Chrono Trigger DS Thread - E3 Impressions Post #272

Looking forward to this. Played CT last year and got to a maze and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get back out and finally just said fuck it.
Not so sure I'd say that. The CT soundtrack is exceptional, but he hasn't done anything close to as good since.
I liked a lot of his other works besides CT... Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Shadow Hearts 1 & 2. Looking at Wikipedia though, he's done some others that make me go "WTF!?" like Mario Party.:whistle2:|

I thought he did Xenogears, as well... I remember that OST being remarkably good.

I didn't like the Xenogears soundtrack. Never understood why so many people did. Chrono Cross did have a good soundtrack, I'll give you that one. Wasn't as good as CT though. As for Shadow Hearts 1 and 2, he was one composer among a few that worked on those games. In fact in neither of those did he do the most composing.
I thought I was the only one... I don't know why but I get goosebumps too, every time the intro music or the Battle With Magus theme plays.
I dont even need to hear the music, just the ticking clock is enough to give me goose bumps.

What other soundtracks have you heard of his? I know he did work for a DS dungeon crawler, but the game got terrible reviews. I know he's doing music for Soma Bringer and I really liked the music on the site for the game.

Chrono Cross has my personal favorite soundtrack hands down. I think Chrono Trigger and Xenogears have exceptional soundtracks as well.

On a side note I really love Final Fight's soundtrack.

Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross is by far my favorite game story ever...

Both soundtracks are amazing.

Can't wait to play this again, haven't played it since putting my SNES copy back in it's box 10+ years ago! In fact it's still sitting there staring at me....now if I could only find my SNES.....

I've never really played CT before so I'm hyped. I had bought the PS version years ago but never really got into it. It was very slow to the point where I stopped playing within 20 minutes of starting.
Update: Also Actraiser and maybe FFIV Piano are up there.
FFIV Piano was brilliant.

I think my favs are

1. FFVI/CT tied for first
2. FFVII
3. Breath of Fire 2
4. FFIV
5. Castlevania SotN
Chrono Trigger and Xenogears are my two favorite soundtracks, I think. Let me check.
1. Ace Combat 5
2. Onimusha Dawn of Dreams
3. Ace Combat Zero
4. Chrono Trigger
5. Guilty Gear X2

I felt that by Chrono Cross, Mitsuda was finally in his comfort zone and established his own style. Chrono Trigger was where he was more experimental, but at the same time trying to mimic (and generally surpassed) the epic style of RPG music.

Also this:

Doesn't surprised me he cried during the ending. The ending theme was that good.

I'd like to play this.
But still, only one extra dungeon? And what would the wi-fi be?

Whatever, this game never gets old.

New scans:

Apparently, they're fucking around with the battle system. They've updated Active Time Battle to "ATB ver 2."

I am extremely, extremely, extremely apprehensive about this.

At least this scans completely lay to rest any belief that they're altering the graphics at all.
It looks like the update to the battle system is to add touchscreen stuff to it.
Yeah, pretty much. All of the screenshots on that page are from the top screen, so I'm guessing that all they did was move the HP/MP info and menu options to the bottom screen.

It has to be just touch screen support. It would be devastating if they got everything right but bungled the near flawless battle system.

Yea, looks like ATB ver. 2 just removes menus that were there originally and shows your MP/HP via bars next to the character... I hope they implement it well!

So yes. After my hands on at E3... Chrono Trigger DS is the same game we all know and love and then some…

It had the PS1 introduction sequence and upon starting the game you will notice the bottom touch screen is a map screen.

After speaking with some representatives that were present I was able to find out that the final game will have all of the features from the PlayStation port of Chrono Trigger without the load times. This is good news and is proving to be the definitive version of the game.

The music and sound cues were spot on and the graphics looked as good as ever on the tiny DS screen. Another added note is now you can control the party’s movement by use of the touch screen. Also mentioned was the alternate active time battle setting the game will feature. More info on that in the near future.

Can’t wait until later this year!

Maaaan, whateva. It ain't definitive if I can't play it on the big screen. :O

It's nice to hear some good news on this port from another CAG. Square seems to like to half ass their ports and then release for $40 because they know their fanboys will buy it regardless.

Can you only control party movement or can you also select commands (attack, magic, item) with the stylus as well? I was hoping the DS version would include all the PS1 extras but that was to be expected.

Nintendo shuold have just showed Miyamoto playing this for an hour during their conference. That alone would have been better than Sony and Microsoft.

Miyamoto looking down at DS> AWSUMMOOOOOOOO

It seriously would have made for more entertainment than Wii Music did.

Oh, and anyone wanna place bets that Chrono Cross will reach Final Fantasy VII rarity once Chrono Trigger DS hits? It is easy to find now but since Chrono Trigger is more of a cult following in my opinion (still so many that haven't played this gem), I can see demand skyrocketing for Chrono Cross (once people finish the game) like Twin Snakes and Essentials went up as soon as MGS4 hit.

Ahh, great. It sounds like this game will be pure ecstasy in my hands. Perfect!

I'm especially excited to hear that Mitsuda was brought back on to ensure that his themes stay true to their original versions. Somehow, this makes everything all right with the world...

Nintendo should have done something... anything, other than what they did. They're the laughing stock of the industry. But they're laughing too... all the way to the bank.

This looks like the N64 and GC all over again... little to no (real) games

I'm not disagreeing with the overall message you've got here, but let's be fair - casual games didn't really show up from Nintendo until the DS and the Wii. There was the occasional title in the GC's library (you could argue Animal Crossing), but basically all of their games were franchises, or something that became a franchise (Pikmin, Smash Bros).

But that discussion is a pile of dead horses so I'm not really interested in going through it anymore than I've already done.

Now supposedly the PS1 animated cut scenes are included in this version.

I haven't played through the PS1 version so can someone tell me how the videos are incorporated? Do they play after the in-game scenes or do they replace them altogether?

Also isn't there an extra ending or some hidden scene in the PS1 version?

They play just play after the in-game scenes. So it's like you're seeing the same scene twice.

The new ending links the game to Chrono Cross, and shows more of what happened afterwards.

not sure if anyone already asked this..and i really dont feel like going through 15 pages of posts..but does anyone think they will be coming out with a special edition DS for this...if so im just gonna wait till that one comes out to get one..thanks in advance

Nothing has been announced yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo of Japan released some sort of special edition DS for Chrono Trigger.

I'd actually be surprised if they didn't.

I am in the market for a new DS, so I may just wait and see if one gets released with this. Where do people usually buy stuff like that from? Play-Asia?

play-asia is reliable and good, but expensive. i have a guy in japan i buy them from. i found him selling rare japan-only stuff on ebay.

I know what I'll be doing after eating turkey and stuffin' this year.

Your mom while I play Chrono Trigger on the DS, that's what.

Screw turkey, stuffin' and football. Chrono Trigger comes first.
Chrono Trigger DS is coming to NA on November 25.

Awesome. Simply awesome. Now if they actually made this game under $40, I might buy it day 1.

Oh, who am I kidding, I'd get it day 1 anyways.
