[customspoiler=Basic FAQ]
-Basic Info/Overview
For those that don't know Club Nintendo is Nintendo's loyalty program of sorts. When you buy a Nintendo Console/Handheld, or a Nintendo published game, you get a pin that you can enter online to earn points. These points can then be redeemed for games, accesories, and collectable items. If you earn enough points in a Club year (300 for gold and 600 for platinum, which each have their own reward), you also receive a free bonus only available to a select few. You can read the full list of eligible titles, as well as their point value, here.

-How do I get coins for digital purchases?
In order to earn coins on any digital games you purchase on Wii/WiiU/3DS/DSi, you will first need to link you Club Nintendo account to your system. Instruction for doing so can be found here.

-Can I play the Wii games on my Wii-U?
Yes, but as of now, only in Wii mode. Native Wii U support might be added later on, but will most likely require the typical $1-$1.50 fee to transfer over.

-How do I play Wii games on Wii U
You will need to enter Wii mode on your Wii U. Instructions on doing so can be found http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/features_wii_menu.jsp?menu=wii_shop&submenu=wup-wiishop-ht-redeem-code"]here.

- If I don't spend coins for the entire year long period, do they carry over?
Yes, you can keep your coins past the Club Nintendo year they are redeemed in. However they only count toward gold or platinum status for the Nintendo year (june 31st-july 1st) they are redeemed in. After two years old points do expire, so make sure to spend them before then. You can check Coin balance information while, logged in, at the top of the page.

- Is there a list of previous rewards for people who accumulated a lot of coins? Similar to Square Enix's Ultimate Tier?
The extra rewards for Club Nintendo are for those that accumulate enough points to hit Gold or Platinum status (300 and 600 points, respectively). If you reach the required number of points in a year, Nintendo will automatically send you your reward, with no cost to you or your points.

- Does the list of eligible games update as the games come out or on some sort of schedule?
The list will be updated before the game comes out, do to things like Pre-Purchase bonus points. Any game you can buy, should already be on the list and able to redeem.

- When do they typically announce the prizes for Gold and Platinum?
Generally at the end of a Club Nintendo year, but don't expect it anytime soon. Usually it will take at least several months for them to ship it out.

- Is there anyway to enter multiple copies of the same game or device?
They have an option in the settings to make your account a family account, which means it can have sub-accounts that allows you to register multiple copies of games. The coins from all the sub-accounts all end up in the same main account coin collection.

- How does the site show what balance of coins you have to spend versus your total towards Gold/Platinum?
At the top right of the screen you can see the coin counter. The big number is your total coin amount, and the bar underneath is your progress to gold or platinum status. The number needed to advance is displayed directly above said bar. Redeeming your coins does not affect this counter, as it is only reset at the end of the year.

- How can I tell if a code is valid without redeeming it?
If you want to check if a code has already been registered, without registering it yourself, all you need to do is try entering the code while you are logged out. It will tell you the name of the game, as well as how many points it is worth, without activating it.[/customspoiler]

Let me know if I missed anything or if something breaks!

Damn, would have loved to pick up Kirby, but I only have 80 coins left and already hit platinum. That price increase on the 3DS card cases wiped me out. Wish I had gotten more the first time they were up. Oh well.
Does any one know if mario kart 64 can be downloaded to wii u because it only shows the wii symbol.
it can on Wii mode. You have to download it from the the old Wii Shop Channel if I'm not mistaken plus you need a classic controller.

Aww, I'm a few coins short for Mario Kart and don't want to waste another code for this year. Are there any more free apps that give coins on the eShop? I already download Pokebank/Poketransporter, Rusty's Baseball, and the submarine game.

I will say power sliding is much easier on a Classic Controller. It's the superior analog stick. The Nintendo 64 analog stick has too much throw.

This will be the first month this year that I get a game from CN. I went ahead and got Kirby. I wish they would offer GBA games that the ambassador 3ds got at launch.

Nope, that's it since Hulu Plus, Youtube, and Netflix don't give coins (Netflix did at one point).

Mario Kart 64 is easily my least favorite in the series...that being said if they had ported this to the WiiU about a month or two ago I would have gladly downloaded it to get a Mario Kart fix before the release of 8.

Hang on, apps give coins on the eshop? For Wii U?

Zen Pinball 2 :wiiu: Free and it earns you 10 coins after a week.

