Def Jam Icon (Demo on XBL Now!)

I actually love this game, it's definitley different than the other Def Jam games, but I like it. I'm getting this first day.
WOW this game is just as good as hiphop and rap is......and that says a fucking lot for this terrible game.

NO way in hell that a metal music game would ever be this fucking terrible.
metal forever.
Shut the fuck up, you knew this game is about rap. And Rap is a lot better than metal. Metal is just people screaming into the microphone over a guitar. And at least most rappers write thier own songs

They should just come out with a lucha libre game....New Japan Pro Wrestling VS CMLL/AAA, that would be an incredible game. and have El Santo and Blue Demon as unlockables!

here we go..

Its ok, I wouldn't say its horrible. The demo is way to short. It does feel like there need to be more moves but I'm probobly not yet used to the controls. The DJ control system is hard to understand, I was able to pull off a move or two and it was cool. The fact that the backrounds break apart and blow up with the beat of the music is just plain stupid. I'll give it another go around or two to get a better feel.

I listen to mainly hip hop/rap but tell you the truth a lot of it is crap now. I wouldn't brag about the mainstream rappers writing skills.

I know most of it's crap, it's just that he comes in this thread trolling about how this game sucks because rap sucks

I am so disappointed... I loved Def Jam and NBA Street... and with ICON and HomeCourt, I absolutely hate them and won't be picking them up. This sucks to see a gaming franchise start off great then go downhill... oh wait, it's EA.

This game is almost as bad as the new NBA Street. Way to go EA. Their new tagline should be games for retards.

There's nothing to this game.. the graphics aren't even that good. The background of the city in the demo was just a bunch of flat images, SSBM style. When objects break apart, you can see that all they've done is double the geometry of the object (look at the SUV, the Gas Pumps, and The propane tank case) and split one set of the geometry. You can plainly see the original underneath.

Just looks awful, plays awful all around. I hope no CAG is dumb enough to pay anything for this.

the nba street demo is the shit, you probably just suck

anyway, i couldnt get into this demo from 3 tries...i'll probably try this a few more times to see if i can get used to the controls and maybe that will make it a bit more fun...

that's the problem with a lot of people these days...people play a game for about 3 minutes and write it off as awful because they "don't like it" in the first few minutes of play

i, for one, will give this demo a few more playthroughs before declaring anything...i played through the nba street demo about 7 or 8 times before completely mastering the controls and doing everything i wanted when i wanted (that's when it got fun - when i knew that anytime there was a messup, i knew it was my fault, not the fact that i was not familiar with the controls)..with that said, i'll be playing this over the weekend to come to a decision

I thought it was OK. Gonna give a few more tries to see if it grows on me. Street grew on me after a few tries so maybe this will too.

As fan of the series, I'll admit that it is not great but I also think that the demo doesn't do it justice. Just when you start to kick ass, the demo ends. I'll still pick it up.

ok, i got the hang of the controls.
it plays a little better, but the game still feels kind of sluggish.

hit the right stick up to grapple and from there you can use the d-pad to perform takedowns or you can hit the right stick up again to throw him.

to get your song playing, rotate the left stick clockwise until he stops and then quickly rotate the right stick clockwise. your opponent can stomp the ground to stop you.

then when you got your song playing, throw the other guy into the gas station and rotate the right stick clockwise to cause more damage.

i'll probably pick it up, but not at launch. i'll wait for the sale.

TERRIBLE demo for what could be a very good game. I don't know if they just didn't put any thought into it or what - you really have very little idea how good (or bad) it is. One mode, two characters, one level, no way to tell if you won or lost, it just stops.

The Crackdown demo was an example of how to do it right. This one just leaves me with "...that's it?"

You must be fucking high. Rap and mainstream rap is fucking terrible and so is the lyrics. Underground hip hop is ten times better. Maybe if they focused on them the game wouldn't have sucked so much ass. DJ 1 and 2 were awesome games, but yet again EA tries to improvise and go on it on its own and bleh. The game controls like a slug and its all flash and no depth. The graphics look nice, but thats to be expected with any EA game. Yeah most rappers write there own LRYICS, which explains the intelligence of them. As far as the beats most of them need to sample some other song to make it anywhere.

