CAGcast #95: Baby On Board

Oh no....Wombat your site is blocked for me, will have to check it out at home. Cant wait to see what you come up with, good luck with your endeavor.

"Why is your penis so small?" had me laughing hysterically. Thanks, Wombat!

Cheapy channeled Howard Stern while giving his response to the guy who turned off the Cagcast.

Oh, and congratulations on securing ads for the U.S. Marine Corp. Transportation Dept., Oops, I mean the Navy.
Wombat kinda looks like a pedophile in this video. Like one of those guys on DateLine NBC "To Catch a Predator." LOL.
You took the words right out of my mouth. Wow now I see why we have never seen pictures of this guy... He is like a caricature of
the president of NAMLBA.

Just heard the beginning and already...shill-cast...I guess it was inevitable since Cheapy's got a mouth to feed, now I wonder what other ads will I be hearing....
I dunno.. selling Preperation H to gamers makes perfect sense to me.
A few minutes in and I'm greeted by the Navy trying to recruit me. Yay. Some have actually expended time and energy to bar the ability of the military industrial complex to indoctrinate and cooerce.

I don't have any problems with ads per se, but the Navy? I know us listeners are the demo they are trying to target, but come on. Why you gotta take their blood money cheapy? I got no problems with you getting paid, but I'd rather listen to a head-on commercial.

The problem with the ads is, THEY INTERUPT the flow of action. I hate the now is a time for a break s***. That's raping the CAGcast of it's virginity. It's no longer pure. If you want to put one ad at the very end instead of the classic tv ads, thats fine. To start the show and have some in the middle of the show, makes you look like a slut compared to a virgin.

The cherry has been popped.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat...another great show in the books.

I wanted to comment on your Guitar Hero difficulty setting opinions. I agree that some added options to the difficulty settings would be a welcomed addition to the Guitar Hero series. I suggest they add a custom setting to the preexisting four settings. In this custom setting you can select:

How many fret buttons are used (3,4,5)
How many notes are used in a song
How harshly you are judged (how far your rock meter falls with each missed note)

I'm pretty much a medium player, and I wish I had a reason to dust off my orange button. I have wanted this type of difficulty setting since Guitar Hero 1 has come out, but I'm to lazy to even submit a suggestion to a developer.

i just turend 17 over the summer and get tons of crap in the mail tryign to get me to join the army, navy, marines, air force, & national guard, now i gotta listen to the crap in my favorite podcast too?

i dont really mind ads in podcast, since podcasting is a non profit hobby, i dont mind the podcaster's wanting to get a little cash on the side. but the navy?
id rather have something tech related
and also, all of the other podcasts i listen to that have ads, only have 1 ad, either the "This show is brought to you by..." at the beggining, or a 30 second in the middle, i think all 3 is to many.

Let's not be over dramatic here, all money in a capitalist society is blood money if you want to get technical. It's not like there's a giant list of sponsors out there banging down the door trying to get their ads on the CAGcast. The Navy made an offer, and to create the perception in the minds of other businesses that the show can be sponsored Cheapy accepted. If someone manages to get indoctrinated from a 30 second commercial that basically says "Hey join the Navy", then don't blame the CAGcast, blame their parents.

View the ads for what they are as a stepping stone to bigger things.

I hear ya Levizk, but why start at the bottom of the barrel? I'm not going to profess to know what cheapy went through in his ad selection process, but as a largely educated, and adult audience (per the listener survey of a short while ago), I would have expected something apart from what usually fuels the main stream media establishment.

If I wanna watch adult swim on cable, I gotta sit through an ad for each branch of the military before my 30 min show is over. After a while it gets old, and I just buy the DVD's.

I see you took down the very disturbing video of you dressed in a diaper; sucking on a pacifier,Cheapy.

Anyway,I didnt like the sponsor. If you wanted to get more recognition from the game companies you should have offered free two 30 seconds ads in the show, instead of having a sponsor who has nothing to do with the industry and getting paidz.By doing this you might get free review copies of games and prizes for the show. The idea is here is to get attention for the CAGcast.

Blood money? I'm assuming you live in U.S. borders, so you are enjoying the benefits of the armed service. They are the defenders of free speech. Try to get on the net, let alone post something negative about the state in North Korea or Myanmar.

Do you really think CAG listeners will be so persuaded by the sounds of Keith's David's voice that they will drop their controller and run for the nearest recruitment depot? If you do, Jack Thompson's looking for a few good interns.

