Crackdown - Gen. Discussion & Info

I was gonna Pre-order but maybe i`ll wait till the demo comes out... im all kinds of excited about this game but just want to make sure it doesn't have that one flaw (feature) that ruins the whole experience like shitty fucking controls or full frontal male nudity... hey , you never know
Pretty stoked for this game now, especially with the Halo 3 beta.
i have been stoked about this game for months, I hope it lives up to my expectations....the halo 3 beta was just icing on the cake for me
Here's a pretty cool video from X06 and it shows some coop in there and it explains a lot of features and answers some questions people have about the game. Well it did at least for me.

You can download it and stream it to the 360 if you wish.
Thanks for the heads up on the vid. Really enjoyed the commentary and gameplay footage, and now I want the game moreso than before.

I haven't read through the entire topic, but is there any word on whether or not there is offline co-op? This would be a blast for my brother and I.

edit: nevermind, looks like the general consensus is live only. Bummer.

Over at SA, one of the guys who worked on Saint's Row got to play the demo early.

His impressions, while horribly bias for the game he worked on, are interesting enough.

I got to sit down and play the demo for about an hour today, and my initial impression is: meh. Don't get me wrong, I've been kinda pumped about this game for a while, but I just didn't get into it from the demo. Here's what I feel about it from my (admittedly short) time playing it...note that I could be slightly biased, given my background (also expect lots of Saints Row comparisons).

Pros:

Sense of freedom. Jumping is fun, just like we all thought it would be. There were a number of times that I would see an agility orb way up on top of something and think "man, how can I get that?" and then found a way to do it. Driving is...ok, but I found myself on foot more often than not.

Framerate. I did not once notice any kind of hitch (even minor) in the framerate. I wasn't using crazy explosives or anything like that, but I was still very impressed in how they kept that FPS up.

Co-op in the demo. Didn't try it, but the option was there.

Mixed:

Trigger-based driving. Driving is something that I was really torn about, but I love driving with the triggers on the 360 gamepad, and I was glad to see that in this game. However, I was also pissed off at it, which I'll talk about in depth below.

Physics. Also something I had mixed feelings about. It was cool to have the super strength and such, but it seems like the physics were still missing something...they're not as "out there" as Saints Row (especially the ragdolls, which is where my major beef is...I like ragdolling a LOT), and it just felt muted as a result, which was especially noticable against the rest of the exaggerations in the game.

Aiming system. You can aim your gun like in Saints Row, or you can hold LT and lock on. When locked on, you can use RS to select which part of the body you want to aim for (head, chest, right arm, left arm, legs). In theory, this works really good, but in practice...it felt really awkward. Maybe it's because I'm not used to it, and I was getting better at it by the end, but all I was doing for the most part was locking at close range and shooting people in the chest with a shotgun...any time I tried to do anything more complicated, I died.

Demo limitations. I know why they're there, and they really are pretty lax (1 hr. time limit, one whole island (out of 3) to explore), but I really can't say this is a pro. Could have been much worse.

Cons:

Driving. Driving in this game feels really cheesy. Brakes don't feel responsive, steering doesn't respond all that great, car physics feel really...off. And not in a good way. I did not like driving in Crackdown, not the agency vehicles or the cars off the street (of which there did not seem to be many variants).

Inability to shoot and drive at the same time. You can't do it. After SR did it so well (in my opinion), there's really no excuse for this.

Lack of activities. You can shoot gang members, you can race, and you can jump around. That seems to be about it.

Music. There seems to be only a few songs in the demo, and they're not terrible, but they're not good either. I couldn't find a way to switch radio stations or anything like that either. This is minor, as I can play other music on my 360 at home, but was very frustrating on the kit I was playing on.

Close range combat. Oh god is this terrible. When you get right up close to someone, your RT (WHICH IS SHOOT EVERYWHERE ELSE) becomes punch. And punch is pretty weak. It's pretty easy to get into punch range too...even when I was avoiding it, it would end up happening, and would piss me off every time. Also, every time this happened, my view would get screwed up somehow, and I'd be looking the opposite direction staring at the ground.

Story? I didn't see any. "Go assassinate this dude. He's bad, we promise." "Get this supply depot so you can respawn somewhere else." That's about it.

Aliasing. First thing I noticed was how bad the aliasing was in the garage you start out in. Ask Feenix, I was bitching about it on AIM. Though, it didn't look as bad in the screenshot I took, so it may have been my display.

Lack of customization. Sure you get to pick from 8 burly dudes, but I want to customize my character in every way possible. I picked the Russion guy, who is pretty BA, though.

Flashiness. Maybe it's just me, but there is way too much neon in...whatever city Crackdown takes place in. Driving through the one race mission I did almost gave me seizures.

