Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Gen. Discussion & Info

Finished this game yesterday in my second sit-down.

I played through on normal, and it took me about five hours and twenty minutes. I must say I'm very happy I played through on normal first, as it was extremely intense the whole way through without ever feeling like grinding or lifting me from the immersion by having to repeat sections over and over again (the way you end up playing all CoD's on veteran).

There's one word I keep coming up with to describe this game: ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

No game should be able to do what this game did.

In the short five hours I played, CoD broke barrier after barrier with things you'd never have expected,
from setting you behind the eyes of a president led to the slaughter, to setting you behind the controls of a C-130 (a weapon that has long been said to "feel like a videogame", is now being emulated by a videogame), to giving you a fucking FLASHBACK sequence where they turn Call of Duty into a fucking STEALTH GAME that is more intense and amazing than most games in the stealth-genre, to having you snipe an enemy from 800 meters, accounting for wind and the fucking coriolis effect, to killing your character with a nuclear bomb, and putting you in the dying first-person view, from the opening intro, running out of a sinking ship as water bursts in and the entire playing field starts turning sideways, to the outro where your dying squad leader, who has been with you since the beginning of the game, in his last dying action tosses you a pistol to finally take out the final mark in the game
.

This is ridiculous. This is absolutely ridiculous. Infinity Ward packed more amazing moments into five hours of gameplay than most developers are able to pack into a trilogy of games. The entire game had me constantly thinking "that was the most intense thing I've ever done in a videogame", only for the next sequence to 1-up it in "holyfuckingawesomeness".

Bravo, Infinity Ward, bravo.

Well I just got into it for about an hour last night. The training mission was sort of cool, however it was impossible for me to get anthing other than "Recommended Difficulty: Normal" I think my best time was like 24 seconds or somethign with a 3 or 4 for accuracy bonus.

I ignored it anyway and chose to use the one between normal and the hardest, (veteran) I think. I figure it is a really short game anyway and since I only have it for 3-4 weeks I wouldnt want to play through the Singleplayer story more than twice (on veteran this time adn Hardcore the next).

Do you know when I beat it the first time on veteran, will I get all the achievements for both Normal and Veteran, or just veteran?

Yeah that sounds right, I started on Hardened not Veteran. Is there a noticable jump in diffiuclty between Hardened and Vet? I imagine there is as there have been in past games and I seem to be moving through the game pretty quickly (at least the first hour of it last night). Your squad is really good, I mean like so good that by the time I spot the enemy my guys are usually already putting fire on them. Dunno if this is "too good" or if sucha thing is even possible. I guess it is possible if you never get an opportunity to get a shot in but I am sure some rough patches lay in store when I will be complaining that my squad sucks too bad so I should bite my tongue.

Not sure if this was answered in this massive thread...

but is getting onto multiplayer this late a hinder ?

What I mean is since most people are ranked up all the way... is it difficult for somebody who just picked it up to get in the game ?

or does it end up a noob killing fest ?

Ya I just started the other day, and its not bad at all, your not going to ever be in the top of the kills, but you'll be ok. Just keep moving and keep firing

Yeah I'm actually looking forward to just getting totally owned a few times. It gives me resolve to at least get to the middle of the pack within my first session of playing online.

The ikohn and me just picked it up.... and i'm trying to get oneup5down to get it as well... so we should try to game it up.

It just depends on who you play against and in what mode. I can't do jack in Headquarters, but then I go into FFA or Team Deathmatch and I am always in the top 3 in points.

I'm in. Don't wait on me though, I have to meet with a wedding DJ at 5:30. But I am definitely down w/ a lil Specia1ist, Oneup, Heath the Beef, and Ikohn4ever slugfest later.

Well said my friend. :applause:

I am absolutely in love with the single player mode (as well as MP), I replay the
flashback
mission(s) nearly 4 times a week.

I just wish IW added a couple of more "typical" US Marine missions situated in the desert ala Charlie Don't Surf. It was a very fun mission, but it was practically the only one of its kind.

Maybe someone can help me. I've been having connection interrupted problems lately. Like every 5 seconds, I flash backward into a wall or something. I am using a wireless connection, and this is the only game I am having a problem with.

Not at all. People who have multiple levles of prestige already arent necessarily good, they just play alot.

Leveling up the weapons doesnt make them anymore powerful. The most important thing to get for any weapon imo is the red dot sight. And you get that after 25 kills, starting at level 5. So you can do that in an hour or so.

Perks can help make life easier, but they dont break the game, and you can still kill people without having any of the good ones.

Im over halfway thru my second prestige, and I mainly used perks and weapons unlocked at early levels. By time Im in the mid 20's, I have everything I need to get to level 55.

The MOST importing thing that comes to you with time spent playing is learning the layouts of the maps. Where the bottlenecks are, and where enemies are most likely to come from. Thats where your gonna die alot in the beginning. You'll be looking ahead, and enemies are gonna come from the sides or behind. Thats the benefit of playing alot, learning the intricacies of the maps. Imo, that knowledge is more important than any weapon or perk.

I think the balance was brilliant. Maybe a bit too much Russia. Every level was something new and exciting and it didn't ever get repetitive (except for, as I said, maybe the Russian countryside).

In the beginning play Team Deathmatch. It will be easier on you to have some people on your side and be able to collect XP bonuses for winning. Once you have a gun you like with a red dot sight then you'll be good to go for leveling up.

