Dead Space 2 -- Discussion
I know it's too much work for so little detail but...

if the game save from the first game remembered where your blood stains were from your first time through, that would be so fucking epic. (Even if you don't.)

The one part I don't like is that there are now new things in the lockers. There shouldn't be anything in the lockers because you've already removed them in the first game. They shouldve figured out another way to give you crap.

Of course, that's nitpicky. I love this game.

Also, the flashbacks of the wall tentacle was a great touch. It gave me flashbacks.
I think, though, the items on the Ishimura can be explained by the fact that people have been working on her.
So... you must not be a mass effect fan then...?
...I'm honestly starting to think I'm the only person on this planet who didn't have some sort of once in a lifetime religious experience with Mass Effect 2. I am an avid fan of the lore and the first game. Its sequel and its new formula however did next to nothing for me.

Actually, my first time through ME2 was just okay... it really hit me the second time as I changed my class on played the game a fresh. But I can't imagine anything but a blockbuster-helluva-awesome ride for ME3 this year.

Next to that, I'm a DS2 guy through and through. I agree with you that they pretty much nailed it. But, its still pretty early in the year and there are some great potentials like LA Noire, Portal 2, ME3, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Deus Ex, XCOM, Rage... man... I thought I would only list one or two and then just got going. Awesome year.

That totally explains the new green boxes. But not the lockers.

Recall that not every locker was open. Might be that different lockers are open this time through.

Not that I'm thinking the Devs considered -that- much in planning the level.

That's the explanation I'm giving myself too. It's kinda flimsy. They should all have been opened by now.

I don't know man. The audio diaries describe how freaked out most of them were... if that was me, I would bring some ammo and put it around where I am working in case something went wrong.

Just finished this game and it was fucking awesome. I think I may have enjoyed 1 even more but 2 is right up there. So many "holy shit" moments:
freefalling down to the colony from the solar array, Isaac imagining/remembering the tentacle attacks on the Ishimura, Stross taking Ellie's eye
. So scary and great.

Now I need to finish Extraction on Wii and then go back and do a Plasma Cutter-only run through 1.

Skyrim, Gears of War 3, BioShock Infinite, etc

DS2 is to DS1 what ME2 was to ME1...Take a great concept (buckets of gore, scares, badass weapons, a unique leveling system), then streamline it, add a shiny new level of polish, improve the controls, and sell it for $60.

I'll be rooting for either this, ME3, or Gears 3 for GOTY. DS2 is everything I could want in a game.

Also, I've determined that Hardcore mode in DS2 is less difficult than in DS1, but the three save aspect makes it old-school (as in, once you lose your lives, you have to start all over) which is terrifying because you learn to fear the necros even more.

Wooohoo! Just finished.

My strategy on the final boss was just

line gun and alt line gun. Just stock up on med packs and line gun ammo.

What a great game. Can't wait for Dead Space 3...

Love it.

Few things, TK all bodies. If they don't move, they are a trap.

Also, I got lost in the story. I went through the area with a Lightspeed statue to the Church, and now have to go back through the Lightspeed area to go to Gov Sector. Why did I go over there again?

Remember how when you got to the church penthouse the people there grabbed you, and then a spaceship shot up the place? It was a trap.

Just finished the 9th chapter and I must say this game is awesome. How much more difficult is the next difficulty up from normal? I'm not really having trouble getting through it right now but there have been some challenging parts. I'm also curious what people are upgrading their first time through. I've focused all of my nodes on my RIG and Statis. I'm beginning to think that was a bad idea as my weapons may not be strong enough for the new game + or whatever they call it.

Great game so far though and can't wait to play the rest of the chapters, it's going by so fast though.

the sequence where you are on the train and hanging upside down shooting enemies was fucking awesome

I think Dead Space, though, was a lot more refined to begin with than Mass Effect was. The story of Mass Effect was great, but if you try to go back and play that after having played ME2, it's tough. To me, Dead Space 2 simply tweaked everything that worked with Dead Space. Mass Effect 2 had to really rework a lot of things.

After playing on Normal, Zealot was not very hard. A few tough moments, but nothing that couldn't be handled. Zealot basically becomes one hit kills. I upgraded the pulse rifle and then the contact beam. The contact beam's ALT fire is hugely useful. Force gun is also quite fun. I also did stasis like you and left my rig for later.

I believe they also give you the option of re-specing your node allotments. But I never did it myself and am not sure if you can move nodes from one gun to another or any specifics like that. But it was fairly cheap when the option opened up... 5000 I think. So if you want to change your mind keep your eyes open for that option.

Zealot becomes VERY easy as a second playthrough, especially when you level up your rig, stasis, and your 2 main guns. Getting the advanced suit at the end of the first playthrough is also key, as it reduces the charge time for stasis by 50%, which I find to be very valuable.

My main strategy to get through Hardcore (I made it to chapter 5 or so) has been to stasis an enemy, shoot off an arm, grab it, and kinesis it back at the necro for a TK impact. Then you've got another arm to zap the next necro with. It seems to be working because I have more ammo than I know what to do with. I've been selling it back for nodes and working on upgrading stasis and the plasma cutter.

Yeah I got the Advance Suit, I feel like I kind of got lucky since I wasn't opening every node door. However Zealot will probably have to wait for me since I'm currently playing on normal. I do however plan to take another run through this game so it'll probably have to be at the Survivalist level of difficulty. Maybe if I go through a third time I'll try Zealot depending on how much trouble Survivalist gives me.

