"Low down"? What do you want to know, exactly?
Sorry, my post wasn't exactly specific. Have any movies ever advertised characters as real people networking back and forth on a myspace or facebook page?
What exactly is with the name? What does it mean? Is it the name of the monster?
PS: I just saw it tonight, and on the way out I stepped in some puke. I was pissed they didn't film it with a camera with image stabalization at least.
I get the whole "documentary"/blair witch style but please, everybody was dizzy and some puked, my friends actually left b/c I guess they thought it was slightly disturbing, dizziness etc.
I liked it, borderline loved it, I'm a sucker for monsters and cool CGI.
What exactly is with the name? What does it mean? Is it the name of the monster?
In the world of the movie, it's the military's codename for both the incident of the monster attack on NYC, and apparently, the monster itself.
It's completely proprietary, and means absolutely nothing. Just a codename.
I saw this over a week ago, but has there been any talk about what the fireballs were in the first attack? I think they talked about a tanker getting destroyed and that was the initial explosion, but I wasn't exactly sure what the giant fireballs were supposed to be.
when the girl blew up, that was freaky. also when they are in the subway tunnel and HUD starts talking about homeless guys on fire, and then he turns and camera lights on and it get scary! Also, I loved the ending, it made you think and speculate.
wasn't cliched - basically everyone dies. I suppose it's almost possible Rob and Beth survived, but I'm convinced they did - mainly because of the intro where the film says, 'Recovered from US Site-447, formerly known as Central Park," it doesn't sound like there's anything left of it. The only survivor was Lily, presumably, and she's still all Mr Pink about it, we don't know if she made it out.
Did anyone else think it had a bit of a Half-Life 2 feel to it? The protagonist, 1st-person view that tells the story mostly through conversation? I got this feeling the most when
they've made it to the medical compound, and you pass by all the hectic things going on, and then they finally get led out to a door to go and try to save Beth. The way the soldier who lets them out talks to them and the condition of the city, it totally felt like City 17.
I also love that
we never know more than the characters know. I don't care where the monster came from or why it's attacking the city, it doesn't need to be explained to me. If the characters survived, then I'm sure we would have found out, but they didn't, so we didn't. That's perfectly fine.
Honestly I hate the way Hollywood holds our hand and explains every little thing, usually from start to finish. For example, I'm sick of every comic book movie starting with the 1st 45 minutes being an origin story. It's become so cliched that I don't even have a huge desire to see any new IPs coming out because I feel like I can predict what's going to happen before the movie even starts. A mainstream movie that leaves something to your imagination (like Cloverfield) is a breathe of bresh air (and I say this knowing full well that it's not the only one, but to me it's the most recent and blatant example of a film which does so, especially in such large quantaties).
Thoughts?
(I realize some of this may have already been discussed, but it's a long-ass thread!)
HUD= Heads Up Display, and he certainly was, don't you think?
Yeah, I love that that was his name, and that I'm geeky enough to get it.
Either way, I really liked it and can sustain disbelief on such nuances as camera life.
Thank you! I've glanced through some of the thread now, and it's just a bunch of bitching about how likely or unlikely these small, unimportant things are. Who gives a shit if the camera was made of some unbreakable alloy? If it got broken there wouldn't be a movie, so deal with it.
Really, the only unrealistic thing that bothered me about the camera is that
after Hud gets chomped on, Rob goes back for the camera before running away from the monster. Anyone else would have gotten the out.
Saw this last night and absolutely loved it!

Now that the fever has more or less died down I am looking forward to the DVD release.
PS. Did anyone see that hasbro is making a cloverfield monster toy? It's gonna cost a hundred bucks and it doesn't come out until september. I didn't buy one but it will be nice to see what it finally looks like. Unless they put big blurs all over the figure.

eh now that i read somewhere that the thing was a baby looking for its mother and its actions were based on fear i guess thats cool and all but i dont see how they could milk this anymore especially if they try and do the whole its fromt he view of survivors thing again.

