Dark Souls (Project Dark) - October 4, 2011

stuck on capra for the moment on my latest guy. cannot catch a break. must have run this 10 times already. tried summoning the first time but every summon failed. much harder using magic than melee in my experience.

Need I say more "stupid" deaths tonight. A number of them due to a lack of patience. What's up with the electrical guy in the temple?

After getting the shortcut from the temple to the shrine I explored some areas that I am obviously not equipped for yet. The Drake sword is nice.

Man, I'm getting my butt kicked by the same ghost knight with a greatsword. Since he's a ghost it's so hard to see him and you cannot lock on to him at all! He also knows how to kick you so you can't block, his sword has a like a 270 degree swing, and he rolls around which is hard to see where he went!

Everyone seems to be way ahead of me... I'm still in the Undead Berg. I went down into the bottom of that tower to fight that fat knight with the huge bone club/sword. It's pretty much a 1-hit kill if you get hit, but I ended up beating him by
luring him up to the top. He doesn't like to go outside the main entrance to the tower, so you can move up and strike him with R2 after he strikes and misses you. So he gave me about 5000 souls and a ring that lets you carry more stuff.

Here's an easy/safe way to kill him
Open that door at the very bottom (probably best to open from other side). He can go out that door but not that far and he'll quickly return to his original spot after he attacks. Just stay outside with a spear, move in a little bit so he sees you, he'll follow you outside to the top of the stairs, let him swing at you with you blocking (or move down the stairs more so you don't get hit), then run and stab him 3 times with the spear as he walks back to his original spot. It's time consuming, but it's the easiest/safest way to kill him.

For that ghost knight, I actually opened my guide book (trying to play without it) for the first time. Apparently he's not a ghost, just a regular knight using a permanent invisibility spell which is why I can't lock on to him.

I don't know which spot is best for me to go to next. I feel kinda lost.

I have rang the bell and killed the butterfly. Now my next options are Drake Lair/ 100ft Octopus Magic Torpedoes of death shore/ Skeletal Graveyard/ That place that has a locked up blacksmith with can't hurt with sword ghost. Where have you guys gone after beating the butterfly?

Capra Demon using the key that you get from the butterfly

Might have missed this door. I'll go check in Undead Burg again, thnx.

Got it
That stupid door on the bridge, I had completely forgotten about since I never run through there anymore

I am about an hour in at this point, just started last night when I gave up on the CE turning up and opened my standard copy.

I am excited and its cool to see a lot of the regulars from DS posting in here. Still feel a bit overwhelmed but I am sure I will get the game here after a few hours.

Are you talking about the one that's through the bottom door after the fatty? I went down there, out into that field and those Crystal Zombies came after me. I killed one of them, then backtracked a bit and went left from that door. I found a large black knight (similar to the one in the Undead Berg). I almost killed him, but he got me. Wonder if he's got the thieve's ring on? I hope that's his drop :)

Sorry to hear about your CE. I preordered like a year ago when the game was first announced. Then when they announced that all copies were supposed to be the CE if they were pre-ordered, I found that Amazon had the CE listed separately, so I canceled my order and got the CE.

Anyway, the game is just like Demon's Souls, but a little more massive and with new twists. I feel right at home with this game after getting the platinum in Demon's Souls.

What's the best way to get back to the merchant after I've already opened up the shortcut back to Firelink? I guess I have to run through the first part of the undead burg? Similarly, can you go backwards across the bridge if the dragon is still there (I wussed out and went beneath him using the stairs instead of running past him through his tunnel)? Seems like he breathes fire far more quickly when you start from the stairs than when you first sprint across the bridge to the stairs.

There is another merchant somewhere near the temple. I remember running into him last night, but cannot remember where. I do remember he was at the bottom of one/several flights of stairs.

What's everyone doing for stat advancement? STR to 16 first, then ? I had to bump DEX to use a bow properly, then I'm onto endurance. Any other thoughts other than VIT?
Any tips for the Capra Demon?
I imagine I could take him easily if it weren't for the dogs but they make it nearly impossible to dodge or heal. I read running up the stairs will let you kill them by themselves but I tried that and the Capra Demon followed me and killed me.
Absolutely kill the dogs by funneling them up the stairs first. The Demon will lunge attack, so be prepared to have your shield up for that. Once the dogs are disposed of, STAY NEAR HIM. If you circle strafe with your shield up and wait until he's done attacking, you can nip away at his health until dead. He's actually super easy and you could try getting him below you for a drop attack, but since he's not scripted to stand below you it's a gamble. You also risk forcing him to lunge attack, which is an overhead and not totally mitigated by shields. I'd recommend the safer way of just keeping him on a tight leash and striking when the time is right.

