So there's one downside to making Week 1 a restricted week. It allows teams another shot at resigning players that they didn't want to or had negotiations end with during the regular season. May not matter in the end though.
That's true. But in some cases, it may actually be somewhat fair, considering how many owners we've replaced this past season, and how many players the new owners never got a chance to negotiate with. Honestly, I'm not even sure doing this is a real "solution" depending on if the player behaves differently in open free agency than he would beforehand.
Like if Britt is in fact a free agent, and I make him an offer, and he doesn't accept it...and waits for the following week to get offers from other teams, then I'm still screwed. I guess the assumption you have to make is that he would have done that anyway with the offer had I been able to make one during Stage 1.
My only concern is if I make him an offer, will he actually accept/decline it right away...the same as he would have during Stage 1? Ultimately, I feel like it's the best we've got...and at least giving everyone first dibs on any players they didn't get a chance to negotiate with is the most fair thing we can do.