A double standard? I remember the fracas over the Twilight Princess score and how people defended Gamespot then - to me, the Aaron Thomas review pretty clearly states why the game isn't an 8 or a 9:

It's too easy, the story falls flat, and the "throw everything in including the kitchen sink" style of gameplay takes too much of the focus off the tight platforming and fun combat.

Being a R&C fan myself, I can see how too much extraneous stuff would distract from the platforming and shooting action.

I'm glad you guys are enjoying Half-Life 2 - brings back fond memories. I bought that game the first weekend it came out (man, three years ago) and I beat it in one nonstop, 12 hours session.

Major Nelson - I agree with Wombat. It's nice to know what the community manager of Xbox live thinks even if he's not going to say "That's a good idea, just a sec... done."

Manhunt 2 - The big problem with all the violent videogame stories in the mainstream media is that they think videogames are made exclusively for kids. Once they understand that some games, like some movies, are being made for adults, then the occurrences of these ridiculous "news pieces" will slow down.

Ratchet and Clank - I liked your comments on the R&C review Wombat. I don't read Gamespot's reviews (I don't like my game reviews to be written like a consumer report) but I did look through it when I saw the fairly low score. BTW, I think means 7.5 it's a good game that has flaws and is really only recommendable if you're a fan of the genre or the source material as opposed to a 7.5 meaning that "you don't like the game". Also, I said this last time but R&C is MOTS done right. The second game added circle strafing and the third added an all-in-one gadget (finally no more pausing to equip the right gadget!). These, plus new weapons and everything else they added, make the next game in the series better that the last.

Orange Box - Cheapy, how can you not know where you're going in TF2? There are signs everywhere saying "Capture Point" with arrows pointing you in the right direction! I think it's one of the genius parts of that game, you couldn't get away with signs and arrows in a shooter with a realistic style but it fits in the world of TF2. Wombat, don't do the show again until you finish Portal. It's way too good to play anything else until you finish.

The ads were good. But can you find someone with a little more of a gruff voice. That guy in the Navy ads sounded like a total wimp.

Fanboy-ism - When someone bashes your system of choice then it's ok to defend it, but you still need to be aware of the weaknesses of your system so that you don't go off sounding like an idiot. If someone says PC gaming is dead, then I'll point out why I feel that's not true. If someone says PC gaming is expensive, then I can see their point. Same with the PS3. There are less exclusive games and more reasons to choose Xbox when it comes to multiplatform games. If you can't stand to hear that, try plugging your ears for the next 6 months.

CheapyD, couldn't you find a different sponsor for the Cagcast. The military! The MILITARY! What, Satan didn't offer you enough? This is just proliferating the belief that games desensitize people to violence and that they are murder simulators. The military thinks, "Kids like killing people in games, so they must like killing real people! Join the military and instead of prison, you get rewarded for murdering people!" I will still listen to the podcast, but I will never, ever buy a game through your links. I don't care if you give the ad money to charity, you are sending listeners to their deaths in the Persian gulf. "Accelerate your life!" That's right join the navy and your life will be over before you knew what hit you.

So because we enjoy all the benefits of 1st world countries we as citizens are endebted to the US military? I would say that the the global market's faith in the U.S. economy is actually more deserving of credit for maintaining security than our continually weakening military force, beause without such an economy, we couldn't maintain an industry that mostly produces destruction - something of little value.

I do respect the vast majority of CAGs as people who won't blindly follow an advertisment like sheep, but the value of ad dollars just doesn't seem to be a justifiable benefit when the cost could be one death of a peer for a goal that is undefined, and quite possibly futile.

I'm sorry if I've gone off into the political realm. I don't want to get this topic off track, just wanted to let my feelings be know.
I'm sorry if I've gone off into the political realm. I don't want to get this topic off track, just wanted to let my feelings be know.
Well you and the others who talking about the politics of the the military are taking this thread off topic.

If you wan't to debate the military, take it to the off topic boards. If you want to debate whether or not Navy ads should be in the podcast... I'd rather it go to a seperate thread, but I'm no moderator.

I want the Wii version. I think you should keep the PSP version, because you can take it on the go, squeeze in minutes at work or when you aren't posing on UGO.
Discuss our bitches with us, not some stupid contest.
Excellent choice of words. I shall talk about them, on CAGcast #96.
p.s.
I'm glad you are enjoying the contests.

There are people that are offended by the ads? Wow.

It's nice to see a PS3 game not being crapped on, though Cheapy doesn't have Ratchet yet, so he could come back and crap on another Insomniac game. :D ;) Wombat, keep playing Ratchet since it's a great game. I'm going through it again on Challenge mode and I never play through games again, so it's definitely a compelling game.