Watch out for the last stand and matrydom perks my friend!
I didn't see this, but is anybody going to start a CAG "clan" for this or other multiplayer titles because of the fall update?
The update didn't add clan support.
The update didn't add clan support.
He means using a silver account as a clan list. hence "clan"

I posted this message in the COD 4 thread, but havent gotten a response.

When I have been playing online the last 3-4 days, I've been getting the connection interrupted error every 5-10 seconds. Its rendered the game unplayable online. I called Microsoft last night, and they were unable to help me. I was hoping that someone who had that problem and solved it would be able to help.

I am using the official Wireless Adapter and a Netgear Router. I havent had a problem with any other game or system, just this one.

I came across the same problem last night and I think this is going to be one of the issues that they address with the update. I also have a netgear router but I don't think that is the problem. It is probably just a bad connection with the host. I hope that they fix it to use the type of host searching that halo 3 uses, where it will automatically look for the best host thru out each match.

I don't understand the multiplayer at all. A friend who I've played Halo with for years turned me on to the game, and while I love single player, I tried some online matches and had no idea how people were getting/losing points and what was required to win the game.

The best thing you can do is start off with Team Deathmatch or free for all. The scoring in that is pretty basic.

You'll get 10 XP for every kill, 5 for every assist (team match only, if you wound someone and a teammate finishes the kill, you'll get an assist). At the end you'll get a match bonus, and I don't know how they base that amount, but I do believe it is an incentive to stay until the end.

Your XP builds your levels, and as you get further in the levels you'll unlock new guns and perks.

Did that help?
This has happened to me every so often, it depends on what is happening with their servers/ the host i guess.
Yeah, it gets annoying, but at least it doesn't happen too often.

Playing through on veteran now. It's not that bad at all. I remember CoD2 veteran being harder, but then again that's because I spent weeks being discouraged on a section where you have to plant explosives on a tank until I remembered you have SMOKE GRENADES (which it is entirely impossible to do without them).

Anyways, it's actually been much much easier going on Veteran. I've died half the times I did on normal. Certain sections, like the aftermath of the sniping level, seemed like a breeze on veteran compared to how hard it felt on normal. Of course, you always encounter the sections where there's an ill-placed enemy... but that's more bad level design than difficulty.

Obviously I'm not saying it's easier on normal, but let's just say it helps when you've played long enough to know what the fuck you're doing.

I'd highly recommend doing what I did, playing on normal first and then on veteran. You'll get an intense challenge on normal, and you won't ruin the immersion and cinematic quality of the game by repeating sections, and you can just get all your veteran and the hard and long achievements together on the second run-through.

Now, this is assuming you actually have the game for a while, and as I'm scheduled to sell this game to someone tomorrow (for a bit over my purchase price), I won't have the luxury of quite finishing it on veteran.

Where can I find the cag clan gamertags or what are they? I have been playing COD4 quite a bit lately and wanted to know what the gamertag for the CAG Clan so I play with some fellow Cags.

You should try Mile High Club on vet, Pyro. I'd be curious to see what you think of it if you think most of veteran is not that bad.

Playing half of the game on veteran and saying it isnt that hard is kind of weak. Its on par with CoD2 veteran in my opinion. But nothing in CoD can match MLC

Well, my 360 killed my game last night, scratched up the entire center of the disc rendering it playless.

Gotta get a new disc somehow, how should I go about it? First time my 360 has killed a disc

This game is so damn good...i have clocked in 14 hours on multiplayer since sunday night. It is very hard to play Halo 3 now, and i played Halo 3 a helluva lot since launch.

Oh how I HATE Mile High Club on vet. I yetto beat that bloody mission. I tried for around 4 hours straight and then gave up. I'll come back to it when hell freezes over to get that last nerd point.

For those looking for a "clan" for COD4, I've set one up on the gamertag CAGCOD4. Add that name to your friends list and you will be able to see the entire list of people listed under CAGCOD4.

You can easily invite people into a game that way.

Of course, it does help to have [CAG] in front of your name. I do.

Yeah, I heard that shit is ridiculous. I just sold my copy of this game (made a tidy profit of $8), and now I'm in Call of Duty 4 withdrawl. Oh well, I couldn't really afford to keep it.
Playing half of the game on veteran and saying it isnt that hard is kind of weak.
To be fair, if the achievements are any indication I've played through 72.7272...% of the game ;)

MLC :?:

edit: oh, do you mean MHC?

Yes my bad I was distracted while typing that up, not even a typo since its so far away I just wasnt thinking lol

And yes you have played more then half, but the later missions get harder. I dont think its as hard as people say it is either, I thought the same about CoD2 vet not being as difficult as people say. But MHC was a challenge

Yeah, from what I can tell on normal, the hardest part of this game is the daytime-safehouse level, which I just got to last night but haven't tried yet on Veteran.

I might just have to spend the $8 I profited off selling this game on a week's rental, just so I can 1000/1000 this game.

Which would make it my first 1000/1000.

Though I'd need a guide for all the intels... hopefully they have a guide for that somewhere. And the TV locations for "your show sucks".

Was that the hardest achievement for you? How long did it take?
Was that the hardest achievement for you? How long did it take?
It is the hardest. A lot of people don't have it yet. It took me about 3 hours of trying to get a good clean strategy down for it. It's pretty simple on everything but Veteran. You have to play it on Veteran though and you only have 1 minute. Try it out and post your thoughts :D