That bothered me as well
I mean, the creature takes a bite out of Hud, then up and leaves of his own free will, walking past Rob & the girl.
I just watched the movie tonight. Something about the 1st person aspect really sucks you into the story. Like most everyone else, I thought the fact that you didnt know any more than the characters did, gave it that extra bit of suspense. I'd be kind of dissapointed if they asked one of the army guys and they casually responded "Creature effected by secret nuclear testing" or something like that (someone get Dr. Tatopaulos!!!).
I'm reading now that Paramount is already planning a sequel. My only guess is it'll take after Blair Witch 2 and just be same circumstances, different place.
I didn't think the show was very realistic. If there was a huge ass monster tearing up the city then people would do a lot more cussing and running. Like instead of walking through the subway at a leasurely pace I would be hauling ass down the subway yelling holy ing shit, what the was that shit!
I don't really think it's really that unrealistic.
After all, Rob's best friend just died, and the tape is all he has left of Hud. I think that a lot of people would try and get the camera, especially since recording the events as they happened was so important to Hud.
Plus, if you have a gigantic monster standing right above you it's not like you're going to be able to think logically about anything. We can talk all day about how stupid Rob was being when he went for the camera, but the truth is you have no idea how you would react in a similar situation.
I thought it was pretty good... but I'll toss in a few comments about the things that bothered me regarding the movie.
Spoilers ahead......
The night vision camera scene. That was so obvious when they were fiddling with the camera looking for the night vision feature. You know they were just gonna turn it on and then be like oh my god the things are already right here.
After the copter crash. They drag Rob and whatever out and are standing there for a minute and then they suddenly just notice the big monster standing there. Was it already there just watching them for fun or did it tip toe up.
Then Hud stares @ the monster's crotch and it bites him in half for being a perv. Rob and Beth run to check on Hud even though he is now about 3 or so feet shorter.
The only other thing overall that bothered me somewhat was the big claim to fame home camera thing. The first 15 minutes they can't keep the camera straight or get people in the shot correctly. Later on they are running full sprint and Hud is still managing to get some near perfect filming going. If I'm sprinting down the street with a freaking behemoth right next me I'm not going to be looking through the camera lense. I'm gonna drop that shit and try to get the hell out of there and maybe throw some other people down behind me to slow it down a bit.
Also after Hud is half eaten Rob still has the presence of mine to grab that all important camera.
One thing I did like was Lily flying away. I was waiting for the mosnter to suddenly appear and swat the copter down. I was presently surprised that it wasn't that predictable, esepcially after the night vision scene earlier.

Umm hate to break it to you but Lily died man.
The scene right after that it shows her heli smashing into something. Cant remember what.
Did anyone else notice at the very end when they show the ocean in Coney, there is a circle of water surging in the ocean as if something was sinking into the water?
A couple people at work say they saw something fall from the sky, but all i saw was the surging water.

But she is dead my friend.
There were three helicopters: Lily's, then Rob's, and then a third one that arrived after Rob, Hud, and Beth took off. I'm almost 100% sure that it was the third one which was sent flying into a building.
There were two helicopters flying when Hud caught the monster being bombed from overhead. Their helicopter got downed- but we don't know what happened to the other one. I strongly believed that other one was Lily's, and that she got away.
Well here it is folks, that toy that was mentioned awhile back with 70 points of articulation and incredible life-like detail, authentic sound, is 14" tall, includes 10 parasites, two interchangeable heads and a Statue of Liberty head accessory.
Wow the monster design is really disappointing. I guess there's a reason we barely saw the monster in the movie.
But godzilla and gamera are totally da bomb amirite?
That looks exact what the movie was. Complete and utter shit.
OOOH SHIT, MAN, NAPALM BURN ON CLOVERFIELD.

Internet sarcasm? Amazing!
Also I would agree that Godzilla and gamera are better designed. Since when they were made that didnt have uber cool SX design and CGI so for the time they were pretty damn good.
Hmmm I guess I should have put that last sentence in bold...you know...to add texture.

For some reason I really dont remember the monster looking anything like that. This is the first time I thought a toy looked vastly different from what I remembered.
Hmmm.
But as I thought..this movie has almost completely fell off the radar. Other than hardcore fans that will discuss it well into the future the everyday person seems to have forgotten all about it.

You would think is because 1, all that dust and dirt was covering it after all those building collapsed and all that bombardment by the military. Sure it's skin was super strong, but it doesn't mean it will be squeaky clean. Hopefully the designers will give us some more realistic textures before the release of the toy. Right now it's too ugly

Well the white really stands out. But what about the body? Was that how it looked?
Because I dont remember it looking at all like that. Even with the only 30 seconds of screen time its still surprising that it looks like that.
I don't remember. Everytime I feel like going to see it again for more of a visual inspection, my stomach feels like turning
That is the monster. The only monster. I can see why it's white since it's been under the ocean for a couple thousand years (so sayeth the Abrahms) and hasn't had a chance to get much sun.

The problem is that it's clearly dark gray in the movie.

It definitely did not show her helicopter smashing into anything. It may have been another helicopter, but i'm fairly sure that her copter did not get smashed. There was a copter that got smashed, but it was not hers.

Its quoted as saying that its basically just unsure.
So she neither survives or dies. Its what you want. I am going to assume she died.
this is going to be an endless debate for months..........years even
No.
The movie wasnt good enough for casual fans to every care enough to debate it.
So although the internet folks will talk its already completely dropped off the causal fans radar.
Now that we have officially seen what the monster looks like, anyone thinks could have been easily killed with everything that was thrown at it ??!?!?!
I mean come on, everything has a weakness.
if it came out of the ocean then why did it knock off the head.
It had no logical reason. The SoL didn't present a threat to it, yet it took the time to blow up a tanker (still don't know how it did it), and make a run for the SoL and swipe it's head. Laws of physics would say that it would be impossible for the head to be tossed that far and bounce in Rob's street in it's recognizable form. We will truly never know what was the creature looking for in NYC.
They should've kept shooting different parts of the monster and looking for the red flash. If they had just done that they wouldn't have been forced to use their screen-clearing bomb attacks.