Well said, but if you think the Saturn doesn't hold up after all these years, you're playing the wrong games. There are many titles that would never appear anywhere else, or at least would never be better on other consoles. Psychic Assassin Toramaru and Vatlva are just two examples. I like the Saturn for its eclectic Japanese library; there are plenty of oddball games that just wouldn't have been likely on other formats.

The N64, on the other hand, has gotten crusty in its old age. The fuzzy graphics and low frame rate imparted a dream-like quality to the N64 experience, but these days, it's easier to see through the facade to the flaws underneath. There are appallingly few 2D games, and the ones we got were hardly the best available. Mischief Makers is not what I'd call Treasure's best work. Sin and Punishment is better, but it's 3D, and VERY ugly in a post-Dreamcast world.
I delved very little in the Japanese Saturn world, just the high spots (X-Men vs. Street Fighter, etc.). I usually waited for the ones that would come over - like Shining Force, Guardian Heroes (and yes I know I missed some gems). I really liked my Saturn back in the day, it was a shame the market shifted gears so heavily right before it came out, it was a 2D powerhouse, but Sony killed that for most of the gamers.

I thought the N64 was bad when it came out...In fact it is the reason I switched to playstation. My brother bought a n64 and I hated the shapes and colors. It seemed like everything was orange and yellow and triangular. haha. There are good games for it. "Bond" still holds up and is still impossible on the hardest difficulty setting. But as a whole, it is my least favorite Nintendo system (I haven't played a wii or wii u yet though) I would take NES or SNES any day of the week over n64 in terms of graphics and fun factor.

There's no denying it hasn't aged well graphically, but otherwise it was a phenomenal system. Playing Super Mario 64 for the first time at launch, after a life of 2D platformers and arcade shooters, is just one of those gaming experiences you just can't replicate. Hell, you can't even describe it, it was like an awakening of sorts. Something kids today will never get to experience.

Graphics aside, many of these games hold up just fine today. I'd still argue that SM64 is the greatest Mario of all time, and while I don't have the nostalgia for OoT/MM many of you do, my first playthrough of both games (less than 5 years ago) was sheer magic (especially MM, one of the few games I literally couldn't put down, staying up all night to play it). Starfox 64, Sin and Punishment, Conker, Pokemon Snap, Goldeneye, BK/BT, even Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing was a revelation at the time. And then there was Pokemon Stadium/2, which were like these insane expansion packs for the main game. Then there was SSB.... oh man, SSB. And as much as I piss and moan about Nintendo's VC shenanigans, I'd drop $10 to play Donkey Kong 64 in a heartbeat. I don't even care if it'd make me a hypocrite lol.

So yeah, I think the heavy hitters in the N64 library can still stand toe to toe with most anything that's out today. The crappy looking graphics and the absence of a 2nd joystick really are it's only failings as far as I'm concerned. The N64 was a phenomenal system, and more than anything else was the reason I ever fell in love with Nintendo in the first place. While I don't think I'd be as quick to choose it over the SNES as I would've been back in the day, I'd still choose it over the NES and the current WiiU any day. And considering the nostalgia I have for the NES I think that's really saying something.

Not to talk shit about Playstation, but aside from Metal Gear, and to a lesser extent Twisted Metal, I really didn't see a lot to love in that system. I sure as hell didn't get the same level of enjoyment from Crash/Spyro as I did Mario/BK/Conker.

Oh, thems fightin words...Playing Wipeout XL made me actually like racing games and it one one of the first games that I rmember having "real music" in it.

FFVII made me cry and from the moment you watch the opening you are in that world.

FFVIII opening I still watch about once a week on yourtube because it was EPIC before anything was being called EPIC in the video game world.

Twisted metal 2 was the goldeneye of playstation in terms of it was the game people played in groups.

I always called playstation "the lonely mans console" because it had a large amount of rpgs and single player games. For someone who enjoys story mode games, playstation has the best library.

Well to be fair I'm not big on RPG's. I didn't even care much about Pokemon until the first Stadium game hit and I never did try Paper Mario, and I can't even think of any other RPG's on N64.

Twisted Metal's multiplayer was something else though, it makes me wonder how they could botch PS3's TM so badly.