The melee combat system is just far more rewarding, especially plunging a greatsword into an enemy's back.
Concerning the Forest near Darkroot Gardens.
Finally saved up 20k souls to get into the forest. Farming the NPCs in there like a motherfucker, went from level 18 to 52 in an hour or two. If you proceed slightly further than the NPCs you come across a catlike thing that tells you about Art-something's grave not existing. She then says not to bother looking for it and you are given a choice yes/no. I said no and she gets pissy and won't talk to me. Anyone pick yes? What does she do?
Man, can't thank you enough for posting this.
I farmed the Hellkite dragon for half an hour to get the 20k souls and went there. Slightly pissed I didn't know the covenant leader there doesn't allow you to kill the only humans that respawn for 2k each, so I ended up breaking my vow without getting to use the cat ring (summons you if invaders, AKA other covenants, enter the forest) she gives you for PvP. Oh well, next game is just around the corner and you have to kill the Eastern knight for his sword to get the weapons trophy anyhow. Read my next spoiler for an answer to the rest of your question.

For anyone who goes to farm here early
since the bodyguard 'ghosts' can't be targeted, use the steps near the door to your advantage. You can quite literally make them jump off the cliff if you lead them to the second landing and drop down. Just move to the end of the ledge and hold your shield up so they bounce off you into the chasm. 2k souls a pop, but only one respawns that I found. The rest are targetable clansmen, so make sure if you want this covenant that you do not talk to the 'cheshire cat' until you're done farming. She gives a trophy for joining so say yes to everything.

So I just encountered something yesterday and thought "Yup, this sure is dark souls"

You guys might want a heads up or not but It took me over 1 hour to set things back right.

You can get cursed for the first time when you venture through Depths. Be extremely weary of holes in the ground when you're in tight corridors as this lead to areas with geckos enemies that spew cursing clouds. These clouds are instant death if you get afflicted with curse and until removed with a purchased item (6k souls) it caps your health at 50%. Only fight them one at a time, after they spew their cloud run in and finish it off quick. Being in human form boost your Curse resistance so that might help.

I was supposed to go to sleep just then all this happened and I couldn't so I'm dead tired right now

Moving my tips post up for newcomers and some additions that might have been missed.

1) Choose Wanderer or Pyromancer because they have the highest starting attributes in the game. This is not just based on starting level, they absolutely start with more allocated points by up to four over any other class would have at that comparable level. By the end of the game, it will not matter what class you chose other than you will have a competitive edge by a few points until you level cap.

2) Choose the master key as your gift. This is not obtainable by any other means in the game unless you start as a thief. Everything else can be picked up otherwise.

3) Taurus Demon:
Remember the tutorial? Good, now climb the ladder up the tower when you're on the ramparts and kill the two archers. Drop down and bait the boss, sprinting back to the ladder. Once on top, walk off when he's below (doesn't matter how far away he is as long as he's standing there) and hold R1. Rinse repeat by running him up and down the path until dead. Easy mode.

4) Want a good sword n' board right away?
From the start of the game (past tutorial) look for a path spiraling downward near the camp. Once all the way down, head right and find another spiral path heading up. If you were smart and took the master key, you will open a door at the top that leads to the Valley of Drakes. You will not have to travel far here before you cross a rope bridge and find a sleeping dragon guarding three glowing spoils. Mmmmmmmmmm. Licking your chops, sneak past his arm and run towards the two bodies closest together. Spam that X button and enjoy your death knowing you have some incredible starting gear. If you're brave (like me ;)), you can go back for the last spoil (soul item worth 1k) and your body, but you will need to time your approach past his breath. Don't worry, it will hardly kill you if you mess up the timing so just practice. Getting the last item will require another run back for your body, though.

