[customspoiler=Basic FAQ]
-Basic Info/Overview
For those that don't know Club Nintendo is Nintendo's loyalty program of sorts. When you buy a Nintendo Console/Handheld, or a Nintendo published game, you get a pin that you can enter online to earn points. These points can then be redeemed for games, accesories, and collectable items. If you earn enough points in a Club year (300 for gold and 600 for platinum, which each have their own reward), you also receive a free bonus only available to a select few. You can read the full list of eligible titles, as well as their point value, here.

-How do I get coins for digital purchases?
In order to earn coins on any digital games you purchase on Wii/WiiU/3DS/DSi, you will first need to link you Club Nintendo account to your system. Instruction for doing so can be found here.

-Can I play the Wii games on my Wii-U?
Yes, but as of now, only in Wii mode. Native Wii U support might be added later on, but will most likely require the typical $1-$1.50 fee to transfer over.

-How do I play Wii games on Wii U
You will need to enter Wii mode on your Wii U. Instructions on doing so can be found http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/features_wii_menu.jsp?menu=wii_shop&submenu=wup-wiishop-ht-redeem-code"]here[/url].

- If I don't spend coins for the entire year long period, do they carry over?
Yes, you can keep your coins past the Club Nintendo year they are redeemed in. However they only count toward gold or platinum status for the Nintendo year (june 31st-july 1st) they are redeemed in. After two years old points do expire, so make sure to spend them before then. You can check Coin balance information while, logged in, at the top of the page.

- Is there a list of previous rewards for people who accumulated a lot of coins? Similar to Square Enix's Ultimate Tier?
The extra rewards for Club Nintendo are for those that accumulate enough points to hit Gold or Platinum status (300 and 600 points, respectively). If you reach the required number of points in a year, Nintendo will automatically send you your reward, with no cost to you or your points.

- Does the list of eligible games update as the games come out or on some sort of schedule?
The list will be updated before the game comes out, do to things like Pre-Purchase bonus points. Any game you can buy, should already be on the list and able to redeem.

- When do they typically announce the prizes for Gold and Platinum?
Generally at the end of a Club Nintendo year, but don't expect it anytime soon. Usually it will take at least several months for them to ship it out.

- Is there anyway to enter multiple copies of the same game or device?
They have an option in the settings to make your account a family account, which means it can have sub-accounts that allows you to register multiple copies of games. The coins from all the sub-accounts all end up in the same main account coin collection.

- How does the site show what balance of coins you have to spend versus your total towards Gold/Platinum?
At the top right of the screen you can see the coin counter. The big number is your total coin amount, and the bar underneath is your progress to gold or platinum status. The number needed to advance is displayed directly above said bar. Redeeming your coins does not affect this counter, as it is only reset at the end of the year.

- How can I tell if a code is valid without redeeming it?
If you want to check if a code has already been registered, without registering it yourself, all you need to do is try entering the code while you are logged out. It will tell you the name of the game, as well as how many points it is worth, without activating it.[/customspoiler]

Let me know if I missed anything or if something breaks!

Do you really think they would have a surplus from close to 4 years ago?
Yes? Apparently they had a surplus of CD's from over a decade ago.

And besides, wouldn't it be 2 or 3 years? Or am I off?

I've heard good things about Super Metroid, is it worth 200 points on the Wii U? VC games can be played remotely through the pad, right?
Heard good things? Everything about the game is perfect. The graphics are still sharp and vibrant, the music sets the tone and atmosphere like few games ever have, and the exploration mechanics Metroid is known for were perfected to the point of inspiring an entire genre of platforming/action games.

Super Metroid doesn't just "hold up well for an SNES game," it's just as fun as it was 20 years ago when I got it when it first came out. I play through it every couple of years and I can never believe how good it is.

Reprint =/= surplus. The Nintendo Power OST looks like this and nothing from that version looks like the Club Nintendo version.

It came out in November of 2010, which is 3.5, though I thought "closer to 4 years" sounded better.

