band

So my question to you guys is do you think some of these, "Game blogs," or dare I say, "Web-comics," are getting paid to virally report on certain games? And if so, your thoughts?

Hey guys! Where do you think gaming in the home is going? I know neither of you are really PC gamers, so do you think the PC will continue to lose mass support as a gaming platform? Will we just keep buying better versions of gaming consoles? Or will the Microsoft dream of an all-in-one PC/Console/Media Center come to fruition? Is the marketplace big enough for all three indefinitely? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Gentlemen, I am absolutely in love with the phrase, "Buyer's Wii-gret" when describing the Wii.

I bought it because my wife really wanted it, and it was fun, at first. (I even stopped playing Zelda 30 minutes in - goatherding isn't exactly my cup of tea.)

Now, it seems like people are desparately trying to defend the Wii, going so far as to get riled up with the word "fad" is used in association.

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to play some good games on the Wii, but now I'm more interested in using it as a GameCube.

Which leads me to my question(s): If there were more Wiis in the retail channel, do you think that the general public's opinion would sway to that of "wii-gret?" Could this be why Nintendo "supposedly" has been holding back the flow of consoles to the consumer?

Hey guys great show, I always listen to it even if you guy DO talk about Oblivion to much.

Anyway, what I wanted to say was, do you guys find that the Wii is getting an unjust and unreasonable amount of praise because of it's 250 dollar price tag? I know that this IS Cheap Ass Gamer, so people obviously appreciate that, but honestly, I would say it's almost impossible to have the Wii as your only 'next-gen' system and yet many CAGs and gamers in general seem to do just that.

Just wondering what your thoughts were on the unfair praise being given to the Wii so far in it's life cycle, considering all it's really showed so far is Wii Sports. (Zelda and Super Paper Mario were/are GC games)

You guys were all excited about Guitar Hero II's DLC in the last podcast and now that the song packs are out at around $6 (500 pts.) for just 3 songs, what are your thoughts about the DLC now? Do these releases hurt the potential long life that you thought the game had when the DLC was first announced or is it a bump in the road for you guys? Will there be a Lumines-sized backlash against the GHII's DLC? Do you regret waiting five months to get Guitar Hero II on the 360 instead of getting it for the PS2?

What is the point of downloading a trailer, video clip or commercial on the Xbox Live Marketplace if I can get it streamed instantly to me via my computer instead of waiting 15 minutes?

Hi Cheapy and Wombat,

Both of you seem to be PC users and seem well versed in the PC world. My question is have either of you tried using an apple computer and how do you feel about the future of gaming on the platform. I know they have about 5% market share but a lot of reports are showing that it is on the upswing. Please no jokes about how the only games are photoshop.

Ok, I'll reword the question to avoid getting anyone upset. In response to Wombat's comments on the "Rock Band" coverage:

Do you guys think that certain gaming publications are getting paid to virally report on certain games? Take Penny-Arcade's "Rock Band" comic. We know nothing about the game and they've already told their fans to be pysched about it.

Tsh, probably more an issue of independent news sites being full of shit and nobody calling them on it because they themselves are full of shit, too.

I know this is a really stupid newb question. However, I can't seem to find the answer. Anyways, What does OP mean? You alway here CAGers say thanks OP.

Hi Cheapy and Wombat,

I would like to here what Wombat and yours thoughts on developers pretty much pulling a "Madden" in the next gen, by slowly adding in options that we had in past gens game -
*Amped 3 has zero multilayer where Amped 2 did
*Tony Hawk Project 8 having less custom skater options then in TH2
*GoW, RB6:Vegas, GRAW having zero Clan support/less multilayer options where Ghost Recon on xbox and PS2 did. Then putting clan support in GRAW 2 as some major highlight
*Splinter Cell Double Agent had co-op pulled out (best part of a game that has had the exact same game play since Splinter Cell 1)
*Guitar Hero 2 ships with no multilayer while Rockband and Guitar Hero 3 will.

With the news that Guitar Hero 3 will have a wireless guitar and online multiplayer this just futhers my complaint that companies are lazy and think they only way people will buy a new game in the seires is if they add one new skill/trick/move per game(The Tony Hawk series is a prefect example).

A question for Cheapy:

One of my recent obsessions has been the search for the perfect shave. Though I do not shave my head , it seems like head-shavers always have the best shaving tips because they have so much more surface area to cover. What's your preferred shaving ritual? Do you use different methods for your head and your face? Do you consider yourself a particularly well-shaven man?

I know these have nothing to do with cheap-ass gaming but we both know that 99.926% of all CAGcast listeners are men, so this is important, dammit.

CheapyD, Wombat, why not have a Digg the CAGcast contest? I feel bad because I only just got around to it myself, but if you gave me the possibility of winning sweet sweet loot my cheapass would have done it in an instant! You could verify the winner Dugg the CAGcast by requiring the winner to sign up for Digg using their CAG username. People who have Digg accounts already might have to sign up for a second one but I'm sure they wouldn't mind for the chance of winning say a Wii, or a healthy sum of playasia credit. Maybe run it for like a month.

I think you'd destroy Major Nelson if you did this!

One of my favorite game developers is Capcom. What did you guys think about all the latest announcements from Capcom this past week? Any hits or misses? Do you think Capcom has the right balance of new IP to go along the requisite cross-platform and re-releases they seem to love, or are they not doing enough original games to bring in new audiences?

Also, Cheapy, can you find out when the next Play Asia 20% off sale is? I wants an import PS2. :D

Dear Cheapy and Wombat

With the latest dashboard update on Xbox Live, do you think Microsoft is skipping over the gamers and doing more to entice younger people over to the 360? I know the teenagers love the text messaging.