I should finish this game today, and so far I must say this is the best game I've played in quite some time. The combat is amazing.

Good to hear that Zealot isn't too tough on a second playthrough. My plan is to go back and try if after I finish my Plasma Cutter-only run through Dead Space 1 (and possibly also a DS1 Impossible playthough unless it just kicks my ass too hard).

I tried the demo of this game and is the whole thing, "walk down corridor, kill bad guy, walk down corridor that looks exactly the same, kill bad guy, walk down corridor that looks exactly the same, etc."? I can't say that I came away impressed.

yes, that's the whole game.

Wow... only 560, eh? EA is really working hard for my money. I wonder how many virgins had to be sacrificed for that price to stick.

I don't, much. :) I was commenting on the lack of variety in the demo, which you'd think would try to sell me on the game. I mean, seriously, you walk down the same exact corridors and go through the same exact doors, over and over. I guess I was supposed to be wowed by the vomiting bad guys? Awesome. The point was *only* that the demo's lack of variety didn't exactly sell the game to me. That's it. I'd still like to try the full game at some point, but I'm hesitant to spend any significant money on it given that experience.

You must really enjoy Brutal Legend then.

The game is exactly the same throughout. But oh how awesome that is.

Except Dead Space 2 isn't even the same all of the way through. Is he expecting 25 different enemy types? There are quite a few enemy types in DS2 that require many different strategies to defeat. I was never bored in the game, not even once.

The demo is a snapshot of a small part of the game, not a snapshot of the entire game.

Oh I agree. The girls in the church are much different from the juveniles. But the game boils down to shooting things. I'm not saying that's bad. DS2 is so far my goty.

I'm not really sure what else he's expecting. That's why i threw in the Brutal Legend quip. I don't want tons of different gameplay. Which is why I was so glad the hacking wasn't ridiculous.

I agree that the crypts was a bad demo choice. But don't let that stop you... the game is really good as can be seen on pretty much any review site and on most podcasts. It isn't a waste of money. Though I bet you could CAG trade for it in the not so far future.

With Severed coming out in less than a week, Microsoft really needs to get a port of Extraction set up on XBLA. I haven't got a Wii or PS3, so I've never had the opportunity to play it; I'm sure other DS fans tied to the 360 have had similar experiences.

Shoot! I never beat extraction. Tell me, how far am I? I just ran into the group of people on the elevator a little ways into the ishimura?

is it necessary to play thru Extraction before playing Severed DLC? I'm sure it'll still be enjoyable, though I agree, I really would've liked to see a copy of Extraction in the package with my DS2 CE

God damn it. I wanted to finally finish Extraction before Severed comes out, and I was at the very end of long-ass Chapter 9 last night when the power went out. Now I have to start the whole Chapter over. I may just throw in the towel. :p

Severely doubt that this will surprise anyone, but as is often the case with DLC on the 360, the achievements for Severed are currently not working properly. So, you might want to hold off until it's fixed. Or you could just recover your GT later.

Yup, saw this on X360A. I guess I'm playing the Fable III DLC tonight instead.

Has anyone bought any of the DLC weapon/suit packs for Dead Space 2? I've been checking them out for my eventual run-through on Zealot but none of them seem very much better than what you can get in the main game. Especially since you can do Zealot on a New Game + and not have to repurchase all your weapons (right?).

ETA: Achievements are live. I guess I'm playing Severed tonight after all. :)

Does Severed give you any bonus swag in the main game? I know they're two totally different characters, but Severed should unlock a bonus suit or some weapons or something for Isaac!

Any actual reviews for this DLC yet? Length, difficulty, unlockables, entertainment value? Are the chapters stand alone (main menu accessible) or included in the normal progression of the game? I'm not dropping any points on this until I'm reasonably convinced it's worth it since 360 owners got screwed on the Extraction port.

Yah dude, it's totally worth it. Then again, anything Dead Space related is worth it in my eyes.

I just put an hour into it and I think it is a great dlc so far. And you start the DLC up by just going to 'new game' and the regular game and Severed are there to pick from.

Enjoyed the DLC, definitely worth the $7, especially the storyline aspect of finding out what happened to Gabe and Lexine after Extraction (no mention of Nathan though, or any explanation of Extraction's mysterious last scene...).

Going from Dead Space 1 to this and then back to 1 (still working my way through Impossible) kind of cemented in my mind that 1 is the better game though. Dead Space 1 was already perfectly realized-- I give the designers credit for not fixing what wasn't broken, but none of the new weapons or enemies in 2 really add anything essential, and the environments in 1 were just better (
also brought home for me by the fact that the chapter where Isaac revisits the Ishimura was by far the scariest and most compelling part of the game
). Still an awesome game though.

The DLC is ABSOLUTELY worth that $7; I finished last night.. The storyline is great, and I was actually scared shitless once or twice, which the main game failed to do to me. The new enemy type is cool, the action is once again stellar, and I there's more Peng!

Hard to complain.

And I LOVED the first game, but Ryuukishi, I think DS2 is superior in every way.

This is some bullshit~! PC users are getting some freebies.. Free suits..weapons..the one that pisses me off the most is the ability to record and deduct saved games while playing in the hardcore mode!!! Xbox gets an auto save by changing discs. PC gets a pussy handicap seems like you can save how many times you want now to beat Hardcore now.. which doesn't make hardcore at all.

I guess that means we know that anyone with 1000/1000 (or 1250/1250) on the xbox is for real, then.