5) Focus on putting points into Faith first until you have 14, so that you can both learn Heal and use the sword from #4. After that, I highly recommend balancing Vitality and Endurance. Only focus heavily on endurance if you're close to the 25% threshold of your equip weight. You want to have the freedom to move quickly and easily without a drain on your stamina for dodging. Vitality increases your HP. HP gooooooooooooood. More you have, the less likely you'll be one-shot. After these primary stats, go for Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, or Faith pending your damage build.

6) Strip off some armor if you're over 25% of your equip weight. Right now you're as good as naked anyway, so why be encumbered by heavy armor when that downward smash you failed to dodge is going to kill you anyway? If you've followed the tips above, you can probably get away with just removing your hat with a few points into Endurance. It won't be missed. Sword and shield are the only two essentials, so work your armor around that.

7) Hellkite Dragon
The Undead Parish harbors many deadly foes, but none so much as this red drake. While I haven't personally killed him yet, I have taken his tail for a trophy. Rather, one of the rare dragon swords in the game. To do this you will need to find the undead merchant in the main area of Undead Burg or already have a short bow handy and roughly 15-25 large arrows (they cost 50 souls each, so plan accordingly). Next, make your way underneath the bridge below the dragon and clear any nearby enemies that would interrupt your progress. On the last sheltered platform WALK to the edge where you can see his tail swinging. Make sure you have a clear view of your target (arrows tend to collide with an invisible wall) and aim towards the top of the bridge where his tail swings. Loose the arrow roughly a split-second before it would swing into your path and quickly move back to the cover of the bridge. He will rage for a second and land above you, but quickly returns if he's unable to attack. Rinse repeat until you receive the weapon via message. This sword has an alternate attack whenever you 2H strong attack, which is extremely effective against a future boss. Each use damages the sword by 30, so use sparingly.

8) Havel's Ring (AKA Weight Equip +50%)
Havel is downstairs right before the Taurus Demon and wields a tower shield and a giant club. However, you will require the master key to open his tower dungeon. His armor is also incredibly thick and thanks to the ring he carries, moves fast. What he lacks, is brains. You can bait him all the way back to the main floor and he'll stop short of chasing you out of the tower. Unfortunately, he's not entirely stupid and will retreat downstairs still facing you. Using the the advantage of his leash point, you can keep him in front of you and simply dodge his attacks and lunge in for a strong attack. Pending what sword you have, this will only scratch him each time but with enough patience he will go down. This ring will allow you to hold a heavier weapon/shield or perhaps some stronger armor without the movement penalties from weight equip. If you'd rather not focus on endurance right away, this is the ring for you.

9) Early Farm Area
Want to make 300 souls early every ~30 seconds? Remember the dragon from #7 and how infuriating he is to get past? You'll be praising his help in a second! When crossing the bridge you will likely use the stairs to the right halfway across to avoid being the next KFC menu item. Additionally, he kills all the skeletons nearby in his fit of rage. If you continue downstairs and ignore the path you took to get the Drake sword, you'll find a shortcut to the first Undead Burg bonfire you used. Putting two and two together, you can use this to respawn the enemies above you and take a quick trip to the bridge again where he'll obligingly kill them over an over. To smooth the process, I found that just popping out of the stairs and taking an immediate right running past the spear skeleton a couple steps before retreating would bait the dragon and give you plenty of time to get downstairs without harm. You also do not need to use the ladder coming down, just fall off and time a falling roll right to the bonfire. Using this method you can farm 20k souls every 30 minutes, the perfectly safe way to farm for whatever you desire.

There's the blacksmith near the church, but I don't think he sells the bow, which I now want. I didn't buy one earlier because my dexterity was too low to use it, but my DEX is now up to 12 so I want a bow.

Nope, I opened the sealed door in Darkroot Garden
that requires the 20k souls item from the blacksmith Andrei to open. Inside is an Invisible Knight (finally defeated), normal Caster, and now an Invisible Thief who's really fast, even harder to see and keeps backstabbing me!

@Jodou - about #4
So is Astora's Straight Sword really good? Last night I couldn't decide to upgrade STR for the Black Knight Sword or FTH for Astora's Striaght Sword, but ended up using Black Knight Sword. Kind of regretting it since it's a greatsword and after one swing leaves me wide open.