Rather than focus on text, don't you think Microsoft would be better served to work on something most of the Xbox Live Gold members might care about such as improved voice chat? What do you think they should concentrate on?

correct me if i'm wrong but Microsoft is improving the voice chat along with this update...your supposed to be able to talk to multiple people at the same time...sorta like a "chat room"
also...Cheapy...seems like MS heard you complaining...a while back you wished that the 360 would have a auto power off feature after it finishes downloading...

do you feel like Nintendo is pretty much screwing people over with the lack of games for the wii?
going into what Wombat said about the DS being so successful and why Wii isnt just expanding on it...i think that people would want a brand new game rather than a port...

as far as PS3 goes...Cheapy...since you have the system...do you think its "WORTH" $600? is the system that powerful and great that paying $600 is ok? besides the lack of games...(cuz that'll change in due time) could this system justify spending that much money or could this system have been priced differently and be "worth" that new price...

Hey guys, first time poster, keep up the good work. I was just wondering what types of movies you guys are into? Besides Wombat mentioning that he liked Grindhouse and Cheapy's non-sexual(?) obsession with Robo Cop, you guys have been pretty negative about any movies you've talked about on the show ("300" for example). Just wondering what some of your favorites are.

Cheapy and Wombat

I write in defense of cut scenes in response to Wombat's statement that if a game uses cut scenes, the game isn't doing its job in telling the story.

I just finished God of War, yes the first one, over the weekend. I put it at the top of the list of games that have beautiful cut scenes (rendered in this case) and are truly integral to advancing the story. I can't imagine the story of Kratos being told any other way. Does anyone really think that story colud of have told any other way? The approach also added the cinematic feel the developers wanted to boot.

Sure that's one example and some game blow it in their implementation. In short, the in-game cinematics should be judged like graphics, gameplay, multi-player implementation, etc.; on how they add or detract from the enjoyment of the game. It is that simple.

Wombat should loosen up on this one.

I have a question for Cheapy.

I was sittin on MySpace reading some bulletins my friends made, and this one guy who I went to high school with lives in Japan now, had filled out one of them stupid surveys. Ya know "Favorite Gum?! "Favorite Teacher?!" (Yeah, THOSE stupid surveys..) But one of the question was "On average, what size tip do you leave at a restaurant?" and his answer was "0%! It's not allowed here!". Now I'm not sure if you talked about this before, but if you could maybe answer..WHY???

Kinda funny how in other cultures leaving a tip is wrong, and in America you get talked about if you leave a small tip/none at all!
I know this is a really stupid newb question. However, I can't seem to find the answer. Anyways, What does OP mean? You alway here CAGers say thanks OP.
OP = Original Poster aka the person that started the thread.

This question is more for the "Your Man In Japan" segment than the regular videogame news and discussion.

Just the other day, I was watching Jaws on the Universal HD station and, for some reason, I thought Quint's "I'm talking about SHARKING!!" line to be hilarious. It's odd because I never thought it was funny before.

Fast forward to today, and out of curiosity, I google'd 'sharking' to get this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharking

Which lead me to something very odd indeed:

Sharking refers to a form of malicious prank that has supposedly become fairly popular in Japan. In the act of sharking, the perpetrator sneaks up on a victim in a public area in open view and forcefully exposes the victim's intimate parts to be seen by the public for a brief moment before running away. It is very similar to the common schoolyard prank of pantsing practiced by bullies, although sharking is done for the sexual stimulation of the perpetrator, whereas pantsing is done solely for the humiliation of the victim.

My questions are:

1. What the fuck is wrong with Japanese people?!

2. Cheapy, have you ever been the Sharker or the Sharkee?

Why is Wombat so negative about the Virtual Console? In the past few weeks you've both been complaining about the Wii having few good games, yet I've been busy playing retro classics such as. Splatterhouse, New Adventure Island, Sword of Vermillion, Gunstar Heroes, Starfox 64, Kirby's Adventure and more, all one small system. It's the ultimate nostalgia trip for true videogame fans.

One a side note, Wombat constantly complains these retro games are too expensive, yet he regularly gets raped by Gamestop on "trade in 2 games get 1 free" deals. It doesn't make a lick of sense to slowly bleed money into Gamestop. Thus, Wombat seems to be neither a collector of games or an appreciator of game history. So why's he on the show at all? He's broke, stupid, and annoying.

kind regards,
LSpear76

HEY, ANSWER THIS ONE!

Cheapy D, can you please answer as to why Rich Uncle Pennybag's (aka Mr. Monopoly) has NOT RETURNED to Cheap Ass Gamer? He's been missing for a long time. As of this post, 81% of users who remember him want him back. Link'd here>
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133839

*Note that Wombat was cranky and, "that guy", in voting (in the 19% minority) that he did not want Mr. Monopoly back

Monopoly_Mascot.jpg

Hey Wombat,

After hearing about your fascination with RWii4, I was just wondering if you've tried GameCube backwards compatability on your Wii?

You know how some reviews say things like "its more of the same" or "you've played this game thousand times before" and the game gets a lower the score because of it. What I was thinking is that the new game should not get a lower score than the frist one just because it's just like the first one.

A few Dynasty Warriors games have actually gotten lower scores than the first game in the series because its more of the same. My thinking is if it is the same as the last game it would get the same score, but it doesn't beacuse the frist one was new and you never play anything like it.

Which brings me to my next point, people that have played bejeweled to death were not so happy with puzzle quest. I have never played bejeweled, I own puzzle quest and I think it is the best game for the psp bar none. So I guess I'm saying someone that is not exposed to an over use gameplay macanic will mostly like alot more just like someone who has never had a 360 but does have a ps3 will get much more enjoyment out of the ps3.

very sorry if didn't even ask a question through all that I just post somthing I thought up and though was interseting, I await people to tell me "well duh"
to all of that thank you.
