CAGcast #95: Baby On Board

Cheapy, what's up with the "on deck circle" and cloth dividers between multiple women giving birth? WTF? Here you (generally) get the nice hotel-room like suite and THAT is where you also have the baby. Only AFTER you have the baby do you get moved to a crappy regular hospital room ;).

Anyway, my wife and I are always jealous of the people who just have their water break like that, although it looks like it stalled after that (if she needed induction to proceed). We're on our 4th now and she's never had her water break. She's due any time now and we know it won't happen that way - we're in for another 12-18 hour induction session. But kudos to Mrs. Cheapy for going pain-FULL on the delivery. It is particularly painful if you go with the induction, as well, since those artificially-induced contractions are more painful (so I'm told ;)). So be very nice to her!

holy crap, the Navy is sponsoring the CAGcast! sign me up! o wait...i don't swim...

anyways, that whole hospital/porno story was friggin hilarious! congrats to you and your wife, Cheapy. i can't believe you compared your son to that dude in Star Wars tho, lol. i'm sure Tai would love to hear this replay when he's older. XD

congrats to Wombat on your new job too. UGO's current game blog is not so good so i hope you fix it up good. i will definitely contribute when i can. ^.^

btw, i agree with this JimmyMac guy, E4 ROCKS!

The Navy? The YMCA? Is there some unwritten rule that the CAGcast can only consider ads from organizations endorsed by The Village People? What’s next, ads seeking Macho Men?

In all seriousness, I have to say I was more than a little disappointed in Cheapy for running recruitment ads. Let me be clear (and distance myself from lspear as much as possible): I have no problem whatsoever with ads in the CAGcast. Cheapy and Wombat deserve to get paid for what they do. Moreover, my father served in the U.S. Navy for 15 years, and flew A4’s and A7’s in Vietnam, so it’s not like I’m irrationally anti-military. But as others in this thread have said, the vast majority of folks listening to this show already get the full court press from military recruiters as it is. They don’t need it from their favorite video game podcast as well.

I understand Cheapy has tried to mitigate the controversy somewhat by donating his share of the ad revenue. That’s fine. But I think he is flat out wrong in thinking that running Navy ads will earn him some kind of respect or prestige from within the gaming industry or in the media at large. You can't buy credibility. If anything, it could have the opposite effect. The Penny Arcade guys, who are among the most beloved and unassailable personalities in the video game industry, took considerable heat for allowing Army recruiters to set up shop at PAX this year. And rightfully so.

Military recruiting among gamers perpetuates the stereotype that gamers who enjoy blowing up and killing things in the virtual world would like nothing more than the opportunity to blow up and kill things in the real world. It also validates the U.S. military’s tactic of suggesting that going to war is just like playing a video game (“America’s Army” being the most blatant example of this flawed logic). Failure to recognize this ethical compromise suggests, at best, crippling naiveté, and at worst, cynical opportunism.

Please Cheapy, run all the ads you want. Just avoid the ones that encourage your listeners to sign their lives away.

[RANT OVER]

Loved the rest of the show, especially Cheapy's great retelling of the birth of Tai. Played it for my wife last night, who listened with great interest. Also confirmed her ongoing suspcion that you are a big 'ol perv. But she says congratulations, and was very glad you guys went with natural childbirth.

Congrats also to Wombat. Keep reaching for the stars, my friend!

Cheapy going nuts over Katie Couric was hillarious. "Where's that glass shard, I wanna shove it right in her neck."

Congrats also to Wombat. Keep reaching for the stars, my friend!
I'm not sure that's a fair assessment. You yourself are making those statements with the mindset that the only reason gamers would go into the military would be to "blow shit up". You propagate the stereotype yourself. The military is an opportunity for some people to get their lives in order. I have friends who don't know which direction to take their lives into and it gives them the chance to improve themselves as individuals and do something worthwhile.

It's also unfair to say something like joining the military is effectively "signing their lives away". You might be surprised how the military can change people's lives for the better. Now I'm not advocating joining the military, but having friends and family in it, I can see what positive results can come from it. DesertEagle is another guy who can attest to how much the military has helped him in his life.

It's not so much that the advertising targets those with the penchant for blowing things up and killing people, it's that gamers are in the age range that the military is looking for.

I second all of this. We had a huge nice room at each of the hospitals we had our 2 babies in. Private bathroom and fold out couch/bed for the dad. My wife's water never broke either (well the doctor broke it both times). Then long induced labor. Epidurals are the best. We highly recommend them.

EDIT:

Shema?

So now you're telling us your wife's name? Crrrrzy!!! Now I'm just wondering about Wombat. (Stewart, Spencer?)
It's been given out about 5 previous times. The Wombat name is the one that remains a secret. I'm going with Chester.