I just now am entering the Parish so maybe you encounter the dragon again later at another bridge, but if you want to get from behind the Dragon back to the male undead merchant can't you just:

Climb down the ladder into the room with the rats, walk below the bridge under the dragon to the room with the staircase that leads to the surface of the bridge, bypass that staircase and climb down the ladder you kick down to reach the Undead burg bonfire, then walk over to the side area with the two spear guys to reach the merchant? Or are you talking about a different area of the church?

If you already have the black knight sword, you're beyond needing Astora's anymore. Astora's is really just to give you a head-start and even the Drake Sword is better to a point. I could see it still being useful against phys. immune enemies, but I've yet to meet one that the other two didn't rape easier. Keep in mind the Drake sword increases fire and magic resist by 15, so it's a superior weapon in that respect alone.

I would personally use this setup: Black Knight Sword with the shield you got with Astora's for open areas/bosses and only use light attacks unless you're following up a backstab. You can literally stun lock some enemies with backstab, strong attack, light attack, repeat. For hallways/fire damage enemies, switch to drake sword. Put talisman/wand in your other shield slot for quick heal spells or whatever.

Are you're talking about the Red Dragon disappearing? He usually comes back if you go to the other side of the bridge where that Soltaire guy is and go across it again. If he doesn't, stand near Soltaire and go to Options, then Quit Game. Load your game again, cross the bridge and he will definitely come back (it always has for me).
But watch your back since it's going to shoot fire from the rear

@ Jodou - Ah I see. Thanks for the info.

I think that would work. Not sure if that's easier than going forward from the beginning, though, since I'd have to go back through all the relatively tougher enemies in the parish (I won't mention specifics since you're just now getting there and I don't want to spoil, but I'm basically at the end of the parish). I'll probably just try it one way and if it seems like a pain I'll try the other. I was hoping someone might mention some shortcut that I forgot, or some other tip.

Semi spoilers about a return visit to an area.
I went back to the Undead Asylum and fought the tutorial boss version 2.0. He has quite abit of HP. The butterfly took 3 fire orbs and a fireball to beat while this guy took 6 fire orbs and 10 fireballs. When you land in the area run and roll immediately to get behind him. He does a massive explosion attack that is conal and extends part way behind him. You get a titanite slab and 20k souls for beating him. A black knight is also near him which drops an item that can be used to open another area later in the game. Also while you are there you can trade a cracked red eye orb to Sparkly (Hawk Girl) for two of the curse remove items.

Oh god I was watching a stream in some later areas in the game. This is concerning the Capra Demon and is a minor spoiler.

Apparently they become a normal enemy and at one point you have to fight 3 of them at the same time on a narrow walkway. They respawn too.

This is concerning a fuzzy rolling enemy in the Forest.
Jesus fucking christ there are these large things that look like the "cheshire cat" except they're fuckhuge and have an unblockable rolling attack. They are also insanely fast. I saw one and began fighting it and was having a hard enough time thinking it was a mini-boss. Got it down to about a quarter life and saw, to my horror, 2 more running at me through the misty forest at light speed. I just ran the hell away. Man thats gonna be a tough fight when I head back in there.

And thanks Jodou for the info. I actually ended up shooting an arrow at the NPC in question and it laughed at me and called me names and vanished cheshire cat-style. I guess this is kind of a spoiler-ish question for anyone concerning beating the game:
So there is a New Game+ option? Does it increase difficulty by numbers like in Demon's Souls? Add new monsters, new items, etc.?

Here is some very helpful info for those getting into Blighttown:
You will be attacked by guys with blow darts that make hardly any sound, are very hard to see, and do nothing in the way of indicating that you are being hit unless you watch your lifebar and see slivers go down. The real bitch of this is that it inflicts a status called Toxic, which is like hyper-poison. You want some of that cure all status moss before coming down to Blighttown. The good thing though, is that once you kill these bastards with the blowdarts, they do not respawn. So, if you're Toxic'd and you know you're gonna die, suicide rush as many as you can so you have less to deal with when you return.

Rats have a chance to drop humanity. I'm surprised that you don't have move humanity items. I probably had 5-6 at that point.

I've also noticed that I seem to randomly get humanity while killing things. I'm not sure why.

