I also remembered one thing about the Thief. I chose him because he had pretty high stats compared the rest (almost chose the wanderer b/c it seemed like he had the best stats). I went with the Thief b/c he starts w/the Master Key and you are also able to choose another perk, so it's basically getting 2 perks instead of 1. Only difference is that I can't use magic right now.
Thanks for the tips; I haven't gotten to the Taurus yet, but that sword you were talking about--
is it in the area after the Raven takes you to the next area? I started going up to the Berg and looking around there, so should I backtrack to the first bonfire to find that special path, or is it someplace else?
Thief may have high stats, but a same level wanderer and pyrmoancer will have more overall allocated stats by 2 IIRC. That is why they're the best choice.
For the sword
Undead Burg is above Valley of Drakes. You need to return to the starting camp in Firelink and look for the path in that immediate area. It's left of the only NPC near the bonfire IIRC.
I want to punch this ing game in its stupid ing face!!!! Arggggggggghh!!!!!! Agghhfjjjsjjj!!! !!!
Also, how do I beat the bell gargoyles? They are raping my face right now. I'm a pyromancer that can't wield my good weapons because my strength isn't high enough, even though I've dumped at least 5 or 6 points into it...
I love the game... just started playing last night. It took me a bit to get my Demon's Souls mojo back though. Only thing I don't like is I have no clue where I am going. I just go a direction and if I start getting hammered... I turn around. I kept playing for a few hours last night until some big Knight one shotted me.

It starts to make sense once you near the end of the Undead Parish, where an elevator takes you directly back to the Firelink Shrine. At first I didn't like the change in design but now that I see how it's set up, it's really no different than having the hub in the first. The world is just seemless now instead of teleporting back and forth. I'm not entirely sure if it was a bad design decision or if it adds to the element of difficulty yet. I just like having a goal to work towards honestly and Dark Souls just throws you in saying 'go'.

If you are 2/3rds of the way to the requirement you can two-hand the weapon to multiply your strength by 1.5 and meet it, though that leaves you without the ability to block with a shield.
Before and after that particular incident, I've consistently had 10. And the only time I kindled was when I was trying to figure out why I only had 6 ever since then it's always refilled back to 10.
There is something that makes Estus flasks refill "randomly" while you're wandering around. You'll hear a whoosh sound and see a bright light at the top of the screen. This has happened to me several times, though not consistently, and I can't figure out what makes it happen. One time I was fighting outside the parish church, and it happened three times quickly in succession, so my flasks went from 3 to 6 in a few seconds. Other times it won't happen for hours. I thought maybe it was my messages getting rated, but mine are all still at 0
Aha! You are an bottomless well of info about this game, sir. Thanks! I wasn't close to a bonfire that I know of, so I assume it's pretty liberal with the distance for that.
Also, I guess it takes 2 humanity to rekindle if you're hollow, since you have to become human and then also use humanity to rekindle. Ah, well. I just unlocked the first shortcut back to Firelink so I can use that level 2 bonfire for awhile anyway.
Yeah it seems you just have to be in that bonfires "area" of the world, doesnt have to be near it.
I have also compiled some useful stuff I am grabbing out of the guide. Im not reading to much outside of the basics until NG+ and its unfortunately not 100% accurate at least according to player's findings/namco knowledgebase info but its solid for the most part. Im just gonna keep posting it here and on the wikidot as I gather it.
I'm pumping almost all my stat points into endurance. I like having to able to block up to 3 hits from even the biggest enemies, but I'm starting to worry I'm ignoring other valuable stats. Am I going to run into trouble later on if I keep boosting only Endurance?

You will wanna stop around 40 or 50 and then start worrying about damage output. I would personally bump it to 30 and then return to it after you find a weapon you like and have the stats for it plus are scaling nice with its specialty.
That was the case in DS for the most part and it seems to be similar. All stats have diminishing returns around 40 or 50 so any higher will hurt you in the long run(until you run out of things to level up)
I think I will focus on stats next so I should have the info tomorrow unless it winds up online sooner(might already be up on one of the wikis)
Man, I was trying to plan my stats for a PvP build but it seems like my Large Sword of Moonlight from the first game was nerfed and scales with magic now. Guess I won't pump faith past 14 then. I killed a few of those optional bosses in Undead Burg last night and I think I got the rare weapon off the first Black Knight I've killed. I can't really remember because I was like neat and just moved on without looking at it. Now I saw it on the list and I'm wondering if I should just pump strength to use it since it requires something like 30. Seems like all the decent large swords have a high strength requirement to use and it modifies swing speed soooooooooooooo I guess it's a decent PvP stat. I've fought dex builds before and while you can move quickly, it really doesn't matter since I would cleave with a strong attack and they'd get caught every time. God help them if they tried to use bows rofl.