Pretty disappointed in the demo, especially since I chose it as my Hype Wagon pick on the CAGcast this week.

I really liked the previous Def Jam game and this seems to be a step in the wrong direction.

I think that with a little more playtime I could like this game... it will hold off my fighting game twitch until VF5 comes out. I won't buy it, but I will definately try to trade for it. A tutorial would be nice to fully explain the game mechanics and give you pointers. The demo should have been longer and actually let you finish a round, but it actually raised my interest in the game somewhat.

Anyone who buys this over VF5 (despite the few month's wait) fails at being a gamer.

shutup, you can pull out Fat Joe lyrics jsut as easily as he could Kip Winger, can we please act mature and respect everyone elses opinions?

Nah, because good rap is shit compared to good rock. MUSIC FACT.

Not to say I don't like a lot of rap, but come on. I will say "at least rappers write their own songs" while comparing it to metal is a new and hilariously inaccurate twist on it. Try looking at the credits of some of your favorite rap tunes one of these days.

For one we all know fat joe sucks, if you want good rap listen to lupe fiasco, outkast, pac, jay-z, kayne, big or snoop. And yes guys like gibbs, young joc and anyone else that rhymes over nursery rhymes sucks at life.

Second lets not talk bad about East St. Louis. I am from St. Louis and Although East St. Louis is in Illinois, there is a lot of fun to be had in East St. Louis for us neighboring St. Louisans. The east side is great since nothing closes until 5am or 6am. Also, There are a lot of crazy people there. My good times involve my friends and I laughing at people in clubs high on something other than life, and going to strip clubs enjoying the scenary. Sadly thats all East St. Louis is good for, but thats good enough in my book.

Now enough with the ranting about East St. Louis, I must say the demo sucked but I will give it another try and hopefully I can figure it out better. I feel if I can do the task of learning the controls I will like it a lot more, but with the demo giving so little information, performing that task is harder than an old man on viagra.

Doesn't matter. There are talented rappers, there are talented metal bands. They're just few and far between. A guy with maynard as his handle is going on... I like Tool, both of their songs. The fast droning one and the kinda slower one.

I'm curious what custom soundtracks will do for the game, I'd like to put on some jazz or even some jpop, to see what it does. Not surprised that it disappoints, I think this is the off-year for EA where everything is a retread. Why no new Fight Night? Because they used the same engine and team to do this.

Is there going to be an ability to adjust the gameplay with custom soundtracks? If so i definately didn't read that and that sounds like the shit.

PS east st louis is terrifying to a white person.

Please refrain from turning this into a Rap vs Rock thread...I'm gonna be pissed if I have to start cherry picking posts off this thread.

Sorry to say but the places in east st. louis I go to are like 90% white. If your afraid to go to the street where all the night clubs and strip clubs are thats pretty sad. Girls I went to college with went there by themselves. If anything the club that causes the most trouble is Pops, the have live alternative bands and people always get drunk there and fight, throw things at the bands etc., and its pretty much all white.

And back on topic anyone know how to pick T.I. on the demo?

fucking retarded direction off topic.
so to anybody who has experience with dj games. is there some deeper mechanic to the fighting? id like to know if theres something i can get out spending more time with it.
i havent paid attention to when vf5 is being released but without nowing anything other than its vf5 i will be buying it
vf4 was insanely good. if theres something to the fighting engine it seems like this may have a bit going for it, if i can figure that out and how the beats play into the fight it may warrant my money.

Seems like the downside of outsourcing a project to another studio has reared its ugly head. I loved the AKI wrestling games, and thought DJ1 and 2 were okay (didn't care for the premise, though I understand its appeal to others) - now I don't even want to download a free demo based on y'alls complaints about it. Boo.

