[customspoiler=Basic FAQ]
-Basic Info/Overview
For those that don't know Club Nintendo is Nintendo's loyalty program of sorts. When you buy a Nintendo Console/Handheld, or a Nintendo published game, you get a pin that you can enter online to earn points. These points can then be redeemed for games, accesories, and collectable items. If you earn enough points in a Club year (300 for gold and 600 for platinum, which each have their own reward), you also receive a free bonus only available to a select few. You can read the full list of eligible titles, as well as their point value, here.

-How do I get coins for digital purchases?
In order to earn coins on any digital games you purchase on Wii/WiiU/3DS/DSi, you will first need to link you Club Nintendo account to your system. Instruction for doing so can be found here.

-Can I play the Wii games on my Wii-U?
Yes, but as of now, only in Wii mode. Native Wii U support might be added later on, but will most likely require the typical $1-$1.50 fee to transfer over.

-How do I play Wii games on Wii U
You will need to enter Wii mode on your Wii U. Instructions on doing so can be found http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/features_wii_menu.jsp?menu=wii_shop&submenu=wup-wiishop-ht-redeem-code"]here[/url].

- If I don't spend coins for the entire year long period, do they carry over?
Yes, you can keep your coins past the Club Nintendo year they are redeemed in. However they only count toward gold or platinum status for the Nintendo year (june 31st-july 1st) they are redeemed in. After two years old points do expire, so make sure to spend them before then. You can check Coin balance information while, logged in, at the top of the page.

- Is there a list of previous rewards for people who accumulated a lot of coins? Similar to Square Enix's Ultimate Tier?
The extra rewards for Club Nintendo are for those that accumulate enough points to hit Gold or Platinum status (300 and 600 points, respectively). If you reach the required number of points in a year, Nintendo will automatically send you your reward, with no cost to you or your points.

- Does the list of eligible games update as the games come out or on some sort of schedule?
The list will be updated before the game comes out, do to things like Pre-Purchase bonus points. Any game you can buy, should already be on the list and able to redeem.

- When do they typically announce the prizes for Gold and Platinum?
Generally at the end of a Club Nintendo year, but don't expect it anytime soon. Usually it will take at least several months for them to ship it out.

- Is there anyway to enter multiple copies of the same game or device?
They have an option in the settings to make your account a family account, which means it can have sub-accounts that allows you to register multiple copies of games. The coins from all the sub-accounts all end up in the same main account coin collection.

- How does the site show what balance of coins you have to spend versus your total towards Gold/Platinum?
At the top right of the screen you can see the coin counter. The big number is your total coin amount, and the bar underneath is your progress to gold or platinum status. The number needed to advance is displayed directly above said bar. Redeeming your coins does not affect this counter, as it is only reset at the end of the year.

- How can I tell if a code is valid without redeeming it?
If you want to check if a code has already been registered, without registering it yourself, all you need to do is try entering the code while you are logged out. It will tell you the name of the game, as well as how many points it is worth, without activating it.[/customspoiler]

Basically im hearing.

"How DARE Nintendo give me an extra bonus for buying games/systems I was going to buy and enjoy anyways. They should just GIVE me FREE stuff at random without me having to go through the hassle of putting in a pin number and taking a few minutes to do a pin"

Honestly, they way you just worded it, is nothing is free in life unless someone just comes over to you and hands it to you.

How dare they indeed! I spent $1 on this cooking game for Club Nintendo points!

Well that's not really fair. I admit I refreshed the page about 20 times between noon and 1 yesterday. Also the CN interface sucks - the surveys have these bizarre double scrollbars. We could do something else, but we choose to do surveys. It's not exactly gracious and giving for Nintendo to do its own market research. There are plenty of other sites that do this and give out amazon or eshop/psn gift cards. It's just a better and cheaper way for them, with the bonus of building brand loyalty and advertising new games with intend to buy surveys.

But counting out the dollar values of coins and platinum status is buying in to the program way too much. Getting seriously pissed about the "rewards" is grounds for stepping back, taking a break and looking at this reasonably. But I'm not going to bow to almighty nintendo for giving out "free stuff" when they're getting something out of it. That's like the halfwits who call PSN+ games free while they pay a monthly subscription.

Nothing is free in life, period. Anyone who thinks otherwise isn't paying attention.

Even picking up a quarter off the ground takes time and energy to squat down and pick it up, so by that logic you paid for that as well. I don't really like that way of thinking either, but I can at least understand the concept. I know that time can be pretty valuable, but filling out these surveys is easy and quick enough, I'd hardly call it effort.