You can get a great starter sword, shield, and a weight equip ring (this one requires some work killing a tough mini-boss, though) early if you choose it. It's seriously the best gift you can take unless you're a thief.

I didn't. And I didn't even take the pendant or anything else that probably helps later. I took something I thought would help immediately, and it's probably the worst thing I could have chosen: the binocs. But live and learn. I don't expect to even remotely see or get everything on my first play-through, and I'm really trying hard not to look in the guide much. On subsequent play-throughs I'll try to be more completionist. I feel like trying to be perfect the first time really ruins a lot of the fun.
I've been trying to kill that guy and keep getting stomped.
See my tips guide I updated a few pages back. I outlined an easier way to kill him. There's also a Black Knight nearby if you go down the steps just before that tower. They look intimidating
but if you just block and circle-strafe, you can back-stab them super easy.
He's the one I got the semi-rare Black Knight sword off I think.

Thanks for the tip. Yeah, I kill that black knight from time to time. Not tough. But that Havel knight smashes me every time. One shot and pretty fast for a lug. Will try your tip, thanks.

It's random. They're the same enemy, just different locations. I keep hearing that blah, blah humanity raises your magic find but so far I've got every rare drop from mini-bosses. I didn't even know they were supposed to be that way until my brother was like, I didn't know the boar drops that helm!
BTW, somebody was talking about needing a 20k item to get into the darkroot forest. Did you know about the
other path into there past Havel? I didn't venture far, but would that make it so I don't need it to get in?

If you met Soltaire
just before the bridge with the Hellkite Dragon, you can reverse hollow and summon him to help you. Also, treat them like the twin chimera boss from Demon's Souls (if you know what that means) and cut off his tail immediately. His counterpart will spawn tail-less as well if you do making it 10x easier (and you get an axe to boot).
I personally didn't request help and killed them on the first try heh.

I have no idea who Soltaire is lol, is he that one guy standing alone on that stone balcony? I talked to that guy and he game me a bunch of stuff. Hellkite dragon? is the the drake dragon? And I usually just spawn at firelink, take the elevator to the parish and make my way to the Bell Tower/Gargoil boss. Where in the route can I summon him(assuming I even can)

Don't need the item to enter, the path splits down the forest road, one needing that item and one not. I don't have the item but the other path lead towards the boss area and new enemies .

OK, that's what I kind of figured. So the area they were talking about is another tier higher than the forest.

That happened to me. I had like 6 left then all of a sudden my head had an orange glow and it went up to 11. I was currently in the middle of a fight with a black knight, so I was like WTF?! I was even more surprised that it went above 10.
Anyhow, from what I read, it happens when someone kindles a bonfire. Everyone nearby (though I've been far from a bonfire and still get it), will refill one or more.
just killed the armor boar (does this thing respawn?) and I got the key from the room down the stairs. I'm not sure what the key goes to and I don't see any way to open the gates near the area where the boar was...
1. Does anyone know the easiest order to do levels? I just finished Taurus Demon, and wondering if I should go back to New Londo?
2. Is there any form of fast travel to a Bonfire? Or do I have fight my across the map all the time?

Boar does not respawn. Don't remember what that key is for. But to open the gate...there's a path going underground, go up the ladder where there are two enemies. there's another ladder hidden on the other side which is blocked from view unless you go all the way there.