Oh w/e, they'll reprint the handkerchief then. Unless they are saving that for the big 10 year anniversary prize or something.

I'm jump on the train and say Super Metroid is still a great game. Just as awesome(but frustrating for a 10 year back then) and brilliant as it is today. Worth the coins if you haven't gotten it yet.

However, the Wii U ones are repeat deals so lots of CAGs here will skip. Kinda like, oh I dunno........repeat sales on XBL??? :whistle2:

I thought at first we were still talking about Metroid Prime, then I read your 2nd paragraph lol. I don't have the warm fuzzy nostalgia feelings for Super Metroid that you guys have, but aside from one small part of the game where you were supposed to magically know how to wall jump there's no denying it was a fantastic experience. While we are on the topic Fusion was great too.

But yeah, both games are phenomenal, no doubts at all. The Prime Trilogy are easily some of my favorite games ever, right alongside the Bioshock and Arkham series. It just doesn't get any better. I don't think I've replayed any game as much as I have those in the Metroid series, especially Prime 1.

I already have this game for the Super NES. But then again, I already had Super Mario World for two systems, and that didn't stop me...

Really, it's a tie between Super Metroid and Mario Kart 64, the supposed best game in the Mario Kart series. I already have THAT for the N64, but I haven't used my N64 in ages and it would be a lot more convenient for me to play it on my Wii U. Decisions, decisions...

NO WAY! Nintendo actually offered those in Japan a while back (same year as the badge collection), so you got to dial things down to an appropriate level. Like one of those small screen cleaners that go on the back of your cellphone with something like the Club Nintendo logo and a small shield for platinum or something equally awesome. Maybe two if we're really lucky.
Those look like cheap kitchen cloths lol

10 coins shy of 200 after getting Kirby and Brain Age. Does anybody know if they offer post play surveys on club nintendo digital games downloaded? If they do, how long before they show up?

"I heard it was just a ripoff of Shadow Complex, Arkham Origins Blackgate, and Fez" replied his teenage friend.

You aren't supposed to "magically know", you are supposed to follow the example from the little koala bear dudes when you locate them - that is their purpose. Just like the ostrich teaches you the shine charge. Sure it takes a bit of experimentation, but typically you will happen upon it by accident earlier and have an idea that it is possible. Part of the greatness of Super Metroid is that it conveys so much feeling (and inspiration/instruction) with using almost no words at all - and while still great, Fusion suffers a little by having the computer literally tell you everything rather than the environment convey it.

I love the Prime Trilogy too, but also much prefer the first. It has logical areas of the world that feel radically different, yet still connected. I found myself naturally drawn to the next area I needed to explore - that's just good game design. The latter two had a few too many "where do I go now?" moments, with running around trying everywhere that was still in question until I found it.

I was going to grab MK64 as well but with MK8 just over two weeks away and it being a Wii game (so different menu and controllers) I just don't see myself ever even starting it up.

I grabbed Kriby's adventurew 3D Classic. The 3D (playing on a XL) isn't nearly as good as Excitbike's is but the game itself is fun. I still got 255 coins left.

if I buy the brain age I'd only do it for the virus breaker (See: Dr. Mario)

Mario Kart 64 suffers from being a bit too new to really succeed on pure nostalgia, yet too old to tolerate the technical shortcomings. The frame rate is atrocious, and the track environments very sparse and bland, and it feels very slow if you have been playing the newer ones. I played the crap out of it when it was new, and now have the old N64 in the SUV for the kids to play on trips. The tracks are good and the Battle Mode is really fun, but the visuals are VERY jarring. You didn't mind way back in the day, but if you aren't getting it just to relive the "good ole' days" you probably won't like it.

And just for reference, I'm not a big "graphics are king" kind of guy, my WiiU and 3DS XL are filled with old Virtual Console games.

Unless you were just entering middle school when the N64 was at it's prime and played splitscreen MK64 and Goldeneye nearly every day after school.

Have N64 games always been that expensive (250 coins?) I could have sworn they were less before.