Though it is a pain trying to register 10+ games at once, so I can see the frustration in that scenario, but if you do things the way Nintendo plans on it (buy one game a month or so, registering as you buy, do post play surveys one at a time), its pretty seamless and gives a fun incentive for the data collection. It may not be technically free, but the cost in acquisition was insignificant enough in my mind to say otherwise.

Ew. The complaining.

You're rewarded for buying game. You can get downloadable games and physical goodies absolutely free along with a bonus reward at the end of the year. Microsoft nor Sony has a similar program from what I understand. Sure you can complain about the service, but calling it a scam is hyperbole.

Well no one said it was a scam.

Seriously though, how many times has Super Punch Out been up? Is Punch-Out U:Punch U Out in the works?

I hope so. I would love to tickle King Hippo's belly with the stylus.

STAR FOX SIXTY FOOOOOOOUR

I don't see why people complain so much. If you don't think it's worth it then don't fill out the surveys. It's something Nintendo is doing for FREE for their fans. It's an extra for loyalty buying games new. Obviously if you don't care much about the gifts then don't go through the motions of filling out a survey that takes 10 seconds to fill out and gives Nintendo some statistics on how people who actually bought the game are interacting with them.

2013 Platinum Status means 2013-2014 right? I registered my Wii U and 5 games on July 1st in the afternoon.

Yeah, I don't get the complaining.

It's mostly worthless to me as I don't care about Nintendo knick knacks, and there aren't many game options for me since the 3DS virtual console selection is pretty sucky (and I'll never get a Wii U), but it's not big burden to enter some codes and fill out some short surveys a few times a year so I have a coin balance when there is a reward game up I want.

After letting all my surveys build up and entering a few games I've got Gold already and just 240 til Platinum. With 12 months to go, I should be okay.

Nintendo doesn't make you do anything. The program is optional. Most people don't even know about it. If you're displeased with the program, if it feels like work, if you feel like the benefits aren't worth it, your best option is to not use it. Avoiding it may make you happier.

A handful of old games and some branded swag is really not worth getting upset over.

I love how people put words in my mouth. I wasn't complaining about what I got (if you look back I defended the cards), nor was I complaining about what was listed on the store. I was just saying how people can think that way, since acting like these items are completely free and it's so far better than nothing that saying anything derogatory in the least makes you an entitled ****.

Sony had a program that required Plus and basically gave you points for doing certain tasks. Outside of the membership fee for Plus, it was completely free, though I believe it was impossible to unlock all the free digital rewards without spending money. Regardless, Sony gave "everyone" in the program a free Sony branded T-Shirt (which was cool). Sony also did a short lived House Party program, which blows Club Nintendo away so many times over it's not even funny.

M$ has Xbox Live Rewards, which basically offers you some credit for pretty much spending money. You can also get some other things, so it's a decent program if you're really into this kind of thing.

There is a huge difference between picking up a coin, getting a free sample and things of the like. For instance, I got a free deck of cards from a company for simply clicking two buttons on the site (no further info was needed), where as I would need roughly 36 surveys and some cash spent to get the Club Nintendo deck. Acting like they're the same thing is rather comical in my mind, but apparently some people think that way.

2013 should apply to the year that just completed. July 1 was the start to 2014.

Your status for 2014 should show under your login name and just to the left of your coin balance.

so much rage for something that is free lol
Oh gosh, am I the one who caused this whole argument? I was entirely kidding. My reaction to that would actually be "Oh. That's disappointing."

How about we all agree on a middle ground? Like, "It's cool of Nintendo to offer us shit for free, but there seems like no reason we can't get prizes a little better, especially compared to other countries."

I missed the part where I put words in your mouth. You said it feels like work, the rewards feel like compensation, and the good ones go fast.

Does every "if" I said have to apply to you personally? No.

I said if you don't like it, it's optional, and in my opinion, you're not missing out on that much. Other people don't think it's that much of a time investment, but I agree - if you want the better junk (I don't think the junk is that great) you need to pay attention to it, and surveys can be tedious.

Do they need to put in a better brand loyalty system? Not really. Could they? Easily. Is it ok for you to complain about it? Sure, but you're killing some buzz here.

It was actually the note that I was upset, since I really am not.

Question. I bought New Super Luigi last week, but I didn't link my Wii U account to my club nintendo account until today.

Does that mean I can't get the coins for New Luigi?

I don't see anything on the Club Nintendo site that I'm linked to my Wii U now. or does it take a while to show up?

Microsoft has Xbox Live Rewards. Sony doesn't have a loyalty program at the moment ( However they have confirmed some sort of auction will take place where the currency is your Gold Trophies)

Question. I bought New Super Luigi last week, but I didn't link my Wii U account to my club nintendo account until today.