I guess I'm almost alone in loving the 64 over all my systems. I love the SNES too, as it was the first console I ever played but the pikachu 64 was the first system I ever owned & I really still love it. ^^; I guess this is because I didn't have a ps2 until the slim came out. So up until Kingdom Hearts released all I had played was the first Spyro once at a hotel. To me the systems seemed similiar so I didn't really know what I was missing.

Just remembered my one complaint about Super Metroid, and that is its length. My original playthrough as a kid was probably 10-15 hours, running around, exploring, and collecting upgrades. After 1-2 playthroughs, though, you can beat it in 3-4 hours. I downloaded it last night after work and I'm already in Norfair, will probably beat it tonight.

I wish it had a Hard Mode like Zero Mission.

Really tempted by Kirby. Especially since I have 320 coins expiring in June.

Also tempted by Mario Kart 64 event though I don't have a Wii-U but plan to one day. All the stuff about it requiring a Wii controller is meh though. Plus I still have my original cartridge.

I have an extra sky landers giants code (I believe it's worth 50 or 60), if anyone wants to trade a code pm me. Looking for a code worth a minimum of 30

I'm worried that I'll never see most of the Wii games ported to the WiiU now that there is rumor that Nintendo is thinking about new hardware. I'm also ready to abandon digital content on what might become a defunct system.

But for now I'll just buy disks and await Mario Kart 8.

I hope not, I just bought a wii u yesterday haha

Part of having information is understanding what the information is saying. The thing is, companies are always working on the next great thing and sometimes companies are planning things well in advance. Like, there was talk / rumors that Steve Jobs had worked on the iPhone 5S and the upcoming 6. So while Nintendo might have started thinking about the future or even have a good idea of what the future of Nintendo will be, we could still see another 3+ years of the Wii U.

Yeah, these companies are already into the design cycle of the next planned product before the current one's even released. After all the last year or so before release is mostly just production and marketing.

It's not coming out anytime soon. It's only natural for companies to think of the next thing, otherwise it wouldn't be good business sense which is pretty much what nintendo was saying. Just some gaming sites decided to freak everyone out by saying "OMG new console coming!!!!!!"
So your recent wii u purchases are safe, don't worry :)

Sadly, the shoot first and ask questions later approach is becoming far more common. Since the bar to become a game journalist is so low* and some sites will hire absolutely anyone 18+ to do the job, we're seeing more and more sites misunderstand situations and make obvious errors. These include things like being unaware that companies are always working on the next best thing, the last day of a quarter is typically just a placeholder and I recently saw a guy write an editorial about how next-gen bundles are a shell of their former glory because he was unaware of the difference between official bundles and retailer bundles. Sad stuff, though I see it getting worse over time. =\

* I spent 3+ years doing it... need I say more? xD

I blame my generation and on. For some reason it seems like each new generation is becoming lazier and more self entitled,(not all of them, But seems like an awful lot) which makes for the above. I don't get how some people even graduate high school anymore :/ (like my sister in law for example, but that's another story)

Also, I'm dissapoointed this morning when I checked the club nintendo store, I was hoping for new physical items, oh well, guess I'll keep hoarding my coins :(

If I have a Wii U and a pro controller for Wii U, do I really need a Wii Remote and a Classic Controller to play Mario Kart 64?

Maybe, though I've always suspected it was related to people looking to maximize views. A lot of people see the news, assume they're first and then report it to get all the views (N4G also pushes this mentality, since it's a first come first serve service). Sites then cash in if the thing becomes a fiasco, since they can report that their previous report was inaccurate or a company has come out to say that what is being said is wrong.

Yes. It runs off the emulated side, which means it won't recognize Wii U things.

Pretty much. I really dislike news companies that thrive so much on generating controversial headlines to get more clicks, which sadly is most sites now. I don't even bother reading most of those "stories" because a day later they tend to be revealed as just fluff.

Rather disappointed with what games journalism has turned into as of late; it can do so much better.

I don't have a word for word quote of what was said, but from what I've read that's not what was said at all. They are looking at releasing a new system in certain regions very soon (as in Xmas this year). Even if that just means cobbling together a cheapass Wii for the Chinese and not a true next gen system, it's not what they should be throwing money at now.

And anyone else notice how certain Nintendo-based sites didn't even seem to cover this AT ALL?

If the WiiU was rushed without enough software support, marketing, or mainstream recognition if they rush another system out it's going to be like throwing kittens into the fire.