MK64 is still my favorite iteration of MK, technical shortcomings be damned. While I've enjoyed the entire series more or less, MK64 had a good balance in items and characters that weren't quite so the zany luck-driven play that things like blue shells have done (although MK7 struck a good balance with all of that).

Might grab it just to have for if/when N64 games are on the Wii U eShop properly for a cheap upgrade. Still no fucking excuse for them not to be.

YES. Super Metroid really does have a sense of progression and story conveyed almost entirely without any other characters or narration. It's a testament to good game design when all the elements come together properly to create an experience greatger than the sum of it's parts. Asking if it's still a good game is like asking if Mario 3 is still a good game. Any game will have it's critics and haters but Super Metroid will never feel dated.

Metroid Prime blew me away when it came out. I was so worried my favorite series would be ruined but they completely nailed it. I still never played Prime 3 even though I own the trilogy. I need to get on it.

Picked up Kirby's Adventure and Mario Kart 64. Still have coins left over to see what's available for June before the new CN Year begins. The price bump is disappointing, but hopefully Nintendo announced something in regards to Nintendo 64 games on Wii U come E3. I wonder what the price upgrade would be. I'm thinking $2.

Yes, but ....

I was just out of college when it came out, I bought two extra controllers (on top of the two I already had) just to be able to play with friends when they came over. We often played well into the night many times, particularly on Battle Mode.

Goldeneye is still fun, the graphics are blocky, but it runs very well. I've played that Dam level so many times. The level design was very tight and well thought out - it was well aware of the limitations of the platform and never tried to do anything the system couldn't handle. They faltered with Perfect Dark by crossing that line - still good, but you could tell they were trying to do things and didn't quite succeed.

Mario Kart 64, on the other hand, is crippled by the frame rate. I could deal with the sparse backgrounds, or the pre-rendered characters (only rendered in facing eight directions, then scaled/color cycled/vibrated to give the illusion of animation) - but it runs really slow and at a sub 15 FPS rate most of the time in multiplayer (maybe 25 tops in single player). It's so much better in newer ones, and most of the newer games have upgraded versions of the best tracks. There isn't a single feature that hasn't been done better in later ones. It sure does bring back memories though, if that's enough for you.

It's one of the games I absolutely loved back in the day that I can't give more than a few minutes to now. Some games just don't age well, notably many of the first 3D games - they are simply trying to do things the technology could not handle effectively yet. It's almost feels like playing an Atari 2600 version of an arcade game, fine when you didn't have better options, but now you do. Super Metroid or Kirby is a much better use of the points. They are every bit as much fun now as they were back then. I'll take a game that used it's platform effectively over one that one that was working against it and didn't quite make it.

Well just because it doesn't hold up doesn't make it fair game for nostalgia, some of us are just smart enough to stay away from trying to relive most N64 era memories. ;)

Man, that console did not hold up well for the most part.  PS1 stuff that was 3D can look pretty bad too but a lot of the great games there seem to have held up a bit better.

I'll agree that if we're comparing titles, both Kirbys Adventure and Super Metroid played to the strengths of their platforms and have aged better as a result. Kirby is a lot like Mega Man or Mario 3, large colorful and well designed sprites with tight controls. I've already sang Super Metroids praises =)

In comparison, MK64 has far more blemishes, but you could do a lot worse if we're talking first gen 3d games. The courses in MK64 somewhat make up for its technical limitations IMO.

Also, we're talking about buying it with Nintendo Fun Money. I wouldn't pay $8-10 for it on the VC but for Club Nintendo it's a decent offering.

I can think of at least 10 N64 games that are still playable and aren't hideous, but as a platform for every game that holds up there are probably 5 that you would never want to play again.

No, of course not - but if you aren't getting it for nostalgia, then don't get it. And understand nostalgia only takes you so far. It isn't going to win over anyone that didn't play the crap out of it a long time ago - whereas many other games like Super Metroid do.

And yeah the N64 doesn't hold up well at all. There are some gems, Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Star Fox 64, Zelda OOT/Majora - mostly games that didn't try to push it too far. Because when they did, they had to take ugly shortcuts, like massive fog, low frame rates or simple models.