You make valid points, and perhaps I did generalize somewhat. As I said, my father was Navy, and it helped him become a commercial airline pilot, so it's not like there aren't benefits. And I also agree that military service helps a lot of people with few other options to turn their lives around. But it also results in a lot of people sacrificing body, mind, and spirt for a senseless war. You think the military's first priority is helping you pay for college or training you for a career? Of course not. They need warm bodies in the Persian Gulf, and they have quotas to meet.

And I'm sorry, but I am HIGHLY skeptical that they are targeting gamers simply because they are in the right "age range." There's more going on than that.
the best is when he said.. here is a few words from the Arbiter about the Navy...lol
yea, at least that's game-related...sorta, lol

1. No problem with the ads

2. I tried to put the word "fart" in my xbox live motto and i received the message that it contained explicit language. I had to take it out. Apparently Fart is another four letter word.

They're looking for warm bodies who will do what they're told to (ie: join the Navy because an ad on the CAGCast told them to). Unfortunately for them, I think the CAGCast is the wrong demographic.

I'm already tired all the fucking pussies complaining about the advertisements already. If you saw three advertisement for every two hours you spent surfing the internet you'd probably shit yourself in disbelief. It's not that bad!

The CAGCast is a great show, they deserve to make something off of it. If 'selling out' now means not getting paid for working then maybe you should all reconsider your jobs.

Holy crap Cheapy and Wombat, two hours long I thought I accidentally downloaded a 1Up episode.

Wow, Katie Couric…… it is obvious why rating have went in the tank for the CBS evening news. Maybe she should go back to school for Journalism 101. First rule of journalism should be, keep your unsubstantiated opinions to yourself only deal with facts. “Playing video games is hazardous to their health.” A good journalist would present both sides of the issue show the possible benefits as well as possible negatives. “But retailers have been known to sell it to underage kids “, yeah the same happens with alcohol and cigarettes not to mention rentals of rated R movies which depict the same if not worse acts in them, too but their sure is no out cry to ban them. “Violent video games can cause kids to act more aggressively”, hmmm she forgot to include that listening music and watching TV or Movies that depicts violence also causes children (and adults) to act more aggressively. In fact if you look at that same study, it shows that playing video games has about the same affect as watching a violent movie. But as Cheapy and Wombat pointed out nobody is asking for a ban on those items. For that great news segment we should dub her the Jaclyn Thompson of CBS. “Quote, Unquote entertainment”….maybe we should say Katie Couric, Quote News Journalist Unquote. Hey Katie I got an entry for your note book it reads “Note to self, remember to just shut up and sit there and look pretty. Let all the heavy thinking and real news to real journalists who are more then just a pretty face.”

Wombat, way to ask the hard questions! This whole XBox 360 failure rate is kind of this topic that no one at Microsoft really wants to talk about. If you ever listen to the GamerScoreBlog’s Podcast god knows they never field any hard questions on there. Wombat maybe you should take over some more of the interview questions. Just a point in fact, I have an Xbox 360 that I purchased in December of 2005 and it is still running. I bought the two year replacement warranty from Best Buy, and now I kind of would like to take advantage of price drops. I am thinking that one way or another that Xbox will have a Red Ring of Death so I can take it to Best Buy and upgrade to an Elite for $50. Although I kind of feel bad killing off the one Xbox 360 that actually seems to work.

I wanted to put a vote in that I am good with the ads. CheapyD has set a standard for the lenght and amount of ads in an episode and it's not bad.

Also, there is a substantial difference between buying a game disk and buying a car. A used car is less capable and reliable whereas a used game has all the same usefulness as when it was first bought. I will miss used games but I think the next generation of systems will see games at the store as "content disk" games with a one use code to unlock the content.

M$ (and others) sell over XBLA-type systems; and sure you own them, but I challenge you to sell them again. Maybe we should start a class action lawsuit about the inability to sell live arcade games when we are done with them.

The lawsuit would never never even make it to court, because every Microsoft product you buy has a huge waiver that you agree to before you can use it. I'm a PC gamer and not a console gamer, so I'm not familiar with what type of EULA you sign off on when you partake of XBLA games, however I'm sure it's there. Once I opened a letter from Microsoft and a slip of paper fell out telling me that by opening the envelope I had agreed to the following (of course that would've never held up in court), that's how bad they are with those things.

As for the one use codes with content disks, I'm not sure if that will happen with the next generation or the current one. Broadband prices are going to continue to drop over the next few years, and companies want to make the transition to complete digital delivery. I think it's conceivable that you may see the transition stage of the content disk beginning during the end of this generation in an attempt to be fully digital by the next one.