Whao. Just hit a glitch which caused a death. Fighting the two skeletons at the beginning of the graveyard outside the shrine when one of them hit me and it drove me through the ground and I plummeted to my demise. I must reiterate that this was not off a cliff, but through the ground. I literally saw myself fall through the ground and come out the bottom. Strange way to start off the night.

LMAO, I just got invaded for the first time and got owned... The invader was wearing a dragon head and breathing fire out of it while moving. Tried rolling but got hit in the process. Then miraculously (most likely due to lag) he was able to backstabb me (not a parry) while he was in front of me.

At least the person was waving to me letting me know he was coming after me, then they bowed after I died. Haha, no one ever did that for me in Demon's Souls. They usually just tried sneaking up behind me or waited in a corner while I looked for them.

Beat the gaping dragon. It was pretty simple, I was able to cut off the tail easily too.

Got cursed by the basilisks though when I was going back the for spider shield that I missed. Now I have to grind some souls for a cure.

So, I got my PS3 collectors edition from amazon.

Today I went to gamestop to exchange a defective disc and just ask out of curiosity if they had any Dark Souls CE's left.

He said if they have any they are for sale because it's been over 2 days.

They had multiple for both system and I ended up buying the 360 version.

I have no clue what I was thinking as I should have got an extra PS3 version so I could open one and keep one incase the price gets ridiculously high.

idiot.

Yeah, Gaping Dragon was pretty easy. I think I only died once.
Just cleared out the Undead Asylum including the Stray Demon. I was getting frustrated until I discovered that using the Jagged Ghost Sword works wonders on him due to the extra bleed damage. Soul Level 30 now...just a few more points in dexterity and I can use the Black Knight Sword. :D

Anyway, I think this is GOTY so far. It's so brutal and unforgiving yet I feel compelled to press on.

So has anyone who has seen spoilers for the pendent tell me what I need to do or not do to make use of it without any spoilers? I see rumors that it does nothing but as a trade item, that it does some kind of alt ending, that you can't join any covenants to make use of it, etc. I've tried treading lightly by searching the internet for it but I am afraid I'm going to hit big spoilers.

Good and bad last night. Summoned a person to help me with the gargoyles and we annihilated them. Rang the bell...all was good. Proceeded to go to the Lower Berg and didn't make it far. Those d@mn assassins kept kicking my @ss. Could be the fact that I was really tired. Then I decided to try and make the run in the Valley of Drakes. Needless to say, an ending (several) of epic failures. Maybe my run from New Londo was flawed.

Are you entering the tunnel instead of turning left and following the cliff line once you cross the short bridge? That's the mistake I almost made.

No luck at all with Havel, he either runs away too fast to get a hit in or sticks his big thing out the door to smash me, guess I'll just have to save it for later.

Yeah, works the exact same way. I plan to join them next play-through, since I'm just covenant hopping for the trophies right now.

Grinding to level 60 has really trivialized these bosses lol. So much for super harder game FROM! It's still challenging, but a boss hasn't killed me since the Capra Demon. Honestly though, I don't feel the bosses have been very hard at all unless you're close-quartered sadly. I feel as though Demon's Souls was far more challenging, regardless of level. These guys are just walking soulbags.

I seriously should start htis game, but I haven't even started Ico collection. I want to Plat both or at least one of those before I start Dark Souls.

Ok, so I went back down to where Havel was, and went to that area out that door at the bottom to the Darkroot Garden. I got killed by the black knight down there, and when I went back, a crystal zombie attacked me. Long story short, I think the black knight fell off the cliff or something b/c he's gone and I got 2,000 souls for nothing. The problem is that I didn't get his drop :( Anyone know what he drops?

The Black Knight at Darkroot Basin dropped a Blue Titanite Chunk for me if I remember correctly. I think all Black Knights have a chance to also drop the Black Knight Sword or Black Knight Shield though.

Is there a short-cut/bonfire close to the entrance to Blightown? I got my curse recovery item, but I'm a little afraid to use it if I die in Blightown and have to go past the basilisks again.

If you picked the Master Key as a gift there is a good shortcut. Firelink > New Londo > Valley of Drakes > Blighttown. Alternatively in the sewers near the door that leads to Blighttown you can open up a shortcut that leads to near the beginning of the sewers and that path will let you avoid most if not all of the basilisks/frogs.