Another system that really didn't hold up is the Saturn, I drug it back out a while back. There are many gems, but those were games it was fully capable of doing well - Guardian Heroes, Street Fighter games and some others. But many of the ones I really liked back then just didn't seem good anymore (Panzer Dragoon, for example). As astounding as some games were for the time in that generation they just feel primitive now. The games that really hold up well are the ones that were good fits for the hardware. Games that sold because they "pushed the hardware to the limits" can't trade on that anymore, the bar is astronomically higher now. Games that rely on good design and less on technical trickery do hold up. That whole generation was defined by the Big 3 trying to one up each other on graphics wow - Sony practically banned making 2D games for a good while on the PS1 - and those are many of the games that stand the test of time. Who wants to rounds up some friends for a Toshinden night these days? It was the hotness back then.

Can I ask a few dumb questions on how the Platinum/Gold Elite Club thing works? This is the first year I've ever done Club Nintendo - do you spend coins on the special items or how do you acquire those? I've got 600 coins - should I start using them up? Thanks guys!

If you add 300 worth of coins you get Gold Status

If you add 600 worth of coins you get Platinum Status

When the time comes in June or July (Can't Remember, lol) you get to choose a special item depending on what status that you got.

If you get Platinum you get to choose the selection of Gold Or Platinum status.

You can use the coins up or save them. Just know that they have an expiration date, which is usually two years from the Club Nintendo year you are in when you obtained them.

Yikes.. they keep on raising the prices on those downloads. I'm almost positive in the past, MK64 was either 150 or 200 coins. Now 250? Eh, I kinda wish I had bought a Wii 2000 Points card for $16 at Best Buy earlier this year to get this game, essentially making it $8 on the Wii Shop Channel. Oh well...

You do know MrNinjaSquirrel has compiled all this information and it's located in the extremely hard to find place known as the first post, right? Took all of a minute to find out Mario Kart 64 was 200 coins in January of 2013.
I wonder how long till someone points out I am being rude by pointing out the obvious in a blunt way...

Anyway, I don't see why so many people are surprised / miffed at a 50 coin increase on N64 games. Like I already pointed out, Mario Golf was 250 last month, so this isn't even when they increased the price, nor is it that steep of a price increase (the 3DS card case went from 250 to 400 in roughly the same span of time MK64 went from 200 to 250).

Didn't know. I usually jump right to the very last page of a thread, seeing as these updates are new. Why would I even bother going to the first page, in a 183 page thread?

Because logically and in most cases, the OP has all the information you could possibly need. Especially when just yesterday they posted that the OP had been changed / upgraded to be more helpful.

All the information I needed was right in the title before clicking:

Club Nintendo Deals ~ New Games 5/12-6/8: Super Metroid (WiiU) | Mario Kart 64 (Wii/WiiU) | Kirby's Adventure (3DS) | Brain Age: Arts & Letters (3DS)
That's why I clicked to get right to the last page. I simply wasn't aware that the price increased. That's all.

I correctly guessed that Mario Kart 64 would be up cause its obvious but Super Metroid, damn. I need that now. I got a Super Mario World code i'll trade for Super Metroid or Mario Kart 64

Well said, but if you think the Saturn doesn't hold up after all these years, you're playing the wrong games. There are many titles that would never appear anywhere else, or at least would never be better on other consoles. Psychic Assassin Toramaru and Vatlva are just two examples. I like the Saturn for its eclectic Japanese library; there are plenty of oddball games that just wouldn't have been likely on other formats.

The N64, on the other hand, has gotten crusty in its old age. The fuzzy graphics and low frame rate imparted a dream-like quality to the N64 experience, but these days, it's easier to see through the facade to the flaws underneath. There are appallingly few 2D games, and the ones we got were hardly the best available. Mischief Makers is not what I'd call Treasure's best work. Sin and Punishment is better, but it's 3D, and VERY ugly in a post-Dreamcast world.