I hope you guys talk about the Warhawk patches in the next show. Add the Resistance patches to that while you're at it.

Good, long show.

Hey Cheapy I like the ads. I don't know why everyone getting all up in arms for. All this talk about "blood money" and other nonsense. Geez, it is just a Navy commerical. Oh well, some people will always take things way over the top. I think you should donate to Child's Play. It is game related and a good cause.

Also Wombat good luck on the blog. I did put it in my favorites to show my support. Keep living the dream man.

*hands you a napkin to whip the ******* off your face*

Who the hell likes ads... let alone when they cause the show to stop and lose it's momentum.

It starts with one... or in this case 3 ads and a plug at the start. Soon they will be just like all the other stupid podcasts out there. Pretty soon, they will have a 133t section where you have to pay for it.

You want an ad, put it at the end of the damn show so it doesn't hurt the product.

Hey Navy, no one is going to join you because you advertise to gamers. Most are lazy, out of shape, and morons. Not exactly the cream of the crop... then again, it is the Navy.

That had to be one of the most amusing opening 15-20 minutes of a Podcast I have ever heard. Tales of fatherhood from an interesting perspective and recounting, no doubt.

I'm sorry to hear that fast-forwarding is so traumatizing.

I enjoyed how Cheapy cut into the recording a few times and recorded over it with "Alright Wombat, lets take a 30 second break!" Gave me a chuckle.

I think it's cool that the Navy is putting ads in your podcast, I actually said "Oh, wow." when I heard they were sponsering it at the beginning. Congrats about that.
"The women actually cry in japanese porno. They're supposed to be very submissive and not really enjoying it...

*long pause.....*

Or... that's what I've heard.... I mean... um... uh... somebody told me that."
suuuuure. Seriously, Cheapy, going for the "somebody told me that" excuse? Pathetic.

EDIT:

Shema?

So now you're telling us your wife's name? Crrrrzy!!! Now I'm just wondering about Wombat. (Stewart, Spencer?)
Join the military and instead of prison, you get rewarded for murdering people!
Some people like myself joined for the benefits. I would have never been able to afford college if it wasn't for the GI Bill. Additionally, I made some life-long friends, improved my self-confidence, and was in the best shape of my life.

You've heard Cheapy's explanation for the ads; it's not about politics, it's about the credibility of the show and its hosts. Cheapy and Wombat work hard every week to bring you the show. Can't everyone listen to a short ad?

Hey Transformers was a pretty good mindless flick. I guess I was expecting worse and I'm not a Transformers fan either.

Congrats on your first child!!! I have a 1 yr old and a 6 yr old. Your life will change, but you won't realize it yet for awhile.

A great online game and a great online game to play if you have kids is Battlefield 2 especially on 64 player servers with strangers. With that many people it doesn't matter much if you have to take a few minute break. You can just duck into a building somewhere on the map or just not spawn in. Attend to your kid and hop back in. You don't notice a few guys missing when you have 32 players on a side.

I've been playing WoW lately too and that's not quite as good for Dads, but if you're soloing it or playing with a bud who doesn't mind taking breaks here and there isn't much worry if you have to suddenly leave. And when you log in, you start in the same spot where you logged out last time.

Of course sp games are good and Nintendo games are too as your kid get a bit older and you don't want him watching you decapitate zombies.

The ads were sort of weird to hear and a little distracting, but nothing to get pissed off about.

Though, I did want to choke Wombat for playing devil's advocate to the "content vs disc" argument.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to comment on the new releases you guys went over. Battalion Wars is sort of an offshoot of Advance Wars, it is a RTS in the sense that you can control all of your troops and order them commands. However it is like Battlefield like you said where you can hop in and out of any of the soldiers in your troop on the fly. This includes foot soldiers, aircraft, naval units, and tanks. I was a huge fan of the first Battalion Wars on the GC, and I just picked up the new on yesterday. So far about 3 hours in I enjoy it much more than the first one. Controls work very well on the wiimote, and don't feel forced. The big thing really is the online modes this time around. There are online skirmishes, and then online co-op, which is pretty awesome. Just figured I would fill you guys in a little bit, because it definitely is a sleeper hit.

Loved the cagcast, congratulations CheapyD on the little one, and congrats to Wombat on UGO, can't wait to read your blog.