The reason I think disks will hang on is because retailors (like walmart) will encorage sales to stay that way. Plus, while broadband prices drop the amount of content storage and transfer you need for each subsequent generation increases. I think you're right that they will try it this gen to look for consumer reaction.

While I may have agreed to the terms of xbla, the lawsuit would have to address that you can't sign away your consumer rights so easily. A friend of mine is a business lawyer and knows much more about this sort of thing. I'll ask him some time but I'm sure he'll say you are right.

Cheapy the show was great and congrats to Wombat on the new job at ugo. Cheapy the Major interview was very intresting to me I rather hear about the inside of the offices then pr questions you can get from any other website.

I must say, some people are really little screaming bitches just because there are some ads...

Good show gentlemen.

all right show kinda stale prbly the lenght that made it stale congrats wombat and cheapyd i think trixie should NEVER appear in public

Hey, I just registered here at CAG, representing Sweeeeeeeeden! :applause:
I've been a CAGcast listener for a long time though, probably a year or so. At the beginning, I kind of disliked the podcast. I remember even skipping a few eps, but I started listening again and it grew on me, partly because of the friendly and relaxed atmosphere, and the change of pace from the many podcasts about gaming I normally listen to.

So yeah, I have to admit I really enjoy listening to the CAGcast nowadays. You appear as pretty normal guys, which works like a double-edged sword in my eyes. Sometimes it kind of pisses me off how uninformed you are about certain news, other times I'm fascinated by your theories and ideas because they shed new light on subjects in ways I haven't even considered.

Oh, and I actually have a podcast of my own together with a friend since april this year, but it's only in Swedish unfortunately. Or, perhaps, fortunately! Still the most prominent gaming podcast in Sweden, I would say. But there are about 4-5 in total, so yeah...
Anyway, enough pointless self-pimping. Let me just say, I find the CAGcast to be a good inspiration for my show in some ways. :)

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I just wanted to show my appreciation for the CAGcast. I reckon the actual Cheap-ass site is pretty useless to me, since I live in Sweden and all. But I still enjoy the podcast, so keep it up! And of course, congrats to CheapyD for becoming a father. :)

Great show as usual.

I swear the internet is full of bitching and moaning idiots. If you morons don't like the ads or what Cheapy and Wombat do with THEIR show then don't listen to it. It's not like you guys are paying for it. The show is free. No matter what message board you go to there will always be some dolts who have to piss and moan about every little thing. GET OVER IT AND YOURSELVES.

So many words to read in this thread, I'll do it later (probably)

Anyway, this has been the best show for a while. Really enjoyed it, thanks for your efforts CheapyD and Wombat.

Great length, great balance of some personal ramblings and game talk and Wombat seems to say more than usual. Win!

Ad's aren't really going to bother me that much, I would guess in general most listeners would prefer not to waste time listening to them and having them break up the flow of the show but I listen to quite a few podcasts and am used to skipping parts I have no interest in (like certain podcasts that put in musical breaks which is fucking lame) so I'll most likely do that.

Please tell us exactly how long the ad's will last so I can skip them easily.

Anyway thanks again for making 2 hours of playing Hellgate London enjoyable, when the podcast ended I managed to force myself to play another 10 minutes or so, then quit and uninstalled.

edit: ok just read the thread, so ads were in this episode? None for me, Orko60 or Crazytalkx by the looks of it. Maybe US targetted ad's like join the navy should be kept to a US edition of the show and an 'International' version can be without ads :) Because ad's are one thng, totally irrelevant ad's are a complete waste of space and pointless.
no ads in mine either. whats the deal cheapy?
The ads aren't inserted if you live outside the USA.

"The ads aren't inserted if you live outside the USA."

Genius.

I love ad's, the more the merrier :)

I would like the Wii version. I think you should keep the ps2 version. My reasoning is I need a new Wii game to play and the ps2 version is likely the 2nd best version of it.

EDIT: as per the podcast I am indeed old enough to purchase Manhunt
The ads aren't inserted if you live outside the USA.
makes sense. but Keith David's voice is friggin badass which makes the ads bearable.

Listened to the show the other day, great show as always, Cheapy and Wombat! And thanks for adding the sound clips from the last DC CAG meet-up, that was a pretty nice surprise!
The ads aren't inserted if you live outside the USA.
I wondered why I didn't hear them.

How does that work? Did you make a U.S. and non U.S. version of the show?

Does that mean you won't hear them either, since you live in Japan?

(Hilarious!)

First, you guys say Michael Pachter has no credibility, then Wombat calls Major Nelson a vagina clown, and now CheapyD wants to stab Katie Couric with a shard of glass.

Can we expect Katie Couric to be a special guest 4 to 5 episodes from now?

BTW, Cheapy...where the hell were the baby unboxing videos? Or should we be expecting some new unboxing videos of presents left behind by Tai?
