Chrono Trigger DS Thread - E3 Impressions Post #272

I think my parents bought C.T. for me one adolescent Christmas way back in the day for $70. S-E games were REALLY pricey even then - I remember seeing Final Fantasy III back in the local games used store (before the advent of Gamestop - wow, that WAS a long time ago) for $70-$80. Adjust for intense inflation and serve cold. $40 now seems almost like a bargain, but I still wish it was cheaper.

Did you ask them about CT or did they just pick that game out for you? Only SNES games my parents got me were SimCity (was more for them) and Super Mario World. I had to purchase all other games myself. Old times, when I thought licensed games from TV shows and movies were the bomb.

Hey! Animaniacs was a great game :)

I came into RPGs a bit late, and with game magazines being the only reliable source of info back then, I got into CT late. Found a used copy probably 2 years after it came out, which proceeded to freeze about every 10th hour of gameplay. Never died on me but it could be so annoying. Still played the hell out of it, though.

And Beavis and Butthead..shoot.. at the time I thought that was the greatest game ever.

haha me too. But some of them were good like Duck Hunt.

I requested it - I remember seeing the Nintendo Power strategy guide and thinking "This is the most amazing game ever." I don't think I got many other Christmas presents that year, because it was so expensive... but I played that game for months.
So anyones amazon order ship yet? Noticed their release date went from today to thursday all of a sudden.
I had BML and Amazon had an issue with it I guess, I told them to retry it since it should work fine.

I'm almost wondering if they wanted to ship it out today but then realized that they switced it to the 27th....

I don't think Amazon gets their shipping right. They constantly can't ship games the day they come out for some reason.
This might have been answered before, but I can't find it...is CTDS going to be stylus-only control or can I do more.."classic" control? I hate it when games force the stylus control.

/tk
You can do "classic" if you want. Stylus is supported but not necessary from what I've read.

Where the hell did you guys buy this game for under $80 is what I want to know? The MSRP was, I am almost certain $80 and I don't remember ever seeing discounts on new games back then. I bought mine from Toys R Us in Fond du Lac, WI. Went back for the guide too.

$40 is a bargain for what you get.

Mine shipped from Amazon. I pay for Prime though too.

Thanks a ton! I'll be buying this soon, though probably not playing it until I finish DQIV.

Can anyone confirm this for me? I hate stylus movement in games.

I played about an hour into it.

There are two modes DS and Classic. The DS mode enables the game to be played completely with the stylus however all of the button inputs are also available.

In short, you never need to pick up the stylus for either of the game modes.

Enjoy.

EDIT: The game is as expected. The text is slightly changed from the SNES version and no weird load times like the psx version (with all the anime scenes). My only complaint is the sound can be a bit wonky at times - but this is a problem with the DS in general.

The only difference between Classic and DS mode are the screen in battle. Classic is same as SNES with everything in the same screen, DS is where your HP and menu are on the bottom screen. I ended up playing in DS mode as the text in classic mode are too small

I just want to point out that this was the reason Square said they never released CT as a GBA game - the resolution on it was too small for the game, which would have made text impossible to read.

Since everyone kept asking/complaining about it never making it as a GBA release after the FF titles were ported.

Gawd damn I hate this new translation. Just doesn't sound right.

That's pretty dumb reasoning. The lower resolution does not force scaling the text. Yeah, they'd have to narrow the text boxes by 16 pixels, but vertical scaling wouldn't be necessary; it'd just have to take up more of the screen.

The DS's vertical resolution is also a bit lower than the SNES's, so they still had to do the same thing.

It wasn't just for text reasons - it was for the amount of space menus take up in the game as well.

My Amazon copy shipped out today. Hopefully it'll make it to me on Saturday, but with no mail on Thursday it's impossible to guess.
i paid almost $60 the day chrono trigger came out back in 95
Congratulations to you I guess?