You probably enlisted during peacetime, or right after 9/11, when it made sense. Now the military is so far behind on their enlistment numbers, that they have to advertise like crazy to fill their ranks. If this doesn't work, they will probably bring back the draft. Some will say that will never happen, I say you can't trust freedom when it's not in your hands. Here's an idea, recruit at prisons, send them to Iraq, if they survive 2 tours of duty, they will be given a pardon. That will end prison overcrowding and allow the military to meet their quota.

Cheapy, Wombat, Im glad you guys are back. The week without you was one boring week at work. I felt that this was a pretty good quality show and it didnt hurt to hear my name in it.

First off with the ads. I dont think its that big of a deal. You got to start somewhere and if wombat gets a little green from this i say its worth it. The guy doesnt get much money from doing the podcast so let it be for now. Perhaps the cagcast can move on to better more relevant ads the further the show goes on. When i hear ads on the 1up yours podcast its just whatever, john or some chick speaks says a bunch of words and you move on. Im just surprised no one made a simpsons reference yet regarding the navy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdfs_UAq-Vo

Thanks for sharing the story of tai's birth cheapy. Your porn acting was great and im sure it will be used against you sometime later. Congrats to wombat on being a paid blogger. I think it would be funny if we got to hear a Mrs Wombat review of Hannah Montana although im sure it wont really convince anyone to get it.

Wombats moms intro was great. It should be used when cheapy doesnt want to do a show and wombat goes solo or has a special guest.

this cagcast stood out to me more than the last few in quality guys so im looking forward to more entertaining cagcasts

I just wanted to chime about wombat's disappoint with cross songs in RB and GH3. It's not like these developers knew what the other was getting in ways of songs. I'm sure they sat down with their respect company and said, "hey, lets get this song!" Not so much calling their competitor asking if they were getting that song as well. With two giant games like this competing there is bound to be over lap like this. No one could avoid it.

Now the thing is this. RB has already announced 2 ALBUMS for DLC. Gh3 has nothing. With MTV backing up RB, we know it's only going to get better. So you have 5 songs or whatever that are the same. Big deal? In the end RB has better gamplay and will feature more songs. The real winner is clear. Those over lapped songs are nothing to fret and shouldn't detour you to think one is better than the other.

Great show again guys!!! As much as i hate the military industrial complex, i really didn't mind the navy ads. Afterall, anything with the voice of Arby the Arbiter (Keith David) kick ass! On the other hand, that's probably the reason why I hated Transformers so much, some parts of the film were basically a military recruitment ad. Michael Bay actually admits that he wanted to paint the soldiers in a positive light for recruitment purposes. BTW, any hollywood movie that includes the use of military hardware, must have the script sent to the Pentagon for approval. Go figure...

In all honesty, if the navy ads, or anything military related get too invasive on your podcast, i'll have to stop listening. But then again, I'm very impressed that you'll be donating the money. Kudos!

Once again, great analysis of the upcoming games, so what do you guys think of Street Fighter 4 and Street Fighter II HD? How do you feel about Capcom giving so much love to the 360 & DS but not the PS3?

About Manhunt 2, remember, all publicity is good publicity. Notice all the Hillary Clinton name dropping in the media lately? Whether it's good or bad, they're conditioning the mind for the posibility of another Clinton in the White House. BTW, Rupert Murdoch (media mogul) has been openly meeting with Hillary to strategize. Go figure...

Lastly, HEY CAGS! if you're a senior in high school, DON'T JOIN THE MILITARY!
The military is no longer the defenders of the constitution. They are mercinaries for the central banks and oil cartels. We lost this country in 1913, with the passing of the Federal Reserve Act, and the illegal income tax law. America: From Freedom to Fascism

The ads were fine with me, far better than listening to the real radio. Though I did find them pretty funny, "Who's the most beloved Navy in the whole world? Err.. well... I guess us. We built a hospital once... ya..."

I really enjoyed the discussion about Manhunt 2. I think Cheapy hit the nail on the head with his remarks. The CBS Nightly News is doing so poorly they will do absolutely anything to improve ratings, even if it means trying to make a sacrificial lamb out of the video game industry. I mean, I can't really blame them though, the game comes with glass shards. You could cut open your hand opening it!

Navy.

Accelerate Your LIfe.

And what's wrong with a nigga trying to make a profit? If you listened to previous podcasts, they really tried to work things out so it didn't hurt the show much. It wasn't just " ok lets just put these ads in here as much as we can get ".

Also, yeah, Cheapy was keeping it real there, Pyro. No other man would admit that they got "excited" in a room where various Japanese women were in labor. He keeps it real.