In the end, it seems like it could be a fun game, but at this point it's looking more and more like a rental for me. I'm interested to hear other goon opinions when you get the chance to play it, though, and I'll probably play it a few more times next week to see if my own opinion changes. I know it looks from the lists above that the cons greatly outweigh the pros, but it was fun, it just seems to have a lot of faults as well.

I'm worried that they're just packing in the Halo 3 demo because they know this game won't be good enough to stand on its own legs.

I think that its not that the game is bad its just that they are worried it will be another Viva Piniata (great reviews, no sales).

Very true, but additionally think of it this way.

Beta is ready, and you have the choice of A: Spending money to promo systems AND money to promo crackdown(we know how much PR matters, look at lost planet and gears). or B: Pack it into their next hopeful big title and promote both together.

I do think crackdown is going to always be plagued with the halo beta curse, but I doubt people will be stuck with a crappy game just to get the beta.

I bet GS/EB is loving the whole thing though. I predict Crackdown will be the biggest trade-in game, not because it is bad, but rather because the Halo gamer may not necessarily care about the game once they are into beta.

I've been interested in it since I watched the demo videos. The last GTA I played was GTA III (I did play a small fraction of VC though) so the whole concept of running around in a big city and blowing shit up still sounds fun to me.

Getting a Halo 3 beta ticket is a bonus for me f I buy this game. I may want to pre-order soon though.. or just pick it up at Bestbuy on relase. ($10 off coupon anyone?)
is the halo3 beta invite going to be valuable at all? i am interested in this game, but not halo.
It could be, depending on how limited it is I guess. I pre-ordered Crackdown the other day, so hopefully that guarantees a beta ticket. If the beta code is anything like the LE of Halo 2, then everyone and their mother will have one and it won't be worth shit.

From what I've read at Bungie, it's not going to be a piece of paper with a code on it. The Halo 3 beta will be available for you to download from the marketplace if you have Crackdown in the drive. I'm pretty sure that's how it's going to work.

Is each copy of Crackdown uniquely serialed? Else I'll just find someone else with it, borrow their disc, and download.

Don't know. I don't think anyone will until the actual release of the beta.

You can pick up Hulk: Ultimate Destruction right now for 10 bucks. I don't know if it's BC or not, but it's the most fun I've ever had in a free roaming game. If you want to blow shit up, I suggest checking it out.

Message from one of the developers over at the official Crackdown forums:
Hey Guys - while I can't give you a specific date yet, we are planning to put the demo out very shortly. The delay will be VERY SHORT. I reapeat VERY SHORT!!!

Also, you guys should know that this wasn't Microsoft's or any one person's fault. Basically we all just want the demo to ROCK and we determined it needed a wee bit more time to bake before it was ready for primetime.

I also want to reiterate that the delay in the demo will have ZERO impact on the release of the game.
I think the simple fact that the 1upyours podcast guys seem to unanimously love their media copy of the game makes me want to get it. They never rave about games and this seems to be one of the few ones they're really excited for.

Awh shucks, my "weekend" ends on Thursday, I was kinda hoping to get some time to play the demo. I'm extremely excited for this game-- I hope it comes out before the 28th so I can pre-order and get a H3 beta copy for certain.

I agree with you. While I am not a huge fan of the 1up site, the podcasts and print media publications have mostly synched with my taste in games. They are definatly all over it, even though they say it's rather short.

I can live without halo(i know i know, keep me away from perpendicular 2x4s please) but I would like to get the game at release if the demo meets my expectations.

There's a "DOWNLOAD THE DEMO TODAY" CrackDown banner on the Xbox Live dashboard.

We'll see, I guess.

Yeah, I noticed that. Nothing in the marketplace.

Hopefully it's up tonight.

I've been looking forward to a demo for a while.

yeah the 1up guys appear to love it, but seemed worried about the length. It appears to have replayability as taking out the 3 "mini boses" per say, affect how the game plays out. For instance 1 miniboss is in charge of getting guns on the street. If you take him out first, then as the game goes on, you won't see the new improved guns as quickly due to the fact you take that aspect out of the enemies control.

Unless the demo sells me on this. Its going to be a rental for me. Actually I think ebay will be flooded with copies of this game because people want it for the Halo 3 beta.
if there is no unique serialization, ill be renting this for the halo. Or pooling with friends.
I would doubt there isn't. Microsoft knows the demo alone will sell games.
50 dollars... for that? I already have saints row, this one just looks more futuristic and more repetitive.
As other posters pointed out, the 1up yours guys have been slobbering over it for two weeks. It sounds very good, and more like a superhero game than saints row or GTA. They compared it to Hulk Ultimate Destruction and Mercenaries.

And without the "it's cool to be a thug" atmosphere.