Does that mean I can't get the coins for New Luigi?

I don't see anything on the Club Nintendo site that I'm linked to my Wii U now. or does it take a while to show up?
You're SOL.

Well, I'm 300 coins in this year so far and have 50 more pending coins from post-play surverys coming up. Already gold, 250 more to get Platinum.

Actually, Nintendo CS is very helpful if you explain the situation. When I linked up my Wii to my CN account, all of the previously downloaded games did not show up under my registered games. I wrote an email to them explaining that I would like them linked, and a rep manually entered in all of the data.

About a week later, I got a post play survey for the only title that was eligible for the coins, so I would bet they would help you out with New Super Luigi U, especially since they are pushing that game digitally. Go ahead and contact them and see what happens.

And, because it can't be said enough, Donkey Kong '94 is a FANTASTIC game. If you enjoyed Mario vs. DK for GBA, this is in that vein. I wish the MvDK series would give us another entry in this style. Minis are ok, but I love the platforming combined with the puzzles.

I learned about CN from that 3DS XL deal, just using the 3DS and Wii games I'd opened I got platinum for last year and 310 points for this year. Kind of bummed I've been missing out but I guess it happens.

I'm loving the GB Donkey Kong. But I wish they'd add something to the emulation to spice it up. I.e. some of these GB games had color if played in a console that could support it, so why not add a color option? I think the game would be more attractive if it looked like this:

2013 Platinum Status means 2013-2014 right? I registered my Wii U and 5 games on July 1st in the afternoon.
They just haven't changed the icon yet. It should say 2014. But if you go to your account and look at "Coins & Status" you should see 2013 being for last year and whatever you've done since July 1st as counting for 2014. The weird thing is that they have 2015-2017 status listed on there as well. Does this mean the program ends after 2017? ;)

Anyway, I did my Animal Crossing downloadable version survey and got 60 coins just from that - 1/10 the way to platinum already! FYI, anyone who bought that day one, the survey will expire soon so get to it.

I also have 70 coins of pending post-play surveys to do by next July. Combine that with the extra surveys I still have yet to do and platinum should be no problem for next year.

As for being disappointed with the rewards, there is definitely some validity to it when you simply compare what we've gotten to what the Japanese club has gotten. I mean, the cards last year were pretty lame - there's no way around that. If we get something like that again I may just go for the gold digital rewards if they have those (though really they should give platinum people both).

So Donkey Kong is worth getting for 100 coins then?
I thought it was well worth the $4 or so I spent on it. One of my favorite regular GB games besides Link's Awakening, and I didn't get the chance to play it (at least more than a couple levels) until the 3DS release.

Damn, was too late on purchasing Metroid II, but it seemed like the weakest entry in the series from the bit I played back when I had a Game Boy.

Yeah...that's been there for at least 3 days now. I really hope we get some good rewards. I took a look through the Japanese store yesterday and was pretty impressed. They pretty much have every platinum gift we have received over the last couple years buyable for points. I think it was 900 points for that awesome 2010 statue. Our store can't even keep the worthwhile prizes in stock. Hopefully we see some changes soon.

That's when Nintendo goes out of business/only makes iOS games/gets bought by Microsoft/gets bought by Sony. :)

Good call, almost forgot to register New Leaf for the bonus points!

15-20 years ago, whenever I played it for the first time, I would have definitely agreed about Metroid 2. Now playing it again on 3DS and seeing how well it holds up is a testament to just how well designed and executed it was. Of course it's not Super Metroid or Zero Mission and lacks some of the big upgrades those games made. Still, I think that makes the game all the more impressive when you think about how limited the Game Boy hardware was and it came out 7 years before Pokemon which I put in the same category for technical achievement on the system.

Damn! Didn't know Nintendo's company started in the late 1800's! Was reading about it under the Hanafuda Cards.

FYI Nikola Tesla started talking cell phones in the early 1900's.

Ok class. That is all.

I'm really hoping the Elite reward is something collectible. This is my first year bothering to reach platinum, but if it's something lame like a Luigi hat I doubt I'd ever bother again.

It isn't just Japan. Europe been getting better reward than US.

I emailed them last night, and they replied this morning and added New Super Luigi to my list!

They were great! Thank you, or I wouldn't have contacted them.

Can anyone post what the EU/JP prizes are for gold and platinum?
EU doesn't do the Gold / Platinum stuff.

JP does a lot of the same as the US (like they got the button set, except theirs had a 25th anniversary button). The best item we never got was the pillow, though we got pretty much everything else (save the handkerchief).

My Platinum account for 2013 got reset to Gold, and the customer service basically said I'm shit outta luck  :censored: fucking twats