Now, if they put Wonder Mike and Reverend Run in the game, I might have to pay attention. I'm not very interested in playing as a cat with a Chuck Taylor neck tattoo, however.

back on topic.. gave it another shot, and it still seems like a dumbed down and randomized fight night with things blowing up and rapstars. Guess someone will buy it, though. Sorry for the rap discussion.

its a dumb brawler. i think i punched TI in the face like 30 times with the same punch. wheres the HUD? why did the demo just end without a winner?

so disappointed.

I wanted to like this, but wow. I thought I'd have a general idea of how to play it, but when I checked out the controls I was in for a shocker. WAY too convoluted... they've definitely gotta streamline that.

it's somewhat deep, I think it's more of the demo's fault. There should of been a tutorial and a regular fight.
People are basing it too much on part 1 & 2. I look at this as being more light hearted. If you think of it as powerstone with the turn table as the power stones, it's a bit more enjoyable.

I still feel that if I can learn how to play this game correctly I will love it. Even on the trailers for the game they were fighting so smooth and the action was fluid. When I play its like i am fighting in water. This was gonna be a definite buy but now I will have to see the reviews first.
it's somewhat deep, I think it's more of the demo's fault. There should of been a tutorial and a regular fight.
See I don't know if it's necessarily "deep," or if it's just way too complicated. I mean just look at the attack system: you've got four face buttons for attacking, plus that grappling system, PLUS swinging the right stick around for those hook punches, PLUS whatever the hell that turntablism thing does. Then apparently there is "advanced blocking" to get into, but since both analog sticks are already used for other functions I found that too confusing to get into. It just crosses the line into being way too convoluted, unless I'm really just missing something.

And even with all those options, I feel like the entire fight consisted of that guy throwing me into the gas station over and over again. :whistle2:(
And even with all those options, I feel like the entire fight consisted of that guy throwing me into the gas station over and over again. :whistle2:(
That pretty much sums up the whole demo for me. Just the computer doing all these moves so smoothly and I'm stuck just trying to find the what button corresponds to grapple. This has to be one of the worst demo's I've ever downloaded so far. I was actually looking forward to this game also. The graphics were great but thats pretty much where all the pro's end.

The con's definitly start with the controls and fighting engine. There was nothing wrong with the AKI engine, Fight for NY was perfect it had pretty decent graphics and the fighting engine was perfect. But of course someone has to change it up for the next gen systems and go and ruin a perfectly decent game. On one hand I'm glad I downloaded to demo, now I can save my money for something else that's actually worth it.

Ugh, delete. Did anyone else have flashbacks of Pit Fighter? Good looking fighting game with terrible gameplay.

Maybe the game will turn out to be fun once you finally get the control scheme down, but this demo is awful and probably won't help sales for this game.

Man, my 360 is still a doorstop, so I can't try the demo, but I'm disappointed to hear that all my sneaking suspicions (No Aki = no interest, analog stick fighting = super double no interest) sound like they're on the money. Too bad.

And lest I derail this thread again, I'll say this, on the topic of metal GAMES vs. rap GAMES -- Kiss: Psycho Circus. There are turds on both sides of the yard.

As a big fan of the first two, I'm a little disappointed. On the good side, the graphics look outstanding. But, man, did they go all out in utilizing every single button on the 360 controller. I think I need three hands to do it all.

Left analog to move, right analog for directional attacks, d-pad for grapple moves, face buttons for quick/slow attacks, left bumper to do the DJ-thing with the analog sticks, right bumper to taunt... Did I miss anything?

I hope the retail version has a practice mode or a bunch of Glass Joe opponents to learn the control scheme because this is ridiculous!

They don't need a HUD, the damage to the fighter shows up on the actual character

Custom soundtracks will make this game, yes it will recognize the beats, so guess what, whatever music you like, the game will react to it. That makes it more appealing, personally...
They don't need a HUD, the damage to the fighter shows up on the actual character
its only works with a tighter camera. you can barely see the facial damage and im playing in 720p! this game needs to go back in the oven for a bit and come out when its done.