Amazon, you're my only hope. I'm listening to the Chrono Cross Retronauts right now, and goddamn is it going to be hard for me to wait a sale or price drop on this game.

Also a lot of people complained about FFIV Advance, but I didn't mind the glitches (which only helped me) due to delicious translation and interesting bonus dungeons.
The only bad thing about FFIV Advance was that it was slow or whatever.
There was a huge amount of cursor lag, and sometimes characters wouldn't attack for many rounds. I'm not even talking about someone casting a spell - I had situations where I wanted someone to attack or use an item, and everyone else in the party would go through 2 full actions before that one person did.

It was buggy beyond belief considering how old a game it was - there was no excuse for it. It was ridiculous.

I'm sure I have much angrier rants upon the game if you could search for posts about it when it was released.

they ended up fixing some (but not all ) of the glitches in the Europe version of FFIV.

The problem is SE hiring TOSE to do the port, and there is slowdown in just about everyone of their port

Just got home for thanksgiving to find a little present from Amazon on my doorstep.

I didn't realize I was getting the bonus soundtrack as well, which was a very nice bonus, even if it is just two songs. Now the question is, should I pop it in now, or wait until I actually have time to play it?

Yeah, I think that was it.

Ive never played this game, but am some what interested it in. The problem is that I can never finish a RPG of a handheld...

Ive got Final Fantasy 1&2, 3, 5, and tactics advance and the only one I beat out of those was 1. Plus the price turns me off...

Should I bother?

Seeing how Chrono Trigger is a short game (easily under 20 hours on first run) but with high replay value, you should get it.

But its either that or GH: decades...
And I REALLY like the set list on that.

Dood.

Chrono Trigger >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Guitar Hero.

And this is coming from someone who absolutely adores No Rain.

It's also >>>>>>>>>>> Final Fantasy for the most part (4 and 6 being the only comparable ones).

Plus, you've never played it. This is a travesty you should rectify.

You can (and do) enjoy playing rhythm games on a handheld but not RPGs?

*head asplodes*

Its just i've played so many RPGs lately, its getting on my nerves a little.
My current backlog consists of over 30 RPGs and since this was highly regarded In thought it might compel me to play it, but after watching some gameplay I'm not so sure.

Are you serious? You are undervaluing Chrono Trigger with your statement there.

Chrono Trigger is one of the best RPGs in the past 20 years. You are missing out if you don't pick this up. Aside from the list of available songs, if you've played one Guitar Hero, you've played them all, but Chrono Trigger stands out among RPGs.

Chrono trigger is one of the best RPGs ever.. also one of the best soundtracks ever.. Magus's theme.. pwnage.

Chrono cross on the other hand... blah.

Took the $40 hit and picked it up at GS today. The text is a smidgen too small but readable. I don't care about the changes to the dialogue but I do mind the changes to item names and to a lesser degree, the Tech names.

Tonics are now Potions, Revive is now Athenian Water (the fuck?), and Remedy is now Panacea. Dunno what Ether is since I am too early in the game. Obviously not a huge deal but what was wrong with the original names that we are all used to?

I do love the animated clips since I never played the PSX version and the rewritten dialogue is pretty good (but they did change the "Good morning, Crono!") line in the beginning.

I can see why people would gripe about the localization. I have issues with Ted Woolsey's work on FFVI, but his work on CT was mostly excellent.

The items names are actually translated from the Japanese version as well (yes it is Atheian Water in Japanese version. At least it is still Masamune instead of Grandleon. To be fair Woolsey had to translate the game by himself in a month.
At least it is still Masamune instead of Grandleon.
Boooooooo. I still don't understand why they changed it from something English-sounding to something Japanese-sounding for the English release.

Yeah they removed it altogether. She still calls out to him twice but the "Good morning" line was replaced with "Are you still sleeping?"

Anyone care to comment on the new dungeons that were added? Ive only played for roughly four hours and im almost at the t-rex boss (first time)