1. Not sure, I'm level 28 with 27 hours in and I just recently discovered to New Londo. I love how It's an open world so it really doesn't matter where you go. If enemies are too tough, try a different strategy, level up a bit, or find a new area or better weapons. If you're looking for the absolute easiest way to do levels, you might just want to watch some walktroughs on youtube.
2. I believe there's an item that lets you fast travel between bonfires. I remember seeing a description of it during the loading screens where it shows you different items.

theres a staircase just a little behind and to the right of where the Boar was
point taken. I just remember 1-2 kicking my ass and almost quitting, but when I went to 2-1, and then 3-1, etc things were much easier. But maybe they didn't design it that way, due to the open world aspect this time.
Speaking of the armored boar area - what's the deal with the gate behind it? I was pretty happy when I fought my way around and opened it. I died shortly after, and when I went back I was quite unhappy that the gate was down again. If it doesn't stay up, what's the point of even raising it?
Where is a bonfire near the boar... Jesus. Last one is a good ways back and I died... now marching back to my body (bit past boar) for a TON of souls... but still have no hope of where to save/level.

The bonfire is right by that area, its actually directly below the red dragon so you're gonna have to go back to the bridge and make a run for it.

The undead enemies will close it if they've respawned when you go back. That's a little harsh to let you work your way to open that "shortcut" only to take it away every time you die/rest.
Anyway, wondering where I should go next...
I'm level 20/21 and defeated the Bell Gargoyles not long ago. I did most of the lower Undead Burg earlier but haven't beaten the Capra Demon yet. I figured going down to ring the other bell would be the next step but those ghosts can be tough especially since they give no souls and you need a limited use item to even damage them. Should I just go back and give the Capra Demon another shot? I also defeated the Titanite Demon so maybe I should just head into the forest...

here are 2 bonfires in the area
1. There's a bonfire right before you enter the area with the boar but it's behind the gate behind you where the red dragon is. I put a spoiler on a page back or so on how to access it.
2. As you enter the church go all the way back on the first floor then turn right and exit the door. Follow the path straight and you'll enter a building. Below is another bonfire.
Game is good, but inferior to Demon's Souls. Just not a fan of not knowing what is going on... having 0 objective... and having to find bonfires.
Your first objective is to ring the two bells of awakening and you are even told where they are. Is that not objective enough?
Not knowing what is going on is 100% appeal for me. Your job in this game is to gather information then put it to use. You will probably die gathering that information but you won't die again if you learn from it. I love that.
Also, there was hardly any exploring in Demon's Souls. Sure you could find some items a little off the beaten path or that one little area where you rescue Yuria but its nothing compared to Dark Souls. You say you hate it cuz you have to find bonfires, I say it makes it a lot more interesting. I love that you can just go up and fight whatever you want. If you can damage it, you can eventually kill it. There were a few places like this in Demon's Souls such as killing Ostrava early to fight the Old King, but Dark Souls has this literally everywhere. Its fantastic.

You can get to the Darkroot Gardens and Basin this way, but its not the Forest. Maybe you can find this 20k item somewhere like a trade with the crow or something but I haven't found an alternative yet.
Concerning the Valley of the Drakes
So I picked the lock to get here early and made it up to the dragon "statue" with the two items near it. I thought it was too obvious and was going to just be a psych out on From's part expecting players that had gotten this far to be expecting it to jump to life and rape them. So I got right up to the items and thought meh better check to be sure and shot it with my bow point blank. Of course it jumped to life and raped me. God damn double psych out I love these motherers.

I completely agree. I love how it's an open world. I personally see bonfires as a reward for exploring and hard work (since there are some where you have to fight tooth and nail to get to).
I imagine I could take him easily if it weren't for the dogs but they make it nearly impossible to dodge or heal. I read running up the stairs will let you kill them by themselves but I tried that and the Capra Demon followed me and killed me.

You use the stairs to have him chase you then you jump down (perfect time to heal) and when he jumps down to chase you the landing will leave him open for a couple shots because he stays idle for a couple seconds after falling. Rinse & Repeat, and its also a good idea to try and isolate the dogs and get rid of them first.

Every time I tried that he would hit me as I was jumping down so I couldn't take advantage of him being immobile for those few seconds since it takes forever to get up. I just got him though. I got lucky and managed to take the dogs out right away. DIE CAPRA DEMON DIE!!!!
I'm enjoying this more than Demon's Souls for the most part, but I think the bosses so far are much easier than Demon's Souls. Boss before the bell, for instance,
the gargoyles seem to mostly take the place of the maneater from Demon's Souls, but the gargoyles are so much easier. I remember having trouble taking down the maneaters even with two phantom summoned.
